YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.16

“Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

The greatest thing that stands in the way of our doing God’s will is, of course, ourselves. We bask in the glow of the creation story- we are made in the image of God. We love to cuddle up with Psalm 8- “what is man that You are mindful of him for You have made him like heavenly beings.” We flex our muscles with the commissioning of the disciples- “All authority on earth and of Heaven I bestow to you.” Wow! We are pretty great stuff. And yet, in the midst of that greatness we tend to forget Paul’s reminder- “For we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Well, not every man has sinned and fallen short. There was this one guy, Jesus of Nazareth, who came close but remembered who and what He was and what He was to do and He avoided the poison of self-will. Oh, you don’t think so? It was Jesus who said during His prayer time before He was arrested to be tried an crucified, “If it be possible, Lord, take this cup from me.” No sooner had He prayed this in a moment of human awareness that He re-embraced His divinity and He prayed, “Not my will but Yours be done by Me, in Me and through Me.” Whew! That was close. I bet the Devil’s dark heart and empty soul had already leapt for joy in one moment only to be dashed to Hell forever in the next.

It was Mac Davis who sang, “O Lord it’s hard to be humble when you are perfect in every way.” Yes, man, even mighty men, can easily become legends in their own mind. But, what about God? The God who through Christ has saved our sin-stained lives (heart, mind, soul and body) from the fate of Satan is a part of our lives. We cannot forgot about Him nor His call to righteousness and godliness in our lives. Even that millisecond of consideration of not going to the cross on the part of Jesus was for our benefit. It really wasn’t to say how much Jesus was like us. Why? Because He was a fleshly being? No, it really is about showing us how much we are like Him. We can consider the opportunity to surrender to our flesh but let the Spirit of God which reveals all truth take the lead and we can do all things- especially the difficult ones! You see, it isn’t about who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven; that will always be Christ. It is about who desires to be the least of all by becoming servant to all and working to model God’s will by loving one another as if they were greater than ourselves. Of course, doing that makes us great in God’s eyes. But, then, we always were great and special in His eyes because He really loves us. It is for this reason we can be and should be humble before others and show His love to everyone regardless of their position.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.15

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

God’s will is to share life with others and to share in the life of others. It’s not meddling; it is ministering. Paul urges the mighty men of God found throughout the Roman Empire to rejoice and mourn in their appropriate times. I remember one teaching of Jesus concerning the Pharisees question about why Jesus’ disciples did not fast. Their behavior was inappropriate for the time as they understood it. The problem was that the Pharisees didn’t understand what time it was. In Matthew 9.15, Jesus said, “It is not time for mourning while the bridegroom is away. There is a time coming when the bridegroom will be taken away and that will be the time for mourning.” It was a short-lived season of mourning for the disciples. A little less than three days; barely 48 hours actually- three in the afternoon on Friday until dawn on Sunday. In fact, it may well have been with the Sabbath in mind that God knew it would be three days before they were t discover Jesus had been released from the dead and was not in the tomb. Thomas mourned a little longer until Jesus appeared to him in the Upper Room and invited him to touch where His earthly body had been wounded. It would be a little longer than that for Peter who mourned until Jesus reconciled him by the lakeside.

So, mighty men, we are to mourn with those who mourn. Who are they? They are those who do not know that the Bridegroom was gone and returned. He has gone away but He was not taken. He has gone to prepare a place for all of us who believe that He is the Christ so that we can live with Him forever in the Kingdom of Heaven. We mourn the dead but not those who have been raised from the dead. We do not mourn for we are not dead but we can mourn with those whose hope is dead. It should not be for long. It should be just for a short time and then we will rejoice. We rejoice as the angels in heaven rejoice when one who was lost, as good as dead, is found and brought back to the Master of the Sheep. They rejoice in the one who was found, it was us at one time, and with the One who found them, which is now us more of the time than ever before. Rejoice and be glad forever and let the sadness of life and the enemy who uses sadness to blind others to the truth end quickly. This is the will of God.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.14

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

So, what did you really think about the drive who roared up behind you on the highway, passed you, lane dove in front of you and exited quickly? Okay, so it isn’t persecution but the admonition for accomplishing this part of God’s will remains the same. We are to bless people and not curse them. To curse them has a modern understanding of “cussin’ them.” Of course, mighty men of God are not to be using inappropriate language and shouldn’t be “cussin’ them” nor even think about doing such things. Instead, we should be adding a blessing to their lives and not wishing that we would have the opportunity to gloat over them when they get pulled over for speeding or reckless driving. (Or, should I say “wreckless” driving because those drives rarely are in accidents; it seems they only cause them.)

