HIS WORD for Today:

Philippians 4.8

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Professor Harold Hill in the famous play and then movie urged his music students to employ the “think” method. Professor Hill was not a real music teacher but it was one of his identities used to bilk money from prospective customers and then leave town with their money but no intent to complete the sale. Unfortunately, love got in the way and he had to complete the deal. His only resort was to hope that the skills of his students would be awakened if they just believed in their desire to be a band. Their success, and ultimately his, had to come from within. Their minds had to be made up to do what they wanted to do.

Paul urged mighty men to be transformed by the renewal of their thinking (Romans 12.2). Paul knew that you could possess all knowledge and skills but if your thought process was flawed no resource would be significant enough to embrace the state of righteousness. But, if we focus on the righteousness of God and all it has brought into and out of the world then our own belief in God and believing in His belief in us would bear the fruit of righteousness in our lives. Of course, the motivation is love. There has to come a time in our lives when true love must take control of our heart, mind, soul and spirit and lead us in the direction of being the Kingdom of God and not simply be a traveller toward the Kingdom as if it were some distant country. When we transform our thinking it is because we focus on the reality and the expressions of loving one another and God more than ourselves. Doing that opens our eyes, heart and mind to the wonders of God including the wonder of God in us through Jesus Christ our Lord who is Lord and Savior of and over our lives
That is something to think about and consider continually in our pursuit of living more fully as a mighty man of God.

HIS WORD for Today:

Philippians 4.8

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

My prayer, mighty men, and I ask that you share it with me, is that we so pursue righteousness that the definition of what is truly excellent and praiseworthy is not tainted by the world’s desire to be put before God. Without question, there are many good and wonderful things that happen and are done in the world. But, is the truth of God in them? As Paul writes to the mighty men of Corinth concerning the truth of love, he states, “If you do not have true love in your actions, your words, your intent and in your spirit then you can do nothing at all.” Now, he didn’t mean that we were helpless. Of course, we are not helpless. The human spirit is a power to be reckoned with. Why not? The human spirit was created by God in the fashion of His Holy Spirit. But, the Holy Spirit is guided by God’s will. The human spirit is guided by free will. The Holy Spirit has no choice but to trust in God. The human spirit must decide to have no choice but to trust in God. It is through Jesus Christ that we are promised the blessing of the Holy Spirit which can heal and transform the human spirit to be infused with the will of God which is true love instead of being confused by the love of the flesh.

Mighty men, we must decide to accept the gift of the righteousness of God, be the righteousness of God and demonstrate a life that is following the righteousness of God to the letter of love (not the law!) Mighty men of God are the living examples of what is excellent and praiseworthy. We are led by the Word of God- the Bible and Jesus Christ; and the Holy Spirit of God. From them we know the true understanding of what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy. The world can learn from us the truth of all our lives- God loves us and wants for us to enjoy the loving relationship of God and His family for all time.

HIS WORD for Today:

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

For the most part we can see what other people are thinking. There are some real good poker faces in the world but even then you know they are trying to make you believe they are not thinking about nor concerned about what is going on. It is called a bluff. But, God is not bluffing. He is the real deal. His ways are not hidden from us nor is His face any longer a threat to us. He wants us to see Him and behold His glory as in the only begotten Son. This is the truth. The world should be able to see that we are thinking and dwelling on the Word of God. It should be evidenced in our lives before all people. It will bring comfort to some and challenge others. It soothe some and inspire others. It will bring life to some and question the life of others in light of the rubric of God’s love for each of us in Jesus Christ. It is not always easy to be a Christ follower as there are significant challenges. It cause many, and hopefully all, to took a good look at their own lives with introspection and desire the realignment toward working for the goal of walking positively with God as in Jesus Christ.

The truth is we are supposed to think about these things! We are to take time for ourselves in secret and allow our heart, soul, mind and spirit become a true dwelling place for God like the tabernacle in the wilderness, the Ark of the Covenant, the burning bush, the true temple of God, the Mount of Transfiguration and the Upper Room. These are places where God and man truly found themselves as one in the presence of God. How wonderful it would be for others to say as they watch our life and our death “This must have truly been a son or daughter of God.” That means not only should we dwell in secret with prayer and study but that we should continue to dwell with God in the midst of others as we move through life. They should see us thinking about God and contemplating with a sincere focus on the things that are right, good, lovely, praiseworthy, excellent and pure. And if there are other things they see we may be thinking about or things we see in our secret place that are otherwise then we know where we need to work and improve. This comes from changing our focus on self and seeing God at work in us for His good and our own to His glory and the welfare of others.

