Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

1 John 1.7

“But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Just as God is love so God, too, is in the light. Not only is God in the light and He is the light and the light is in Him. So, John makes his declaration to the fellowship of believers that they must also endeavor to be and remain in the light. Why? Because it is the light of God which radiates healing to our body, mind and spirit. Yes, by the grace of God which raised Jesus from the dead and covers us with righteousness we are radiated to be purified of the disease which sin infects our lives. That disease manifests itself in discord, destruction, demonization and demoralization. Ultimately, it manifests itself in death- the death that separates us totally from the saving grace of God.

As mighty men of God, we would want the light of God which is experienced best by being in right relationship with Jesus as our Christ. If we are in the light of God’s mercy and grace then we become vehicles of healing as well reaching out to touch the world around us. How can we know the light is in us? I believe it comes when the Word of God is known by us in a recognized revelation. By recognized revelation I mean when we actually find the truth of the Word coming alive- our mind receives clarity, our body receives power, our heart receives depth and our spirit receives a greater nearness to God. The more we are in the light the more the light is in us and the more we are like Jesus. Isn’t that what we desire, mighty men of God? Don’t we really want to be like Jesus? He is life perfected having been delivered from the sins of all the world through God’s grace and love. We are being perfected as well as the light of God shines around us, in us and through us. The first step in that journey is the sacrificial offering Jesus made on the cross for us. Accepting His sacrifice for us proves God is waiting on no one to pursue Him. He is pursuing us.

So then, mighty men, we are to pursue others who are family, friends, even our antagonists with the light of God’s love as we have been pursued. That is the second step in our journey. With two steps we are engaged in the walk of faith. Let’s walk together and let the light of God so shine in the world.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Isaiah 49.6

“God says: ‘It is too small a thing for you to be My servant
to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that My salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

As mighty men of God we dare not to forget our calling is beyond the spheres of influence given to us as family, friends and colleagues. We must be prepared to declare God’s salvation and our commitment to serve Him at any time, in any place and to any person. We are to have the comfort level of Jesus in us. And we have this comfort level as we remember the outpouring of the Holy Spirit promised to us when we enter into righteous relationship with Him our our profession of faith and baptism. Just as it was not enough for Israel to be Israel to all of its people (and that seemed and seems to be a fairly difficult accomplishment) they were to be Israel to all the world. Perhaps the problem arose when Israel wanted all the world to be Israel. God called Israel to be Israel. He desired to use Israel to call all the world to be in relationship with Him on His terms.

As Israel would have demonstrated its faithfulness to be a righteous and holy people there would have been the invitation sought by others on how to be one of God’s people as well. But, too often what Israel seemed to have demonstrated was how not to be in right relationship with God. When God called Isaiah into the prophetic ministry he responded “I am a man of unclean lips who dwells in the midst of a people with unclean lips.” The words of their mouths did not speak well of God. They spoke against God. They spoke against each other. They spoke against those who were not of Israel. They did not keep their promises. They practiced partisanship and bitterness. They divided their own people into haves and have nots. Truly the words of Jesus concerning a house divided carried the legacy of Israel’s behavior.

Mighty men, we cannot be divided against one another and especially not against God. The words of our mouths, the meditations of our hearts and the works of our hands must be in sublime and divine harmony. We are to be the examples of God’s love in action. We are to build up the body of Christ and not tear it down. Nor are we to create it in our image instead of being created in the image of God. Yes, Jesus was sent into the world to be the Christ of the world. If there will only be a few who will follow it will not be because Jesus confined His ministry to a few. It will be because only a few have dared to believe the truth of who He is and who we are to be. Thankfully there are more than a few. But, whatever number of followers exists today should never be enough. We are called to go into the world as ambassadors of the Messianic community seeking to teach the truth and extend a welcome invitation to dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

Thanks be to God!

And that is the truth that all men should seek and accept.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY:

James 5.19-20

“My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Jesus is the promise of eternal life fulfilled. His shed blood on the cross of Calvary covers over our multitude of sins- especially those we have not yet committed. We celebrate that truth when we come to Him and confess ourselves just as we are. We confess not as a means of excusing our thoughts and behaviors but of recognizing we are still not perfect. As mighty men of God we ought to be walking on the paths of being better so we can be the best we have ever been. There are times when we rise to some height of success that the next step seems to be a tragic downfall. That can happen because we use the same amount of energy going down that we used to going up. And why are we going down? Sometimes we do not even realize it as we upon the peak before we know it. And there will be other peaks we will need to pursue. We do not see them until we are at the top of one of them. Our lives are filled with peaks and valleys. But, each one leads us closer to the final one as we climb up the everlasting Mount Zion- the new Heaven and new Earth.

