HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 3.1-3

“In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Make straight paths for HIM! I pray you hear the great sense of anticipation in this scriptural, prophetic calling. Make straight paths for Him to come into your life. Remove the roadblocks and detours and excuses and let there be a clear path for Jesus to come into your life. He wants to be the Lord of your life because He loves you. He has proven His willingness and desire for you to have the very best needed in your life. He went to the cross for you. This whole Holy Week of remembrance is exactly that- a week of remembering how Jesus accepted the fullest purpose of His life for your behalf, and mine. He was truly the mightiest man of God this world has ever and will ever see. He confronted the naysayers on the road leading into Jerusalem among the people of God who had undertaken the Passover Pilgrimage who wanted Him to silence His followers. He said, “If I did, even the rocks would cry out.” He confronted the false practices in the temple where temple economics outweighed spiritual economics. He said, “This is a house of prayer and you have made it a den of thieves.” This is just at the start of the week. Don’t you see, Jesus was making a clear path for God to come back to Jerusalem and through it into all the world.

God came into the world through His Son, Jesus of Nazareth. He wants to come into our world each day through the Jesus in His mighty men. We are the portals of proclamation. We are the places where He wants to pour out the blessings of forgiveness and renewal and reconciliation. He is making straight ways for us so that we clearly understand our purpose in the earth. He is not mincing priorities. He is defeating polarities. He sees the diversity but abhors the divergency. He knows there are many but He desires that there only be one- one people serving one Lord consecrated by one birth and blessed with one spirit. Make straight paths for the Savior to enter into the lives of those in your world by getting straight with God. You can do this by aligning with His Word and following His Spirit.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

Mighty men, it is our duty and responsibility to be to today’s generation as John the Baptizer was to his. We are to call the nations to a state of readiness and repentance. It is our voice that now must cry out in the wildernesses of sin, death, doubt, anger, fear, confusion, disillusion, sex, drugs, alcohol and hate to proclaim the day of the Lord that is coming again.

Whether it is to the saint or the sinner, we all have the need to improve our lives by drawing closer to God. We cannot get close to God unless we are one with Christ: He in us by His Holy Spirit and we in Him by our confession of faith and our profession of love and service to God’s people. There is none perfect among us for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory God intended for our lives in this world. I know, for I am a sinner saved by grace. The reminders of my failures are obvious to me and I stand in the need of healing for family, friends and colleagues where my service did not live up to God’s expectations. But, in Christ we are renewed and revived. Healing is in His wings and by His Holy Spirit He can restore what was lost. But, we cannot wait for Him we must go out to meet Him. We must go straightway to Jesus and remain honest before Him. It is in our humility and honesty that the truth of Jesus Christ is made known in us. He wants what is best for our lives. It is this best that He died for on the cross of Calvary so that the truth of God’s love be revealed for all the world to see.

We know that without God’s love and forgiveness we would have no hope in this world. Too much of it is determined by man’s will and willfulness instead of obedience to God. Man seeks only what is truly good for himself. Mighty men seek what is right in the sight of God for the good of others that brings glory and honor to God’s name. Prepare the way of the Lord this week, mighty men. Extend the invitation and let nothing stand in your way to help others come to Jesus and live!

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

March 29, 2015

Today is recognized among Christian Churches as Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday is when we believe that Jesus rode into Jerusalem as the Christ of God to the joy of the people and the concern of the leadership. It begins a week of many life-turning events leading up to His judgment, death, burial and resurrection. He is the One who has truly made us one in the sight of God. He is the true Groom of the Kingdom and the Church is His true bride.

HIS WORD for Today:

Genesis 12.10-13

“Now there was a famine in the land (Canaan), and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe. As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, ‘I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

It is said “Behind every great man is a good woman.” I am glad to say that there is a great woman who stands behind me and with me on all sides. I do not know if this makes me great, for I am the righteousness of God, but I know it makes me better. Abram must have heard this saying in its own form and knew that Sarai would make his life better by making it safe. Isn’t it interesting that so many religious pundits, theologians and church leaders have promoted the downplay of women’s important roles as human beings and leaders because they attributed sin in the world to Eve? The negative consequences of Adam and Eve had been laid on the shoulders of Eve. Women had lost their rights and privileges in cultures built on such hate and misunderstanding. If anyone is at fault it would have been Adam who stood idly by to watch in secret what was happening between the serpent, Satan, and Eve. I have no doubt he wanted to see what would happen. This didn’t put Eve to the test but God. Ultimately, it only put Adam to the test because he failed. He did not stop Eve. He ate of the apple, too, disobeying God further, he urged the hiding in hope of escaping God’s wrath and he even went so far as to blame Eve for the whole problem.