HIS WORD for Today:

Philippians 4.8

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

The default thinking of every mighty man must be to live in the midst of the “last word.” The last word should always be the first word we remember and thus the best word to guide us in our day. Human nature has a tendency to want to dwell on the distraction words. These are words that rarely bare good news. But, we know the good news, the real good news. In the midst of our trials, tribulations, devastations, insinuations and negative contemplations there is a strong thread of God’s love which can bind them all up and keep them captive. In fact, as all those negatives are bound together and placed in the hands of God, He can shape and mold them into something wonderful and beautiful. Like a lump of coal placed under tremendous pressure becomes a diamond, so does the negative confronting our lives become a positive under the pressure of God’s mercy and grace. They are like the two hands of God working together to complete God’s will in our lives.

Before Christ was in our lives, stress and lies may have been the only thing holding us together. What people do not easily understand is the stress and lies need the energy of more stress and lies in order to maintain their hold on us. The desire to maintain the grasp on our negative self under the illusion that we can make it better invites other negative factors in to sustain us in that false state of being. But, turning it over to God- the whole of who we are, and putting our self into His hands can make of us a gem of heaven. The mighty man of God is one of those gems, each one of them. We may still be in a raw state but under the eye of the Master craftsman the true value and worth of who we are is refined and revealed. Think of the city on a hill which Jesus teaches about that cannot be hidden. It is a shining jewel! Of course, the first illustration of that would have been the Holy Temple in Jerusalem that was illuminated at night to be visible for miles around and gleamed in the light of day to be equally apparent. No wonder the enemy wanted to bring it down. But, the defeat of the Temple came more from within than from with out. When it lost its sense of true reality coming from God, then there was no strength in the temple nor in its people.

Paul writes to the mighty men of Philippi to finally and ultimately think upon the wonders of God in all of its manifestations. These pull the hands of God, mercy and grace, closer around us to continue to transform us, in whatever situation we may find ourselves in, into the glory of God. The trial is not meant to condemn the mighty man of God but to refine him and prove our decision to believe and call upon God is the truth! Find the good in the midst of whatever and wherever you are and think up it finally, at last, and see what God can do!

HIS WORD for Today:

Philippians 4.8

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Mary Poppins sang “A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down.” I have no doubt that we can come to a similar conclusion when we speak the truth of God into every situation of our lives and the lives of those who are given to us for their care and welfare. In the letter to the mighty men of Ephesus it reminds them to “speak the truth in love.” Sometimes we are mighty good about speaking the truth. What we are saying is not wrong but often it would take a mightier effort to hear than was needed to speak it. Why would that be true? If we do not speak in love demonstrating our care for others and concern for their welfare then whatever we say may fall on fairly, if not completely, deaf ears. It does not mean they cannot hear us. It does mean they man not want to hear us. The filter of protective listening shuts out messages that might bring harm be it by a needed change or the exposing of something shameful long hidden. The method of “getting straight to the heart of the matter” may create more woundedness and separation than healing and inclusion. Spoons full of compliment and appreciation, sympathy and empathy or simply put- words of love (agape) will help open the door to the heart, soul and mind of a person and pave the journey to redemption and reconciliation with soothing calm.

As mighty men of God we must speak firmly but lovingly when we disseminate the truth about God’s desire for each of our lives. He spoke to us in love when He sent His Son, Jesus, into the world. He did not harass, bully or disparage those who needed help. He treated everyone fairly and with an understanding of their heart, mind, soul and spirit. It wasn’t always easy to hear what He said and many turned away. But, when they walked away they always knew that God loved them no matter what. We would be wise to do the same in all our relationships..

HIS WORD for Today:

Philippians 4.8

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Let’s hear the media version of this verse: “Always, listeners, whatever has the hint of truth, whatever is demeaning to those who do not fit worldly standards of acceptable, whatever is impure, whatever is beautiful in appearances only, whatever glitters that is not gold- if anything fit this standard and is worthy of gaining attention so that evil is promoted above good- let’s dwell on these things and create such a negative culture and environment so as to make believers of the broken that there is no hope and weaken those who are marginally strong so that there is no peace.”

