Regardless of what some NFL players may think about the value of God, He is priceless and worthy of our praise, devotion and service. Give to God what is God’s!

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Psalm 48.1a

“Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

I don’t usually respond on here concerning postings I see in the visual media, but I am sadly struck by a comment made by one NFL football player in response to the mega-contract extension given Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck is an outstanding professional quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts (for those who may not know who he is.) His new contract makes him the highest paid quarterback ever. He is the franchise player, make or break, for the Colts. I will not argue the outrageous, do they deserve or it or not, pay debate. As long as fans will pay high ticket prices to see the game and for food and beverages of choice and trinkets then the game becomes bigger than far too many other things in this world. One of those, according to the dialogue between Luck and another play, is God.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am a Dallas Cowboy fan from the beginning. I have seen highs and lows. I have learned to keep the game and fan allegiance in perspective. When they played in Texas Stadium I even enjoyed the reasoning for leaving a hole in the roof so that God could watch the game from Heaven. The jests of Tom Landry being the Chief High Priest of football was clever. The cheerleaders identified as vestal virgins was a bit much. But, nothing is bigger than God; not even football. And so when I saw the comments “Nobody is work that. God isn’t even worth that.” followed by “God doesn’t plan quarterback.” I had to take a serious pause. What price do we think can be put on God? God is worthy of our praise and all that we can give to Him including our lives. But, God is priceless and cannot be bought and paid for. Jesus paid the price for our eternal lives so that we could enjoy the presence of God forever. How much are each of us worth? One life for many?

So, let us keep our reverence for God in the forefront and our worldliness under control. Even in our jesting we must be careful what we say because people are listening and some take what we say seriously. Some are looking for stupid statements to validate their own lack of decision-making. We are supposed to turn people on to God and not make a mockery of Him, His love, His mercy and His desire to dwell with us forever. And if He chooses to watch football games in Heaven then I think there will be some very good games to enjoy because there are a lot of Christian athletes to go around.

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For Istanbul after the tragic airport terrorist attack yesterday with the loss of life, peace and security for victims, families, community and visitors
* For those whose burden in life creates such desperation that taking the life of another as a means of escape and problem-solving seems reasonable and for their victims that they may have peace; as seen in the sex-trafficking slavery business of young girls
* Spiritual-based and not political-based decisions on the world’s economy coming into question and the UK vote to secede from the European Union
* Blessings of peace, joy and reconciliation as God purposes for all our families
* For God’s definitive word on this country’s political agenda and future being transformed into a godly mandate that glorifies God and meets the needs of others instead of man’s agenda leading to the Abomination of Desolation
* For the end of the ISIS regime and replacing it with the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ into all the nations of the earth
* For the homeless, especially now as summer heat and drought bring searing temperatures
* For family and friends battling cancer and dementia at all stages of life and those seeking to be their caregivers and those who are their families
* For wisdom among the world’s leaders as wars and rumors of wars rise up; earthquakes, floods, great winds and fire abound; and civil unrest reaches out across all secular and non-secular lines and to lead God’s people into the truth concerning judgment, the end of days and Jesus’ return for we are moving closer to it each day.
* For those who are seeking to put an end to human trafficking that their success would be overwhelming so that the healing may be equally so
* For Louisville, Kentuckiana, Goodwill, NECC and the people of the USA
* For the needs of my family near and far and our friends healing, reconciliation and wisdom; for a new job placement that aligns with God’s purpose intended for me; for needs of my family now that far exceed our ability to handle on our own and comfort to our parents who are committed to their new realities; wisdom to know truth and relate it adequately; for guidance in a difficult financial situation

PRAYER CELEBRATIONS (where we see Him at work in the world):

* God continues to provide prosperity at 5226 as I trust Him in so doing and give thanks praying for sufficient and proficient employees; but a new job is coming as I seek His will and not my own being humbled in what I still need to learn as I wait for His unveiling
* Continuing to survive challenges placed before us at work knowing God has something more in store for us for His glory; abundant harvest now ready to receive the harvesters
* God is preparing me for our next ministry with current conditions
* God is good all the time and all the time God is good- even when we cannot see it!

ABIDING IN PRAYER: Father, forgive us when we lose perspective on keeping first things first. You are worthy and more valuable to us that anything in this or any other realm. Thank You for valuing us in the name of Jesus our Christ. AMEN.

Repentance is not merely emptying out the sin from our lives but seeking the fulfillment of God’s blessing in us for righteousness, peace, faith, hope and love.

HIS WORD for TODAY:

2 Peter 3.9

“The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Some, Christians and non-Christians alike, may wonder why God has allowed the world to become such a mess. As mighty men of God, we must take the position that God did not allow the world to become a mess- we did. God, in the beginning, gave dominion and authority to subdue and steward creation to provide for the needs of each generation to His glory. The world is ours. Yes, it belongs to God and He will surely redeem it and transform it again into the splendor in which it was first created. But, He gave us the duty, opportunity and responsibility to be the bearers of His presence as caretakers of all life on this planet. So, the question may be “Why did we allow the world to become such a mess?”

It is too easy to take the viewpoint of “sin made all the difference.” Yes, sin made the difference but man opened the door of his own heart, mind, body, soul and spirit to the enemy of God. He has even invited him in and made him a welcome guest at times. The story of the man who cast out an evil spirit from his home comes to mind. Jesus said that the spirit went out into the wilderness only to find others like himself. They returned to his “house” to find it empty and the doors and windows wide open. Now the fate of the house was worse than the first. As I reflect on the passage of His Word for Today, I must sincerely consider that the house being used as a teaching tool was not a literal house but the man himself. It was good to repent and drive out the demon from his life. However, what did he put into its place? Nature abhors a vacuum and so does the human life. We must be filled with something.

