YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Colossians 3.17

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Jesus instructed His disciples, “I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life and no one can come to the Father except by Me.” There may be many world philosophies and philanthropies, religions and reactions, ideas and ideals which could make your live a very good life. You might even catch a glimpse of Heaven just as Moses glimpsed the Promised Land from a high mountain. But, unless you have Jesus Christ in your life- your heart, mind, soul and spirit, then you have no chance of enjoying the full fruits of the Kingdom of God. Paul had been describing the life of righteousness to the mighty men of Colossae (3.1-16). Now he connects those teachings with this condition- “whatever you do in your life, do it in the name of Jesus.” This means you act in word and work by the authority of Jesus. This is what “in the name of Jesus” means. You are His emissary and ambassador. You are His manager and foreman. You are His servant and friend. You are His brothers. You have the permission of God to do enact the Word of Truth when you walk, talk and live the name of Jesus.

Yes, it is true that many atrocities have been wrought throughout history by those who profess the name of Jesus. But, just saying the name or being a card carrying “name of Jesus” man doesn’t mean that you are actually letting Christ live in you. And there is no other way to embrace the benefits of Heaven unless you do exactly that. Are you walking the walk of faith? Are you speaking the talk of truth? Are you serving the work of love? Are you sharing the good news of a great joy even at the cost of your own life? This is what it means to profess the name of Jesus. And we are not talking about a walk of positive thinking. The little that could didn’t make it to heaven unless he puffed “I think I can, I think I can in Jesus Christ.” And we are not speaking walking the talk of “I am wearing another man’s shoes.” Unless the shoes we are wearing are the sandles of Christ which were removed from His feet and gambled away while soldiers pound iron spikes nailing you to the cross. No, mighty men, whatever we say and do must bear the insignia of God’s love in Jesus Christ- the tear stains of undying compassion and the blood splatters of ultimate giving.

Yes, the life of righteousness God wills for our lives is the life of thanksgiving and gratitude which comes through the voice of His Holy Spirit and the works of love responding by faith to His command.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Colossians 3.16

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Mighty men, remember to sing today in worship with gratitude. We know from Paul’s previous teaching that we should forgive with thanksgiving. But, thanksgiving is different from gratitude. Thanksgiving is a recognition that you have been blessed beyond what your own industry could provide. God is the provision of our lives and sees to it that we are fitted for His service in this world. Gratitude is an attitude. It rises up out of one’s soul in response to the blessings which have been received. One who is gracious recognizes the quality of their being blessed and becomes motivated to take charge of that blessing and put it to work in the life of others. God’s mighty men should be known for their attitude of gratitude. It should fill their heart, mind, soul and spirit. It should be the fuel that powers their heart rooted in love, God’s love, for which we are thankful and for which we have sincere gratitude.

Reader’s Digest promotes “Laughter is the Best Medicine” and William Congreve wrote “Music calms the savage beast (actually he wrote breast meaning one’s heart).” Perhaps Paul’s wisdom on bringing quiet to the soul, calm to community and wisdom to the seeker promotes something similar. God’s will is that we be wise in our dealings with the human condition; which would take in everything. It is not always easy to hear things that are needful but challenge our personal way of thinking and acting. It is equally difficult, at times, to share them. There is good news, however, for the mighty men who know that discipling and mentor others is a part of their duty as God’s servants. Paul offers that we teach reproof through spiritual music- hymns, psalms and songs which rise up out of the spirit in communion with God. I would say it is a novel idea but one that bears pause for reflection. Can you imagine how much music we actually listen to? Music has a message all of its own without benefit of words. It can calm as well as incite. It can inspire as well as draw one into contemplation. It can open doors and windows to a broader world and close those through which evil persists to enter. While it is not recorded, I have no doubt that our Lord and Savior must have sung as well. What else does one do around a campfire except to tell stories and sing songs. Okay, there is eating, also, but not without prayer and who says that even that prayer wasn’t sung. Listening to the prayers for Passover you cannot help but hear the lilt and measure of them and know they are songs offered to God.