All sarcasm aside, and there is positive media in the world albeit still in the minority, it is safe to say that what we allow to come into our heart, mind and spirit becomes the acceptable mindset of our lives. We make our decisions based upon the focus of our vision and it determines our purpose. So, if we focus on the things of the world and pursue them with the passion of life that is innate then we become a part of the world and truth is only what we make it (as it makes us.) Recent studies show that children who are only in the second or third generation of poverty are essentially rewired mentally and emotionally to accept a life of poverty as inevitable. While it may be true in this world it should be a travesty to the body of Christ. Jesus declared this truth in what is called “The Sermon on the Mount,” saying “Seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness and everything else will fall in place in your life.”

As Paul writes to the mighty men of Philippi, he declares the extension of that truth teaching “whatever is above and of God in all of its manifestations- focus on those things and you will be amazed at what can happen not on in your life but in your sphere of influence.” Okay, I paraphrased and expanded on the concept but it is not far from the truth. If we fill our hearts, mind and bodies with the righteousness of God and dwell on the things that are beautiful in every situation then we have no idea what can happen in the midst of it. The very story of creation starts on this principle: In the midst of the darkness a spark of life invoked order in the midst of chaos and life in the midst of lifelessness. Even if there was nothing outside of the Kingdom of God but darkness and chaos, there was God stepping into it and everything changed from that moment on. If God can do that with the expanse of the universe and beyond, then He can certainly do it with each one of our lives. Nothing is too great that God cannot change it and nothing is too small that it will escape God’s attention to it. God is about the details because little things do matter. The truth is that we are not insignificant to God. We are His beloved detail and a vital part of the whole picture of faith, hope and love in this world and beyond.

HIS WORD for Today:

Galatians 6.12-16

“Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised [comply with their perception of the rules]. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

For the true believer, Jesus is their spiritual circumcision. When circumcision was given as a command by God as a sign of their commitment to love and serve God only it started with those who were already grown. It would have been a very painful process and very evident to everyone who was committed to God. It was an act of tremendous sacrifice and transformation. They would never be the same. The blood shed there was symbol of their love for God and for one another. But, Paul was teaching the mighty men of Galatia and throughout Asia Minor that this act of commitment was no longer necessary to be identified as a descendant of true Israel. The true Israel was now those who believed that Jesus was indeed the Christ of God, His only begotten Son, Lord and Savior of the world. His blood was shed for the remission and forgiveness of our sins. He was wounded for our transgressions; an innocent lamb of God for His people. Because of Him we are marked by the cross, the empty tomb and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Because of Him we no longer have to be known by worldly perceptions of what is truth. Rather, we will be known in the world and by the world as those in whom Christ dwells and through whom Christ is made evident. It is by our faith that we shall be known as new creations. We are forever changed in a way that cannot be revoked for we bear the mark of Christ on our lives.

HIS WORD for Today:

Galatians 6.12-16

“Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised [comply with their perception of the rules]. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Bear in mind, mighty men, that even when Jesus was manifested in human form His flesh did not rule His spirit. If He was ruled by the flesh then His desire would have been to conform to the things of this world. Jesus had no desire for letting His the cravings of our flesh in this rule alter His decision to be spirit-led and spirit fed. It is not hard to see how His teachings by word and by example challenged those who heard Him share the Word of God. For Jesus, and for us, we are to be internally eternal. The flesh will not last forever. When we die and are translated into our Heavenly place we will receive our glory body. Its function and appearance is not fully known to us. However, the expectation of knowing Jesus when He appears again leads us to believe that there is something recognizable and familiar. I can relate to this in His appearance to the two He met on the road to Emmaus following His crucifixion and resurrection. They did not recognize Him immediately but in the breaking of bread as part of the celebration of life their eyes were opened fully and they knew it was the Lord. They confessed their was a burning inside of acknowledgment which they embraced after as “we should have known.”

