YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 15.33

“The God of peace be with you all. Amen.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Jesus told His disciples, “Peace I give to you, not as the world gives you but such that I give.” At the end of our days, regardless of their number, each mighty man hopes to rest in peace. Having lived a full life invested with the Spirit of God and investing in the sharing of the gospel of Christ, we want to rest in peace. There is more to do but we have done all we can do as our part given by God. When He declares over us, “Well done, good and faithful servant; enter into your rest” we will know our lives truly had meaning and purpose. This is our true rest. Not that our life has come to an end but that it is able to enjoy its continuation in the glorious presence of God. We who will be able to stand up in the full measure and stature of Christ because we have lived the triune testimony of faith, hope and love can stand before and beside Almighty God and know true life and living as never before. That is, as Paul Harvey would say, “the rest of the story.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 15.29-32

“I know that when I come to you, I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ. I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me. Pray that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea and that my service in Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints there, so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and together with you be refreshed.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

In my interpretation classes, we always were on the alert for the literary devices in use to help highlight important messages to be communicated. Of course, some translations may lend themselves to seeing them more than others and some are created by the translation itself, especially into English. But, as I went back to reread Romans 15 again this morning waiting for the Spirit to say “move” so I could move, my eye was drawn to “I know that when I come to you, I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ.” (verse 29) I love the closure Paul uses to help solidify his hope and his purpose with the mighty men of the Romans community.

Today’s closure is with just the section we have been reviewing. The Spirit matched “I know that when I come to you, the full measure of the blessing of Christ” with “I may come to you with joy and together with you be refreshed.” Holding together the anticipation of “when I come to you” with the result is so powerful. It allows us to draw the connection between “the full measure of the blessing of Christ” with “joy and refreshment.” This is the full measure of our blessing in Christ that we have joy and refreshment. Another way of stating the consequence of coming together is “fellowship and worship.” This is our sabbath rest. It is not that we do nothing all day. Rather it is the call to gather together in fellowship and worship God who in Christ Jesus has provided us with faith, hope and love. In that fellowship and worship there is the celebration of communion. Paul would write to the Corinthians, “whenever you would gather take time to bread bread and celebrate Christ in your midst.” The same would be true for the Romans and all Christians when they come together in the name of the Lord. It is our beginning and our end, the Alpha and the Omega of Christian faith and true expression of who we are in the name of Jesus. We are the body of Christ, His friends and His fellow servants of God. We are one and share the burdens and the joys of life so that we can be refreshed, renewed and restored into the wholeness of life. It was Paul’s hope; it should be ours as well.

HIS WORD for Today:

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

There may be a few other applications of “sabbath rest” not yet revealed to me, but there is one characteristic of rest that is important. Just as mighty men need to maintain an accountability partner to keep their iron strong (iron sharpens iron), so does the refreshment of God which comes in sabbath rest need togetherness. I have heard too many people say “I don’t need church to be believe in God. I can worship God on my own.” I am not going to debate the merit of that belief. What I do want to embrace is that Paul teaches us his hope is that together we will experience refreshment. We are a part of the body of Christ. We are a collection of individuals working together for the goodness of God. We cannot do this on our own. We must work and worship God together so that the burdens and the joys of life are shared. It is in the sincere sharing that true liberation, peace and rest come into being.

In studying this word yesterday and Paul declaring his hope to be able to come to the mighty men in Rome so they may share in joy and refreshment together, God spoke the word “sabbath” to me. I offered three expressions of “sabbath rest” for us to consider yesterday and I want to bring another today.

In Exodus 23.11, God declares that the farmers of Israel should let their fields lie fallow every seventh year. In Leviticus 25, God declares there shall be seven sabbaths of years and the fiftieth year shall be called holy because there would be true freedom and liberty in Israel. In the year of Jubilee, debts were to be forgiven, property returned to its original owner if there had been no redemption price determined for it and slaves were set free upon their choosing. It sounds like another one of God’s excellent plans, however, I do not know how fastidiously the year of Jubilee was pursued or enacted. I do know the modern world is not constructed to survive a year of Jubilee much less one every fifty years.

