Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

” As He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him.  And a great storm developed on the sea so that the waves began to swamp the boat. But He was asleep.  So they came and woke Him up saying, “Lord, save us! We are about to die!” But He said to them, “Why are you cowardly, you people of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was dead calm.  And the men were amazed and said, “What sort of person is this? Even the winds and the sea obey Him!”  (Matthew 8. 23-27)

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

We may not be engulfed in the current voracious hurricane spreading carnage along the Texas coastline but we have all faced a storm in our lives that has threatened our existence physically, emotionally or spiritually.  If you are one of the lucky few who have never had such an experience, I pray you never do.  But, for the rest of us there is a story that can speak to a reminder of who we are to be in Christ.  The story of Jesus calming the storm and sea is well-known.  It isn’t the first nor the last storm the disciples will experience as followers of Christ.  On another such occasion we see Peter reaching out to Jesus with an impetuous request.  He asked to walk on water to be at Jesus side.  Things seemed to have gone pretty well until Peter took his eye off Jesus and took in the horrifying scene that surrounded him.  Just as quickly as he stepped from the boat onto the water so he began to disappear under the stormy waves.

What do these stories have in common?  Jesus, of course!  But, what else?  It is the call to have peace in our own lives as it was for the disciples.  When Jesus was awakened by the disciples it was from a peaceful sleep.  His confidence was in God; the same God who created the presence of storms on the face of the earth.  He knew it wasn’t His time to die so there was nothing to fear.  The disciples should have taken a hint from Jesus in His peaceful sleep.  Instead, they cried out in fear “Don’t you care?”  So, Jesus called out to the wind and the water and declared “Peace, be still.”  Without question the disciples were calmed as well.  He not only was Lord of nature but of life as well.

He is the Lord of life still.  He is in the midst of our storms resting peacefully.  He desires for us to be at peace as well.  He doesn’t desire our death.  He died for our lives, too.  He speaks the word of God over our lives so that we can rest peacefully in the midst of the storm and live confidently when all else seems to be falling down around.  If we are at peace ourselves, a peace founded in Christ alone, then we will be peacemakers as well.  Our peace-filled presence when all else seems to be breaking loose in someone’s life can give them the faith and hope grounding that strengthens, encourages and settles their troubled waters.

Mighty men, live a shalom life- one that is peace-filled in our coming and our going and in the times when we need to rest, too.

advent 4

Celebrating an Advent of PEACE on earth and goodwill to all people!

HIS WORD for TODAY:

James 1.16-18

“Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the Word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all He created.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

If there were no Jesus, there would be no Christmas. Taking the Christ out of Christmas leaves only a worldly celebration. Everyone loves a party and a great time of sharing; especially when it benefits our own self. But, how sad it is for those who will miss the greatest party and celebration of sharing the universe will ever know. Yes, I am talking about the grand reunion of all believers in Heaven with their Heavenly Father. Many in this world- past, present and future, will have short-lived happy moments and glad hours. They will see seasons of plenty that may outshadow the seasons of desperation. But, they are merely seasons of life in this world. Without Christ they will miss the unending day of the Lord where the only season will be of peace that love, joy and hope are fulfilled by faith in Christ who put His faith in God His Father and ours.

Too many see Christmas only as a time to exchange gifts of temporary meaning and satisfaction; usually in the hope of getting a gift as well that will fill a day. But, God has given us all a gift that fills an eternity with a life of goodness- our eternity. In the birth of the Messiah as Jesus, son of Mary and Joseph, God has given us the new birth of opportunity to live with Him forever. It is a gift that cannot be purchased in a store on Black Friday or online on Black Monday. It is a gift that was purchased for us on a cross nearly two thousand years ago through the sacrificial offering of the life and love of Jesus as the Christ for each of us. It is to Him and our Heavenly Father that we should be giving thanks and sharing gifts. It is because of Him that we have the gift of true peace which does not come from the works of man but from the heart of God.

