Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Matthew 28.5-7

“The angel [sitting on the rolled away stone of Jesus’ tomb] said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified and entombed here. But, He is not here; He has been raised up from the dead just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay then go quickly and tell His disicples: He has been raised up from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ No, go as I have told you.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Outside of “Jesus is raised from the dead!”, I believe the most powerful statement, actually a command, at Easter for every mighty man of God is “Come and see; Go and tell!” We will find houses of worship filled with those who will come and see how the Church will celebrate Easter again for another year. It is a story that never grows old. The good guy, a seeming underdog, rises victoriously over death and His enemies and lives again empowering His disciples, men and women, to become the bearers of a good news with a great joy to all the world. We want everyone- followers, marginal followers, seekers and skeptics- to come and see the body of Christ lifted up and lifting up the hope of the world. Scripture fulfilled in their very sight. We want them to see the power of the resurrection and the hope it gives to those who have experienced and are experiencing the throes of death in any number of ways. It is not a story of the past but an epic of contemporary proportions. It is a message of passion, emotion, humility and peace. It thrills the body, challenges the mind and lifts up the soul of every man, woman and child. It is the truth revisited and the truth that never dies. It is the power, dominion and authority of God shared with all who will believe, trust and obey.

What are we to believe, trust and obey? The angel declares to the women who came to the tomb ready to tackle the task of morning the most loved man they ever knew. But, the angel interrupts their mourning with a command to become evangelists. Who more marginalized can there be in the days of Jesus outside of the physically incapacitated? Yes, women. But, they would take the lead of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. How does that speak to the mighty men of God? It speaks of renewed and restored relationships- the uniting of men and women as equal partners in the work of Christ. While the disciples couched in fear hid in the upper room, the women made their way to the garden tomb. There they were surprised by grace! Wisdom was born in their lives and now it would be borne by them to the disciples (affirmed by Jesus Himself on the way!) Mighty men of God, we cannot be fearful of what the world might say about our passion for Jesus. We must invite the world to come and see, believe, then go and tell others of this great news! It is time for the mighty men of God to lay aside our low key and take up the keys of the Kingdom which flesh and blood has not revealed to us. Jesus is the Christ. He is the Son of the Living God. He is not dead. We do not need to be afraid. He has been raised from the dead as He said. He lives again to empower us to be bearers of the gospel truth that lives beyond the empty cross and the empty tomb. There is more than hope for life; there is truth! We need to go out into all the world and make disciples of and in all nations of the world. We are to be preachers of the truth, teachers of the love and baptizers of the newborn in faith. We are to be encouragers of the found, mentors of the welcome and sustainers of those who commit themselves to living out this new life in Christ. What do we have to fear or worry about? Jesus said death would not overcome Him and it is true. If this is true then everything else He said should be true as well for us. We walk by faith and by sight. We see and are seen in Christ. We cannot lag behind; we must take the lead. Life is a gift too precious to wait on our understanding of appropriate or opportune moments. Life must be lived now! Come and see; then go and tell. Go tell it on the mountains, the ruling places of the world. Go tell it on the mountains where many have run to retreat and wait. Go tell it over the hills where others lived that you have not met as in the days of Adam and Eve. Go tell it everywhere- to the neighbor, the stranger, the enemy. Don’t do it because I said so. Do it because the angel of the Lord told the women, but don’t do it just because of that. Do it because Jesus said it as well that we might all see Him and know the acceptable day of the Lord has come!

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Matthew 22.41-46

“While the Pharisees were still gathered together [considering Jesus’ teaching on the resurrection and the greatest commandment], Jesus asked them, ‘What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is He?’ They replied with confidence, ‘The son of David.’ Jesus asked further, ‘How then is it that David, speaking by the Spirit of God, call the Messiah, Lord?’ For he says in the psalms ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.’ If then David calls the Messiah ‘Lord,” how can He be His son?’ No one could say a word in reply and from that day forward no one dared to ask Him any more questions.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

When Jesus took His disciples to the highlands north of Caesera Philippi, He asked them “Who do men say that I am?” There were the obligatory answers reflecting their cultural heritage and understanding of the prophets such as John the Baptist or one of the prophets. Then Jesus looked at Peter and asked, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” When Jesus was brought before Caiaphas, the teachers of the Law and the chief priests He was charged under oath before the living God to tell them if He was the Messiah, the One of God. He answered plainly, “You have said it so yourselves and in the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One coming on the clouds of heaven.”