But, the theory of Jubilee should resonate with God’s mighty men. In Christ, their debt of sin has been cancelled and they are free to remain slaves to Him as the just Master of the house. It is the fruit of the gospel, this life of freedom in Christ. The blessing of forgiveness rising out of God’s mercy and grace in Jesus Christ ought to invigorate the heart, mind and soul of every mighty man. They ought to be refreshed and strengthened in their resolve to return thanks for their freedom by becoming His witnesses in all the earth.

How does “rest” figure into Jubilee? Fairly simple, I would think, is the opportunity to rest from burden of the day of sin in our lives. Our sins are forgiven at the cross. We have the anointing of the blood of the Lamb on the doorways of our heart and mind so that they Spirit of Death passes by us. We are free then to forgive others whether they have sinned against us or others. Without the burdens of sin and death hovering over us there ought to be ease and comfort in our lives. Living with Jesus and for Jesus declares a year of Jubilee in each day of our lives. As Jesus shared with Peter when asked how many times does it take to be truly forgiving “Seven times seven,” so there is that sense of Jubilee in His teaching. As others have translated it to be “seventy times seven” could certainly mean a lifetime of jubilee. Rest assured, Jesus was convinced that forgiveness was the true blessing of rest our souls needed in order to live in spiritual peace and prosperity.

I offered three expressions of “sabbath rest” for us to consider yesterday and I want to bring another today.

In Exodus 23.11, God declares that the farmers of Israel should let their fields lie fallow every seventh year. In other words, they should let their fields get a rest. The poor and the wild beasts could glean from whatever rises up out of the field and in that way others are provided for by the work of God in the field. This also gives the land a time to heal and refresh. Its natural nutrients would not be used up and the crops would be even more abundant in the six years that would follow.

The same is true for our own lives. We need to give them a rest so they have a time to heal and refresh. We may get so caught up in the world and its life-consuming requirements for success and survival that we do not get any rest. Our bodies, minds, hearts and even our spirits can and do grow weary and depleted. Without taking time to rest in God daily, weekly, monthly, even yearly is actually taking our lives into our own hands. How important it is to find time, make time, to relax in God’s word with prayer and praise. How important it is to find a time of sabbatical and be separated from the works and wiles of the world and focus on God and His benefits. God wants our lives to be an unabundant and fertile field of faith, hope and love. If we use ourselves up then there can be a small harvest but God’s desire for our lives is abundance for the glory of His Kingdom and for the prosperity of all His children.

In the explanation of God’s plan for creation, the Holy Spirit included the vital necessity of rest. The technical and spiritual word for rest was, is and always will be sabbath. How refreshing that seventh day of creation must have been. So vital and important is rest to the empowerment of creation and the fulfillment of God’s plan that even God Himself rested from all His labors. Imagine the simple fact- God Almighty, God of all creation, God of Heaven and Earth and Eternity, rested. If you do not believe me, check it out for yourself in Genesis 2.3. Have you stopped to think what God did on His day of rest. He led by example. Are we, as mighty men of God, doing the same; especially when it comes to the sabbath?

Okay, let’s take a quick look at sabbath rest:

1. It was on the seventh day. In the creation remembrance, and continued in the practice of traditional Judaism, a day began at sunset and continued on through the night into the next day and ended at sunset on that day. God started His work when others would have been taking time to sleep. Creflo Dollar preached recently about rest and suggested that God’s best work in our lives comes when we are sleeping, or are “at rest.” In our sleep, at least for most of us, we have surrendered our efforts to stay awake and full those waking hours with all varieties of activities- some of them even qualifying as work. When we surrender ourselves in faith and trust to God (“Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep”) He is able to do far more with us than when we are awake. In our waking hours we tend to have a too firm grasp on the world and our place in it than to put it in God’s Hands so His will can and shall be done. Imagine that God, at the end of the day, surrendered His creation into His faith and trust to do what is was created to do. God modeled His rest strategy. There was no more work to be done in bringing creation to life except to let it live. Oh, there would be far more work to do afterward, but creation was done and life was just beginning.

