Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Luke 13.10-13

“On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues. There was a woman who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and not able to straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, He called her forward and said to her, ‘Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.’ Then He put His hands on her and immediately she straightened up and praised God.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

When Jesus prayed over His disciples during the Passover celebration on the night He would be betrayed, He asked that God bless those who were with them. His desire was for them to be one with Him as He was one with God. Indeed, when we confess Jesus as the Christ of our lives and Messiah of the world, accept Him as our Lord and Savior and enter into newness of life believing in Him, we are made a new creation. Stop and consider this new creation we are as mighty men of God. We were not physically reborn, which we know from Nicodemus, but we are changed by the renewal of our minds. This new creation means that we are something the world had not seen before Jesus but has seen plenty since. These new creations are gifted and blessed through the Holy Spirit by God. It was through the Holy Spirit that the world, its life and all of creation to the reaches of the universe was created. It was that Holy Spirit which flowed through God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son that existed in us just waiting for the spark of recognition to begin a chain reaction of power, dominion and authority in and through the believers’ life. Yes, I am saying, when we walk in Christ and allow Christ to walk in us- we can do what Jesus did.

In the gospel of Luke we see an episode of spirit demonstration which was used to speak of what Jesus did on the Sabbath as if Sabbath was the theme because the Sadducees and Pharisees would use this argument against Jesus as a violation of the covenental law of God “Keep the Sabbath holy- do not labor.” But, is it work if what we are doing is something we love because it does good in the lives of others? But, I do not read a story about a “wrong” thing Jesus did. Instead, I see the “right” thing which Jesus did out of His compassion and love for His creations. Yes, all things were created through Him. Just as the Holy Spirit flowed in Him, it flowed through Him as a life-giving river of faith, hope and love. It was as if the Holy Spirit needed permission from Jesus to perform this work of love- creation. Can you imagine that even in the moment of conception Jesus knew He would lay down His life for it so that it would become all it was supposed to be- a new creation fit for life on earth and Heaven? Jesus consented to our lives knowing that we through Him would have life and have it eternally and abundantly? Imagine it because that is the reality of love!

It was this love that Jesus exercised that Sabbath day in a synagogue for a woman He had known before she was born. How He must have grieved to see how sin had changed her life into something it was not meant to be. Yet, in spite of her physical condition she remained faithful to God- she was worshipping in the synagogue. She remained a believer. She did not lose faith. She did not give up hope. She did not stop loving God. Nor did God lose sight of her. Jesus saw her just as she was and rejoiced in her courage to remain faithful all these years. She responded when He called her forward and her delivered her from evil putting life into the prayer declaration He had taught His disciples. But it was not just Jesus it was and is the Jesus in us when we walk by faith and not by sight. See with His Spirit and act with His desire and you, too, can usher into the kingdom of God these new creations waiting to be born again in spirit and in truth. Mighty men of God- let’s make every day a Sabbath day and keep it holy by doing labors of love which we would love to do and will do in Jesus’ name!

2 Kings 11.2-3

“But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes, who were about to be murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah so he would not be killed. He remained there six years in the temple of the Lord while Athaliah ruled the land and worshiped Baal.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

If you find this a curious verse for us to learn from then keep this in mind “what is hidden shall be revealed” which Jesus taught and was recorded in the gospels. Think back through the stories of some of God’s mighty men and you will find times in their lives when they had been hidden: Moses in a reed basket, David in caves, even Jesus in Egypt. So, it should not surprise us that even here we find one who would be king of Israel was hidden in order to protect his life from evildoers. On his seventh birthday, Joash was revealed by the high priest of Israel and anointed king. He led a rebuilding of the temple and the destruction of Baal worship there.

So what does that have to do with God’s mighty men today? We must understand that what is hidden will be revealed; from secret sins to great revelations. If you are feeling as if your value and ministry remains hidden then it quite possibly is. Your time of great service has not come and when it does God will reveal you to others and that value will add much to the people whom you will lead and serve. Equally, if you have not confessed your deepest sin, which is already known to God, then it will be revealed and the shame of it which is already at work in you will have a greater harm on those around you who believed and trusted in you. God can still provide healing and restoration but it is so much easier when we reveal it to God and seek His mercy than to bear the sorrow of unrepented sin which can lead to death!

