HIS WORD for TODAY!

John 20.1,2

“Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Much has always been made about “what time is it?” when it comes to understanding the future. Jesus was confronted with numerous questions for signs of “the time” when the Kingdom of God under the rule of the Messiah would begin. Jesus listed “wars, rumors of wars, etc.” as portents like birth pangs for the return of the Messiah to rule the earth. But, He said, “As to that day and time only God knows.” But, such open-ended thinking leads to human conjecture and assumption. We see the same here in John’s reviewing of the events on the first day of the week when Mary Magdalene approached the tomb with the intention of properly anointing the body for burial. Strange, is it not, that the body may have already been decaying as it was entering the “third day.” That would be an assumption as well on the reader and student of the Word. In truth, it would have only been two chronological days and if the weather continued to be a cool Spring the tomb would have been more like a refrigerator preserving the body better for a longer period of time.

But, Mary M makes an assumption seeing the empty tomb that someone had taken the body. She goes first to the disciples in the upper room to report it. Did she have some suspicion that they had taken the body? But, upon returning to the tomb with Peter and John and investigating further things began to change about this sign of the time. Peter and John went back to share with the other disciples what they had seen. But, Mary remained. And in this time of wonder Jesus appeared to her. It was now the beginning of her revelation because she dared to believe. The same should be said for the mighty men of God. Blood moons, earthquakes, military invasions, threats on Israel and all nations who support her, storms and the rise of evil people ruling throughout the world are not solid facts leading to that specific day except to alert us that the day is coming. Sin still is having its way among the people of God. Satan is still kicking against the goads. But, we cannot assume or presume to know the day itself. We can continue to fall into our faith that Jesus is the Christ, risen from the dead and ready to appear to us for consolation and empowerment to do His will on earth as it is in Heaven.

What time is it? It is time to get to work on the things that make for good in the world to the glory of God.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

Desecration or designation? In the span of three days this debate raged from the Mount of Olives to the Temple to Golgotha. The debate continues today. What has happened with Jesus? Judas Iscariot, fueled by the voice of Satan, put his “Christ” agenda on the line and led the Temple guard and key Sanhedrin leaders to the Mount of Olives where Jesus had gathered with His disciples to pray. He broke the seal of trust and divulged where they had been coming during their stay in Jerusalem. It wasn’t so much a secret hiding place but a special sanctified place to escape the busyness of the city. And it was no secret to Jesus either that Judas would come. What others had applauded as turning in a traitor and blasphemer to justice became a spiritual coup for God in the world. It wasn’t the only broken trust under the cover of darkness. The Sanhedrin actually violated their own rules by holding court in secret during the night watch. But, again, what they intended for good, though wrong, was tranformed into greatness by God’s mercy.

And there in the Temple while Jesus hung on the cross the veil of the Holy of Holies was torn in half exposing it to the outside world. Many believed that when the Chief High Priest went in once a year to present the perfect sacrifice before the altar of God, he then would die. In this instance it was true as Jesus was the perfect sacrifice and the Chief High Priest of Heaven and earth. The veil could not contain what others believed must be kept secret. God would not be contained by an altar nor a veil. Instead, the appropriate substitution offering for the sin of the world was offered. The seal of silence was broken and the truth became exposed to the world.

And this was not the only coming out of truth. As the women approached the tomb before the sun rose, they found the seal placed by the Romans to certify the tomb’s contents and purpose had also been broken. Either grave robbers and an act of God were the perpetrators of this event. Of course, no more than the best intentions of man, the ceremonial altar behind closed curtains or the cross of Calvary the grave could not hold back the truth of God’s power and love. This is an Almighty God whose purpose and intention was to free His children from the bondage of sin. Where Satan had created and convinced humanity they were enslaved, God broke the seal of the lie and released the truth. Jesus died for our sins and lives for our righteousness. No longer would death be the bond of slavery. Life stood in its place as the tie that binds our hearts with God.

