YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

1 Thessalonians 5.16-18

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

If someone urges us to rejoice always and pray continually we nod in consent because that seems like no big deal. But, when we hear “give thanks in all circumstances,” well, Paul you went from preaching to meddling. In all circumstances, really? That sounds like our marriage vows- “in sickness and in health, for richer and poorer, in good times and bad, till death us do part.” Just the thought that in every situation of our lives we have to be thankful seems like a little much, doesn’t it? I mean, I get being thankful when things aren’t in conflict, when nothing is happening at all- good or bad, and when things are going my way. But, now you want me to accept that it is God’s will for us to be thankful when things are on a downhill slide, when I don’t like my job and would rather stay in bed and accept the consequences, when it feels like the whole world is against me and it isn’t just an athletic pep talk, and when I know that people just hate me and I am not liking myself too much either? Whew, just thinking of all that makes me tired and you want me to be thankful in that, too? Why, if I really stop to think about it, most of our lives seems like bad news and that means I would be thankful for the majority of my life just on the negative side.

Oh, I guess that might be the point, huh? If I have to be thankful in each situation and I find it easier to be thankful when I see the good, even if it were the lone tree in a forest of delirium, and that goodness is accepted as a blessing from God, then I have to admit that God is in those situations with me. That would be a good thing. Not only is God in them with me, He probably was there before me. Truth be known, I would pray God is there after me and clean up any mess I made that is beyond the ability of those left behind to manage on their own. That would be a good thing, too. Thank God He wouldn’t let me live this new life of Christ without some clear explanations of His will. And, I pray, it is a moment of thanksgiving for each mighty man as they realize this truth is the same for them, too. Let’s give thanks together and change each situation into a time of worship and praise of the God who loves us enough to give us the very best when it looked like what we deserved was the very worst.

Don’t be confused. Paul’s teaching on what is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus is not that you non-stop pray as if you have nothing else to talk about or do. But, to pray continually does mean that we should be praying a whole lot more than what we do. If we were honest with ourselves, one another and with God, we have missed many opportunities to pray. There shouldn’t be a time in our lives that wasn’t covered by prayer, led by prayer or returned with thanks. When we were talking with a friend who shared a need or problem or a celebration in their lives- did we pray for them? When we witnessed a tragedy, accident or miracle- did we respond first with prayer? When we were struggling with our own thoughts, expectations and struggles- did we commit them to God in prayer? Prayer is not limited to the reciting of the Lord’s Prayer at worship, a mealtime prayer when we are at our own dinner table or the Prayer of Jabez when we felt convicted that something else should have been done. No, instead, it is the will of God that prayer be a mighty tool in our box of service or a powerful weapon in our arsenal of faith. Prayer should not be random but it should be realized. It should not be when we think about it but when we are thinking. Consider that most of the time when you hear that whisper in your heart, mind or soul that it is the Holy Spirit of God praying for you, urging you to pray with Him or simply speaking the truth to you in love to get you off square one! Commit yourselves, mighty men of God to the powerful reality of prayer and its constant desire to be expressed.

When in doubt turn to sing a praise chorus or repeat a favorite psalm. Paul urged the early Church to sing hymns, psalms and spiritual songs. In all of our hearts and minds there is a default memory of such a song. One of those that comes to mind, and I love singing all the time, is derived from Philippians 4.4 “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say, rejoice.” The emphasis is emphatic. This is not just a suggestion for something nice to do which might be helpful. No, it is an emphatic emphasis on our state of being and mind before the world, the Lord God and the Lord Jesus Christ. We are to rejoice always; in all times, in every situation, in every mental condition and psychological expression and in every place where we find ourselves. We are to rejoice. What does it mean to “rejoice.” It means to “give joy.” Isn’t that the gospel impetus? Isn’t the purpose of the gospel to give joy? When Jesus came into the world from His throne in Heaven to be the babe in Bethlehem, the angels directed the shepherds to repent of their desire to fear and be as good as dead and to report the good news of a great joy. When they experienced the glory of the Lord and that its purpose was to do them and the world good, they were elated and overjoyed. They were beside themselves that God favored even them to be evangelists of this gospel good news. But, it was not enough to be joyful in and of themselves. They did not settle back around the dying embers of the night’s fire to bask in the glow of the rising sun. No, they went to Bethlehem to see who they were indebted to for this good news of such great joy- the Messiah.