Mighty men, we must embrace the truth of this season and represent it well in and through our lives. There is nothing for us to earn but everything for us to give. We have been reborn into the richness of faith, hope and love so that with all our heart, mind, body, soul and strength we can fulfill our purpose on earth as it is already completed in Heaven. Our destiny is secured. The only thing left for us is to choose which destiny we desire- life with the Father of Truth of life or with the Father of Lies. Choosing the Father of Truth means that we will be gathered up first on the day when Christ returns and brought before God as a thank offering. We will be spared the season of unrest and dying which leads to eternal death and misery. But, choosing the Father of Lies means we will be gathered with the tares and cast into the judgment fire to be consumed and scattered across what is left of the old earth. At that point, we will not even be good for replenishing the ground from which we came because there will be no need seed sown, no harvest cultivated and no hope given.

What should we give to those who have everything? I think it is the opportunity to affirm their faith that Jesus is the Christ and accept Him again as Lord and Savior or to those who have not yet made this profession of faith the opportunity to do so and know the peace that surpasses all understanding.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For blessing and wisdom on those who will lead God’s people in worship, praise and service this weekend; the second week of Advent as we celebrate peace on earth and goodwill to all people

* For wisdom among the world’s leaders as wars and rumors of wars rise up; earthquakes, floods, great winds and fire abound; and civil unrest reaches out across all secular and non-secular lines and to lead God’s people into the truth concerning judgment, the end of days and Jesus’ return for we are moving closer to it each day.
* For those who are seeking to put an end to human trafficking that their success would be overwhelming so that the healing may be equally so
* For Louisville, Kentuckiana, Goodwill, NECC and the people of Hungary
* For the needs of my family near and far and our friends healing, reconciliation and wisdom; for a new job placement that aligns with God’s purpose intended for me not to be in struggle; for needs of my family now that far exceed our ability to handle on our own and comfort to our parents who are committed to their new realities; wisdom to know truth and relate it adequately; for guidance in a difficult financial situation; physical and mental healing of my stepmother and my dad; relief from pain for my wife and myself (as I wait for the neurologist’s decision) and for the strengthening of our relationship with one another and God

HIS WORD for TODAY:

John 10.10

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

The enemy is a consumer of time, talent and life. He wants nothing more than to take away the grandeur of what God has made. He discolors life with the shades of darkness, doubt and despair. He does not leave a glass half-full or half-empty. He leaves it tipped over and broken. The carnage of his own brokenness litters the world. We trip over it often.

But, the friend of God who is our friend is a giver of life, hope, peace and abundance. He wants nothing less than to give us His best. He has done this with His very own life. He leads us through the shadows into the places of pure light where every color is brilliant. He helps us through the detours of sin on straight paths of righteousness where life flourishes and there is rest. He fills our cups to overflowing with the Word of encouragement called love. He is the epitome of God’s love and it is shared with us in mercy and grace. As we walk with Him our steps become more stable and true and our journey takes on its true meaning and purpose.

Mighty men of God, remember who is your best friend. He has already defeated the enemy’s hold on your life. You are free to be in the Kingdom of God. The enemy will continue to attack and try to dissuade you from this truth. The challenges will seem overwhelming at times. Little things pile up until they seem like mountains. But, by faith in Christ we can say to the mountain “come down.” It has already been conquered. We must live in the reality of our relationship with the true friend of God and man. He is for us and never against us.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For those leading God’s people in worship, praise and service this weekend
* For the safety of those involved in the Rio Olympics- physically, mentally, morally and spiritually
* For the rise of the body of Christ in the world through prayer to be the voice that is heard sounding out against terrorism with faith, hope and love
* For those whose burden in life creates such desperation that taking the life of another as a means of escape and problem-solving seems reasonable and for their victims that they may have peace; as seen in the sex-trafficking slavery business of young girls
* For the end of the ISIS regime and replacing it with the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ into all the nations of the earth
* For the homeless, especially now as summer heat and drought bring searing temperatures
* For family and friends battling cancer and dementia at all stages of life and those seeking to be their caregivers and those who are their families
* For those who are seeking to put an end to human trafficking that their success would be overwhelming so that the healing may be equally so
* For Louisville, Kentuckiana, Goodwill, NECC and the people of Barbados
* For the needs of my family near and far and our friends healing, reconciliation and wisdom; for a new job placement that aligns with God’s purpose intended for me; for needs of my family now that far exceed our ability to handle on our own and comfort to our parents who are committed to their new realities; wisdom to know truth and relate it adequately; for guidance in a difficult financial situation

PRAYER CELEBRATIONS (where we see Him at work in the world):

* God is blessing me with the opportunity to restore dignity to the past and care from the future
* God continues to provide prosperity at 5226 as I trust Him in so doing and give thanks praying for sufficient and proficient employees and the wisdom to meld a team spirit by staying humble before God and co-workers

* God is good all the time and all the time God is good- even when we cannot see it!