Guard your steps. Confess your shortcomings to those who are strong. Gather your bearings by the indwelling of God’s Word informed to us by the Holy Spirit. Seek His wisdom and His direction as you go through each day. Ask Him first what you should do and then be obedient to what is given. And if you do not hear an immediate answer be patient and remember what is most important- love one another as God loves you.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY:

James 5.13-16

“Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day. It is a day that calls the consciousness of a nation into accountability on the basis of defining a people by their heart and not their color. Regardless of our differences, we are all the same to God. He loves us without regard. He loves us without question. He loves us in the name of Jesus Christ, His Son and the Savior of the World. He asks only that we do the same. The absolute first thing we should see when we look at ourselves and one another is that we are a child of God. He created us in diversities of all kinds. Jesus called twelve men to become students of faith and love who were as different from one another and yet the same. What was the same about them was a desire to see the world according to God and that Jesus Christ was their Lord and Savior. The only difference that should exist between any of us is whether we belief that God is God, Jehovah Yahweh. And in the long run that belief is enriched when we admit that only by being associated in faith, hope and love with Jesus Christ as the only true means of gaining eternal life can we have life and have it more abundantly.

Mighty men, why do we spend so much time focusing on our differences? Doesn’t it seem reasonable to begin at the point of focusing on what is the same? James called the Church into accountability on the basis of the conditions of life- hurt, pain, sickness, and sinfulness. Jesus, his brother, spoke of those who will hungry, thirsty, alone, and imprisoned as being the true benefactors of a believer’s commitment in service and worship. If today does anything for our spiritual lives it should be that we can color ourselves all as sinners needing the grace of a loving Father to make us the color of righteousness. God colors us righteous by the anointing of our lives with the blood of Jesus. If then the prayers of a righteous man are powerful and effective it is only because our righteousness is that of Christ who died for us and lives in us according to the Holy Spirit of God. If you feel any difference between you and someone else, then pray that God will reveal the sameness in you and between you- Jesus died for our sins that we might love one another without regard to race, religion, gender, position and ethnicity.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”

AMEN.

Celebrating an Advent of PEACE on earth and goodwill to all people!

HIS WORD for TODAY:

James 1.22-25

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it — not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it — they will be blessed in what they do.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Our greatest blessings come in put our faith into action. If we know no other blessing than Jesus who is our Lord gave His life so that we can have eternal life is known then we are truly blessed. But, the extension of that blessing promised in John 3.16 is not merely the knowledge of God’s love but that God’s love reaches out to those who are reaching out to Him. In a nest of baby birds we see an illustration of this “extension of the truth.” The baby birds remain in their nest. They are generally quiet. Their future depends on their parents. When one of them returns to the next with food for their young, the babies begin to cry out. They reach their beaks out to be filled with food. The one that does not either does not get food or gets only what remains. There has to be an action, a calling out. Our faith and our blessing are not passive. Their has to be a response of believing to facilitate the receiving. God’s giving is not dependent on our asking. He desires to give and is ready to give. But, how can we receive if we do not ask.

And so it is with the Word of God. We cannot be passive in the presence of God’s Word. We must be active. We must be interactive. We must reach out and connect with the Word, which is Christ, and then let the Word reach through us to others. The food the little birds receive is to help them live so that they may do what they were created to do. God did not create us to merely exist. There is purpose in our lives and His Word reveals that purpose. It begins with being loved and continues through loving others and loving God. Put His love in us into action. If we do not, James intimates, then we will forget what love is all about- the giving and receiving of true living.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For peace to be known in all of our relationships as God’s people to those who are in the world- “Greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world.”
* For God’s Word of deliverance to ring as clear as a bell so that sin-hardened hearts, minds and ears can hear and respond with gladness for the joy of their salvation
* For family and friends battling cancer and dementia at all stages of life and those seeking to be their caregivers and those who are their families
* For wisdom among the world’s leaders as wars and rumors of wars rise up; earthquakes, floods, great winds and fire abound; and civil unrest reaches out across all secular and non-secular lines and to lead God’s people into the truth concerning judgment, the end of days and Jesus’ return for we are moving closer to it each day.