We should know, too, mighty men. The truth is that the Word of God must be alive in us before it can truly be actualized in our external presentation of the gospel and its power to improve our lives. If we are not “feeling” the truth and seeing it at work within our members then are we walking in the truth? And do not confuse the word “feeling” as to mean emotion. It is far more powerful than that and we know how powerful emotions and feelings are in our human lives. I am speaking of our soul. From the Hebrew we know that the soul is the seat of our being. It is more than our heart which feels and our mind which knows. Our soul is the place where spiritual reasoning and truth generation exist. It is where “deep calls unto deep” as the psalmist David described it. So, those who simply want to proved their righteousness by externals must consider more importantly the congruity of the external with the internal. When Jesus comes to us, His desire to to come into our lives. He stands at the door of our lives, whatever entry point that may be of heart, mind, strength or soul, and knocks. He will not call us out when He comes to the door but rather, like Zaccheus, extend the invitation for Him to come in. And like Zaccheus we will find our internal reasoning and feeling challenged and changed and then the truth itself in our lives will be manifested in works of mercy and grace and words of knowledge and wisdom.

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For provision for those whom this latest blast of winter weather will create stressful opportunities so they may be provided with their basic needs fully
* For the end of Boko Haram and their reign of terror and murder of innocent men, women and children
* For the defeat of the terrorist rebels, ISIS, that they will cease their actions to disrupt peace in Iraq and Syria, put aside their warring nature and put on the spirit of the One True God or suffer consequences far more severe than war against the nations of peace and democracy; and a warning to the rest of the world to be on alert if ISIS reaches Baghdad, ancient Babylon; and globally

HIS WORD for Today:

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

As Paul is speaking to the mighty men of Galatia, he pounces upon a truth that is for all time short of heaven. People will do anything to keep from submitting to the truth. Living in the truth is an act of submission. Truth-living is being obedient to doing the right thing for the right reason knowing the cost it could, and usually does, bring to our lives in this world. Truth is about sacrificial living. No one knows this truth better than Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ is not only living proof, He is living truth. He surrendered His place in Heaven at the right hand of God in order to come to earth in human form from birth to death. He wasn’t taking a vacation or having an investigative walk through the Kingdom of humanity. He was coming into this world with the intention of reconciling man and God. He wanted to demonstrate that it was possible for man to be righteous- that is the living proof. But, the living truth is that He could do nothing if He were not reconciled to God and connected to Him in spiritual intimacy. He could not have lived with us and not sin without the Holy Spirit of God ruling in His life. He could not have died for us without the Holy Spirit of God holding His life together when it was literally coming apart. He knew He could not die unless He fully surrender who He was in the flesh and in the Spirit to God. His final words included, “Father, into your Hands I surrender my Spirit. It is finished. It is done.” He breathed His last as a man of duality, the God-man, and was giving new life as the Son of God reborn by God’s mercy, grace and love.

Mighty men, we cannot live the lie of the enemy who wants the world to be convinced they can live dual lives- one part man for men and self, another part for God and others. We must live fully for God and be ready to accept the consequences of living wholly and only for Him in Jesus Christ. Jesus told His disciples they would face hardships, persecutions and even death for His sake. Yet, for being living truth before all men they would be welcomed mightily in the Kingdom and blessed. Remember, mighty men of God, the truth is this world is not all we have. It is a faint image of the Kingdom yet to come. We can barely imagine, if at all, what that world will be like. Jesus wanted it for us so much that He was willing to die a horrible death on the cross so that we might live a better life on earth and a beautiful life with Him forever in the Kingdom of our Father.

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

What makes the truth true and our lives new is one and the same- it is Jesus Christ who took up His cross and walked in obedience and love before God and all God’s children. Taking up His cross led to Golgotha and crucifixion. He had to die so that the promise of life which God had made would be fulfilled. But, He did not only die, He was raised from death by God, His Father, into the newness of life as the first born of the new creation. Without Jesus we would not know the truth and the power of the Christ, the Messiah, to defeat death and usher in the Kingdom of God in eternal life. That truth remains the same even now. There is no other means by which any man can die or, as Paul writes, “be crucified to the world and the world to him.” The cross proved that no matter who you were, the Christ, the Christ-follower or an unbeliever, death was inevitable. It was a fate that awaited and awaits us all. But, for those who walk in Christ and has Christ walking in them, they shall also know resurrection and eternal life. In fact, they have already begun the transformation of being new creations as it is the new rule of the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in Heaven. Mighty men of God, let the truth of Christ be the foundation of your life as you submit yourselves to be built up for the Kingdom of God and His glory.