ABIDING IN PRAYER: Father, hear us as we call out our faith in You. We reach for the fullness of life that You have to offer. Give us the portion we need today as we go into the world by, with and for Your Son and our Savior Jesus, in whose name we pray, live and serve. AMEN.

HIS WORD for TODAY:

1 John 5.13-15

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask— we know that we have what we asked of Him.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

My wife and I were reminded yesterday that God is indeed listening to our petitions. It is easy to forget that God is listening when we are not hearing the answers to our prayers. What we long for may be according to His will for our lives; it also may not be. We must align ourselves with His Word best revealed in Jesus Christ who is the Word of Life. But, as I have been reminded before, sometimes God’s answer to our prayers is “No” or “Not yet.” His answer is perfect even if it escapes our understanding. And then there are those times as we experienced yesterday that simply affirms God is listening. Just because we may not get the answer or hear the answer does not mean that God is not listening. It was four hundred years in captivity before the answer of deliverance came to the Hebrews in Egyptian captivity. But, when His answer came it was clear, distinctive and history changing. The same will be true for us; in great and small ways.

So, as we sat at dinner unwinding from a challenging day, the distant rumble spoke to the chance of rain as was predicted. A look at the radar showed storms in the distance but moving away from us. Yet, the thunder grew louder and text alerts confirmed lightning strikes drawing closer. A simple petition was offered as to a time of thunder, lightning, wind and drenching rain. Added to that was one of an enduring time of such weather. We did not want harmful weather but strong activity because it has spoken to us of God’s awesome power and presence. Rain can be comforting. And then it happened. Large drops of rain falling straight down from heaven. There was no wind yet. It was cold and refreshing rain falling. I knew it was from high up in the sky. We sat back down at the dinner table and watched as the rain intensified and lightning became more prominent. A look at the Weather Channel app showed that the storm was still to the north and west of us. Yet, we were definitely getting rain. Then the wind picked up. Thunder rolled overhead as lightning filled the sky in close proximity. Five minutes turned to ten and then to thirty. Another look at the radar showed the storm moving away had actually now moved toward us. Far from the edge of the storm became the center of the storm and thirty minutes turned to an hour and then ninety minutes.

Enduring rainstorm. Prayerful peace. Actual affirmation. And as we gave thanks when the storm began to diminish and blue skies appeared in the distance there was a rolling thunder that sounded more like laughter as if God Himself was enjoying the moment with us. Now we may not have figured out what answers God has been speaking to us but we know that He is listening. Are we? We will not always have such signs of confirmation. We must continue to believe that God is listening and working on our behalf and through us for the good of others. But, for nearly two hours we knew that God does not forget nor forsake His children, those who are called by His name as mighty men and women of God.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

INDEPENDENCE DAY, July 4, 2016

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Colossians 1.9b-10

“We have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

If we want to know peace, then we must sow peace. This means we must first be at peace with ourselves and with God. Thanks be for Jesus Christ who is the Prince of Peace and has, by His life and death and resurrection obedience, declared that peace can be had. We must believe in God’s desire for there to be peace. We must humble ourselves in the knowledge that without a right relationship with God there can never be peace. We must embrace peace in our own lives including the seeking of forgiveness when we fall back into chaos.

When God created the heavens and the earth, He did so by declaring peace. This was done by sending His Holy Spirit to hover over the face of the darkness and chaos and bringing to light the glory of God in the midst of it. When Jesus taught “the Kingdom of God is in the midst of you” He was speaking of restoring peace into our lives of chaos. Sin fractures and separates our many parts- physical, psychological, mental, emotion, social and spiritual. How can we be at peace when we are falling into pieces? God, however, by His grace expressed in the presence of the Holy Spirit, begins to pull the pieces of our lives back together again. He connects them with the mortar of love. He establishes them on the foundation of truth which is His Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ. He causes His Holy Spirit to cover over us and bring to light the glory of God in our midst. And when we understand our relationship with God is reconciled, restored and reconstructed then we shall know peace.