As I said, I don’t think that is what Paul had in mind as he addressed the mighty men of the Roman Empire. It is possible that his chariot may have gotten cut off by another chariot but that wouldn’t be persecution. They probably didn’t know or care that his belief system was different than theirs; he was, after all, a Roman as well as a Jew and so they wouldn’t have been able to tell by racial profiling. But, if they did and they wanted to do something far worse than lane diving that would enter into the realm of persecution. Paul had experienced persecution in his own life. He had been a persecutor of Christians before his Damascus Road conversion. He saw and felt the persecution and mistreatment of Christ followers by Romans and Jews alike, Greeks, too, and others. It is a sad social commentary on life when others set out to systematically and lethally intend to harm another just because their belief system is different from their own. It is a heinous reality that exists even today and quite likely to continue to exist until Jesus’ return. Such intolerance exists in this country in the name of inclusion. In many places, the rights of others and their religious beliefs are protected while those of Christ followers are questioned and limited. But, we have to know that when we are doing God’s will no enemy shall be able to stand over us in victory. Christ is the victory. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world. Our response to those who wish to do mental, emotional and physical harm to the body of Christ is to bless them with mercy and forgiveness. They do not, and in many instances they will not, answer to us. They are afflicting the body whose head is Jesus Christ Himself. They will answer to Him on the day of Judgment. And so will we as mighty men of God. How much better it will be for those on that Day who have embraced the will of God to bless others with mercy, grace and love; including the enemy. Those who wish to persecute the body of Christ in whole and in part need our compassion and prayer for it will be a devastating day for those who have not embraced Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. On that Day, I am not sure that Jesus’ appearance will be their Damascus Road. We can only prayer that in that 11th hour and all hours preceding it can and will be their opportunity to receive the blessing of the Lord and live.

YOUR Will be done in the year to come- 2014

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.13

“Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

And a man who was seeking to show himself just before Jesus asked, “Who is my neighbor that I should love him as I love myself?” How many of us actually know our neighbors? That would probably be a great place to start practicing the will of God, don’t you think. Jesus spoke of a man who was seen by many to be incapable of being just. He was the victim of racial profiling. He was a Samaritan and deemed socially unacceptable to those who were Jewish. Yet, we find Jesus spending time with Samaritans and extending to them the right hand of fellowship along with blessing and healing. This Samaritan had been doing business in Jerusalem (yes, we don’t have to like people to do business with them even today.) He hadn’t gotten very far when he happened upon a most unfortunate man lying in the ditch naked and bleeding. He did not think of whether this man was worthy of saving or whether his own life was in danger. He cared only for the man and he saved him. He unpacked his bag and shared his clothes. He took water and wine and washed his wounds. He took a woven piece of fabric he had purchased for his wife and daughter and made bandages from it. He put him on his own donkey and walked them both to the nearest town and rented him a room and paid for his medical care with a promise to return soon to check on the man and to make good on his account. Then the man left for home- all in a day’s work. Jesus said that the actions of the man proved him to be just. He wasn’t just just because he said so.

Doesn’t it seem clear, mighty men of God, that the same is true for those who are of God? It is easy to say we are of God. It is less complicated to be godly to those who are “acceptable” to us and those whom we find it easy to love. But, it will be our actions to those outside of our comfort zone that will surely bear witness to whether we are truly of God or not. When can we do God’s will? Whenever we practice being a neighbor to those who are not our neighbors as well as to those who are, then we are doing the will of God.

“Your will be done in the year to come – 2014!”

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.12

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Are we getting better at discerning what is God’s will for our lives? We have to stick to the basics of spirit living. The basics are the framework of the greater calling when it is issued. God knows His purpose for our lives. He knows best how to prepare us for meeting that purpose and exceeding our expectations on how best to serve God. As mighty men, we cannot become so fixated on what God wills for our lives as if we are answering that question of our childhood, “What am I going to be when I grow up?” God knows how to reveal that part of our gifting and calling at the moment it is needed. Until then we need to “eat our vegetables, brush our teeth, make our beds, be nice to pets and parents and siblings, do our homework and pray.” So, God’s will for our lives isn’t any more complicated than to love God, love one another, be students of the Word, doers of that Word, sharers of that Word and pray. Paul adds to that list to be “joyful in our hope” and “patient in affliction.” They do seem to go together as we can become very impatient when our hope seems to be unrealized and we can lose our joy when we find ourselves afflicted of body, mind and spirit. But, it is God’s will for our lives that we remain joyful because our hope in Christ is being realized more and more each day and our healing is sealed in the covenant of grace so that our affliction merely becomes an opportunity to praise God. This is why it is God’s will for us to be fervent in our prayer life. Prayer is the means to maintain our joy and our patience. If we stay near to God with prayer then His Word we shall hear that tells us about our hope and what we know now about it as well as to hear His Words of confidence when we are afflicted and how we can be a witness to the peace of God that overcomes all our weaknesses, trials and concerns. Want to know God’s will for your life; then pray without ceasing, giving thanks to God at all times, in all situations and in places.