There is no commentary needed for these mighty words about Christ and of Christ. Their truth stands self-evident on their own. Prophets and kings of old knew of this truth as it was revealed to them by the Spirit of God and they recorded it in their own words as statements of their belief and hope for the future. Wise men from distant lands read those words and believed on them and followed His Star to the place where He was born and adored Him as King of the Jews. Men hungering and thirsting for righteousness, liberation, healing, meaning, purpose and most of all-love listened to His teachings and observed all that He had done and knew He was the Messiah, the Christ, the One of God and they followed Him. Now for generations countless mighty men have kept the faith and acted upon it as goodwill ambassadors of God in Jesus’ name to fulfill the great commission up to and through this very day which we call Good Friday as we remember His sacrificial death on the cross of Calvary so that the truth might live on in each of us forever.

My question is simply put to you, mighty men of God: “Who do you say that He is and how do you say it?” Let us declare with a loud and confident voice, “He is the Messiah, the Christ, the Holy One of God who takes away the sting of death and the power of sin over His people! Glory to God in the highest. Hosanna, Jesuah, Emmanuel, Jesus the Christ, our Lord and Savior forever!

ABIDING IN HIS PRESENCE THROUGH PRAYER:

Father, we cannot pause with closed eyes thinking upon this day in Your Son’s life and not see what He was willing to endure and suffer because He so loved us all. Even if we were to keep our eyes open, our minds are etched with the image of His bruised, battered, shredded and pierced body hanging on the cross losing every ounce of His blood so that we might be anointed with the fullest blessing of life. Our ears ring with His cries of forgiveness and mercy as He gasps for each breath not to sustain His life but to bless ours. Tears well up even now as if it were today and we are saddened and sorely ashamed that it had to come to this. But, it has and now there shall be no more tears, no more crying, no more dying a death that lasts forever. We rejoice in His Name that because of this great love we have been saved and called sons of the Most High God. Father, we thank you out of an inability to repay this debt of gratitude we owe save to commit ourselves to keeping the truth of this day purely and wholly alive for generations to come until He returns to claim us for His very own in Spirit and in Truth. Amen.

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Matthew 22.11-14

“The king came in to see the guests and he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless as the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ Jesus added, ‘Many are invited but few are chosen.'”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Are you like me at this moment rereading this Word for today? I can understand the gist of the lesson and see the applications of it by the glad inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I can embrace the basic understanding that even if we are of meager circumstances, sinners, street people, strangers, good people from everyday walks of life and the like, we cannot just come as we are to the wedding feast. We must demonstrate some awareness of the moment of being welcomed in and act accordingly. The wedding feast is the gathering of the people of God to receive the blessing of the fulfillment of the covenant of love- God’s love for all people. It doesn’t mean we have to be all dressed like the chief priests and Pharisees who wore long robes, great phylacteries, jewelry and extravagant prayer shawls. It doesn’t mean we must be “all about that.” But, it does mean we must have a sense of the moment and show our awareness of it and its difference from any other event in the world. But, if we think that life in the kingdom is to be a reflection of life in the world then Heaven will be a sorry place and our God would be a sorry God. No, the opposite must be true! Life in this world must be a reflection of life in the Kingdom of Heaven so that this world will not be a sorry place to live and God will be known as a mighty, loving God. There just is no comparison.

It isn’t a call to hypocrisy even though we can see enough of it in the community of faith today. As mighty men of God we cannot live a life of two natures- one inside the Church where we worship and serve God with our tithes, offerings and thanksgiving to God for His saving grace in Jesus Christ and the other outside of the Church where we compromise our faith statements in order to keep jobs, friends, power and position serving another master. Jesus cried out in the Temple, “You cannot serve two masters, God and mammon, for you will love the one and hate the other.” No, mighty men of God we are called to serve a mighty, loving God in mighty and loving ways. It may seem ordinary to those within the body but it will seem to be a miracle in the world. It is time again for the world to see miracles- the works rising up out of a mighty and loving relationship with our God! It is time we be authentic and live as if we understand the primacy of this moment given to us.

