Life is not without a purpose and that purpose is to allow God’s love to be known among us and through us for all eternity.

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY:

1 John 4.9

“This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

His name is “Immanuel” which means “God with us.” And the elder John declared this truth in today’s Word as he said “This is how God showed His love among us.” How many people do you know who ask “Where is God?” Generally, the question is asked when bad things are happening to “good” people such as a failed marriage, the death of a loved one, persistent illness or the loss of a job. The faulty reasoning behind this question is “wherever God is there is never trouble or disasters.” This is the tendency of thinking God is near or far from us as if we are the center of all live and thinking. However, when such situations arise we need to put God at the center and ask ourselves “Where are we?” How close to God do we stay? Or are we like the wandering lamb or the prodigal son who venture out beyond where we think God is. We do this for our own benefit and not for the glory of God.

But, in truth, Jesus Christ, Immanuel, is the abiding presence of God in the world. This is how God’s love is shown among us. I am not speaking of merely between us but in the midst of us. God is an ever-present help in times of trouble. His love endures forever. But, without a true relationship with God which is based on being close to the God who is always close to us then the depth of sin and sorrow can sink to the level of Hell which is the ultimate separation from God. And this world is not Hell. It certainly may feel like it from time to time but that is only when we find ourselves far from God. It is not because God is not with us. He is always with us and this we know because Jesus came into the world not only to walk with us but to die for us so that we might live with Him forever.

Jesus, Immanuel, the Christ and Messiah, is our guarantee of a God who is never far from us regardless of the situation in which we find ourselves. And if we will admit and confess that God is with us in times that are good or bad then we will find the strength, courage, wisdom and humility to live in and through that situation. As long as we are citizens of the world there will always be trouble because sin still roams the earth like a roaring lion ready to devour those who are weak. And if we are far from God then we indeed are weak. But, if we recognize that God is not only with us but near to us then in our moment of weakness His strength will prevail. And in those times when we are strong and we say that God is with us then in our moment of strength we become a blessing to others and a glory to God. Recognize, mighty men, that if in our times of strength we take the credit instead of giving it to God then we fall into weakness called arrogance and conceit. Fortunately, God’s love is with us even then waiting to bring healing and wisdom upon our confession of wrong actions and/or thinking and our profession of faith that Jesus alone is the Christ and the deliverer of the sinner to become a saint.

It is in and through Christ alone, the essence of God’s love, that we can have life and have it abundantly. This is the way that God desires it for all His children beginning with Christ and continuing through you and me. And when we model that wisdom and right relationship it becomes possible for others to see it and come to desire it for themselves. And when they do, then God will not be far off but a very present help in times of trouble as well as that presence of joy in times of peace.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Isaiah 49.7

“This is what the Lord says— the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel— to Him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers: ‘Kings will see You and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen You.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Isaiah had gone into the temple to pray and seek the comfort of God’s presence in a time of grief for himself and a nation upon the death of King Uzziah. It was a difficult time for everyone in the transition of leadership. The history of Israel’s kings had more low points in it than high. I can only imagine a “what’s next” mentality was on the heart, mind and spirit of all those in Israel. Little did Isaiah know when he entered the temple to offer sacrifices and petitions that what he was seeking was about to happen. He wanted the presence of God to be real and transforming. What he received was the real presence of God. That vision was transforming changing “a man with unclean lips among a people of unclean lips” into a prophet of God for Israel and all the world.

Powerfully, the transformation included the prophetic description of the Messiah who was yet to come. The prophets of God were purposeful in their work because they laid the foundation of faith upon which the Messiah would build His community of faith- the Church. In each of the prophets we can see an inkling of what was yet to come. Each one had received from God their share of the truth. They called the people into accountability and then gave them the opportunity to choose wisely to follow God. They gave them the consequences of deciding for or against following God. The depictions of those consequences left little to the imagination- it was black and white. In God there is no gray.

And for us, mighty men, there is the same truth and reality when we go into our place of prayer. We must be like Isaiah and seek the presence and the comfort of God. We must be ready to experience it and have no doubts. Jesus has shown us that we can access the Father in Heaven and He will be revealed to us. He will be revealed by the Holy Spirit of God. We will be given the truth that is needed for our lives so that we can continue to be transformed into the fullness of being the mighty men of God. We may feel unworthy but God has chosen us just as He chose the prophets and just as He chose His own Son to come into the world that we might know this truth about God and ourselves.

Isaiah gave us the truth of the coming Messiah at whose name every knee will bow and every tongue confess saying “He is Lord.” His name is Jesus and there is no other. There is no use in seeking any truth apart from God. We must be honest in our petition before God and wait upon His word for all of our situations. We must cover them with the prayer of faith and faithfulness. He will answer. He has already answered us and that answer waits for us to hear it and listen to it.