November 18, 2016

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Daniel 2:45

“This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. ‘The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Jesus is the rock whose being and existence cannot be understood apart from God. His existence in this world is result of God’s love for humanity. Jesus was made Christ for us and we are made for Him. There is no power, no force, no enemy, nor anything that can contend with Him. He is the most powerful force in all the world and throughout all the heavens. He is because He is the epitome of God’s love for all things. And it is love, true love, that declares and ensures the victory of life over death, good over evil and righteousness over ungodliness. While many may try to take their stand against Him and His Church of which He is the Head and they are the body their attempts will be in vain. He alone in all of the glory given to Him by God will remain. And for the mighty men of God- they shall dwell with Him forever in the everlasting House of our God and Father.

Be assured, mighty men, each and every one of us, that there is only one truth and Jesus is that truth. To Him be the glory and honor all the days of our lives. Put your trust in Him and realize He will not fail to deliver us from evil and prosper us into the fullness of life. It is not merely a dream or just a vision; it is a hope-filled reality and faith and love. So in the days which are at hand and yet to come we must trust in the Rock of our Salvation and let Him be the foundation upon which we stand. It is the same foundation upon which He said He would build His Church. But, we must declare our faith in words and with works to see it all come to be in our lives and through us to others.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

November 13, 2016

HIS WORD for TODAY:

1 Peter 2.15-16

“For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s servants.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Regardless of how others in this country, and around the world, respond negatively to the result of last week’s election, the Church must respond with respect and restraint. The guarantee of our freedom in this nation is built upon the design of freedom as declared in God’s Word and by His Will. As mighty men of God we know that freedom is the right to choose to do as one pleases. That also means to choose not to do something because it is not for the good of others. As Peter declares the use of freedom as a cover-up for evil by some, he is directing Christ followers to not fall into the trap of pleasing one’s self. Just because we can doesn’t mean that we should.

Freedom is truly an accountability tool because, for Christ followers and mighty men of God, it is without question connected to the principle of agape- God love. God gave to us the gift of free will. But, Jesus demonstrated and taught us in our prayer life to prioritize our self will by making it subordinate to God’s will. The hope is that as we practice discernment, humility and true love we will find our wills bound together as one. I dare say that we are seeing the fruit of this lack of submission. Entitlement mentality has now planted the seed of rebellion and extreme selfishness. The demonstrations against the election of a president with whom those demonstrators disagree are bound in a fear that their unbridled freedom to sin has been compromised. I am not saying I agree with everything the president-elect says or stands for. I do agree with God’s word that we are to show respect and restraint. The greatest change with the most long-lasting effect comes by acting in love and turning to God in our times of trouble and disagreement. It also means turning to God in our times of peace and agreement. All our decisions should be based upon the Word of God and settled in the great command to love God and love one another as God loves us.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Jeremiah 29.12-14a

“‘Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart. I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and will bring you back from captivity.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

How long will it take for us to seek God with our whole heart? I am not even sure if I know what it means to seek God with my whole heart. Thankfully, in Jesus Christ and because of the grace which I know is now extended to me I know that I do not have to seek God perfectly in order to find Him. I believe that seeking Him with my whole heart would mean that there is never a moment or a situation which I do not turn over to God first before I step into action. But, I am not there yet. In the days of Jeremiah as God spoke through him to those who were in exile in the domain of Babylon it was going to take seventy years before they got it right. I doubt that they were 100% then either. I guess that means God’s grace was extended then, too. That is good news. It is good news because God’s grace is sufficient to meet our needs and it is not dependent on our perfection. But, as new creatures in Christ we are closer to perfection than we have ever been. And don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that we are closer to being perfect. Rather, I am declaring that because of what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross we are closer to God than we have ever been.

Was there a distance between God and us? For the exiles it was easy to believe that God only truly dwelt in the land of Israel over 800 miles away. But, Ezekiel had a vision of God’s appearing to the exiles in Babylon while Jeremiah was experiencing God in Jerusalem. He was there and there. And as we consider those exiles in Babylon we have to remember where the Father of Faith, Abraham, had come from. Yes, he was raised in Babylon and God appeared to him there as he sought the purpose of his life in prayer and faith and heard God. God was listening. God was still listening. God is here. The question is “where are we?” Sin had put great distance between us and God. But, His love always kept the distance between God and us just a hair’s breadth away. Yes, seeking God with our whole heart may actually be the call to how we love God. Do we love God as if He is far away and unreachable? Do we love God who is close and ready to be in life communion with us.

As mighty men of God, we must stay close to God. It comes by loving God first just as Jesus declared to His disciples and to the temple leadership. It comes by loving God in trusting Him with our whole heart and not dwelling on our own understanding. If it was left to our understanding then sin would creep in just as it did in Eden and say there is a great distance. But, if we trust in God He is right here with us ready to draw us nearer and nearer to His perfect love as our Heavenly Father!