“Your will be done in the year to come – 2014!”

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.11

“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Our God is a jealous God. He does not want anything to stand between Him and the people He loves. He has demonstrated His love for us by first creating us. This means He had us in mind. We are not an afterthought. We are climax of His creative effort as He considered the heavens and the earth. He further demonstrated His love for us by granting us freewill. It takes great trust to grant the right to choose for themselves what they can do with their lives. It really is one of the greatest gifts of love that can be given because it opens the door of possibility that you will not be loved back. He goes another step further in demonstrating His love for us by forgiving us. Beginning with the transgression of Adam and Eve, God could simply eliminate us from existence for doing wrong. Instead, He gave us forgiveness of our sins, instruction for correction and additional opportunities to do what is right and good in His sight as it should be in our own. But, His love is not limited by the gift of forgiveness. He practices being present in our daily lives so that we will never be alone. A failure to meet expectations usually leads to isolation of one person from another either due to disappointment of the one who had the expectation or the fear of alienation of the other if they did indeed miss the expectation. God promises His eternal presence. But, His love for us does not end there. God put His love into one marvelously and wondrously made package called Jesus Christ. He had us in mind when He sent His only begotten Son into the world in human form so that we could know God’s promise is real. He gave Jesus freewill to do whatever it would take to make life meaningful and restore hope into the world. Jesus chose the cross- the ultimate express of love, self-sacrificing for others. He proclaimed forgiveness from our sins whenever we recognized we had sinned and in that awareness battled with running to God or away from Him. Even one of the names for Jesus is Immanuel which means “God is with us.” In Christ, we know God is with us and if He is with us then no one will be able to stand against us and prevail, including sin and the Enemy of God- Satan. But, God’s effort goes all the way to and beyond the cross. God’s effort to demonstrate our worth and value in love is culminated in grace. Grace is the giving to another something they do not deserve and hindering them from receiving what their actions do deserve. Yes, we have forgiveness of our sins. Yet, their memory lingers still in our heart, mind and soul. But, in grace, the true penalty of our sin which is death is defeated and overcome by Jesus’ sacrifice of His own life as He emptied Himself totally before God and man. He had nothing left to create the miracle of resurrection which would give us true hope. That miracle is the act of God’s love for any and all His children; most especially Jesus!

God has done so much, He has a right to be jealous when we forget His love and take for granted His gifts of life and put other things before God. His jealousy gave birth to His being zealous. He has a true passion and desire to do what is right and good for others. He is a zealous God and the mighty men of God need to understand that and emulate that in their own lives. It is God’s will for our lives to have a zealous fervor for loving one another and serving Him as the One and Only True God. We must have a passion for life- the life of the Kingdom. We must also have a passion for the gospel- the story of our life which began in the image of God and can truly end as God imagines it. It is the same end He has provided for His Son- Jesus!

“Your will be done in the year to come – 2014!”

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.9-10

“ Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

What can be more basic and more important than “love.” Love is the creative element and power behind creation. God is love. In His love there is life, the hope for life and the reconciliation of life. We know the love description written in the letters to the mighty men in Corinth by the Apostle Paul which concludes with “Love never fails.” Other translations use “fades, passes away or ceases.” If God is love, then love is the beginning and the end. Where there is love, there is life and that life bears witness as a light to the entire world. In that light, which is Christ- God’s love gift to humanity, life is prolific in the ways of God bringing abundance to those who love and are loved. Jesus taught the greatest commandment is to love God and one another. This is God’s will. Those who love one another are doing God’s will. If you have any question as to what God’s will is for your life then seek the answer by sharing God’s love with someone who is in need of encouragement, of food, of support, of shelter, of hope, of security, of a friend and of deliverance from evil. Imagine what the world would look like if we lived and breathed the love of our mighty God! What a wonderful world this would be. It isn’t too late, you know. We can and must be a loving people because we have been saved by a loving God for this singular purpose- that we love one another. This is God’s will for all our lives.

“Your will be done in the year to come – 2014!”

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.6-8

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

I am not saying that God is a Nike supporter or that He lounges around the throne of Heaven in Nike Shocks or Air Jordans but I do believe He might be into the Nike hype “Just do it.” Okay, that may be taking it a little far but when it comes to “what is God’s will for my life,” the Apostle Paul promotes “just do it.” As mighty men of God, we are commanded and encouraged to do the will of God each day of our lives. From the very basic breathing to the set aside preaching, teaching and healing God’s mighty men are called to “just do it.” Yes, I know that you may have a question about what it is that God has called you to do. So, let’s start with the basic rule: do all things for the glory of God. So, you may laugh when I said “the very basic function of breathing” as I urge God’s mighty men to do the will of God. Breathing isn’t a choice? No, breathing isn’t a choice but not breathing is. Whether it is cold, allergy and flu season and you feel like you just can’t breathe or the burdens of life seem too unbearable to breathe another moment and live, the choice to breathe is a matter of freewill. So, when y9ou have no clue what God wants you to do- just breathe! Adam and Eve were lifeless forms made from the fabric of the earth until God breathed into them the breath of life in the Spirit. He quite literally “inspired” them to live and then called them to live or Him. It was their choice, however, and they did not choose as wisely as God would have willed Himself. They decided to breathe on their own for their own purpose and understanding of what God wanted them to do. God’s mighty men ought to choose to breathe for God and inspire others with a life lived for no other purpose than to glorify God and follow Him all the days of their lives. When all else is in question, “Take a deep breath and thank God!”