No, I am not talking about Mary Poppin’s “a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.” But, it seems to me that if we found the opportunity to add some musicality to our teaching then the lesson might certainly go down a little more easily. Perhaps that is the language of angels which Paul spoke of- it is music. It is the continual and eternal melody of those who are so inspired by the awesome presence of God. I know that when I am frustrated and upset, I turn to a song or a whistle to fill my space instead of complaining. I should do it more. Yes, it may even alert others that there is a burden I am working on but what a pleasant warning that presents instead of a scowl and a howl. Come on, mighty men, let the music God has put in your spirit ring out with the truth of His wisdom. Who knows, much of that wisdom may have been learned while you were young and had songs sung to you as you fell asleep or when you were upset and your mother quietened you. To catch a phrase “it couldn’t hurt”; so let’s sing more and worry less.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Colossians 3.15

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

On the night when Christ was turned in to the temple rulers by Judas, the night when He had gathered with His closest followers in an upper room to celebrate Passover, Jesus encouraged His disciples saying “Peace, I give to you; my peace, I leave with you. I do not do this as the world does. So I tell you, do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.” We know what the rest of that conversation, actually a monologue, was all about. However, the disciples did not. What would you have been thinking if you heard “do not be afraid, don’t let your hearts be troubled”? It certainly can’t be good news, can it? It was good news and we are still processing it even today. Jesus spoke to those mighty men about His impending death and its necessity. Who wants to hear about the end of life when life seems to be beginning? In truth, the disciples were fraught with fear. Jesus’ family feared for His life. Even Judas in his “betrayal” was responding out of fear thinking that Jesus would somehow miss the moment of revealing Himself as the true messianic ruler over Israel who would purge the temple of evil- foreign and domestic. Fear is a terrible enemy of God’s people if not understood in the correct light. That light is, of course, Jesus Christ who is the “light of the world.”

That is why Paul writes to the mighty men of Colossae, and to each of us, about combating the enemy of life- fear, with the peace of Jesus Christ. God’s will is that we should fear Him alone and nothing else. If God is on our side then it will never matter who sets themselves against us. He is our protector and savior. He is our guard and our sanctuary. He is all we ever need in every aspect of our lives. It is cause for thanksgiving. And there it is in Paul’s teaching- thanksgiving. It may sound like an aside “and be thankful.” But, it is not an aside; it is an affirmation. If we live lives filled with thanksgiving then we can be at peace in the world. Why? Because what we need to make it each day is being provided to us by the God who loves us beyond measure. He is an extreme God who has taken extreme measures to bring peace into our lives. It is by the Holy Spirit of God that Jesus Christ lives in us. This in and of itself is cause for thanksgiving. Because God did not forsake His Son. He rewarded His obedience which came with a great price, the price of His own earthly life, by restoring His eternal life and rightful place at His right hand. He is restoring us as well by the very power of resurrection which happens in our lives upon our profession of faith. When we seem to have died to our future by the loss of a spouse, a job, an opportunity, etc., God restores us. It is His will and promise to do so because He wants us to be at peace with ourselves and Him. And how can we be at peace? Paul suggests that we “be thankful.” It is not an aside but a priority. It comes last in that teaching so it will be first in the heart and mind of God’s mighty men. May it be so in yours today and every day.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Colossians 3.12-14

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, cover yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

God’s will is that His people remain together. He connects them with His love. That is why the Apostle Paul spoke to the mighty men of Corinth with a detailed description of God’s love. They were a fractured congregation made of little groups who followed their own ideal leader. It isn’t so bad to have someone you look up to within your interest group. It becomes pervasive when you think everyone should look up to that person. It is sinful when that person and your desire elevates them above the Godhead- Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each group had worthy attributes. Each had contributed something positive to the body of Christ. However, their struggle for supremacy made them no better than those Babylonians who attempted to reach equality with God by building a tower to the heavens.

