YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Psalm 44.3

“It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You loved them.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

How could David had known except by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit directed by God to tell him so. What am I speaking about? The vision of Jesus as Savior. Jesus is seated at the right hand of God. Jesus is the arm of the Lord extended to the world in blessing of all life. David knew because God chose him to know and to share it with his people- the sheep of his hand as king and of his flock as priest. But, David was also prophetic in that he delivered the truth to the people in worship through song. He had committed himself to be a servant of the Lord even before he knew that God has chosen him. It is awesome when a plan comes together.

What is your plan? Have you committed to God to be His servant in the world? Have you decided that all you have in gifts, talents and abilities shall be used for the glory of God and the furtherment of His kingdom here on earth? Have you determined to tell the truth about the Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, and lead others to invite them in His kingdom which knows no end? As a mighty man of God, that is what we are supposed to be doing. We cannot wait for others or believe that the work done by others is sufficient. We must add ours to the mix and live as good as David.

The measure of the success of God’s mighty men is how much they truly believe that God is the source of their victory. As Isaiah prophesied it was not by his own invention he declared truth. It was by the revelation of God that he received what he knew. Matthew, in quoting Isaiah, was no different. It was by faith in God that he was able to grasp the truth “there is no true hope until the Messiah leads justice to victory.” Many may attempt to accomplish the same, and many have tried, but none except the Christ is able to do it. Even as David rehearses the story of Israel’s history, their deliverance from Egypt and their introduction into the Promised Land, he knew that there would have been no victory nor impetus for success unless God was the Lord of it.

It remains true for all of us today, mighty men of God. Unless Jesus is Lord of our lives and God Almighty is seated upon the throne of our lives, then all our efforts are just hopeful rehearsals of what actually must happen. It does not mean we are without capability or possibility. It does mean that only by Jesus Christ can we have life eternal and abundant. Trust in Him alone!

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 12.18-20

“Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on Him, and He will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out, till He leads justice to victory.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Matthew is repeating the words from the Prophet Isaiah and demonstrates once again the historical proof to the people of Israel that Jesus is the Messiah as the prophets foretold. Interestingly, in Isaiah, the verses which follow this declaration include the Gentiles who will also have Jesus as their Messiah. They would only know this truth because of the people of Israel. With the proposal “He will lead justice to victory” speaks of “truth for all people” which is the sign for the true Messiah. All authority in Heaven and on earth is given to Him. Matthew records that assertion in chapter 28 as He commissions His disciples to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations. Embrace the prophetic priority found in these verses. There are things which the Messiah and the messianic community will do. However, He will not do so until “justice is led to victory.” Justice means to bring to people what is right, good and fair. It does not mean equality but equity. In our pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America we declare “with liberty and justice for all.” They are the last words we speak indicating the priority of our purpose as citizens of this country. There are so many things we could and should be doing but to what avail if we are not promoting and securing liberty and justice for all. The Word of God says, “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul?” Again it is about priorities. We must keep them in line: our soul secure in the hand of the Messiah, justice led to victory for all people at the hand of the Messiah and we dwell in God’s house forever because of the Messiah. It means as mighty men of God we are to keep Jesus first and our walk with Him first and foremost in our lives.

I am sure that we all have our images of victory and their associated events- wars, football games and arguments. But, what is true victory but justice and what is justice without hope. As the mighty men of God cling to their one true hope in Jesus Christ they do have victory. It is in their grasp. Without question, the enemy will attempt to wrestled it from our hands and out of our lives. The enemy will send people and challenges into our lives with the intention of proving our faith is a lie, there is no true God and that there is no hope but to be true to him alone.

In the Book of Revelation, John is privileged to see justice roll across the pages of history in the making as the enemy is defeated once and for all. It is not without a fight nor is it without a price. But, for the mighty men of God that price has already been paid by Christ on the cross of Calvary. Paul writes to the mighty men of Corinth, “Death where is your victory; death where is your sting?” He sings the hymn of the new age of the Church between death has been swallowed up in victory that overcomes the world. That victory is justice. The sentence of sin was put on trial with Jesus as the test case. He who was without sin argued that He could survive the weight of all the sins of the world- past, present and future. He won but not without a price. It was the price of brutal torture and hatred which included horrible death, even death on a cross. But, He kept the faith and trusted in God even when He could not see God through the thick veil of sin and death. No matter, God saw Him and us and counted it all as worthy. He raised His Son from sin and the grave and those who would believe in Him as well. Now ours is the victory. We can see what it truly looks like and model ourselves after it. We may never have to enact that perfection in our own lives but if we love one another we would be willing to do so.