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

2 Samuel 23.15-17

“David longed for water and said, ‘Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!’ So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate and carried it back to David. But, he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord. ‘Far be it from me, O Lord, to do this!’ he said. ‘Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?’ And David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

You may already have figured out where the designation of this devotional site came from in our biblical study; perhaps you had not. Either way, you now know that it was patterned from those mighty men of David, including David himself. What made them mighty was their allegiance to David in every season of his life. Their commitment was beyond measure and reflected David’s own fielty to Almighty God, maker of Heaven and earth. This one story of Josheb-Basshebeth, Eleazar the Ahoite and Shammah the Hararite was indicative of their love for David and support of him as their king. They risked life and limb to meet a wish David had for water drawn from a well outside the gate of Bethlehem. Bethlehem, at the time, was occupied by Israel’s oft enemy- the Philistines. But, it was not a wish for peace nor was it a wish for battle strategy. It was not a wish of wisdom or revelation from the Lord. It was not a life-changing moment he sought which would alter the course of history. It was not an order nor a command. It was a statement made between four confidants who had shared life and death together in the battle to keep Israel strong and united. It may have been more of an aside from a weary warrior who longed for some respite in the days and years of battle spoken in the midst of a conversation about their hometowns. Regardless of what it was, these three mighty men took it as an opportunity to demonstrate their love and affection for their king. They believed their actions would bring comfort to the friend, ally and fellow mighty man of God. They did not consider the risk to their own lives but only of what it would mean to David.

David had no idea of what they had decided to do. When they returned with the water drawn from the well, he recognized how compelling his word could be in the lives of those who loved him. He refused to drink the water meaning no shame to the mighty men but honor before God for their willingness to sacrifice their own lives for such a selfish desire. He was honored by their willingness to sacrifice themselves for what they believed was a token of their love and appreciation for David. He was humbled by how these and others would respond to the words he would declare in any circle of life. Perhaps, he also felt ashamed that these would love him so much and his thoughtless expression was turned into a command.

What can this say to the mighty men of God today?

First, how strong of a relationship do we have with one another. Does it reflect our passion to love one another as we love God and as God loves us? Does it speak of a bond of fellowship and relationship that even a simple request that is spoken as an aside could be perceived as one that would bring fulfillment, peace and comfort for a friend? Jesus declared, “There is no greater love than this that a man would lay down his life for another.” Are we willing to die to bring a drink of beloved water to a suffering friend, neighbor or stranger?

Second, are we open to service at every level of our lives? As leaders we are also followers and as followers we are also mortal men. No one is exempt from the needs and passions of the body as they are not exempt from the fruits and compassions of the spirit. No mighty man of God stops being a man because they have committed themselves to the service of the Lord. Jesus asked for water even on the cross just as He did at the Samaritan well. He did not make this request just to create a learning opportunity and lead others to a renewed relationship with God. Jesus was thirsty. He needed rest. He needed food. He needed companions and compatriots. He needed God. Yet, He also served. He knelt at the feet of His disciples and washed their feet with living water. He feed them mightily with simple bread and a few fish. He rescued them from danger. He made them laugh and joined them in the dance. Jesus, as the mightiest man of God, was a man as much as He was God. That means God desires to serve us as much as He desires our willingness to serve others as worship to Him.

That leads to a third observation which has to do with our words. We, like David, ought to be careful of our words because we do not know the power they can have on others. There are those in our lives who would be willing to sacrifice their all just for our comfort and happiness even in the simplest and seemingly selfish requests. Our words have power because of our relationship with them in the thick of life, death and daily walk as well as our relationship with Almighty God. We must be careful that we do not lead others to belief our every wish is a command. Yet, equally, we must be listeners as were the mighty men of David whose ears were not only the pipeline to mind and spirit but to their heart and soul. Are we listening to what others are saying? Are we focusing on the background message as a cry for help, comfort and salvation? Most of all are we listening with discernment for the Word of the Lord- not just the lord and master of our home and hearth. Jesus declared to the Temptor, “Man does not live by bread alone (nor by a cup of water) but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

These mighty men were mighty because they believed in the Word of God which was alive in David. We can do no worse!