If we do not then the consequence is obvious to Jesus- we will be thrown out of the Wedding Banquet and miss the wondrous blessings of the fulfillment of the covenant of love. God’s grace is sufficient but His patience for tolerance can only endure a season- the season where Jesus is with us until the end of this age of the Church. We do want to see the age yet to come from the positive perspective of His reign of peace for a thousand years and ten thousand beside. I am good with all of that and really see how powerful a message it was in the days of Jesus as He spoke to God’s people including the chief priests and Pharisees. I was having trouble with Jesus added word about invited and chosen because it seems a little inconsistent, harsh and maybe out of place. I was until I began to think through the purposes of this lesson here with you. It now makes sense to me that we are all invited to be a part of the greatest love story ever told. But, just being invited in to witness the story and never becoming a part of it will not keep us in the story. There is a “rest of the story” even in grace. We all have been forgiven but if we do not receive the forgiveness and demonstrate a changed nature then what good does forgiveness do in and through our lives? We have all be given the opportunity for a changed nature, clean heart, renewed spirit and a transformed mind but if we do not embrace the change then what change is there? Yes, mighty men of God, we are all called to be different than we have been in the world. It isn’t about what we wear or possess that makes us worthy in the Kingdom of God, that is worldly thinking. It is about being clothed in His glory and grace and possessing the fruit of the Spirit as we are possessed and chosen by God to receive it. But, if all we do is receive the invitation and just assume the “look and see” and graze from the banquet table as if we were wedding crashers without the intent of becoming a full part of the fulfillment of the covenant of love then we will be cast out. So, it seems, that chosenness has two parts: one, being chosen by God; and two, choosing ourselves, therefore, to serve the Lord our God. Woe to those who are no better than chief priests, scribes and Pharisees who have not chosen to prepare themselves appropriately for receiving the glory of our Coming King!

ABIDING IN HIS PRESENCE THROUGH PRAYER:

Father, we do not want to be left in the dark and outside the fullness of Your love where mercy and grace abounds and the blessings for life are abundant. But, most of all, Father, we do not want to miss being a part of the greatest love story ever told and made real in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. We pray for continued wisdom in preparing others to do more than receive the invitation; we want them to choose life, the changed life which can only be known in Your great love. May it be evident in us today and always. Amen.

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Matthew 22.8-10

“The king said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. Go to the street corners and invite anyone you find to the banquet.’ So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find- both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Who are you inviting to the wedding hall at the command of God for His Son, Jesus, and His Son’s Bride, the Church? This lesson is placed during the last week of Jesus’ earthly ministry so its meaning is not about wedding courtesy 101. It is about who are God’s mighty men to bring in to be a part of the greatest love story ever told. It is a story that had been revealed many times to any number of people, but especially to the Jewish people and more especially to their leadership of kings, rabbis, prophets and priests. Yet, those people, the leadership in particular, just didn’t seem to embrace the vast importance and blessing this invitation represented. I pray, mighty men of God, that the same will not be said for this generation. Take heed from the story of the wise and foolish virgins who heard the bridegroom was coming but had not yet arrived. They did not want to miss the wedding and so they planned to stay awake until he came. However, only the wise were truly prepared because they had brought enough oil to kindle their flame through the night (or nights) and thus illumine their vigil. But, the foolish ones acted in haste and with little foresight. They just rushed out ill-prepared and when the time came for the moment of truth they were found asleep in the dark. We may not know the hour nor the day when Jesus will return, mighty men of God, but we do know the meaning of these stories.