But, breathing means you are alive which opens the door for so many other things you can do for God that is accomplishing His Will for your life in the year to come such as prayer, studying the Word of God, loving one another as God has loved you with Jesus Christ, singing praise and worship songs or sitting by the lake and marveling at another unique sunset and honoring God with your oohs and aahs. It really isn’t difficult to do the basics of God’s will. Starting there can open up other possibilities for knowing what it is God desires for your life. For the moment, let’s “just do it,” the basics and let God lead.

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.6-8

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

When the mighty man of God lives by grace, he is blessed by grace with the abundancy of gifts which are the tools of Christ used to improve the lives of others. I love this gift of grace. Grace is the giving of faith, hope and love from God to man which is dependent solely upon the desire of God to bless His people with life whether they deserve it or not. If it were not for grace, the outpouring of God’s freewill, we would live in a world that is totally dependent upon the rubric of the Law. The rubric of the Law sees only conditions. We must live by conditional love. We must work to gain whatever we have. Our goal is to be above all things- our circumstances, our relationships, even our gods but denying in full effect the God of all. Even the Law of God revealed in the Ten Commandments included only one conditional statement and that was in the instruction of children to honor their parents so that it would go well for them in the days to come. But, let me offer that while God’s love is unconditional, the full extent of what His love can do is limited by our faith and believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We have to believe with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength that God loves us so much that He would send His Son into our world to die for our sins and be raised up on the third day to give us the hope of resurrection.

And when we believe in this love of God and give ourselves to it, we discover the blessing of grace which becomes manifested in gifts of service to the people of God bringing glory to God in all things. And why would God give us these gifts if He did not intend for us to use them. It is His will that we embrace and explore and experience these gifts in our lives in order to bear witness to the world of His great love for us all. As we mature into the mighty men called is calling us to be, we will only do those things which will glorify and honor the name and reality of God.

“Your will be done in the year to come – 2014!”

HIS WORD for Today:

Romans 12.3

“ For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

If there is any singular example of the transformation that can take place which images the move from law to grace it would be the Apostle Paul. As Saul, the zealous Pharisee who sought to eliminate any foreign infection of philosophy and theology from the body of Judaism, the Christian movement was under constant threat. There was no doubt of his faithfulness to what he believed. He was a powerful and feared enemy of the Church and an ally of the Temple. He had so much influence that the Temple leadership gave him permission to hunt down, arrest, imprison and even eliminate Christ followers. Saul was very good at what he did because he believed in the Word of God and in the ideology of the Pharisees. But, on the Damascus Road, filled with his own righteous indignation, Saul was confronted by the Resurrected Christ. Saul’s problem was that he had no prior experience with Christ outside of the teachings of Jesus’ apostles and their disciples. Blinded by the glory of God which shone in Jesus Christ, Saul was given what many others only prayed to receive- the Word of the Lord. God spoke to him through Jesus. Others only heard thunder ad murmurings as they stayed a distance from Saul until he called for them. When they approached him they found him was blind. But, as in the words of the beloved hymn “Amazing Grace,” he was blind but now could see.

What could he see? He could see that living by the law and all its adherents was fallible and futile. Living by the Law put limitations on the experience of life. In the Pharisees efforts to limit the life of a believer so they could not transgress the law, they limited the work of God that could be done in them. They thought more highly of themselves than they should have. Instead of limiting works they should have been busy doing to the works of God as did Jesus Christ. They were not bound to God in their religion. They had turned the Law into their religion; the Torah became their god. So, it as out of personal experience that Paul of Jesus, the former Saul of Tarsus, urged the Church to abide not by the visions they had of themselves in Christ but by the Christ who had restored their vision of life in God. This was the will of God which He fully intended to manifest through the Church as the body of Christ, His only Son. And the will of God is for us to consider our thoughts, actions and lives according to faith above the Law.

Is the Law invalid? As Paul declares, “By no means.” But, the Law is a glimpse into what life would look like if we remain faithful to God alone who is best envisioned for us by Jesus Christ. Instead, it is a life of grace which has been revealed to us that becomes the “rule” for our lives. Living in grace is the will of God.