Psalm 1.1-3

“Blessed in the one who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way sinners do or sit in the seat of mockers. His delight is in the law of the Lrd, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water yielding its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Our delight should be in the supernatural laws of God. The psalmist is not talking about the Ten Commandments when he describes the blessed and mighty man. While we should take heed of the Ten Commandments and the kingdom description of reality if faith were fully employed, the psalmist wants the listener to understand the awe of how God works. We know of the laws of nature, Newton’s Laws, the laws of mathematics, the laws of medicine and others. The word “law” stands for truth. It is sometimes beyond our description and ability to understand how something happens but we certainly see that it happens and we can fairly well predict it. The blessed and mighty man does not succumb to conventional wisdom, popular opinion or manmade arguments for loopholes. Instead, the blessed and mighty man contemplates, seeks out and adopts the truths of God as his own. You can see this truth revealed when the leaders of the temple and the Pharisees confronted Jesus with the question “Which is the greatest commandment?” Isn’t that the way of mortal men? The consuming drive to be the greatest is deep-rooted in not what we can accomplish or get away with but what we can accuse others of not doing. What the leaders that day wanted was justification of their own opinion. What they were asking for was a lowering of the bar so they could set themselves above Jesus if he disagreed with them. I believe most people would believe the first commandment would be the greatest and the root of all truths among the ten. But, in reality they all hinge together.

But, you have to love Jesus’ answer because it truly is the best answer to the question. He gave them the ultimate truth as it relates to what we can do with our own lives to move them toward greatness. His truth preceded the covenant of the law which was given to Moses. His truth was bound in the covenant of faith given to Abraham. That is why it is a truth against which no law can stand. You cannot legalize that truth nor enforce it with other laws. Remember what that truth is which Jesus declared was the greatest commandment? “You should love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind. Similarly, you should love your neighbor as you yourself are loved by God.” Isn’t that the truth? Isn’t it the bedrock and foundation of our relationship with God and God’s with us? And does it not make sense that Jesus is the essence of that truth set as the cornerstone of God’s building up the Church, the community of the faith-filled and the faithful? If we love God and one another in the way God loves, then the rest of lie is a snap. Or, as the psalmist declared, “whatever is done by the blessed and mighty man will prosper.”

Genesis 28.20-22

“Then Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the Lord will be my God and this that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will return to you a tenth.'”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Have you been following the leading of the Spirit in this study? Our dreams are vehicles through which God speaks. The pillow we lay on is blessed because it gives us comfort to relax into God’s presence trusting in tomorrow when it is not yet here. Of course, the rock we truly rest upon and trust in is nothing more and nothing less than Jesus Christ and His righteousness. Are you singing yet, “Christ alone- Cornerstone”? Praise God for loving us this much that on our journey toward the future in Him that we are pursuing, He is not the ends but the means of that future. When we set in place the cornerstone of Christ we have begun to build the House of God of which we all are a part. Your house. Your home. Your business. Your transportation. Your children. Your friends. Your spouse. Your neighbors. Your relationships. Your recreation. Are they all anointed in prayer with the oil of righteousness? Are they committed to the Word and Will of God?

Reread the vow of Jacob. It really isn’t a conditional statement saying “If you, then I.” Actually, it is a praise statement that celebrates the promise of God secured by believing in His provision in our lives. It is an anticipation statement of God’s presence on the journey with watchful care and provision with the purpose of returning Jacob home again to demonstrate he had fulfilled his father’s desire and secure the blessing given to him as it was given to Isaac. His response to this acknowledgment was to be the Church. His tithe represented his desire to show thanksgiving for all God will do. He was not paying for services rendered but paying it forward. Our giving is an investment in the future because our God is a God of the future who has allowed our past to pass. Our past is dead but our future is alive in Christ!