As God’s mighty men, we are to rejoice. We are to commit ourselves to what Paul said is one of the three expressions of God’s will in our lives- rejoice always. I cannot help but to consider the word “rejoice” itself visually. If I were to view it by syllables it would read “re-joice.” How do I re-joice? Wait. How do I “joice”? Well, the word as we know it means “joy.” I do not know anyone who does not have this mental picture of joy except for those who never have had a reason to have experienced joy. What a sad commentary on life if there are people who have no experience with joy. It is for those people that God sent Jesus into the world. He came to restore their true joy. True joy had not been known since the world was created. When God declared “It is good,” He was expressing true joy. Joy was a happening event about things that were happening as they were willed to be. But, the enemy wants to steal our joy. That means in the Garden of Eden joy was expressed as bliss, innocence and pure living. Sound unfamiliar? It should because the only time such joy was known after that would have been in relation to Jesus Christ. If our joy, innocence and bliss is restored by Jesus Christ coming into the world and coming into our lives then we should be so glad, elated and overjoyed that we have no other recourse than to share it with others.

Okay, so “joice” means joy (from the French). So, what does “re-joice” mean but to add the emphatic force of expression to our joy. We do not sing “joy to the world” as a funeral dirge. We sing it loud, clear and resounding as if each each it reaches is a mountainside to echo back the good news. We fill our lungs, our mouths, our mind, our heart, our being, our room, our world and our atmosphere with this abundant joy. Then add the command, as it was by Paul to the mighty men of Philippi, “rejoice and rejoice always!” As God’s mighty men we are are “re-re-joice.” In other words, we are to share our joy exponentially. Yes, in our witness that God has made it possible for us to overcome the circumstances of the world perverted by sin and the Enemy, we are to tell others and start the evangelism domino train so they will tell others and they will tell others. Come on, mighty men; pump your arms like the drivers of the steam locomotive and shout out like the train whistle “RE JOICE; REEEEEEEE JOICE!” Wow, do that a couple of times and not only will people think you are crazy but they will give you the opportunity to explain why! Isn’t that God’s will? It not only overcomes what is wrong in our lives but gives our lives the evangelistic impetus to fulfill the commission of Christ to go into all the world and make disciples in all nations. REEEEEEE JOICE. Again, I say, rejoice!.

As I grow older, I appreciate the value of a list. A list can represent the goals I have set for today. They can be goals of a practical nature: a shopping list, a honey do list or a list of names of people I will meet today so I can know them through rehearsal and call them when I meet them. A list keeps you on track when spontaneous events rise up and divert your attention from the task so that you do not forget the people. A list can be goals you have set for the future so that you can monitor your progress toward achieving them. A list can be of your failures in the past. I suggest you throw that list away. It is not God’s will that you keep a list of your mistakes, errors, sins, bad decisions and foolish ways. In Christ Jesus you have been set free from this list. Jesus knows that if you seek to carry that list around it will grow daily and your bondage to the past will eventually consume your future. We do not need to keep a list of our past because it can easily be summed up in one phrase, “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”

Yet, it is that scripture also teaches us that as in one man, Adam, all have become sinners; so, too, in one man, Jesus Christ, all men have been made righteous. This means that God replaces our old list with a new list. It is a list of things we can do. It isn’t a must do list from God because there is nothing we can do to earn this righteous, this grace or this mercy. God does not expect us to repay Him for His gift. Instead, God’s will is that we choose to follow His way and bring highlight to the works of mercy, grace and righteousness so that they can become personally clear to others. It is not by our works or intentions that we receive grace nor maintain it. But, it is by our works and intentions that we express our joy in the Lord for this indescribable gift. Thus, it is a happy list which God gives to us as instructions for our every day. We do not need to worry about what God’s will is for our life because we have the list: rejoice always, pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

1 Peter 3.8-9

” Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Do not be afraid to share what you have with others. Your resource is a renewable resource; plentiful in the spirit and promise of God. Remember the feeding of the five thousand and the two thousand? From a little which was had more was left over and many were fed in between. Consider the parable of the sower. Jesus speaks of the viability of the soil as the determiner of the harvest. Each soil bore a harvest though the least was not profitable for man but for the birds. If God cares enough for the least of these how much more will He care for us who are a little less than the angels. But, that was not the end of the parable. As He explained it to the disciples He spoke of a spiritual harvest which was a hundred, sixty or thirty times greater in abundance. How many times have you heard that phrase in a teaching and thought “thirty times is good for me because that is thirty times more than what I have.” Mighty men, even the servant who had just one talent and was given one portion of the master’s property to tend to was expected to tend to it and turn a profit. He would have made a profit if he had combined his talent which the master saw with the gift of faith which the master had given him. It is the same for you as Peter said, “Give to others a blessing, even the enemy, because this is God’s will for your life to fulfill and for it you will receive an even greater blessing.” We do not do it for the blessing but because of it. If the blessing of abundance and prosperity is already ours then how much more will our faith, hope and love (God’s multipliers) increase that blessing when we demonstrate them before all the world.