Further, just as we are becoming one with the Father we are becoming one with the Son. Joined together and knitted into the full fabric of the body of Christ, the Church, we then thrive on the Holy Spirit’s presence and our peace grows. The peace that is within is then sown into the world in which we live and nurtured by the same Spirit grows into other pieces of this glory picture and brought in. When we feel that we are not at peace it may be that inner awareness that something, more like someone, is missing. Just as the good shepherd went to find the one and, whether dead or alive, finding it brings it back to know peace.

I believe this nation needs to humble itself before God. The Good Shepherd has come. Through the forgiveness of our sins He has given us peace. But, now it is time to claim that peace by truly becoming one with the Father and fulfilling the calling in each of us to do His Will on earth as it is being done in Heaven. It cannot happen, mighty men, until we are all praying for peace. Not peace as the world gives peace but authentic peace as Jesus declared and the Holy Spirit proclaims.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For the healing of this nation which has taken its liberties, gifts, talents and resources and made them a license for immorality, poor judgment and threat against authentic peace for all people
* For Turkey, Baghdad and Bangladesh following terrorists attacks with the loss of life, peace and security for victims, families, community and visitors

PRAYER CELEBRATIONS (where we see Him at work in the world):

* God is preparing me for our next ministry with current conditions

ABIDING IN PRAYER: Father, may the peace which has already been given to the world in the name of Jesus our Christ be received and put into action as we love one another before God and all the world. Let the awakening come, dear Lord, in this nation so that it may be a leader of righteousness and truth on the earth and turn all eyes to Jesus and declare with one voice He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings. This is our true cry of liberty in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

HIS WORD for TODAY:

John 14.27

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

The world gives conditionally. Jesus gives unconditionally. This does not mean that we do not have any responsibilities when we receive His peace. We definitely continue to abide in His peace and share it with others. What the world needs is the peace of Christ which surpasses all understanding. As His disciples we are not only to be at peace with ourselves, one another and with God through Christ but we are to make disciples in and off all nations so that they can be at peace, too. While we may be a one and done as it comes to our salvation, we are still compelled and commissioned to go into all the world and serve so that others can be in the sphere of His peace, too.

But, that requires us to trust that even when we do not feel at peace His peace will prevail.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

Advent 3

HIS WORD for TODAY: The Third Week of Advent 2015- JOY!

Job 33.23-28

“Yet if there is an angel at their side, a messenger, one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright, and he is gracious to that person and says to God, ‘Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them— let their flesh be renewed like a child’s; let them be restored as in the days of their youth’— then that person can pray to God and find favor with Him, they will see God’s face and shout for joy; He will restore them to full well-being. And they will go to others and say, ‘I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved. God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

To borrow the words from another age “Mighty Elihu has struck out.” There is no joy in Mudville, or in the context of Job’s life- Cana near Gaza. To silence the boasting of Satan, the accuser of God and man, God leaves the door open for hardship and tragedy to befall Job. The result Satan hopes for is to turn Job from his faithful commitment to God and actually get Job to blame God for all his troubles. The result God intends is to prove that the depth of faith man can have in God will overcome any and all adversities proven by the giving of glory to God despite worldly conditions. God does level the playing field by telling Satan “You can do anything you like to Job except to tamper with his soul.” Of course, this is the “ace in the hole” for God. Job is a man of righteousness and faith. The evidence of that would be the very condition of his soul for this is where righteousness and faith is borne. It is not dependent on worldly conditions. The tragedy is that too many lose sight of this truth and thus surrender their grasp on joy- a gift of God as a fruit of the spirit.

So, mighty men, while these verses of Elihu’s hopeful boasting are meant to bring soothing peace to Job by putting himself in the place of prominence before Job, man, himself and God, we can see a prophetic declaration that is at the heart of the joy God intends for all men.