What do we expect to find, mighty men, when we approach the altar of God in our hearts, or the court of Heaven in our minds or the presence of Christ in our spirits? Are we led by our own intentions and ideations? Or are we led by the hope and expectation of finding the living Christ who is Lord of Life?

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

In Christ, we have overcome the first “eighth day” disaster where death came to all men with the “eighth day” victory of eternal life over eternal death. But, there is another day coming which shall overwhelm all days previous and bring true justice by faith into all creation.

Under the cover of darkness, the women had seen a great light. Sounds like the prophecy of Isaiah who declared “Those who walked in darkness have seen a great light; on those who were dwelling in darkness a light has dawned.” (Isaiah 9.2) The light was more than the sun rising in the east. It was the beginning of a much different day than just a new day. The light was the glory of God revealed in the truth of resurrection. Death was proven to be an ineffective enemy of God and now of man through Jesus Christ. On the day following the Sabbath and the special Sabbath, Jesus was raised from the dead. It is a clear scriptural understanding that Jesus was raised on the first day of the week. I will call it the “Eighth Day Truth.”

We had another “eighth day truth” presented in scripture. Granted it was not most likely on the eighth day but it is what followed the seventh day, the Sabbath. I am talking about the temptation of Adam through Eve by Satan. On the seventh day, God rested from His labors and sanctified the day, set it aside, as a holy day. It wasn’t really about doing no work on the sabbath. It was about putting God first and foremost in the heart, mind and soul of man. The sabbath is about remembering all the God had done and giving thanks for the provision of creation in the lives of humankind. It is to be a day of thanksgiving and praise, enjoying the favor and presence of God without concern for anything else. But then, as the story of creation draws to a close, the story of how sin entered into the world as a destructive element is introduced. By this temptation accepted the grace of God became tempered with the revelation of judgment which led to the need for the Law. Instead of Adam and Eve resting in the fact that God said they were good and blessed it became a determined lifestyle of proving and earning the status of good. That is an effort in futility that has plagued man ever since.

But, on resurrection day, the new “eighth day truth,” the plague afflicting humanity was given a cure. In Christ, by His resurrection, we are made into new creatures not born of flesh but of spirit- the Holy Spirit. Once again, in Christ, we are called good and have to do nothing to earn the status beyond believing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and accept Him as our personal Lord and Savior. In Christ all men have the opportunity to step beyond the burden of judgment for our sins into the blessing of mercy for God’s righteousness. In Adam, the “eighth day truth” was age of wandering men, Israel, in search of God through good works. Our works do not actually impress God. He is glad we can do good works because it helps others. But, our works and even our obedience to the Law are insufficient to effect salvation leading to eternal life. In Christ, the new “eighth day truth” is the age of the Church, the Body of Christ, in search of wandering and wondering brothers and sisters to bring them back by faith to present to God as acceptable. Our works are not for salvation but of salvation because it is by God alone that we have life and have it abundantly and eternally.

HIS WORD for TODAY!

Joel 1.15

“Alas for that day! For the day of the Lord is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty [El Shaddai].”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Lest we become complacent, the mighty men of God and those who are not remember that our God is all-powerful, all-knowing and ever present. With the promise of the eternity of peace through His grace comes the promise of devastation of those who will oppose His peace. It will be a terrible day. It will be one that many will beg for an end. It will be a day when the silence comes and those who sought relief from the terror will tremble knowing that more is to come. It is not a threat that God declares His intention to rid the earth of its spiritual and physical pestilence. It is God’s promise. Humankind threatens itself by refusing to humble itself before God seeking mercy and to graciously receive the provision of His awesome love. But, to think that God is all warm and cuddly and wouldn’t hurt a flea? That, my mighty friends, is a misconception.