It is good to see in the story of faith, told with Abram as the central human character, that women were seen as valuable. Okay, it is a vain stretch because it was just because of her beauty that Abram in that moment saw her as a valuable person. He bartered her to merely save his life. But, God saw the foolishness of Abram and his ill-gotten plan which allowed Abram to say “She is not my wife.” The curse of sickness came upon pharaoh and his household because of the lie told by Abram. Sarai was given back to Abram and they were sent away. God’s promise of prosperity and security and eternity cannot be ‘man-handled.’ God’s promise comes to those who seek to be faithful to the call and word of God in their lives. This leads me back to calling mighty men to embrace God’s first plan for blessing and life. He created humankind in His image- male and female and He called them to be as one- husband and wife. Their presence in the world as a collaborative and faith-filled team testifies to the purpose of God in the world for the salvation and provision of His people. We are good when we are together as one- man and woman, husband and wife, and good for the glory of God. Woman are not here to be servants of man but to remind us we are all to be servants of God working together to accomplish His purposes in all the earth.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

HIS WORD for Today:

2 Chronicles 7.14

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land!”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Have you ever felt as if your life is filled with ups and downs? Usually when someone expresses that reality in their lives it is not seen as a positive. Most of us want a life of peace and balance. We do not want to feel like we are simply being tossed back and forth, one step forward and two steps back. But, if you watch the rhythm of God’s declaration you will notice that there is a truth to “what goes up must come down.” God’s mighty men go down on their knees and lift up their eyes. They look away from their wicked ways and look for God’s face. God in Heaven above will send down forgiveness and lift up the spirits of the mighty men which had been downcast. If truth be told, God’s mighty men actually find their peace in a spiritual life of such ups and downs. It mirrors God’s plan of salvation which Paul proposed writing “He who ascended is also the One who descended into the lower regions; so that the One who descended also then ascended to the heights of Heaven.” (Ephesians 4.9-10) He is speaking, of course, of Christ who left His place at the right hand of God to descend to earth and dwell among God’s people to show them the reality of righteousness and the possibility of gaining the place of righteousness in the world. He was lifted up on a cross as a sacrifice for our sins and in death descended into the prison of Hell to preach to the captives there that they, too, could be lifted up to join Him in paradise if they would be believe. We, too, are lifted up as we believe in Jesus as Lord. So you see, mighty men, our lives are a journey of necessary ups and downs. We must walk humbly in order to lift up the burdens of others to God who will send down His Holy Spirit to give the blessing of wisdom and healing. Take heart, when we are up we are up and when we are down it is merely the foreshadowing of being up again by the grace of God.

To the Hebrews, and all agrarian societies, “land” means everything. It is power, provision, livelihood, legacy and future. As I continue to read and pray this passage of scripture, I cannot help but think of the prayer of Jabez. In his prayer, he said, “Oh, that You would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let Your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.” (1 Chronicles 4.10) Territory meant his sphere of influence. It was the land he owned, the life built out of and on that land, and the people he served and was served by. I have been praying these prayers quite often of late because my spheres of influence have been shaky. I have allowed despair, confusion, helplessness, frustration and illness (known and discovered) to render me less effective in my work and in my home. It is a sad confession I make; safeguarded in part here because someone would have to read this to know this. But, I pray that if there is someone who needs this confession they will see it and know that God does have a solution which is presented in God’s declaration for His people. God provides healing to our land, our territory, our spheres of influence. We have to humble ourselves to receive it. Being humbled before others, especially the unrighteous is scary business and in the short term may be painful and costly. I face that reality now. I am left with the only option that is promised to make a difference. I have to be humble. I have to be honest with myself, my family and my colleagues. Most of all I have to be honest with God- not at the expense of others for the sake of doing what is right and good before the Lord.

Mighty men, the truth exists for us in this very point- until we humble ourselves before God we will struggle greatly and bring struggle to others. Jabez knew this and included in his prayer “let Your hand be upon me so that I can be protected and healed.” Other translations, interpretations, offer a bit of a different slant but an important one which is “that I might not cause pain.” We certainly don’t want to hurt, but as mighty men of God we certainly do not want to hurt others. And that is the truth.