1) Elihu is a messenger from God just not THEE messenger. Sometimes we are the sharers of truth doing what is ultimately beneficial for others but it was not intended as our chosen purpose. Elihu wanted to promote himself as Job’s priest, prophet and savior. He believed he was bestowed with the insight of God and the power to bring joy to Job’s life. In truth, the message was correct. However, the angel, one in a thousand or a thousand thousand or a million million, is not Elihu but Jesus Christ. Yes, even the angels who appeared to the shepherds tending their flocks during the early morning of Jesus’ birth are not the saving angels. They bring good news of a great joy which is our salvation.

2) There is no joy without confession and profession. If we are not honest about our failure to do what is right then our profession to walk with God falls on deaf ears. Jesus is our advocate before God. Ultimately, the power of life and death, bane and blessing, emanates from God Himself. Yes, the keys of the kingdom to bind and to loose are given to Christ who in turn gives them to us but the final “yes and no” is God’s. Accepting this truth and graciously becoming obedient to it opens the door for joy to come into our lives. It is that great “AHHA!” moment we crave when the truth we think we know becomes the truth that we know. It is apparent and then it is evident. Recognizing Jesus as the Christ, the mighty angel of mercy and grace of God, is the key to that door of opportunity.

3) Joy comes in receiving what we do not deserve and avoiding what we do deserve. All have sinned, fallen short of the glory of God and thus deserve to receive eternal death as has Satan already for his rebellion against God. Yet, we can do what seems impossible for Satan who remains at best an accuser of the faithful. What it is we can do? We can confess Jesus Christ as Lord. We can accept Him as our personal Savior. We can handle the truth of being restored as sons and daughters of the Most High God who dwelling place with be in the midst of us and us in Him. It comes in believing, acting out in good works with compassion to others and trusting in Him at all times and in all things despite appearances. When we are honest that we are far short of God but we desire to do better at falling less short then we are brought near to God. That nearness is not the death of us but the gladness of living for God who lives for us.

4) Ultimate joy comes in sharing this good news that has happened to us with others so that it can happen to them.

a. Why do you think Jesus did not go straight to Heaven when He died on the cross and was laid in the tomb? Why wouldn’t He go into the pit of death and demonstrate to those aching souls there “Where, o death, is your victory; where, o death is your sting. Death has been swallowed up in victory.” That is what separated Elihu from Job and from Christ. He had not experienced the tragedy of death. He was a victim of self-righteousness. His situation was better than Job’s in the moment only because he was not on Satan’s radar. Satan doesn’t need to attack the self-indulgent as they are already blinded to the truth. He wants to blur the vision of the hopeful, the peaceful and the faithful so they, in their confusion and anxiety, give up life to accept death.

b. Jesus not only descended into the pit of death but He returned to Jerusalem to show how the Word of Promise which He gave to His disciples and other believers was actually the truth and not just talk. Jesus walked the talk and talked the walk. He was joy-filled, joy-full and rejoicing. Nothing could stop Him from sharing this joy with those He loved. That is His feeling about us as well. He continues to come into the world, our world, to share the good news of a great joy- Jesus Christ is Lord.

So, in this season of advent joy, let us give thanks that we have been visited by the ultimate messenger of God who will show us the truth and stand with us before God and declare “Bless these whom You have given me as You have blessed Me in being given for them.”

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

HIS WORD for TODAY: The Second Week of Advent 2015- PEACE!

Malachi 2.4-6

“And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the Lord Almighty. “My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered Me and stood in awe of My Name. True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

If we looked behind us and could see our footprint in our walk with Jesus it would tell us a great deal about our state of peace. Malachi shared the word of God which declared Levi “walked with Him in peace and uprightness.” I never had the experience myself but I can imagine a child walking with his father through snow.

1) If the snow was light it might prevent little problem and you would see footprints side by side. Perhaps they would even wander a bit to the side, out in front and lagging behind exploring something they have seen or heard. Peaceful living at this level is playful happiness. All is well because nothing is wrong. This peace can easily fade.

2) As the snow is deeper and more of a challenge you might see the father’s footsteps shorten to enable the child to follow in his footsteps. You might see where the footstep is broken as the child stretches up and out to reach the next step. There is more hesitancy here but peace remains as long as the father is encouraging and present. This peace, too, will fade as the challenge increases.