God’s hope for humanity was, is and always will be Jesus the Christ. I am sure that God would have wanted it any other way than His Only Son to be crucified so that all who would believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life. But, the power of being Chosen is without question and points every mighty man of God to defining life with life everlasting. How the world wants us to use death as the defining moment of our lives. From the moment of conception each of us stands on the road to death because we live in this world. But, when we become followers of Jesus that road does not come to a dead end. Death is just a bend in the road for the mighty men of God. Around that bend is the vista of Heaven where there shall be no more dying, sickness, sorrow, crying, suffering or hungering for life.

I remember one of those examples of the bend of the road vista. Travelling with friends to Santa Fe, New Mexico, we decided to travel through Truth or Consequences and take a state highway to come through the mountains from the east. As we drove over a long rise out of Truth or Consequences there suddenly appeared a wide expanse of lush, green valley. The mountains rose on all sides. There seemed to be a pause in time it was so breathtaking. We were certainly surprised by the view. It was so unexpected and yet so welcoming. Fitting that it would be on our way our of Truth or Consequences. It is like life for the faithful. We are greeted by the truth of God’s love for us and welcomed into a place of eternal life and peace or we suffer the consequences of not accepting the journey of faith, hope and love.

Isaiah’s vision of God came during a time of mourning for his king, Uzziah. He took his grief to the temple and there to worship God in memorial for his king. He had no thought of consequences only of the truth. The land was in mourning and had no king. The feeling of being alone and lost was overwhelming. Yet, he had no other recourse than to seek God’s presence. It was a place of comfort, peace and rest. How surprised he must have been to find at the rise of the steps in the temple to be greeted by God Himself. Nothing makes a place more holy than to see God in it. We long for the day when we shall be face to face with the Trinity, the Three as One. In that moment, as with Isaiah, we will find life not death. In that moment we will understand the full meaning of Jesus as King of kings and Lord of lords. We will want to rise up and bow down. We will want to sing praises and find ourselves at a loss for words. We will see the vast expanse of Heaven and be lost in the singularity of the moment. Our mourning will turn to dancing, our sorrow to joy and our fear to love- pure love.

And why? Because in Jesus Christ alone, God’s Chosen, we find that we are indeed the chosen. God chose us to receive His Son as our Savior. He always chooses life for us. It has never been any other way. And we, mighty men of God, must choose life as well whenever we enter into God’s presence. We must walk with confidence knowing that one day at the final rise of our journey the valley of Eternity will be revealed. And in that moment we will be welcomed in to see the glory of God fulfilled just as was promised..

Thanks be to God!

And that is the truth that all men should seek and accept.

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Isaiah 49.6

“God says: ‘It is too small a thing for you to be My servant
to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that My salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

As mighty men of God we dare not to forget our calling is beyond the spheres of influence given to us as family, friends and colleagues. We must be prepared to declare God’s salvation and our commitment to serve Him at any time, in any place and to any person. We are to have the comfort level of Jesus in us. And we have this comfort level as we remember the outpouring of the Holy Spirit promised to us when we enter into righteous relationship with Him our our profession of faith and baptism. Just as it was not enough for Israel to be Israel to all of its people (and that seemed and seems to be a fairly difficult accomplishment) they were to be Israel to all the world. Perhaps the problem arose when Israel wanted all the world to be Israel. God called Israel to be Israel. He desired to use Israel to call all the world to be in relationship with Him on His terms.

As Israel would have demonstrated its faithfulness to be a righteous and holy people there would have been the invitation sought by others on how to be one of God’s people as well. But, too often what Israel seemed to have demonstrated was how not to be in right relationship with God. When God called Isaiah into the prophetic ministry he responded “I am a man of unclean lips who dwells in the midst of a people with unclean lips.” The words of their mouths did not speak well of God. They spoke against God. They spoke against each other. They spoke against those who were not of Israel. They did not keep their promises. They practiced partisanship and bitterness. They divided their own people into haves and have nots. Truly the words of Jesus concerning a house divided carried the legacy of Israel’s behavior.

Mighty men, we cannot be divided against one another and especially not against God. The words of our mouths, the meditations of our hearts and the works of our hands must be in sublime and divine harmony. We are to be the examples of God’s love in action. We are to build up the body of Christ and not tear it down. Nor are we to create it in our image instead of being created in the image of God. Yes, Jesus was sent into the world to be the Christ of the world. If there will only be a few who will follow it will not be because Jesus confined His ministry to a few. It will be because only a few have dared to believe the truth of who He is and who we are to be. Thankfully there are more than a few. But, whatever number of followers exists today should never be enough. We are called to go into the world as ambassadors of the Messianic community seeking to teach the truth and extend a welcome invitation to dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

Thanks be to God!

And that is the truth that all men should seek and accept.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”
