YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 7.24

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Data shows that the great majority of lottery winners are declaring bankruptcy because they did not know how to handle the money they had much less the money they came into. In fact, their financial condition was worse in over fifty percent of the cases than before their winning the lottery. It makes sense that having lots of money, or of anything else, doesn’t mean you automatically become a good steward of your resources. The proverb “a fool and his money are soon parted” does come to mind. We know the scriptural admonition which says “the love of money is the root of evil.” That makes sense to the mighty men of God because we are not supposed to love anyone or anything else more than God. Nothing else should be taking first place in our lives. How someone handles their money can be a fairly accurate indicator of how they conduct their lives. And while that is not always true, it bears great consideration as we settle in to pray asking God to provide for our daily needs and to deliver us from temptation.

I am reminded of the story of a man who was a faithful tither. It was not difficult for him to tithe because his income was not great. But, as he was faithful with a little in his job, he was blessed with one promotion and then another. Each promotion included a raise in his salary. Finally, his salary was quite large and the commitment to give of his tenth to the church became a challenge. It wasn’t that he couldn’t give a tenth but in his mind that sum of money seemed quite large. It overwhelmed him. So, he went to his pastor, explained the situation and asked for prayer. The pastor nodded in agreement and began to pray, “Father, we thank you for all your blessings; especially the blessing of a firm foundation on which to build our lives against the storm of doubt and despair. We know there are times when the rock of our faith feels too small for us to stand on. It is not the rock that shrunk but our egos which swelled. Please help this dear brother in faith by reducing his income back to a more managable amount where he can again serve you with gladness and not worry.” The pastor looked up and the man’s eyes were as big as saucers. He said, “Do you realize what you are asking me?” The pastor nodded again saying, “Either you must decrease so He can increase in the midst of your prosperity or your prosperity must.”

Beware, mighty man of God that the rock you build your house on isn’t too small because you have gotten too big for it.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 7.15-16

“”Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

How do you know if the one speaking to you of God is a false prophet or not? It is whether they are speaking in order to gain an advantage for themselves or not. The records of kings, prophets and priests in the Old Testament are clear on this point. The temptation is to believe in and follow the one who promises advantage and possibility for you while in time they begin to compromise that relationship and seek more for themselves. The teaching concerning “you will know them by their fruit” is a testimony to the next generation which follows them. It could mean their children, their administration or their next great plan. In ancient Israel, the mighty men were left to die at the hands of those nations which entered into an alliance with Israel through its kings. They promised safety and prosperity but stripped Israel of its resources- both human and material. Those nations feared the power potential they had seen or heard of when this people walked with God. They knew if they could turn their eye so they did not focus on God then they were susceptible to demise. And it happened many times leading to the destruction of Jerusalem and the scattering as well as imprisoning of its population.

As mighty men of God, we must keep our eyes on Jesus. He alone is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is the true Prophet, Priest and King of New Jerusalem, New Israel and the whole Kingdom of God. All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Him. He desires to share what He has with those who will forsake the call of the world and its “easy” answers and take up the cross to follow Him. His way may not be easy but the burden is bearable because Christ shares it with us. He did not stay in a heavenly palace. Instead, He surrendered His all to come to earth for our sake. And we know that He is the true prophet because of the fruit of His life and ministry continues to be good even to this day. He is a hearty vine and we ought to be grafted into it so that the Spirit which flows through Him will surge in us as well. We will know His goodness by becoming the fruit of His vine, His people and the sheep of His pasture.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 7.13-14

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it!”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Temptation says “Go ahead, everyone is doing it.” It really takes little effort to do what everyone else is doing; that’s why everyone else is doing it. How many times have you considered “going along to get along”? This is why Jesus taught “wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction.” The sad truth is that many will walk that way instead of THEE Way, Truth and Life. The rich young ruler discovered the rigor of that way which leads to true life when Jesus informed him he needed to sell all that he had, give it to the poor and follow Him. There were those who followed along with the disciples who also walked away when they learned of the rigors of the Christian life. No one said it was easy. But, Jesus said it was not impossible. In truth, “all things are possible for those whose trust is in the Lord.”