2. Even in the Ten Commandments we can read the priority of Sabbath rest where it says “Honor the Sabbath and keep it holy.” “Holy” means to set apart for a specific purpose that best serves the Lord. Most people interpret this specific purpose for Sabbath as worship and praise. How easy it is to be refreshed when we are caught up in engaging and empowering worship. Singing praise songs, being prayed over so that the presence of God and His Holy Spirit hovers all around, celebrating the power of truth in His Word to liberate us from the worldly confines of its interpretation of success and failure, to be in the common of other believers and then those moments when others become believers themselves because the reality of God’s living presence cannot be ignored in their own lives is refreshing. When we speak of “keeping it holy,” we should not be talking about structure, form and practice as if it was a matter of legal obligation to come into God’s presence because that would mean sabbath is only about meeting our needs and trying to appease a God so He will please us. No, instead “keeping it holy” is like “keeping it real.” What is real is that we have been served by a God who loves each of us enough to call us His children and to present Himself to us as “Our Father who is in Heaven, hallowed (“keeping it real and keeping it holy: keeping it real holy”) be His Name in all the earth”and we want to revel in that awesome relationship. We are refreshed by the indwelling of His Spirit because we have surrendered our hold on that time and simply allowed Him to move in, around and through us. Awesome!

Let me offer a third look at Sabbath (and I am thinking I need to let God lead me further in this musing to share more with you at another time) which is:

3. In the prayer which Jesus used at the primer for teaching His disciples how to pray, He offered “Give us this day our daily bread.” We quickly imagine the unleavened bread of the Passover as the bread He was speaking about. Perhaps some of you thought of the manna from Heaven which helped to feed the Israelites on their journey from bondage in Egypt to their freedom in the Promised Land of Canaan. And I have no doubt that bread was considered in that day as well as those which followed as they celebrated the Lord’s Supper whenever they gathered together as believers. But, do not too quickly forget that this flatbread, or the bread of haste as it was recognized in the story of deliverance from Egypt, was a symbol of their quick exit. They did not have the time to bake bread enough for the journey which would have included the adding of a leavening agent and allowing the dough to rise before baking it and then letting it rest another time before eating it or storing it so that it would cool and not draw in bacteria to quickly cause the bread to spoil. Yes, rest is important even in this process because it points to allowing time for the dough to rise (and for some breads it must rise more than once) in order for it to be edible after baking. John declared Jesus’ teaching of Himself as being “the bread of life.” At that time, John was witness to the resurrection when the bread of life rose. It was not energized by the leavening of the Pharisees or Scribes as Jesus warned His followers to beware of. No, Jesus was given the leaven of righteousness. When He rose He rose perfectly for our sake and was found worthy of gracing the presence of God. In His resurrection from the resting place of the cross and the tomb, He went first to feed the hungry waiting in death for their own rising. They, too, had been laid to rest and now would rise again. So, too, on the day of Jesus’ return will the dead in Christ rise again with the leaven of righteousness. The fragrance of their liberation will be pleasing to God just as is the aroma of fresh baked bread is to us. We then, as mighty men of God, are supposed to rest so that we can rise up in righteousness and bring joy to the Lord and strength to the body of Christ feeding them all with faith, hope and love.

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

The power of positive thinking was promoted by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. It has its merits regardless of one’s faith stance or life philosophy. Science has proven that even a forced smile releases endorphins into the system which enhance brain function. Thinking positively, believing hopefully and acting faithfully will always have a great impact on the world in which we live. The Apostle Paul knew this as well. His confidence was in the Lord and His calling over Paul’s life. He was well aware of the hardships he had faced and would continue to face even up to and including his death. It is for that reason he would write to the mighty men in Philippi “For me, to live is Christ, to die is gain.” Even as he addressed the believers in Rome whom he longed to visit on his journey to Spain, he was aware of the challenges facing him in Jerusalem. Yet, he believed that none of that would keep him from his appointed rounds. But, he also knew that without a solid foundation and hedge of protection built by prayer for his life and ministry his effects would avail little.