Of course, we know that no matter how tall the tower they would not find the heaven they were looking for. Jesus declared to His followers, “The Kingdom of Heaven is in the midst of you.” All those Babylonians could do was to reach into outer space if their technology was sufficient and the resources as well. They would have died from oxygen deprivation and most certainly would have met God and found themselves unequal. They would have been as less than God as Adam and Eve discovered in the Garden of Eden. What they did not take into account, either the Babylonians or Adam and Eve, was the element of love that would keep them together. The first critical element in God’s love is not passion or sexual desire. Instead, it is obedience and humility before the One True God. As mighty men of God we must maintain our proper perspective. Equality with God is not something we should even seek. Being like God should be our greatest desire. Being like God would infuse our every word and deed with the blessing of true love. True love is not seeking something for ourselves. True love is serving others before one’s self. Denying one’s self does not mean we abuse ourselves. Instead, it means that we love ourselves appropriately with humility and obedience. We must love ourselves; it is commanded. Remember, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Further, love your neighbor as you yourself are loved.” How are we loved? It is how we are loved by God who is compassionate, kind, humble, gentle, patient and forgiving. These characteristics and elements are what keep us together. Without them, we are a fractured people living fractures lives in a fractures world that refuses to see and receive its healing.

There is no loss for advice on how to be a well-dressed man. A simple google will tell you “everything you need to know on how to be one.” Except, I didn’t find HIS Word for Today listed. You see it doesn’t matter as much to God what kind of clothes you wear as long as you are a virtuous and forgiving man. As Paul writes to the mighty men of Collosae he knows he is speaking to men from all walks of life. They represent various vocations, destinations and designations. There would be slave and free men hearing his letter read to the church. There would be rich men and poor men, educated in schools and educated in life. There would be sick men and healthy men. The spectrum would be wide and full, each of them dressed with nuances reflecting their station. The same as with men of today which says that it doesn’t matter what you wear in the eyes of the world that matters most to God. Instead, it is the condition of your heart, soul and mind that speaks of your station as a mighty man of God.

So what is the wardrobe of God’s will for a mighty man? It is of virture- kindness, compassion, gentleness, humility and patience. It is of a right spirit: forgiving as one forgiven. It is most of all one whose life-layered apparel includes the overcoat or robe of love which pulls the ensemble together as one awesome God-suited man. In this regard, we can hear the “love description” Paul shared with the mighty men of Corinth as he wrote, “So abide these three- faith, hope and love; and the greatest of these is love.” Indeed, if a man is not clothed with God’s love then he is no better than the emperor in his new clothes. People who are unloving as equally ignorant of their own condition but embarassingly revealed to the rest of the world. Being covered with love doesn’t make you perfect as a man of God but it keeps you on the playing field. If you have not love, then you are just a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. That would qualify you for to be in the stands watching a World Cup soccer match. But, God isn’t as interested in his mighty men being spectators. Life was not meant to be a spectator sport. Instead, God’s will is that we are fully engaged in life with life, His life and His love.

God’s will is for us to live into the image in which we were created. Even in a perfect world, God still knew the value of forgiveness. Even though He never had a reason to exercise forgiveness it did not mean He did not know how to forgive. How sad in this world when so many know the value of forgiveness and the means to forgive but they harden their heart to a forgiving spirit. This is not the will of God. It is not the image in which God’s mighty men were created. Why did God allow Satan to enter the Garden and bring temptation before Adam and Eve? It was to demonstrate to them a forgiving spirit. He knew they were not perfect. He knew they would fall short of the expectation to live in His image. It wasn’t a part of His plan as if we had disabled them. There can be only One God. But, if they did not know how to forgive each other nor how to receive forgiveness from God then their chance of survival as a people bound in relationship through love was small.

God’s will is to be forgiving. It is His will that we be forgiveness receiving. It doesn’t matter how forgiving God can be. Indeed, He has been forgiving to the maximum effort through Jesus Christ who died on the cross to free us from the burden of our sin. It can’t get any better or more extreme than that. But, if we are not willing to receive His forgiveness and then unwilling to share it then it avails us nothing. Jesus framed this teaching in the parable of the debtor. He owed a tremendous amount of money and when his debt was called, he could not pay. The master forgave him his debt and he went away a free man. No sooner had he left the master’s house than he confronted a man who owed him a mere pittance. Yet, when that debt was called and found unpayable, he began to berate the man and make charges against him. When the master learned of his behavior, he called the man back to his house and his fate was worse than it would have been at the first.