It may be one of the most difficult things to do in life but also one of the most necessary: be humble. Humility is not the same as humiliation. Humiliation is what people do to others when they do not feel good about themselves. They make others feel small by telling them how bad they are, they condemn them and try to destroy their worth and value with accusations with words and actions. They do this to make themselves look big because in their mind big is a sign of power, authority, value and prominence. It is an illusion, however, and a lie. Destroying others to make one’s self look more important is sinful. But, humility is really about our relationship with God. It is about recognizing that God is greater than we are. He is all authority and value and worth. It is because He is love. Humility is recognizing our rightful place in the presence of God. God does not want to humiliate us. In fact, God wants to lift us up and help us be fulfilled. He wants us to be all that we can be. Humility is the admission of a wise person which says I cannot be all I am supposed to be on my own. I need help and my help, the real help I need, comes from the Lord.

Interesting, is it not, that God, for our sake as sinners, humbled Himself by sending His only begotten Son, Jesus, to be the Christ for us. The Christ, Messiah, is the person who is the supreme leader who will save His people from evil- sin and death (eternal death or life forever without God.) His Son humbled Himself by taking on human form and became willing to die for our sins so that we might be free to become who we were meant to be- sons and daughters of the Most High God. He was the victim of others’ attempts at humiliation by His arrest, His trial, His mocking, His beating and His crucifixion. But, on the cross He asked God to forgive even them because they did not know what they were really doing. They made it possible for Him to become the true sacrificial Lamb of God. In His innocence He purchased our freedom from the ravages of sin and eternal death. All we have to do is humble ourselves and admit that the life we truly want we cannot truly have unless we give ourselves to God in heart, mind, body and soul.

It isn’t always easy to be humble. There are times when we are proud of doing good and helping others. But, when the feeling of pride becomes the goal then we have lost our humility; our rightful understanding of where we are in the line with God. Instead, we are to be humble, living with gratitude and servitude, before God and one another. We are to make ourselves valuable to God by becoming valuable to others in loving service and in praising God. If we can keep ourselves in the right position before God then we will be in the position to receive His fullest and richest blessing. It isn’t always easy to be humble but it isn’t impossible; and it is always necessary, if we truly want to have a life worthy of the name of Jesus our Christ whose name is above all other names. It is in His Name that we have been saved. It is in His Name that we will be able to stand before the Judgment Seat of God and found worthy of entering into the fullness of His mercy and grace and heavenly peace.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

With God all things are possible. We must remember the antithesis and keep in mind the realm of righteousness as we do. The alternative expression is “Nothing is impossible for God.” While God can do all things, what He chooses to do is what is righteous, good and appropriate for our situation in relationship to His call in our lives. God keeps His promises to us. We revisited that truth as we looked at the blessing given to Abraham and Sarah in their old age. We can see how God could restore productive lives regardless of our flesh and our timing. Some see this as a miracle but to God is was just another act of grace. Strange, is it not, that with God all things are possible. Strange in that He graciously offers us the possible and makes us possibility makers. we hear that truth in today’s Word. God declared (and “declares” because His Word is truth in any day) that when His people, those called by His name and are calling on His name, humble themselves with prayer and repentance and persistence then they can receive the possibility of forgiveness which is evidenced in the healing of their “land.” Yes, this healing is the making of possibilities for His people and making His people possibility makers.

I am rejoicing in this truth because I need it greatly in my life today. It doesn’t mean I do not need it every day but as we journey through life we are confronted with challenges of all kinds. Great or small, each challenge is an opportunity for success or defeat. If we address the opportunity with the ways of man and do not seek out God, then we have two possibilities- limited success or failure. Now God can turn those possibilities into good but only when we confess the limitation and failure is because we acted with our fleshly understanding instead of seeking God. If we do not then we are left with limited success or failure both of which lead to death and separation from becoming possibility makers. You see, if we address the opportunity of a challenge with the ways of God then we have only one possibility available to us- prosperity. I am not talking about prosperity as becoming the richest, financially, people on earth. That is a possibility for our life if God has determined we are meant to use great wealth for the purposes of His Kingdom on earth. I am talking about prosperity as being satisfied daily with our needs being met and with an abundance of overflow to meet the needs of others as the opportunity of service is revealed.