God’s love must be aggressive in order to defeat an aggressive enemy. Satan has no feelings for the welfare of humanity other than to gain service for his weak self. His days are numbered. He knows his end is coming. But, even in the face of such ultimate defeat which began at the cross of Calvary Satan is not wasting one moment to prove some superiority over humanity as an insult to God. How many men of this world are wasting their time proving their superiority to others and ignoring the the Day of the Lord which is coming? They are like a cancer that lives only to destroy and render its host’s life purposeless. And while we do not enjoy the thought of such aggressive therapies such as chemo and radiation, we know of their existence as man’s efforts to save life. I can speak from experience as I have watched many, including my own mother who died of cancer 32 years ago today, suffer greatly with the hope of surviving. Of course, their decision to undergo such treatments is not a surrender to the enemy nor an ignoring of God’s ability to heal. It speaks as a testimony of “fighting the good fight.” In order to be a survivor of that terrible day, the day of judgment when there will only be life and death and no shadow of inbetween, one must surrender one’s own will to that of God’s and join in the fight. God’s will shall prevail. That is the message of “the day of the Lord.” We fight for life not to escape death. We die to self and live for Christ in order to live beyond the grasp of eternal death. That day is when we see the fullness of God’s wrath against the enemy of those who seek the fullness of God’s love.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

HIS WORD for TODAY!

John 6.35-40

“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen Me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do My will but to do the will of Him who sent Me. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of all those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. For My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Cast your mind back to the days of Moses when the Hebrews were overwhelmed with hunger in the wilderness. Their numbers had far exceeded all they could carry out of Egypt. Their food supply had finally been exhausted. Now they labored with a gnawing in their bellies that challenged their resolve to remain faithful to the call of God for the Promised Land. God responded by sending manna from Heaven. Remember, the manna came with a caveat to gather only what was needed for each family on each day but the sixth. On the sixth day there would be a double portion so that no work had to be done on the Sabbath. God is obedient to His own plan for the order of righteousness. Praise God.

But, as I think of this event in their sojourn, the Spirit whispers to me the days of creation and God’s plan for the sixth day. On that day there was a double-portion offered as well. At the beginning of the day God made all living creatures that would dwell on the land. At midday, God made humankind in His image and gave them dominion over the creation which God brought into being. Humanity was the double-portion of God’s blessing as man and woman and as humankind in the midst of all other creatures. Their lives depended on the goodness of humanity and their faithfulness to the charge given to them. The same is seen in the provision of manna from Heaven. Faithful to the task of gathering appropriately there would always be enough to sustain them and to support them even for the Sabbath. Do so inappropriately and they found that God was still in control because what was overdone rotted.

Why is this information important? Because Jesus is the bread of Heaven come down from earth to feed humanity and satisfy their hunger for righteousness. He is a double-portion offering which brings life to both the flesh and the spirit. Those who seek Him out and gather His Word in shall find fulfillment in their lives. And on the “last day” Jesus will lift them up. Well, we know the “last day” of the week would be Saturday- the Sabbath. But, in order for the people to be prepared for praise and worship they had to make good use of the “last day” of the work week which is Friday. On that day, the day before Sabbath, they received blessing sufficient to allow their attention to be totally focused on God. Their spirits would be lifted up because of what God had done for them in anticipation. God has anticipated our needs of flesh and spirit. He has meet that double need perfectly in Jesus Christ. He is the bread of life, the bread of the world, the bread of righteousness, the bread of Heaven. Come to Him and eat. Take and share Him with others so they can know life and have it abundantly.

When someone does something nice for you and you feel a bit compelled to turn it down because your pride is too strong, remember Jesus didn’t ask us if He could lay His life down for us so we could have eternal forgiveness and the life of hope and peace it brings. Jesus died for us and offered His life to us so we might have life and have it abundantly. Now, your pride may still say “No thanks, Jesus.” What a tragedy in either case to miss the blessing and the opportunity to share the blessing with others.

HIS WORD for TODAY!