It is the desire of every mighty man that each person become a follower of Jesus Christ. We are commissioned along with the first disciples to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations. We are called to a ministry of reconciliation. We must put aside temptation to only call a select few of those we want to share heaven with. We cannot limit the appeal to God’s mercy and grace. It is not for us to choose who will accept the call of Christ in their lives and who will not. Our choice is to proclaim the living truth of the gospel and its power to make each person who accepts Him as the Lord and Savior new. It is not a temptation to follow Christ. It is a calling to a life changing and value-affirming means of living. Do not live by the axiom “go along to get along.” Instead, embrace the faith commitment “go with Jesus and get a long life with the Father who loves His children on earth and in Heaven.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For peace between nations and the end of the abuse and killing of children between Israel and Palestine/Hamas; and in India

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 7.12

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets!”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

We certainly recognize the Golden Rule. Interesting, isn’t it, that the Golden Rule becomes a part of our teaching on prayer. Yes, we are blending the recorded teachings of Matthew and Luke in order to gain the larger picture of God’s will for our prayer lives. We must see by now how prayer is that effective tool against temptation- the temptation for settling for less than what is best. What is best? God’s love is best. Apart from God’s love there is very little to enjoy that brings the peace of eternity into our lives. My attention was drawn to this verse as I compared the gospel writings we have covered. When it comes to the giving of gifts and deciding what is best to give, we are urged to follow our Heavenly Father’s lead. Give with the recognition of what kind of gifts you would desire to receive. It is not about giving so that you will receive but giving because you have received.

What have your received? You have received the life of Christ. Upon your profession of faith, His Spirit comes to dwell in you. That Spirit will lead and protect you throughout your earthly life and be the key that guides your steps into the fullness of God’s Kingdom. But, it is more than just the gift giving and receiving that we must consider as we pray for God to lead us from and out of temptation. Our purpose is to live a life that sums up all the Law and the Prophets. You know what that is, right? We have come full circle in our understanding of God’s will. It’s foundation and full expression is love- true love; God’s love. When Jesus taught the leaders of the Temple on the greatest commandments, He said, that loving God and loving the neighbor as we ourselves are loved sums up all the Law and the Prophets. This was and is the purpose of the Law (the rules of righteousness) and the Prophets (the reminders of righteousness). They are not for our condemnation but for our instruction. If we abide in the realm and practice of God’s love then we are secure from the enemy who wants to tempt us and confuse our priorities.

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For those who are seeking to put an end to human trafficking that their success would be overwhelming so that the healing may be equally so
* For the violence to stop in Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Turkey, North Korea and the Ukraine and the open roads for peace be made so that healing may begin and peace rules

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Luke 11.11-13

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

You have seen the commercial of the father who is getting ready to enjoy a boys night out with his sons. He says it is a great night. One son asks why it was great for him and the father answers “Because we are going to watch your favorite movie.” The next son asks and the father replies “Because we ordered that special thing you like from the pizza place.” The third son asks “Why is it great for you” and the father replies about the advantages he gets on his cash back card. Only when seeing the looks on his sons faces does he add “And I get to spend the evening with you.” We must be careful to avoid the temptation of gift giving as a matter of convenience in purpose instead of in confidence of true love.

Jesus taught that if we as fathers who are still struggling in our worldly self can give gifts that are not harmful but at least serviceable, then imagine what the level of gift giving is from our heavenly Father who is bound by the righteousness of love for all His children. But, notice it isn’t just any gift that our heavenly Father gives us but the Holy Spirit. I hope you see that Jesus was talking about our spiritual lives. In the world it is too simply to substitute success and prosperity in the world as a sign of blessing in the kingdom. By the same token, when people are sick and struggling in the world, it is too easy to declare that God must be angry with them and is punishing them or they are bad and the blessing is withheld from them. I would add that the temptation about judgment on the spiritual status of others also falls on how we see ourselves.