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Philippians 2.3,4

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

What value do others have in your eyes? We know the price of one human life. It has been committed to the pages of history so that it will never be forgotten. It has been written in the heart, mind, soul and spirit of every person so that we are reminded of it. Yes, people can choose to ignore the truth, knowing the truth, letting the truth live in them and the still small voice of God’s Spirit speaking inside. But, it doesn’t change the truth just because we refuse it. The truth of God is made the standard by which all men, women and children shall be held accountable. It is the standard of love.

In the Old Testament, the standard of love was represented by the staff of Moses around which a snake was curled. It drove away the pestilence of snakes that were afflicting the slaves on their journey to freedom. They were already free. They had been released from their captivity in Egypt to return to the land of the free and the home of the brave. It was called the Promised Land. But, the freed slaves had a difficult time embracing their freedom. If they had clung as tightly to the truth as the fashioned serpent was wound around the staff lifted high over the people then they may not have sojourned in the wilderness quite so long.

In the New Testament, the standard of love was represented by the cross of Christ upon which the body of Jesus had been hung. It, too, drove away a pestilence of snakes- Satan and his dark followers. When that cross fell into the hole in the ground with a heavy thud it was the fulfillment of the promise of God made to Adam and Eve that one day a descendant of their offspring would crush the head of the serpent that would bite at their heel. I assume the serpent was trying to injure the Achilles tendon, as we know it today, to disable a person in their walk through life. But, even though we are free today from the slavery of sin, we have a difficult time embracing that freedom. Is it because we have no let go of the cross? Do we keep Christ on it staying focused on the suffering in an attempt to comfort our suffering or validate it? Death and sin could not hold Jesus Christ to the cross. It cannot hold the mighty men of God either. Instead of clinging we must release our hold just as Jesus told Mary Magdalene to not cling to Him while He was still in the state of body and spirit transition. But, now we can cling to the truth- the empty cross and the empty tomb signal the end of the slavery of death. In its place is the standard for love which is the Holy Spirit.

What is the value of one life? The truth is the value of one life, your life, is the life of Jesus Christ. The truth is the value of all our lives is the life of Jesus Christ. He gave His life to us that we might live with Him. He humbled Himself on the cross to die as the sacrificial payment for our freedom from sin. The debt has been paid in full for you, for me, for everyone. So, then when we see others, we must see the value in them. It is not based on works except the work of God through Jesus Christ. It is not based on opinion except that we might know God’s opinion of us is favor and blessing. It is not based on knowledge for knowledge will cease and fall away revealing the basic and simple truth that God has an everlasting love for each of us. If we focus on the value God has placed on others then we might treat them far differently than we do now. Even if we are doing it well now we can do better.

Paul wrote “in humility, value others above yourselves.” It doesn’t mean knock yourself down so that others appear to have more value. Too many people knock others down so they appear to have more value. Rather, it means to lift up others as having value just as Moses lifted the Old Testament standard and drove away the serpents of death and just as the New Testament standard was lifted up and drove away the serpent of death. Valuing others means committing to the truth that God desires for them to live eternally, abundantly and in loving peace. Lift up the truth and let it be known.

Didn’t Jesus take one, or all, for the team? Isn’t Paul’s instruction and encouragement to the mighty men of Philippi a working definition for true teamwork? Jesus had everything we want: life with the Father, life in Heaven, life free from the burdens of a sinful world. Yet, He surrendered it all to God in exchange for the opportunity to make us better. He put our desire for the very things He had at the top of His list because He wanted us to have it as well. It would cost Him His earthly life which He took on for our sake. He traded His life for ours. He took on the penalty of death for our sins so that we could put on the promise of life eternal and abundant.

We are part of God’s team. We have a purpose and place in this world that reaches farther than just to take care of our lives. Our purpose is to be a part of the winning team. The winning team looks out for each other. It puts the interests of others ahead of themselves. Yes, it works best when every member of the team is doing the same thing; but that doesn’t always happen. And when it doesn’t, it shouldn’t change how we conduct our lives. God continues to watch and provide. He has given us eternal life through His Son who happens to be our savior. He has given us the supply for our lives through His Holy Spirit. He has given us an identity which is none other than His own. We are not God but we are God’s!

And what is our purpose? Isn’t it to take one for the team? Lift a burden, ease a care, share a word, be a friend, confess the truth, profess our faith, love one another are all examples of taking one for the team and putting their interests above our own. Even if others may fall short because of their choices, it cannot be because we did not do our part. We must continue to live in the midst of God’s truth for our lives and trust Him in all things. We must, mighty men, live according to the purpose which God intended from the start- to let love be known.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”