Be victors in life, mighty men, and put your hope always in Jesus who will never disappoint.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Luke 11:53-54

“When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, waiting to catch him in something he might say.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

In other words, “more of the same.” The truth is that the Pharisees and teachers of the Law were having a difficult time combating the truth which Jesus taught. He is the Light of the World. He is a spiritual flashlight so powerful that the darkness of heart, mind, soul and principality cannot consume it. Those who ignored and opposed the truth were being illuminated and condemning themselves. They really had little argument but to submit to the truth. What they hoped to do was to catch Jesus in a lie. But, there were none. And, truth be told, He was sent to the cross for telling the truth. He was the Son of God and forgiveness of sins which only the Father in Heaven can give was being given through His Son, Jesus the Christ. Those who stood against Jesus merely had to convince others that even that was a lie. They did not do so by the Word of God which convicted them but by their own opinion. Even Rome saw the fallacy of their accusations but they were so corruptable that they allowed themselves to be manipulated to enforce the lie even when they could see only truth. This is how Satan works. Satan perverts the truth and then weaves a fine garment into which the strands of half-truths and lies were carefully placed. But, what a difference the holy garment is that clothes the children of God! It is pure and white woven with faith, hope and love and trimmed in righteousness. It will not be soiled because it is blessed by the mercy and glory of God.

Mighty men of God do not be like those who have denied the truth because believing becomes inconvenient. Start for the Kingdom of God and against the lies of the enemy whose purpose is to win a losing battle against God. Stand with the army of faith, hope and love and let righteousness be your guard all around.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Luke 11:52

“Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Proverbs states “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Wisdom is different from knowledge but their root lies in the same place which is “the fear of the Lord.” Can you imagine what must have gone through the heart and mind of the experts in the law when they heard Jesus essentially say “you have no fear of the Lord and you make a mockery of those who do”? It is a severe accusation and one that must be taken seriously. Remember that “fear” is not the same as being afraid. “Fear” means respect based on knowing the full extent of what is being considered. In this case, we are talking about God. God is the beginning and the end of all life. In Him exists the power and authority to give and to take life. Disrespecting God leads to a denial of all the benefits and blessings He desires to give to His mighty men (and women and children). Disrespecting God means to place any other thing on equal status with God reducing Him to a level of idolatry and impotent to effect any change, good or bad, in life.

Mighty men of God know that if there is no God there is no hope for the future. Fear God, respect Him and know the beginning and the fruition of wisdom and all its benefits.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Luke 11:45-46

“Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them. So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’ Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Jesus is hailed as Prophet, Priest and King. As a prophet, He declares the truth of God in the current day where the actions of the people will have future consequences. The prophet is not so much predicting the future but spiritually problem solving with the intention of convincing the people to repent and choose another course of action and living. Of course, Jesus knows the future of humanity because His own blood would be shed for them. As He is so will those who believe in Him be as well. As a priest, He conducts the service of worship to lead the people into the paths of righteousness. Before the Law there was only one’s relationship with God. The relationship is best expressed and experienced in the act of worship with prayer, praise, hymns (and as Jesus would model) table fellowship. Jesus Himself would be the priest’s sacrifice lifted up before God for the forgiveness of sins and the salvation of the nation of God’s people. In this way, it was not the temple leadership nor the Romans who crucified Jesus, He offered Himself to God on our behalf and they were merely the instruments of this spiritual peace. As a king, He has the authority and dispensation of the rules and expectations of His followers. He reveals to them and us the truth concerning life and the course of action we each should take in our service to the King, King of Kings and indeed the Lord God Almighty of Heaven and Earth. Jesus invokes the full presence of His power which was given to Him by God. What the Scribes, Pharisees and Saduccees feared the most in Jesus was His call as Prophet. Jesus saw this in them and counted Himself, and His disciples after Him, as those among the number who would die for the sake of truth telling.

What does that say about Jesus’ accusers? Does it not mean that those who deny the divinity, humanity and truth of Jesus Christ are those who perpetrate lies in order to deceive the people and secure their position of power and authority over them? To what end? The end, of course. There would be nothing at the end of their lives to be counted as a redeeming factor. They may have been kind to others, especially those like themselves, and they may have contributed as necessary to the needs of the poor. But, their desire to preserve themselves and establish a hopeful legacy for their progeny in flesh and practice would never meet the expectations which God had for them in His calling. They would succumb to the history established before them by their own forefathers who built tombs and then filled them with the bodies of their own prophets. Jesus knew His fate would be the same in this world because He, too, was a prophet sent to stand before them. His fate, as is the fate for all Christ followers, is far different in the Kingdom of God because there a place of life there which is eternal. We shall dwell in a house not built by human hands eternal in the Heavens. It is not a tomb but a monument of righteousness whose glory is the Lord’s.