I have been given a challenge, in truth a number of challenges all at one time. God has blessed me with the plan of becoming a possibility maker- pray, repent, seek God persistently. If I do this then I will be forgiven of my human consequence of acting on my own volition without God as well as being healed in my purpose of serving God with my overflow of abundance of daily bread and provision. I must be determined and remain focused on being made a possibility maker. This means I seize the opportunity to give God every opportunity to demonstrate grace and mercy for me and through and in others. He wants to act for us, in us and through us so that more and more of His people will call upon His Name and be called by it as sons and daughters of the Most High.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

HIS WORD for Today:

Genesis 17.15-18

“God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

With God all things are possible. God called Abram out of the Ur of the Chaldees to go to a land He would show him. Abram had to move out in faith believing in this God who revealed Himself seemingly out of nothing. But, this was not an unknown God. When Abram arrived in the land that was promised leaving behind family in Ur and Haran except for his wife, children and his brother’s family he was introduced to Melchizadek who served this same God as priest and king. God puts people in places so that we are encouraged. It may surprise us as it certainly surprised Abram when God declared that he and his wife would have a son of their own flesh and blood. They had tried to please each other and God by the ways of childbirth acceptable to the people of the land. It was not what God intended. So, God fulfilled His promise to Abraham and Sarah as He had first spoken. It surprised Abraham and Sarah; it was even laughable. But, no matter how impossible or improbable it seems the truth is that with God all things are possible for those who believe.

Mighty men, some of you may be in one of those seemingly impossible situations. You may be doing your best to please and honor God and simultaneously seeking to sate your own desires in doing good as you see fit. I can say this because it is true in my own life. But, if we hold fast to the truth, God will provide what He knows is needed and purposeful in our own lives. We must trust and submit ourselves to following God’s promise for our lives. It may simply be a “go and I will show you” but obedience goes a long way in receiving the promised blessing of a fulfilled and fulfilling life. I know I must trust in that each day and encourage you to do that same. Such trust will example the truth of God’s love and grace for all His children who call upon His name.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

HIS WORD for Today:

Genesis 17.15-18

“God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

The truth is God’s will is perfect for us. As men we hear the call of God in our lives but we do not always trust Him as much as we trust ourselves. We want what God is trying to give us but we have a tendency to make it conditional on our own terms. Abraham and Sarah sought to fulfill God’s promise by giving Abraham a son based on man’s laws and practices. Sarah felt the angst of that decision and sent Hagar into the wilderness. Abraham consented to this decision as much as Adam did with Eve when she decided to disobey God. There were consequences in both decisions but when they were confronted by God, His will was still done. Thank God!

Mighty men, in our lives we make some decisions as well believing we are fulfilling God’s will. Our intention may be good but we cannot usurp God’s plan and think there will be no consequences. Thank God for His mercy and the continuing desire to keep us in His blessing. The good news was that Abraham and Sarah, though thin on patience, still believed they were in the promise of God. God reconciled them in their time of need. God brought healing to their situation. God also ministered to Abraham’s heart for Ishmael and blessed him also. The truth is that we have to trust God in all things; even when we make errors in judgment and step out of our spiritual lane. God can get our lives back on course and set our journey right. We must surrender our hold on the reins and give them to God. He will not lead us astray nor will He forsake us. Trust in Him with all your heart, mind, soul and strength and lean not upon your own understanding.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”

HIS WORD for Today:

Ephesians 1.13-14

“You also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Praise God that the truth of His salvation is for us all. As mighty men of God we are blessed in the truth of God’s love for all of His children. He showed Himself first to the descendants of Adam and Abraham in order to attest to the hope of our salvation. It was not an exclusive call extended only to their blood descendants. They were first chosen in faith before the Law to be witnesses to the presence and desire of God for all creation to live in peace before Him. That message permeates the Old Testament but its practice was skewed by some who only thought God belonged to the Jewish nation.

As mighty men of the New Covenant made in Christ, we are also descendants of faith by the blood of the Lamb who was slain for us. Jesus is the evidence of our salvation. We are saved by grace when we accept Him as our Lord and Savior. We must confess our inability to attain eternal life and embrace a heavenly life on earth without the mercy and power of God. That mercy and power comes to us in the blessing of the Holy Spirit. When we receive Jesus Christ as Lord we receive that blessing as well. The submission of our will to God’s will brings about the fulfillment of God’s hope for our lives. He loves His children and wants them to be blessed beyond measure. He chooses us for a purpose as well. We are to be His witnesses to the unbelieving world so they can see God and know He wants them to be welcomed in His eternal home. He chooses us to be a witness to believers as well so that we stay encouraged in difficult times and do not stray when things are going well. His truth is for us all because His love is for us all if we will receive it, return it and share it with one another.

“Let HIS TRUTH be seen (and heard) in the mighty men of 2015.”
