YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT, 2014: HOPE

**Note: I wanted to return to today’s reflection and share that this passage of scripture was used in today’s Advent teaching at Antioch Community Church, Waco, Texas. Because we have hope in a good Father who loves us unconditionally, our hope is not void nor empty. This Father, our God, has heard our prayers for salvation and meaning long before we were born. In His Son, Jesus, and through His Holy Spirit promised to us by Jesus as foretold in the Prophets, we can rest from our stress for provision and protection. We are not hopeless because our hope is in God, the Lord of heaven and earth.

Thank you, God, for the affirmation I needed today. I pray it will be speaking to others who felt in their moment, “hopeless.” Amen.

Matthew 7.9-12

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Just a simple question: “What is the best gift we could give to our sons and daughters?” Jesus was speaking of not worrying about our survival needs. He alludes to even poor fathers giving their children good gifts. I don’t know about bad fathers in Jesus’ day, but I know a number of children in the world who don’t even know who their father is. How could they begin to understand about getting any gift from a good father? For many, the government or local charities help put food on the table, clothing on their backs, a roof over their heads and some medicine to assist them in not becoming fatally ill. Does that make Uncle Sam their father? I know that I have not always been as good as I could have been to my children but I do not remember giving them a gift that would bring them harm. Do I wish I could have done more for them? Absolutely. But, the greatest thing I can give them is my prayer for them to know God as their heavenly Father who gives us the best of what we need and Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. If we make that our life’s desire and commit ourselves to keeping the Godhead a reality in their lives then I believe we are successful as being a good father. We can’t ever outdo God who has given us the greatest gift of all- life eternal in His presence through Jesus Christ as Lord. But, we can certainly do all we can to celebrate God in their lives with peace, love and joy.

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 7.9-12

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Consider your relationships, mighty men, each one of them. Place them now alongside how God has demonstrated His relationship with you. How do they measure up? In what you are giving and in what you are receiving- how do they reflect the presence of God. If there is a need for mercy then shouldn’t mercy be extended? If there is a need for compassion then shouldn’t compassion be the aim? If there is a need for charity then shouldn’t charity be demonstrated? For it isn’t just in the measure you give that you should receive. It is in the intention of the giving and receiving that should expose the character and nature of God’s mighty men. Is what we are doing bringing others closer to God? Are we truly guiding them in becoming aware of how to be more like God when we see how God has blessed those He has committed Himself, too? When we act we are supposed to be demonstrating the righteousness and intentionality of God toward man. We are to offer to others what God has offered us as a good father. In essence, the mighty men of God are called to fathers to all of God’s children and walk in the measure of the light of His love.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 7.7-8

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Have you noticed how much easier it is to ask for something that is truly good for you and get it? We have spent a lot of times asking for things for ourselves that please and suit us; things that are not really good for us in the grand scheme of things. We can become driven by the pursuit and desire for these things until we lose focus on what is God’s will for our lives. When Jesus was teaching on this subject, He was actually directing those listening to consider their requests as prayers to God. God provides us with what we need, when we need it and in sufficient resource to keep us from worry and frustration. If we are seeking, asking and coming before the door of God with a humble and sincere heart, He will meet us, answer us and open the door to His treasury out of which our needs are met.

Consider this, mighty men, Jesus also teaches that we are to store up our treasures in Heaven. If our treasures are the good thoughts and deeds we have considered and put into action, then the benefits and blessings they have created for others are matched by God’s joy and grace. They are put into our account on account of His mercy. We do not do these things for such a return because our true benefit is making the lives of others better in leading them to Christ. Assisting them in coming into right relationship with Jesus not only has a joy to it that thrills the soul and makes life worth living, it has a blessing that is multiplied without end. But, if we are selfish in what we do and seek credit for our thoughts and actions, then God who knows all things will see the condition of our heart and know that it cancels out the good that could be done in a greater way. It doesn’t mean others may not benefit from what we do. It does mean that we miss out on the benefit of our treasure in Heaven. I cannot imagine such an empty treasure store signifying our lack of deposit in righteousness into the lives of those whose needs are far greater than our own. So, seek the Lord where He will be found and present yourselves in all humility to let His love so live in you and flow through you into all the world.