So, too, for our lives in this world, mighty men. We must bind one another up in prayer and encourage one another with faith that God’s will is being done. The purpose of this blogsite is to be a builder of support and encouragement for men called to live in today’s challenging world. I appreciate that prayers for my needs and will continue to pray for those needs which you have spoken and unspoken. We will succeed. We will reach our goal. We will rejoice always in the Lord, again I say- Rejoice!

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 15.26-28

“For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem. They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings. So after I have completed this task and have made sure that they have received this fruit, I will go to Spain and visit you on the way.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

I can’t help but think of noted actor James Garner in “Support Your Local Sheriff” as he continues to assert “I am just on my way to Australia” each time he is asked about being sheriff. We all are on our way to another place. We have destinations in our lives we believe we are called to. Ultimately, of course, we are on our way to Heaven whether we are going there or it is coming here. Paul was on his way to Spain to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in fulfillment of the Great Commission which Christ left with the disciples. He had a goal in mind and was seizing the opportunity to meet it. Of course, as we have already noted, he did not make it to Spain.

But, let us take due notice that the Word of God made it to Spain and further in great part to the evangelistic efforts of Paul who preached across the continents of Europe and Asia. His desire to be obedient to the call of Christ in his life allowed God to establish numerous churches. These churches served as home bases for other missionary efforts and so on until today the gospel is being preached to billions of people. Praise God!

It is good to have goals and expectations. Hold fast, mighty men, to what you perceive is the calling in your life to do for others as it has been done to you. But, along the way sow seeds of peace, prosperity, kindness, joy, humility, love and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Brighten each corner where you find yourself.

So after I have completed this task and have made sure that they have received this fruit, I will go to Spain and visit you on the way.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Without a purpose that serves Jesus and the Church our lives lose direction. There has to be a higher calling and purpose in our lives. Our Spirit craves the fulfillment of this meaning we seek. Along the way, we do have obligations to meet which sometimes become barries and detours in our journey. Paul was no different.

As Saul, his assumed meaning and purpose was to remove the “Christ” infection from Israel. The followers of Christ were seen as an affront and detriment to true Judaism. It was leading people away from their inherited faith into a far different reality. Following his own faith experience and transformation on the Damascus Road, his meaning and purpose changed to become a defender of this new faith reality and its key spokesperson. He helped to established congregations throughout Asia Minor and hoped one day to make it to Spain for the cause of Christ. Along the way, he hoped to sojourn in Rome but not until he had led a delegation of Gentile Christians to Jerusalem to submit an offering to the Church there. While he felt compelled to minister to the ends of the earth, he was committed to providing for the Church in Jerusalem. He never would make it Spain. He journey to Rome took a far different course which included the end of his life. But, he never lost hope nor the vision to preach according to the commissioning of Christ to the disciples before He ascended into Heaven.

As mighty men of God, we must have our goal and purpose to guide us amid our many obligations. Our goal and purpose do define and refine our identities as Christ followers. Our obligations illustrate our commitment to doing what is right and good before God and the entire world. Where are you going to, mighty men, to serve the Lord with gladness and promote the gospel so that it can be heard?

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 15.20

“It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

What ideas, theologies and wandering thoughts need to be challenged and changed in our minds? One of Satan’s tools to divide the Church and believer from believer, especially in families, is to keep “all options available.” As mighty men of God, we need to come together in one voice with one mind by one faith in one Lord. As a teacher I have seen the need to undo some wrong teaching in order to advance a student in their education. Most of the “wrong” learning comes from teachers not offering corrections in the first place. Allowing students to say or do or think that whatever they say is going to be right is wrong. We may have a fear of failure and wouldn’t want anyone to experience being wrong themselves. But, if whatever we do is right then each of us could be so far away from what is needed that we settle for far less and never discover the good and plenty God intends for us.

It takes a great amount of effort to undo wrong thinking. Paul writes of the renewal and transforming of our minds. We can certainly be engaged in the battling the confusion which Satan has sown but the battle actually is the Lord’s. Surrender the battle to the Lord and pursue righteousness in and through your lives so that others can see it is a valuable and viable option.