Mighty men, were you just in the Master’s house? Did you celebrate the gospel of Jesus Christ and revel in His forgiveness, mercy and grace? Did you proclaim the wideness of God’s love and the blessing of His Holy Spirit over your life? Did you feel the burdens of life lifted from you? Did you hear God be exhausted of receiving all that you had to give to Him in prayer and in praise? Were you made new again in that fellowship and feel as if the image in which you were remade was alive and well? How would anyone know except to see how you share that good news of forgiveness with others who are indebted to you either by past deed or current one or even something you may expect in the future from someone. Yes, imagine the power of God to transform others, and yourself, if you forgive your brother before he acts. It may well change his mind about you and about himself.

I want to take this time to honor the memory and life of Bob Rollins, a mighty man of God, who was called home to be with his heavenly Father on Saturday. Though I only knew him for a year as his pastor at the Rusk Christian Church, his life was a joy and a pleasure that was extended to me, my wife- Lisa and our family. He always had cause to make us laugh and to take life as it came to us. His heart was open to all he met. His covenant with God was unshakable. He was a man of principles and he stood by them. He and his wife, Judy, are forever a part of our lives as they covered us with compassion, kindness, humility (yes, even Bob), gentleness and patience. They made our wedding a blessing of family and friends. We are forever in their debt for how they have loved us in such a short time. As we moved, they moved, too, but we are never apart. Even now, as we embrace the reality of his death, we know that nothing can separate us from the love of God and good friends. There is no height nor depth nor power on earth nor beneath the earth nor in the air that can cause us to forget or deny the course of love that we have shared. You will be missed in this world, dear friend, but we know of that glad reunion we will share on that day when all shall be revealed.

Shalom, mighty man and good friend!

Mighty men of God, be aware of your fashion statements. How do you present yourselves in public? No, I am not speaking of how you dress although much attention could be given to that part of our lives. Instead, I am asking for us to pay attention to how we cover ourselves in the world. What does it mean to “cover” ourselves? A quick look at Webster’s Dictionary reveals two basic meanings. I know they will mean something to each of God’s mighty men.

First, to cover one’s self means using something like a cloth, lid or a solid object to offer protection or concealment. Our clothes, a hat, even a bale of hay can provide protection from the elements or hide something we might not want revealed. Spiritually speaking, we are urged to cover ourselves with kindness, compassion, humility, gentleness and patience. These attitudes are meant to protect us from falling into defensive habits when we have lost sight of who we are in Christ Jesus. It is easy to do battle with someone who is attacking our character, our work or our beliefs by returning the same kind of attack. Those attacks focus on our flaws and weaknesses. The purpose of the attack is not to strengthen ourselves but to weaken others so that the comparison between the two combatants favors one by default and disfavors the other by fault. But, as mighty men of God, we have been forgiven of our sins and given the Holy Spirit as the promise of strengthening us in our transformation to be new creations. While our flaws and faults may still exist in the flesh, clothing ourselves with the appropriate cover gives us protection from the elements of hatred and conceals them with the presence of Christ. Yes, even the enemy has a hard time highlighting our faults when we spend our time being kind, compassionate, humble, gentle and patient. These are our first lines of defense. Used appropriately, authentically and continually gives us victory over the world.

Second, to cover one’s self means to describe or analyze the most important aspects or qualities of something or someone. How important it is to make sure that God’s mighty men focus on the others in their daily lives and not themselves. When caught in the midst of human battle and personality conflicts in our home, at work or just in the world let our focus be on the strengths we can see in those others that they themselves may not see. We can speak into being the very qualities we know God has put into every person. It is an activity of grace when we promote the well-being of others and turn their eyes to see themselves as God intends and not as the world pretends. God’s mighty men are, in essence, covering them with an anointing of that grace so they are protected from harm- whether it is the harm others mean to cause on them or the harm they may or may not know they are causing themselves.

This is the gospel in action and a joy to behold. It is God’s will which we can see perfectly in what Christ has done for us. He has covered us with His love, mercy and forgiveness to protect us from the Evil One. He has also blessed us and anointed us with His Holy Spirit so that we can see ourselves as God intends and desires. As He has done it for us, it is now up to us to do for others.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Luke 15.31-32

“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

A simple reminder of the application of grace. Because of the Father’s will and His love for us- we receive what we do not deserve and cannot earn; we do not receive what we likely deserve because of our thoughts and actions. In Christ, God sees us as worthy of His mercy and love. He welcomes us into His presence with thanksgiving.