It is a day of Thanksgiving. Why shouldn’t we be thankful? We believe that God has and will always provide for us what is needed in our lives. He has made the ultimate sacrifice in order to guarantee that those who trust in Him and acknowledge His Son as Lord and Savior shall have an eternal provision. But, what of those who do not yet know that Jesus is Lord? I especially worry about those who have taken an inventory of what they know of Christ and Christians and have decided Jesus isn’t their kind of Lord! Thanksgiving then loses all of its meaning and opportunity to celebrate authentic living. When the Pilgrims came to the New World they believed they knew all that was necessary to be successful. The New World, however, was nothing like the one they had left. They did not seek help where it could have been found. They did not knock on the doors of opportunity that could have been open to them. They asked God for answers but couldn’t hear the answer they wanted. Their plan for survival failed miserably, almost fatally for the new community. But, they still maintained Jesus Christ as Lord. When it was finally necessary then others asked if they could help, they knocked on the doors and offered opportunity, they sought them ought and found them willing now to be a part of the greater community. Wonder if they had landed in a place where the people were not so friendly? Wonder if it had been a warring tribe? Our Thanksgiving would be far different if at all, to say the least.

Is it so different for us, mighty men? We have come into a land we consider full of opportunity but not all the natives are friendly. We keep God in a box like a genie in a lamp and wonder why we struggle in getting what we wished. True thanksgiving happens when we create the opportunity for others to be thankful in that moment of recognition that Jesus is Lord. It comes from our service to them which is the key to opening their door of opportunity and to assist them in knowing what they truly seek can only be found in Jesus. We have to break away from most of the “I know what I am doing” and ask “What does God want me to do?” We must seek out the lost and share the knowledge we have of how God has made a difference in our lives. We must offer our thankful heart to those who struggle to be thankful for anything in their lives. Let them know that God is there and here and available so that we can all survive and dwell in the New Jerusalem, New Israel, New World with Him forever.

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For the spirit of being truly thankful to rest upon all the people of the world in the recognition of Jesus as only Savior
* For shalom to reign on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and all hostilities cease

ABIDING IN HIS PRESENCE THROUGH PRAYER:

Father, in comparison to what You have done for us we know we have not done all we can do in being thankful. We return thanks to You now because while we are not yet where we are supposed to be our lives are far better than what they might have been without You. We thank You, Lord, in Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 7.6

“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Are we teaching others the sanctity of life? Are we illustrating and demonstrating with our own witness and testimony what is holy and what is good? Have we commited ourselves to the task of not only doing what is right but to teaching what is right and good? It is this that Jesus is alluding to in His teaching. We cannot, as mighty men, continual to treat what is unholy and unacceptable as if it were not. But, we are not without a calling to preach the good news to the poor and set the captive free. We have been reconciled to God by Jesus Christ and given the ministry of reconciliation. We know what to do with bread (communion and fellowship of believers) and with pearls (the resource provided by God to exist in the world daily.) But, if we choose to not give hope to the hopeless, to do what we have always done even when it did not work, then we will ourselves become consumed as did the Prodigal Son. Reach out and demonstrate the wonders of God’s mercy and grace so they can receive Jesus and the blessings of Heaven.

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 7.3-5

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

As we begin to wind down this year and consider our journey of allowing God’s will to be done, doesn’t it make sense that this teaching of Jesus lead us now? The holiday seasons are difficult for many people because of the lengthening of the nights, the pressure of the holidays to please so many people and the reality that life goes on including death bringing to mind painful and sad memories. The problem is that we don’t want to face our own problems but make sure that everyone sees the problems of others. In the season of Thanksgiving and Christmas, the intention should be to focus on how our needs have been met so we can meet the needs of others. Our greatest joy should be to speak of the light of life when darkness wants to swallow hope up. But, if we want God’s will to be done this year in our lives then we must focus on what keeps us from seeing God’s desire most clearly. Removing our own vision stopper not only clears our vision so we can see God’s revelation, it does help us to better see where we can do the most good in the lives of others. God’s will is that we see clearly what He has done for us. We can do this if we confess our own deficiences to God and allow Him to restore our sight.