3) Then there is perfect peace. You can recognize this time in life because the steps are deeper and singular. You only see the father’s footprints. Their combined weight allows a shifting down in the snow compacting it to a hard crunch. As the child grows older and is able to make these deeper steps on his or her own the result is the same. They, too, will be carrying someone less able just as the father carried them. Sometimes, the father still carries them but only when they ask and sometimes when they are unable to ask. This is the peace that endures because it is a walk of submission and willingness to let the father and child be as one.

Levi knew this kind of peace. Jesus modeled it as well. So, too, should we as mighty men of God for ourselves and for the generations that are following after us. Where are we in our “peace walk”?

Are we leaving a legacy of peace in our wake? Malachi shares the Word of the Lord to the people of Israel, especially the priesthood, that God’s desire is for the covenant of life and peace endure. God is sending the warning through Malachi to inspire and create a determination among them to maintain their rightful place before the nation of Israel. As the words for service and worship can be interchangeable it stands to reason that the role of priesthood is far more than being janitors of the temple and those who worship God all day long. You know, like preachers only preach on Sundays, teachers only teach smart kids and being a mom really isn’t a full-time job. But, those extremes are practiced by many in those positions. And there those who practice just the opposite on the other side of the spectrum. Striking the balance to be earthly good and heavenly minded is the goal and opportunity of every mighty man.

But, it isn’t just about us. We may have found our balance (I will not think of asking for a count of raised hands to confirm or deny this claim.) But, if we have are we mentoring and teaching others how to find this balance as well. Eternal life is not a “one and done” event. Eternal life is an enduring state of being. Is the life we are living durable and enduring? Is it connected to the past, present and future of human life centered in godly living? What if Christianity were to die with you? Wonder if the voice of the Church went silent because it finally came to a generation of mighty men who took the truth to the grave? This was a real possibility in the days of Malachi. No, now about the gospel and the Church as it was not yet born into the world. But, the covenant of life and peace as given by God had been born into the world beginning anew with the faith of Abraham, continuing on in the uniting kingship of David and now to the remnant of believers in Israel on whom the future depended.

What is unique in each of these eras and others scattered along the time line of Israel? It is the priesthood from Melchizadek forward to Jesus and through Him to the priesthood of all believers. It is a legacy of serving the Lord in spirit and in truth so there will be life and peace from generation to generation. Are we peace-givers as well as peacemakers? Jesus declared “My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give you this peace.” As we focus our thoughts on this Advent season it would seem that we are best suited to be sure that peace is given to all we meet in our greeting and in our departing so that peace will endure and life with thrive.

Lest we think Levi was perfect, perish the thought. But, he maintained himself before God with truth, honesty and reverence. Levi was a priest and his people were called to be priests. It was his purpose to celebrate in worship before God and offer the sacrifices commanded to consecrate the nation of Israel and restore them to a place of hope. It certainly does not mean that Levi was without sin for all have sinned, save Christ, and fallen short of the glory of God. But, Levi understood what it took to walk with God in peace and righteousness. His example led others to adopt his chosen path of understanding so they could enjoy peace as well.

1) No peace without confession and forgiveness. When we do wrong, we need to admit to it and seek forgiveness. This is true in our relationship with man and God. It might even seem easier to do so with God whom we cannot see than with those we interact with on a daily basis. But, the two should become as one. The prodigal son saw this truth and finally confessed “Father, I have sinned against you and God.” What was the result? Peace, restoration and a return to the life of righteousness.

2) No peace without sacrifice. Confession and forgiveness are impossible if there is no humility. We must sacrifice our selfish pride and humble ourselves before man and God. The prophet Micah declares “What does the Lord require of you but to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly before Him.” This is impossible until we put our pride to death and let righteousness rule in our heart, mind and soul by the Holy Spirit. It may seem easier to sacrifice another than to sacrifice ourselves. But remember the word of our Lord “No greater love is there than this that a man lay down his life for another.”

3) No peace without truth. Jesus declared “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one get come into the Father’s presence without coming to me first.” He would tell His disciples “If you have seen Me then you have seen the Father.” The truth is the Jesus is the way to having peace in our lives and in our world. It requires honesty, humility, sacrifice and then walking the talk and talking the walk. The truth must be alive in us evidenced by our desire to honor the name of the Lord before everyone.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”