We ask for God to provide for our needs; even praying for daily bread and continued forgiveness for our continued failure to hit the mark of righteousness. But, in our prayer do we persist in asking for the anointing of the Holy Spirit and its indwelling in our heart, mind, soul and spirit? Do we fall short in seeking what can and will truly benefit our lives (the fellowship of those beloved by God) by settling for what meets our perception of worldly success (our “cash back” card or “money in the bank.”) When Jesus was ministering to His disciples in the Upper Room before His arrest, He prayed they would be ready to receive the ultimate gift He wanted to share with them. He plead for His Heavenly Father to be a part of that preparation and deliverance; being one with them as He was one with Him. He wanted them to receive the Holy Spirit, the Comforter and Guide they would need for their own ministry which He was setting in motion by His submission to the cross.

Now, remember, this does not mean we do not share good and practical gifts (maybe some are not so practical) with our children and to those who have been given to us for care. Rather, it reminds us as mighty men of God to plead for God to given them the blessing of His Holy Spirit so their lives will have true life, hope, peace and prosperity as they were meant to be. Settle for nothing less than the very best. Avoid the temptation to substitute our understanding of love for God’s knowledge of true love.

Are you tempted by spite? Have you allowed yourself to be so motivated about another’s thoughtlessness that you wanted to send a message of displeasure by giving a gift (an object or a word) that on the surface appears to be a good thing but has a disaffecting undertow? Surely you are not shaking your head “no,” trying to block out the thought you had when the driver behind you sped up to pass you and then exit immediately in front of you. Yes, the popular excuse offered is “JK,” just kidding. But, our Lord said we are easily convicted by our thoughts. You can see this kind of thinking in the teaching of Jesus revealed to us today.

A child asks for a fish and was given a moray eel. Or how about the hungry child who asked for an egg and was given a scorpion which when curled up looked like an egg. Surprise! JK! Really? And then we wonder why so many of those who are God’s children have had such a difficult time believing in a Father God. Hmmmm. And by the same token, those who would dare even think about doing such things would appalled at receiving the same kind of gift given as that proverbial practical joke. Don’t you see why Jesus said, “The measure you give is the measure you will receive.” Or, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” Truth may be that such people really don’t love themselves. To love one’s self may be a risk of disappoint too great to undertake because loving others has been so disappointing or hurtful. They are caught in that vicious cycle of doubt and despair. “Jane, stop this thing. I want to get off!”

But, we have an awesome Father God. Generally, earthly fathers want to give the best gifts they can. There may be times when they are tempted otherwise because they still battle with surrendering to their emotional disability. But, most fathers want what is best for their children; at least better than they had it themselves. And if we, those fathers tainted by sin because we live in a sinful world, can give good gifts even when we may not want to, imagine what our Father who is free from sin will give us. He gave us Jesus. He gave us life through His Son. He gave us hope, daily bread, forgiveness and a eternal home. And remember, just as we must refuse the temptation to believe we are not worthy, we must accept these good gifts for ourselves and share them with others. It may actually be the sharing of that good gift, even when we are tempted not to, that will be the act of God that will change their lives forever.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Luke 11.8-10

“I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

As mighty men of God be convinced that you are worthy. It doesn’t matter what the world may say about you. No volume of praises can match the worth and value you are. You are more precious than silver and gold. You are so valuable that God sent His own Son in the world in which you live to tell you personally “Your father loves you beyond all measure.” Jesus believed in that message so much, He asked the Father to release you into His care. You belong to Him. He gave His life protecting you from evil so that you can enjoy God’s presence forever. His put His life on you by His blood and in You by His Spirit. You are exceeding the ability to imagine your own worth because it has been invested with God’s Son. How can you understand beyond great? It isn’t like the climbs in the Tour de France which are measured by categories 4, 3, 2, 1 and Beyond Category. Even Beyond Category (HC) can still be ridden and conquered. Even if you cannot ride a bicycle to the top of Mount Everest, it can still be climbed. If it were the image of your value and worth, it would still pale in comparison to the value you are to God and therefore to the world (even if the world does not know it nor recognize it.) Truth is that the only mountain that can depict the value you are is Mount Calvary on which Jesus was crucified. He died there as no other had ever died. He died in innocence so that everyone else could have the opportunity to be who they were meant to be- the free son or daughter of the Most High and Mighty God.