I do believe these verses are a perfect addendum to the Golden Rule. As mighty men of God, we are called to accept responsibility for our own selves. We dare not measure ourselves against anyone for we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We certainly cannot measure up to God for we cannot strive to reach above what is unreachable. But, thanks be to our brother by faith, our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, we do not need to reach above nor below. Instead we need to reach out to God and His hand matches ours perfectly. So, we confess ourselves before Almighty God and dare not stand in judgment of anyone, nor seek to lift ourselves above others by lowering them with our opinion. God asks us to humble ourselves with an honest opinion of ourselves and accept from God what He is willing to give which is forgiveness of our sins.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 7.1-2

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

The Golden Rule remains “Do to others in the way you want to have it done to you.” We know that many want to believe it is “do to others as it is done to you” but that leads to a conditional life. As mighty men of God we cannot be conditional in our lives. Conditional living creates a duality that is too hard to manage. There is but one God. He is our God and wants us to live always and only for Him. The more we try to live conditional lives the more we expect people to please us in order for us to be good and do good. Instead, we must always seek to be good and do good regardless of what others are doing and doing to us. We serve a mighty God whose purpose is to help us be good and do good even when we have times in our lives that we aren’t as good as we should be. Remember, grace is getting what we do not deserve because God loves us.

* For those who are seeking to put an end to human trafficking that their success would be overwhelming so that the healing may be equally so
* For the violence to stop in Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Turkey, North Korea and the Ukraine and the open roads for peace be made so that healing may begin and peace rules

I guess you could call this teaching of Jesus His countermeasure. We still live in the world of judgments. It seems times have not changed. We are surrounded by people who judge and create the judgment of others. We are surrounded by those who are fearful of judgment. How many times have we even been one of those people? And Jesus teaching on judgment is inclusive. From the petty judgments of prejudice where our opinion is formed by external observations to the condemnation of life and the desire to pass an eternal death sentence, judgment is called into question. Jesus knew the heart of the leadership He was confronting. They had taken legalism from an accountability system that promotes righteous living to a form of separatism that spoke of haves and have nots. And it was a legalism that was forced upon the have nots while exempting the haves.

But, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus was not only addressing the leadership and calling them into accountability. He was speaking to the peoples’ attitude toward them which fostered a prejudice as well. Jesus pointed out that no matter who we are and what we do, we must seek to be obedient to His Father’s will. Spinning out of this is the Golden Rule which determines how we treat others is not based on what they say and do to us but by how we ourselves desire to be treated. We could be reminded “judge others the way you want to be judged.” What would that be? As mighty men of God it is as forgiven, empowered by the hope of restoration, compassionate and the beneficiaries of God’s mercy and grace and love.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 6.32-34

“For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

As Jesus was walking down the road one hot and dusty afternoon, he came upon ten men whose bodies and lives were consumed by leprosy. They were homeless and destitute with only the company of others like them for support. As Jesus drew near they cried out. Jesus hearing their plea healed them and sent them back home. They were to show themselves to the priest who would declare them healed and well, able to return to the homes and their lives. Ten men were healed. Ten men turned in the direction of their homes and began to run to do what Jesus had told them. Ten men; but one stopped and turned back to Jesus. He came and fell at Jesus’ feet and began to worship Him and give thanks for the work which God had done. He was a Samaritan and recognized Jesus as the true priest of his life. Jesus sent him on his way and declared him whole and well.

What are we running away from? What are we running after? Are we pursuing God? Are we in a hurry to show ourselves to the priest of our lives? While we were in sin we were like Samaritans- outside and outcasts. But, when Jesus commands us to show ourselves to the one True High Priest it is for the purpose of healing. Seek first the kingdom of God, the things that make for the kingdom and His righteousness will be yours.