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

All behavior is based on need. I read that banner for four years as it hung in Austin CAN! Academy. It was a welcomed reminder of the situations in which our students continually found themselves. It was a reminder to teachers and administrators to look beyond the surface of a student’s behavior. Instead of a quick, snap judgment we should be sympathetic, if not empathetic, listeners and be prepared to reach, teach and move the student beyond their poor reaction to their need and become active advocates for good solutions. Look into the Ten Commandments and you will find one of these expressions. “Children honor your mother and father so that it will go well with you in the days to come.” I watch the way some children treat their parents and wonder how short is their calendar. But, then I also have to bear in mind what situation that child may be in that gives them no better training to respond appropriately even in a difficult situation.

God’s will is that we be a blessing to others. We are not to focus blessings on those who know how to receive a blessing. Doing that is like loving those who already love us. We are taught in scripture that that is no measure of love. Instead, we are to add blessings on those who struggle with the idea of being blessed by those who are the recipients of God’s love. Our blessing of others is a testimony and witness of the goodness that exists for them. In His desire that all His children have the opportunity to know of His love and His want to bless them, He urges us to reach out beyond the behavior, seek out the need and meet it with the abundant resource that is given to us for all eternity..

The word of the Lord leading into this teaching was directed to husbands and wives. I am not ignoring that teaching at all because it is certainly a part of God’s mighty plan to have mighty men and mighty women to be in mighty relationships. Instead, I was just explaining why today’s instruction started with “finally, all of you.” It is God’s will that we be in community, a mighty community of faith and hope and love. Just as husbands and wives ought to be considerate, reverent, respectful and submissive in order to maintain God’s will of right relationship so that future generations of the children of God will be exposed to that spiritual environment, so should the entire community be joined together as one in order to fully receive the blessing of God He has planned for them in their lives on earth. It is the principle of “oneness.” Husbands and wives are to be as one just as Christ and God are One and Christ and the Church are one. But, Christ teaches that as we are individually one with Him so we must be one with one another. Does it not stand to reason then that as one body becomes one in Christ another body in Christ should become one with them? And so on and so forth. Israel was never meant to stand alone in the world any more than it was meant to stand on its own. Instead, Israel (the descendants of Abraham and the covenant rendered between he and God) and the New Israel (the Church as descendants of Christ) was brought into being to be the one witness of righteousness and faithfulness before the world so that they, too, could come into the community of true faith and be one with one another and with God. The only thing we are to be separate from is sin and the Devil.

So, it is natural that we move from family (husband and wife…remember Christ is the groom and the Church is the bride) to community (the blending of families). So, what is God’s baseline understanding and will for the community of faith? It is, as we read today, to be “like-minded, sympathetic, loving one another, compassionate and humble.” In many instances this will require great effort because it is not natural to the environment which the enemy has sown into the world. Our past is littered with lingering examples of the very opposite of what God wills. Of course, it has been that way since man and woman found themselves separated from one another and from God in the Garden as a result of the negative influence of Satan. But, we do not live by that old reality nor the old covenant. Instead, we have been born as new creations to live according to the new covenant. The new day is dawning and times “they ought to be a-changing.” To borrow from a popular folk song “The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind. The answer is blowing in the wind.” That wind is none other than the breath of God who first breathed into Adam and Eve and now desires to breathe into His new creations that they might have true live and have it abundantly.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

1 Peter 3.17

“For it is better, if what you are doing is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

If you have assumed the position in your life that adopts “the path of least resistance” as the way to determine what you shall do, how you shall live and who you shall be, then I offer only one question. That question is “Who is it better to resist- man or God?” I would believe that it is better for the one who wants to be a mighty man of God to resist man and the enemy of man and God and live in peace and joy in heaven than try to accommodate the changing will of any who are not aligned with God. For in your desire to get along with man, you can too easily become an enemy of God. The fate of that man is death and that death is so final that even its dying becomes eternal torment. Seeking the path of least resistance to God may create conflicts with the world and those who live by it so they can live for it but it opens the door to blessing and life that knows no end. Remember the story of Balaam who was told by God to do what He commanded and consider only doing that? Balaam decided to compromise himself between Balak the King and the Lord his God. Three times the donkey on which he rode turned to the side to avoid the angel of death who stood in the middle of the road waiting for Balaam. Balaam could not see him but the donkey could. Only after God opened the mouth of the donkey and he spoke the truth to Balaam did he see the angel standing before him and he repented. The moral of this story is to not compromise your word and action which is God’s will for your life with that of the world which is only for their own life. The enemy does not really care about you. His care for you is a ruse to lure you in and then steal away the blessing that you have. Yes, it may not always go easily in this world for those who choose to accept God’s choosing them. But, that path of least resistance you may choose that seems to have no problems in front of you may be fraught with dangers that will take your life and never give it back.