This means, as scripture reveals, there can be no condemnation of you either. There is no devaluation of you that is the truth either. Satan may sow the lies of worthlessness into you and your sphere of influence. But the lies are like weeds that grow around you and try to block you from the vision of those who are looking for you. But, the weed is not you. It may desire to choke the life out of you in its jealousy and convoluted thinking by gathering its weedy friends to join with it. But, that has less to do with your value and more to do with its desire to be valuable. In the end, you will survive and the weeds will be plucked up and thrown into the fire. You will be harvested into your Heavenly Father’s storehouse to live forever.

Why am I bringing this to your attention? First, you need to hear this good news. We all need to be reminded of our true value and worth. There are many weeds in the world; sometimes it seems far too many. But, the presence of God through Jesus Christ in you is greater. And Jesus taught, “Mighty things you have seen but I tell you that greater things you will do than have been done.” Yes, in our prayer, as Luke recorded it, we must know what temptations we are to avoid. We visited Matthew’s list of Jesus’ description. Now take into mind and your devotional meditation that you must avoid the temptation of devaluation. You are good enough! You are good enough because Christ is in you. Do not think you are unworthy to approach the throne of God to ask for what you believe is truly needed in your life. When you come to the throne, you do so as God’s worthy and valuable son. Add to that the encouragement you receive as your glance of momentary question causes your eye to turn to the left to meet with Jesus’ smile and wink. Step forward and seek what God has in store for you. Knock of the door of His storehouse and it will be opened to you. It simply takes asking for what is yours already and believing in the one who believes in you; Jesus Christ, your brother in faith, hope and love. Do not succumb to the temptation that God is an unjust Father and you are an unworthy son. God is just and you are worthy.

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 6.33,34

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

As long as we must consider the presence of temptation in the world, and we must, we have to consider one of its root causes. Worry is a cause of temptation or at least the giving in to temptation. I have no doubt that temptation came into Jesus’ life. We know that Satan tempted Him in the wilderness shortly after His decision to take up the paschal lamb ministry and entered into the Jordan to be baptized by His cousin John. He was tempted three times with food, death and power. Because of that, Jesus could speak from experience as He taught His followers how to pray. It was because Jesus did not worry that He was never truly tempted. He didn’t consider it as a reality, or at least not enough that He would change His thinking about God. Each time Satan put before Him a temptation, Jesus responded with scripture. It was His true food and He would feast on it. It was life for Him and it lived in Him mightily. It was power for Him and it fueled His ability to hold on to the love of God through every day and every trial. He did not worry about what He needed because He sought first the things of the Kingdom- loving God and one another. Believing in God never failed Him. He had all He needed whenever He needed it as He needed it. His trust in God caused temptation and Satan to flee.

So, mighty men, when you are confronted with the temptation to sin, turn back into the Word of God which you are. It will provide what is needed in such sufficiency that nothing temptation can offer for eternity could match. Pray in the Word of God the provision of God’s love and you will find that worry will be only a thought that gives opportunity to press into God further and deeper.