How are we responding to the future goodness of God? Or are we glad enough to just be here today? Be forward thinking and God pursuing. His Kingdom is in our midst but the fulfillment of the Kingdom is coming.

Genesis 28.18-19

“Early the next morning Jacob took the stone which he had used as a pillow to lay his head on to sleep and poured oil on top of it. He called that place Bethel (House of God) though it used to be called Luz.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

You have heard the phrase, “I am going to have to sleep on it.” It really is good advice and a good strategy whose purpose is to not rush into making a decision. Having the time to pause and reflect and, as Shakespeare once said “perchance to dream,” gives a clearer perspective on what lies ahead. So, let me extend the metaphor and ask, “Have you slept on the rock?” Jacob found a rock by the creekside of suitable shape and size to use as a pillow. I say Jacob had to be really tired to sleep on a rock. But, what if the rock is Jesus? Jesus is the Rock of our Salvation. He is the stone which the builders rejected that could have squared their faith and future with God’s Word and Will. What if we took time to rest in Jesus with our decisions for the future? Would it make a difference? I have no doubt that if we prayed about our decisions before we went to sleep and surrendered our will in the matter to Jesus Christ, He would reveal to us what is needed. He might even provide us a vision of the future as His Father did for Jacob. God certainly wants to communicate His Will into our lives. Most of all He wants us to find our rest in Him, to trust Him in all things and to worship Him with gladness and confidence. Maybe we need to find a good rock to lay our head on or better maybe we need to sleep on the Word of God and wake refreshed and infused with His presence in our own Bethel!

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Genesis 28.16-17

“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.’ He was struck by fear and trembling and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Have you dreamed about God? Has He appeared to you in your dreams? Many mighty men of God have been ministered to in dreams and many others have received their commissioning to serve and worship God in and through their dreams. What is awesome is that they believed in the power and truth of those dreams. I love the words of Jacob following his experience of God through this dream in what he would declare was “Bethel,” the House of God. Under the stars, by flowing water, he took a stone as his pillow and rested. In the middle of what some might say was nowhere, God appeared to Jacob. He wasn’t expecting it but he did not dispute it. Scripture says he feared it when did not mean he was afraid as if he saw something scary but feared it with awe and wonder. He was striken by the reality and presence of God where he did not think he would experience Him.

Where exactly do we think we will find God? Is God not everywhere? If He is with us is He not everywhere we are at the very least? And if He is with us are we not with Him? Then shouldn’t our every word and deed become the declaration of the worship of the One True God and we become the leaders of worship where others may not be expecting to see and find God for their own lives? And when we experience God in any place do we declare that place to be a house of God not just for a day but for an eternity? How many houses of worship has God revealed to us? Are we not missionaries of God in the name of Jesus Christ preaching the good news and setting at liberty those who have been held captive in body, mind and spirit? Have we taken our journey of faith too lightly? How transformed the world can be if we turn all of these places into houses of worship and praise God with a mighty and sincere voice! Receive the challenge today, mighty men of God, and rejoice in the House of the Lord where we shall dwell forever with Him in spirit and in truth.

Mark 1.38-39

“Jesus replied, ‘Let us go somewhere else- to the nearby villages- so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.’ So they travelled throughout Galilee with Jesus as He preached in their synagogues and drove out demons.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

If you really wonder what your purpose is as a mighty man of God it is to be like Jesus. He is in you and you are called to be in Him. You have accepted His invitation not only to receive the forgiveness of sin and the blessing of eternal life but to be aligned with Jesus Christ today as He was two thousand years ago. His thoughts are to be your thoughts. His ways are to be your ways. His work is to be your work. Regardless of your vocation, you are to preach the good news. Remember, the disciples had a variety of vocations as well but their primary purpose was to preach Christ! With the words of our mouths, the meditations of our hearts and the works of our hands we proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ who was raised from the dead on the third day and restored to His Heavenly perfection so that we might know the gospel is true. It is true then that we are to go into all the world and preach the good news, making disciples in and of all nations and so have dominion, power and authority to bind and to loose, setting the captive of body, mind and spirit free to fulfill their purpose as well. This is why Jesus came and this is what our purpose is as mighty men of God committed to following Jesus all the days of our lives.