1) We must be prepared at all times for His arrival. What is most important is not that we have the bags packed to be ready but that we are ready at all times. He may not come when we say. In fact, we can pray “Come, Lord Jesus” and He will but only in God’s perfect timing. We may see situations and call them signs of the times and lament because Jesus has not come or take comfort in saying “When Jesus comes, He….” But, the truth is that we have been given the business of the Son to continue to do while He is away preparing the House for His bride of which we are a part. Yes, the bride must maintain Her vigil of faithfulness in purity and righteousness as we as maintain Her purpose of raising up each generation of God’s people to be faithful at all times. It isn’t really a matter of when Jesus comes but how will He find us when He comes!

2) If we are not faithful to the call of being disciples of Christ and continuing to carry out the mission left for His disciples to go into all the world and making disciples in and of all nations with the power, dominion and authority imbued to us by the Risen Christ and passed down through the ages, then we will be like those who were foolish. We will slumber in the darkness of our doubt, despair and defeat. We will not be fueled by faith, hope and love because we have measured our time, purpose and worth according to the standards of the world in which we live ignoring the Kingdom of which we are called to be a part. If we choose to dwell in the darkness of apathy and false hopes, then the light of life will be lost to us and we will be left outside of the great wedding banquet where the glory of God will be revealed in all its fullness. We must therefore make disciples, mentor them into the full measure and stature of Jesus Christ, the bridegroom Himself, because we know what He expects in those with whom He desired a relationship with so much that He laid down His life for them that they would not slumber or sleep but be fully awake in spirit and truth ready for His return.

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Matthew 21.43,44

“Therefore I tell you that the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. The one who falls on the stone [which the builder rejected which is now set as the cornerstone] will be broken to pieces; and the one on whom it falls will be crushed.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

The measure of mighty men of God comes first in their obedience to believe that Jesus is the Christ, Son of the Living God, and act it out with love toward one another as our Lord has taught. In so doing, the mighty men of God will be measured by the fruitfulness of their lives as they reach out to the world with compassion. Too many people want to measure their value by money, power and public opinion. Yet, those who are in Christ are already made heirs of the Kingdom of God which cannot be bought, overtaken or opened by the word of men. No, the mighty men of God are already rich beyond measure in ways the world cannot understand. They are power-filled with the Holy Spirit and strong enough to bind the strong man with a word, set the enemy to flee and bring healing to those who are struggling mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Using these blessings will result in producing a harvest of faith, hope and love so great that people will believe that the Kingdom of God is coming on earth. Love is not something you can buy, force into ownership or call into being with mere words. Love is a richness, a power and a reality that has its inward being in faith and its outward nature in service to the people of the world so they will know that God is love. Those who make this love known have built their lives on the firm foundation which is established with Christ as the cornerstone. Those who cannot accept Him and the life which He has given in spirit and in truth will find that cornerstone as a stumbling block in their path to authentic living. Further, Jesus declares that if that cornerstone would fall on them they would be crushed.

I tried to understand how that would happen and then the Spirit reminded me of the image of those who believed themselves to be the cornerstone of the communities of which we are a part- home, business, church, government and the world. They are not the cornerstone. The hope of the people cannot rest on them nor is it centered on them. Christ alone is the cornerstone and those who cannot see that and allow Him to take first place in their lives will find themselves buried beneath it as crushed rock. Align yourselves with Christ who is the Rock of our salvation. Be fitted together by faith, hope and love at the ground floor and find yourselves built up to the full measure and stature of Christ for the glory of God.

“Early in the morning [the day after His triumphant entry], as He was on His way back to the city, He was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the, He went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. He said to it, ‘May you never bear fruit again’ and immediately the tree withered. Jesus replied to the disciples, ‘I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was doen to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea’ and it will be done.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Do you know, mighty men of God, how to not doubt? It is by love. True love for one another and for God leaves no room for doubt. Doubt exists because of the fear to love and be loved. What human beings really want most is to be loved- there is no doubt about that. But, in a world of sin, the fear that love will be withheld is real and devastating. We then turn love relationships, even with God, into conditional ones which is the evidence of doubt. What we want is a guarantee that we will be loved. Yet, the only guarantee we will be loved is when we love one another and believe that God loves us. How do we know that God loves us when we recognize the truth about His Son, Jesus our Christ, who loved His Father and us so much He surrendered His life on our behalf. He had no doubt this was the Way, the Truth and the Life. He knew it was love and so He determined to manifest love for us so that we would know God always loved us and would never stop loving us. But, if we are not manifesting that love ourselves in all the relationships that pass through our sphere of influence then we are expressing doubt.