What are we filling the voids with in our lives? What are we emptying out of our lives by not believing the indwelling of God’s spirit already invested in us by Jesus Christ? We could be tossing out that which is meant for good because we are seeking to understand it in human and worldly terms. Repentance is not meant to merely confess our wrongdoings. Repentance means taking action to be just the opposite of who we were and don’t want to be. God is patient. He is not coming so quickly that we do not have the chance to get it right, or at least be better at getting it right. But, God will never be too late. That is a promise fulfilled already in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God is waiting on us to be ready to receive what He desires to share with us- life and peace. The longer we delay in being ready the more it seems God is unwilling to answer our prayer. He is willing when we will be honest with ourselves and Him about our sin and our need for His redeeming love, mercy and grace.

HIS WORD for TODAY:

2 Peter 3.9

“The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

The understanding of repentance is a “turning in the opposite direction.” As sinners, especially adult sinners, we act as small children desiring to know our parents care for us. We tempt the rules and warnings set out for us by doing what we are not supposed to do. Some may call it rebellion. Some may call it a striving for independence. Some may call it a cry for attention. There is truth in all three explanations as children grow up from year to year. I would challenge us to consider the last as the most important. I do so because even as adults we are still doing what we know we shouldn’t do. Yet, we want God to listen to our prayers and answer our needs. It is like we want God to pursue us as if we were still children.

Well, we are still children. Children of a mighty and heavenly Father. He has pursued us by sending His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. But, He knows that no matter what He does there is still the need for each of us to repent and come back toward Him. Peter writes about the delay in God answering prayers and meeting our needs. It isn’t a delay as if He is absent or inattentive. Peter proposes that it is a waiting to see if we are acting out of disobedience or if we are struggling because we haven’t grasped the truth of God’s purpose in our lives. His delay in answering may have more to do with wanting us to deal with the decisions to act apart from righteousness and confess we can’t do this on our own. He won’t be coming after us when we do. He is already with us. He is right there beside us. He is wanting to help but He wants to know we really desire the help to be who we are meant to be. We do not have to “play games” to find our if God loves us. We already know He loves us. He wants us to discover if we truly love Him. If we do, then we will come to Him just as the prodigal son did to his father and his Heavenly Father and be taken in and blessed as the loved child we had always been.

Set your mind on God and His righteousness which is yours through Jesus Christ and authentic life and true peace are in your grasp where death cannot separate you from His abiding love and provision.

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Romans 8.6

“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Paul challenges mighty men in every generation with his written expression of the revelation of God. In this verse, he is calling into accountability where our minds are; what are we thinking. How many times have we said, or heard “What are you thinking?” If we allow our minds to consider only the needs of the body (including the cravings and emotions) then we miss the indwelling opportunity of the spirit to make all things new. If we allow our minds to be led by the Spirit, Paul exclaims, then our minds are bound to life in the spirit (and therefore better prepared to live in this world) and peace.

Peace, shalom, is abiding in the very midst of God. Jesus said it this way “The Kingdom of Heaven is in the midst of you.” If it is in the midst of us then it is possible for us to be in the midst of God. Just as God walked in the Garden of Eden to be with His creation so He is still walking today in the Garden of the Earth. He is still seeking us. Remember, we are like Adam in our sin cowering in fear of being discovered because God is walking and looking for us. He is calling out for us. That is why sinners do not want to believe in God because His authority which can be judgment and condemnation creates a burden they cannot free themselves from. But, Jesus is walking with Him in the Garden of the earth. He is reminding us that we can be free from this burden of sin by believing in Him. We have nothing to fear from God because His wrath is visited on the unbeliever and the deceiver. In Christ, we are made to be believers and receivers. Because we believe and set our minds on higher things we receive life and peace.

The only true way to escape the villainy of this world is to dive headlong into pursuing the Kingdom of God at every turn. Using things of the world to escape the world only bind you more tightly to the world. Seeking the things of the Kingdom keep your feet on the paths of righteousness for His Name’s Sake and your benefit.

HIS WORD for TODAY:

Romans 8.6

“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Is your exhaustion keeping you from staying close to God? What escapes do you use to “separate yourself” from the world that is troubling you? If it is things of the world such as television, more work, online games, internet surfing, pursuing dreams of vacations and getaways on a bucketlist, alcohol, pornography, drugs, etc. then you are not actually separating yourself from the world that is troubling you. The reality is that you may be sinking yourself deeper into the world. As mighty men of God we should only be going deeper into the Word to prepare us better to go out into the world. Christ has overcome the world. The weight of it sought to separate Him from God and render Him useless to us. But, regardless of the situation of His life, Jesus pressed deeper into the Word of God by dwelling on the higher things of life which are in the Spirit. Jesus focused on the fruit of the spirit. That fruit was His healthy diet. It is not literal food but godly food which is planted and bears the seeds of authentic living in the lives of the believers.

I was considering this myself as I find myself overwhelmed in my current situation. I realize I cannot become mindless of the world and dwell part-time with God. I must become mindful of God at all times in the world. And here is one illustration. Reading makes me tired. What better way to fall asleep than to read and pray upon what I read that is in God’s word or in the writing of others who are sharing what God has revealed to them for their lives! If we are praying for a change then we must be intentional about the change we need to make as well. We arrive at the very place we focus on. If we are focused on the world and participate in the things of this world even with the intent to stay away from the part of the world we are in at the moment then we are still in the world. Jesus taught “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and the rest for your life will be supplied.”

“Let HIM be seen in the mighty men of 2016.”