HIS WORD for Today:

Luke 11:45-46

“One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.” Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

I wonder if this teaching did not get further defined in the parable of the Good Samaritan. Who will help when no one else will help? You would think that family would help and be the first ones to respond to the need. Of course, I know of stories where family issues were covered up, hidden or ignored because of the possible stigma. Then maybe a neighbor or that person who may see you most, perhaps at work. But, fear for letting personal and profession become intertwined may dissuade someone from helping. Who wants to lose their job or be accused of violating confidentiality? Maybe it would be your church family who sits next to you in worship and hears your sighs and sees your tears. But, they are not confident to reach out and touch you with prayer because the cost of getting involved may be more than they believed they could handle. If not you then who, right?

Listen to the voice of the Scribes or Saduccees who responded to Jesus’ woeful proclamation. “Hey, when you are talking about them you are talking about us!” Jesus nodded and shared a woe with them noticing they were good at telling people you should be better but failed miserably when it came to helping them in real time. “Take care of your own business” may sound like good advice to some but Jesus reminds us we are to be about our “Father’s business.” His business is about getting involved without considering the cost. Jesus has paid the price for our efforts and set us free to follow the conscience of God. God has supplied us with all we will need to accomplish the ministry of reconciliation of body, mind, soul and spirit- emotionally, psychologically, physically, mentally and spiritually. We don’t need to consider the cost of helping others because we are bankrolled by the Almighty God of Heaven and earth. Our business is to get involved in the lives of others and work side by side with them for as long as is needed.

Mighty men, do you want to be those who talk about doing good or those do good and let theirs actions speak for them?

HIS WORD for Today:

Luke 11:45-46

“One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.” Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

We must give thanks to God who has made it possible for us to be the beneficiaries of grace instead of the imprisoned by the Law. The Law is not the villain in the story of humanity. Laws are the guidelines and guideposts to help focus our attention on the goal we seek to attain. But, sadly, the Law defines a level of perfection we can never achieve. In the Law, we can never say “I am there!” Do not forget, mighty men, the even Jesus was condemned and crucified according to the Law. It doesn’t matter whether it was the flawed interpretation and the lack of fatih “law” which the Scribes and Pharisees tauted or the righteousness of God “law” which demanded a sacrifice for the sake of righteousness. It was still the Law that brought Jesus to the cross, hung Him there till death and buried Him in the tomb to be raised again on the third day so that we could receive by grace what the Law could not give us.

And who should have known this better than anyone else except for our Triune God but the Scribes. They were the experts in the Law. They had committed themselves to the study and the teaching of the Law. But, they allowed their office to become the justification and glorification of their lives. Their office and their understanding of the Law should have been humbled instead. It should have pointed out the true purpose of the Law which was to illumine Christ, the Messiah, who alone could and would fulfill the demands of the Law. It is Christ who knew no sin and in His innocence became the holy Lamb of God led to slaughter to die for us so that we who know sin could receive what we do not deserve and could never earn which is eternal life in the glorious presence of God.

And, mighty men of God, we do not do this for ourselves but because we abide in Christ and He in us, we commit ourselves to the spreading of the gospel of grace into all the world so that every man, woman and child can hear. And our hope is not that they would hear but that they would accept and we would mentor them in the paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake.

But, we thank You for what You have revealed in us through Jesus Christ that declares we are Your beloved. We will live today in love and grace and share this gospel good news with others so they can live, too, in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Luke 11:44

“Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

When God imagined humanity it was with a purpose and a positive effect. To have dominion over the earth meant to be a proper steward of all its resources and to sustain them into the distant future. Can you imagine throwing a stone into a pond and it have no rippling effect? This is, I believe, what Jesus meant when He addressed the Pharisees as unmarked graves. They were living lives that would have no lasting impact on the world. No one would remember them for the legacy they left except perhaps the lack of one. They wouldn’t even be unknown; they would be forgotten as if they had never existed. This is not what God intended for His mighty men. They should be honored for the life they gave and are giving to the future of the human race. They should be remembered for the ministry of the gospel and how the name of God was glorified. They should be remembered in our lives as they had determined we should be remembered in ours. What should be left behind is a marker that hope existed for the future.

But, those who do not live for God and only for themselves will fade from the pages of history. Our collective memory of them will not be sufficient to draw them from age to age and definitely not into eternity. They will wither and fade as the flowers of Spring in the heat of Summer. They will return to the dust of the earth and rise no more. It is a sad commentary of living a life bound by the law whose consequence is eternal death. Instead let us live by grace and the mercy of God and dwell with Him forever in His House which has room enough for us all. Let us live not as those reduced to gravesites but those who live in each succeeding generation of Christ followers and as that great cloud of witnesses which brings hope and nurture to their future by pointing to God and giving thanks.