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Mark 1.23-26

“Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you to come to destroy us? I know who you are- the Holy One of God!’ Jesus replied sternly, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Are you surprised? No, not that an evil spirit would quickly obey the command of the Son of God and leave the possessed man whom had been tormented for God knows how long. No, are you surprised that the members of the synagogue would allow a possessed, mean spirited man in their synagogue? How many church families would allow demon-possessed people in their church doors? How many create an aura and culture of “no sinners welcome”? As we read through the gospels and into the letters of Paul it seems that there is an inundation of evil-spirited possessed children of God. They are everywhere. No place seems exempt from their presence except for the place where the Spirit of God under the authority of Jesus Christ is present. But, it is not the person who is not welcome; it is the evil spirit.

Love the person; cast out the evil, forgive the sin! This is the culture of the Church; at least it is supposed to be. Jesus did not even drive away the Pharisees and rulers of the Temple. He wanted to drive out their false beliefs, misguided practices and confused ideas. All of these rise up from the presence of the Evil One who seeks to confuse and disrupt the peace and righteousness of God which is a blessing poured out upon His people. Jesus wants to gather us under His sheltering wing. His desire for mercy and grace is like an umbrella protecting us from the “rain of chaos.” As mighty men of God we must be able to separate the sin from the sinner including that powerful assessment of our own lives. What if someone did not take the time to speak honestly about our sins and misguided logic and with love call us into accountability and into grace? We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. There are times when we still stumble and fall short. But, there is always someone who under the authority of Jesus Christ who speaks love, sometimes tough love, into our lives and calls us back into right thinking and right action. We are to love God’s people- each and every one. Sometimes it may be tougher to do but if it was always easy then would we consistently do it?

As we have been overwhelmed by the presence of many tragedies this past week from Boston to Iraq/Pakistan to West, Texas, to Sichua, China, to Colorado, we see ordinary people responding in extraordinary ways. No one is exempt from the move of the spirit to mete out compassion and reconciliation. Speak sternly to those who purpose is to disrupt progress, peace and prosperity and command the evil to depart. Speak powerfully in love to provide the healing and restoration that is needed. But, most of all, speak as Christ spoke often so that the Word of God could be heard as a new teaching with great authority and power that even the Evil One and his manifestations cannot ignore, deny or remain in God’s presence.

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Matthew 22.29,30,33

“Jesus replied, ‘You (Sadducees) are in error because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.’ When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

It should be no surprise to God’s mighty men that Jesus should know more than men on earth. He is the Son of God who sat and is sitting at the right hand of God. I say “sat” because in obedience to His Father, Jesus stepped down from His throne in Heaven to put on the mantel of flesh on earth. He “set” aside all things so that He might bring life and truth into the world as a blessing on all those God loves. But, in His obedience, God favored Him with life because God is a God of the living and not the dead.

Death comes in the error of our thinking as with the knowledge of man which questions the existence and purpose of God. Some may call this “stinkin’ thinkin'” but I prefer to say it is “shrinking thinking.” In the effort of men to shrink God they actually reduce themselves. If our thinking becomes small then little makes sense. Some may scoff and say “faith makes little sense because it believes only one thing.” Faith indeed means only one thing and that is “There is only God alone as the truth needed for my life.” But, by believing in this God, having faith in His Word and His Son, so much more becomes apparent to us. In that faith, we receive what Jesus desires to give to us- life eternal empowered by all dominion, power and authority.

As mighty men of God, we should not be astonished at the teachings of Jesus when they stand in contrast to conventional wisdom. Nor should we be in error because we do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. Our very lives are scripturally strenthened and defined empowered by the Holy Spirit, God’s ultimate power in love. Seek out His truth in His Word and discover the power of life. Proclaim His truth and stand against the false teachings of men who want to shrink God and others in order to magnify themselves.