Deuteronomy 26.17-19

“You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to Him, that you will keep His decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to Him. And the Lord has declared this day that you are His people, His treasured possession as He promised, and that you are to keep all His commands. He has declared that He will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations He has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as He promised.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

It is said “If you do not stand for anything, you will fall for everything.” There is that hint of gullibility to this adage. But, there is far more in it than “don’t believe everything you hear.” As mighty men of God, the world needs to hear our declarations of faith, hope and love. The world needs to hear of our commitment to serve the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, body and strength. Our fellow Christ followers also need to hear our statements of assurance so they will grasp more firmly to the blessings which God has prepared and delivered to us all for our good, the welfare of others and to His glory.

As mighty men of God we are to have our declaration days. These are the days when the truth of our identity as God-fearers and Christ-followers will not be a silent witness or merely assumed because we haven’t done anything wrong. The rich young ruler would fall prey to the identification of being righteous because he had not broken the commandments when the truth is he never was in a situation to even fulfill the commandments. If I have not done anything wrong by doing nothing at all doesn’t make us right. Yes, as mighty men we are not perfect. But, our perfection is being crafted in our daily walk of faith in Jesus Christ. Where are efforts to do good come up a little short, Jesus is able to take it further unto completion. His whole life and ministry was about finishing the purpose for which He came into the world. His life was filled with good works but it was at the cross where we see His ultimate declaration of being a God-fearer and Christ-follower. Yes, I say He was a Christ-follower because He took up His cross as He taught and lived out the lesson. He showed us the way, the truth and the life. He declared His obedience to His Father, our God, and His love for God’s people.

As mighty men, we must have those days when we make aloud and before all the world our declaration of identity. The world needs to know there are those who will not merely assume they are righteous but put their faith on the line. The world needs to know of our pride and humility to be associated with the name of Jesus. The world needs to know that we stand for something and will not fall for everything. And the world needs to know that in those times when we do fall and come short of God’s expectation, He is there to lift us up and set up back in the right direction with love and encouragement. Our God has declared His commitment to us when He said “I will be Your God and you will be My people.”

HIS WORD for TODAY!

Luke 4.16-21

“He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ Then He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on Him. He began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

How fitting is it that today, Yom Kippur- the Day of Atonement, God places this scripture before us. I am so grateful for the mercy and love of God to provide the atoning of my sins, yes- of the sins of all men, so they can become mighty men. He has even described who the mighty men are:

1) The poor- they shall be rich in spirit and in truth first and foremost while prosperity in this world becomes relevant to our desire to believe and serve in love and faithfulness toward God and one another;
2) The prisoners- we have all sinned and fallen short of the intended glory which God desires for us and if not for grace our sins would mean eternal death;
3) The blind- the enemy of the world, Satan, desires to blind us all to the truth of his vileness and God’s desire to share in compassion to restore His people to greatness yet God prevails and opens our eyes to the truth of His Presence and the meaning and purpose of our lives through Jesus Christ;
4) The oppressed- the weight of the world is heavy upon our shoulders bringing down our spirits and our hope yet the Master Craftsman, Jesus the Christ, has fashioned a yoke of freedom where our burdens are shared and together the load of worldliness is lifted and carried through this life as the cross which once was of shame but now is of victory;
5) The favored- Jesus declared “Today in your hearing this scripture has been fulfilled. It was a declaration of Jubilee when all debts were to be forgiven and the people of God should return to their rightful places upon their choice. God gives us the choice of blessing and of promise. He does not force us into making this decision to be free to pursue righteousness. He guides us with wisdom and truth and then seals His covenant by His Spirit and the blood of the Lamb. Those who choose to believe are blessed and highly favored because their choice is to honor God and follow Him all the days of their lives.

Who are the mighty men of God? Their identity is not bound by economics, criminal convictions, physical disabilities, public opinion or secular arrogance. The mighty men of God are those who put their lives, faith, trust and hope in Jesus Christ. Their lot has been cast not to decide who will get what was left of earthly possessions upon His death on the cross. Rather, their lot is cast to shed the desire for earthly living in order to be clothed with heaven’s finery- the robes of servants and sons of the Mighty God and author of our Salvation.

God is good…all the time. All the time…God is good.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”