Choose God who will accept the life you give Him and in return give you the life of Christ forever in faith, hope and love.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 8.30

“And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Do you not only struggle with what God’s will is for your life but with a sense of powerlessness and depression? It is easy to get lost in this world if you have a false sense of your purpose and your belonging. In fact, the enemy counts on this and empowers this perspective so as to keep God’s children from actualizing the truth that is already out there. No, I am not speaking of the “X Files,” for those who are of the age to remember that television series. Before the X files declared the truth was out there, God’s Word already did. The most tangible and visible proof of the existence of that truth is the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ Himself. He declared, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life and no one can approach the Father except to do so as me.” Then He went to the cross so that we could do exactly that. Now, the X Files wanted to describe an “alien conspiracy-government cover-up” as the journey for truth. The truth be known, God’s men had become aliens in a strange world of sin’s making. We are not to be at home in a sinful world. We are called to sojourn in this world and make of it, or at least in it, a better world. Mostly this will happen whenever we declare the truth as Paul described it to the Christians throughout the reaches of the Roman Empire. What is that truth? In Jesus Christ, we have been glorified. Jesus glorified God at the cross. God glorified Jesus at the resurrection. We glorify God when we take up the cross to follow Him throughout the world for all the days of our lives. He glorifies us with the blessings and miracles of faith revealed in and through our lives. God’s will for us is to glorify His creation and be glorified. He does not self-glorify nor does He demand of His creation that they glorify Him. He does describe the kind of life that results from keeping a keen focus on Him and then makes it possible for us to actuate that life personally day by day, day after day.

So, when we are lost and struggling for who you are or what you are remember what is God’s will for your life. He has predetermined that His desire for your life is to be called sons or daughters of the Most High and to enjoy the full benefits and privileges of that position. If that is His will, and it is, and if He has made it possible for that truth to be true, and He did, then all we need to do is accept it. We can accept it even when we cannot see it yet in our lives. We can see it by faith. Faith is “believing is seeing” which is God’s will. We must put off the will of the world and the enemy which abides by “seeing is believing” which is futile and frustrating and ultimately can lead to so many lost opportunities to see the wonder and blessing of God’s will in this world and in our lives.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 8.29

“For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

If it is God’s will and desire to populate heaven and earth with His people and join them together in Spirit and in Truth as One Family, shouldn’t it be our will as well? As mighty men of God are we not called to be heads of households and fathers to the fatherless? Scripture is clear that household is not just the house we inhabit during our earthly lives- a place to lay our head. The gospel declares that the Son of Man had no place to lay His head; yet He was the Head of the household of disciples. A life group, a Bible study group, a prayer group, a Christian Education class, a support group, a worship service, a congregation, even your office can be a household of God of which you are a part and perhaps even provide leadership to in worship, praise and stewardship. When Jesus answered those who brought word to Him that His mother, Mary, and His siblings had come to offer care to Him with “Those who do the will of My Heavenly Father are my true family,” He was defining even that household of believers as His own.

Who are the members of our family? How wide is our embrace for those we call “home”? When the family of our flesh and blood seem distant, do we cling to ourselves or make reasonable fascimiles of objects and animals to take their place? Or do we reach out in faith to those whom God has already known and determined in His Heart and Mind and Spirit that they are members of His family just as we are? Are we sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with our neighbor, the stranger, the man or woman in the grocery store line with us or our colleagues at work so that they are informed of their place of honor at the eternal banquet table of God? Are we moving out into the frontier of our community or region, nation or foreign country to recover, reclaim and adopt those whom the world enslaves or places in subterfuge for its own benefit at the cost of their lives and dignity as members of our immediate family just as God has done for us through Jesus Christ into His family? Are we members of God’s family? Have we fully recognized this truth and this reality for ourselves? Do we not know? Have we not heard?

If not, then don’t you think we have wasted enough time and surrendered enough opportunities to the enemy so he could consume the innocent, pervert the outcast and diminish the family of God? The battle for the family is on! Let’s win! Let’s Win Big!!! God loves a big family. He doesn’t want His Son to be an only child.