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 6.24

“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

We live in a world of differentiation and inclusion. These are terms used in education, government, business, finance and industry. We are not unfamiliar with them. We believe we understand them well enough to use them ourselves with mastery. Yet, who is our Master? As Jesus was seeking to teach how we must trust God so much that we pray for our deliverance from the temptations in our lives which call us into the world instead of out of it. We must keep the priorities of our lives in their appropriate order. God understood that when He created man and woman from the resources of the Garden. They were to be in the world but not of it. How they would keep from being a part of the world was to keep God first and to keep His first commands. His command was to eat from all the fruit in the Garden except for one tree. Obedience to that command would have been an act of true worship and praise. That is a purpose of our worship of God as well, as mighty men of God. When we are worshiping and praising God, we are acting out of obedience- we have kept and are keeping God first. As Christians, we worship not only in obedience to keeping God first but to keep Him first on the first day of the week. We even go beyond that and keep God first on the first day of the week offering our tithe and offering (the first fruits) back to God. But, His command was not a legal partnership. It was meant to be a partnership of mercy and grace. Adam and Eve would have nothing if it were not for God. Not so outside of the Garden, at least not as much. For on the outside, Adam and Eve had to exist by the work of their hand. Inside the Garden, they would have worked as well. They were to be the farmer/rancher/caretaker/steward of the Garden. But, it would not have been laborious work. It would have been a labor of love. It would not have been their vocation but their avocation. And each act of love would have been an offering of praise and worship to God. That would be a good life.

But, because there had to be work and the trading of goods in order to maintain earthly life, we got into the money business. Do not forget that the first argument between men was about a tithe. Tithe became more important than relationship and obedience. Money became a pursuit instead of a tool. I suppose then that linking God and money as a question in our lives of allegiance and thus susceptible to temptation, the danger is that we are tempted to reduce God to a tool instead of a relationship of grace and mercy. Jesus taught His followers that we cannot have two Masters. If we have two masters then we love neither in attempting to love both. This is the failure of Adam and Eve. They desired the cake and wanted to eat it, too. They wanted to sate their own desire and imagination and will and try to be in relationship with God. It was a failed experience. Thank God He had no desire to be out of relationship with Adam and Eve. Because of His love for them we still had hope for a future. But, that future cannot be bought with the fruits of our labor, nor our obedience to tithe. It was bought with the blood of Jesus- something which we could not do. We are the beneficiaries of God’s love just as were Adam and Eve. We still have to work because money does not grow on trees. Neither does salvation. But, it was because of one tree that the fate of the other was satisfied and we are able to walk in right relationship with God through Jesus Christ. He is the Lord and Master of our lives. He makes it possible for us to be in restored relationship with God and to serve Him with gladness and life.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Matthew 6.22-23

“”The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Is perception reality? Does it really matter how things appear to others, how they see things in us or how we see things in the world? The mighty man of God is not the breakfast cereal toucan who follows his nose wherever it goes. The mighty man of God is the one whose eyes are a window into their soul. I had to nod in agreement recently when I heard a pastor offer “If we were meant to see the future we would have been given beacons of light instead of a lamp.” God desires that we trust Him in all things and walk by faith, not by sight. His Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light upon our path. What then does this teaching about our eyes imply if not about temptation? When Jesus was confronted about eating things unclean, He replied “It is not what goes into a man that makes him unclean; rather, it is what comes out of a man that does.” Yes, the eyes reflect the heart, mind, spirit and soul of man. The Word should be in our hearts (our inward self) and thus its truth should be evidenced by our eyes- what we see, what we desire to see, what we choose to see. Our eyes do not direct themselves; rather our eyes are directed by what the heart and mind pursues in their contemplation of living life. What good does it do if our eyes are not good, meaning the condition of man’s heart, mind and soul. If they are reflections of the enlightened soul, then the light of truth they provide is of benefit to the mighty man and those he leads. But, if they are of a soul corrupted and polluted by things of the world which have distressed the normal function of life with God in right relationship, then they lead in darkness like a blind man leading the blind.

It makes sense does it not, mighty men, that when we pray for liberation from temptation it should have a particular focus to our eyes. If our eyes take in the word of God and sees it as needful, necessary, purposeful for instruction and correction, then we not only can see the truth but will direct our vision to assist others in their pursuit of the truth, too. The same cannot be said for the opposite. If our intention is to be full of the things of darkness, or even just the shadows of darkness, then we will begin to love the darkness more than the light. That man will stumble and fall on the road littered with the fallen men who are seeking a way which they can no longer see- not the light nor the dark. They are lost. Seek the light of God’s Word and let it into your heart, mind and soul by His Spirit so that you can see the fullness of God’s glory and lead others to enjoy the vision of faith, hope and love as well.