If we doubt, then we feel left out. Look at the story of Thomas. He is called doubting Thomas because he asked to see the wounded resurrected Jesus- the nail scars in His hands or wrists and the wounded side where the Roman spear pierced His flesh. But, Thomas did not doubt that Jesus was resurrected. Thomas doubted that Jesus loved him less than He did the rest of the disciples. You see, Thomas was not present when Jesus appeared to the rest. What Thomas wanted was what everyone else had. It was conditional in nature but faithful at its heart. If Jesus loves me, too, He would not leave me out of the healing of my heart, mind, soul and spirit. Of course Jesus would not leave Thomas out. He hasn’t left you out either. He promised to be continually present and He is. He is full of power and might. He shares that fullness with you, too. His love is everlasting. Yours is, too. So, if you have love for God and one another why wouldn’t you want to, and can, move heaven and earth for those you love? Do not doubt your faith. Love it as God loves you and bear the fruit of righteousness and goodness forever!

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Colossians 3.15

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I admire those who are at peace at all times. Nothing in the world disturbs their sense of being in Christ. It does not mean they do not get upset or angry or perturbed. It does mean that they responses in those times is perfect peace. As mighty men of God it isn’t just about being peaceful but peacemaking. We are to lay the foundation for peace in our modeling of gratitude for God’s awesome gift of love in Jesus Christ. We are to lay the foundation for peace in our continual thanksgiving for the blessings of God which are ours but which we could do nothing to deserve them but to receive them humbly. We are to lay the foundation for peace in our building up of one another in times of challenge and in those times when everything seems to be going right. (Yes, especially in those times because it is so easy to overlook the little things that begin to collect together which could turn into a big problem.) But, most of all we are to lay the foundation for peace as we abide in the practice of loving one another. That does include seeking forgiveness for those times when the chaos of life overwhelms us and we wreak havoc in the life of someone else. I recognize I still do not have that perfect peace in my life although I know the author of perfect peace. Mighty men of God, we must continue to seek perfect peace and practice it daily in our lives until we know no other way than this. Father, forgive me where I have not sown the seeds of peace and let there be healing in Jesus’ name.

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Colossians 3.12-14

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience bearing with each other and forgiving whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtures put on love which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

We all learned in school if part of a statement is false the whole statement is false. In reality that means there are no real partial truths or half-lies. In practice that means we cannot be “gray” in our thinking and thus in our actions but we must be for or against, yes or no. Even the scriptures cry out “Let your yes be yes and your no be no” or again “Be hot or cold but do not be lukewarm lest I spew you out of my mouth.” As God’s mighty men there should be no shadow of doubt in what we believe nor in our actions which rise up from us as a result of the belief. In Jesus Christ, there was no shadow of doubt- even when he struggled in the garden before the final showdown and asked His Father to let the cup pass from Him there was no doubt in His statement. He fully understood what was happening and saw the “yes and no” in what was being revealed before Him by the full course of events which He had undertaken during his life and ministry on earth. In the end, Jesus declared, “Not my will but Yours, Father, be done.” Our lives need to have clarity not fog!

When Paul wrote to the mighty men in Corinth he mentioned that we see in a mirror dimly the reflection of our lives but one day the vision would become clear. The clarity of our vision was made evident by the end of that discourse when he declared “And the greatest of these gifts is love.” Again, here in the words to the mighty men of Colossae, Paul makes a similar declaration. When you decide which life you want to live- the life of death consumed by the consuming passions of the world or the life of the living who are set free by the passion of Christ to love His Father more than anything in the world- then you will know with clarity the path before you. One leads to death where unbridled passions will actually put the reins in the hand of the enemy who will lead you to places you really do not want to go. The other leads through the valley of the shadow of death and to the higher ground of still waters, green pastures and the everlasting presence of God whose Kingdom opens to you that can never be closed. But, when you make that decision then you must know how to live in this world which still does not see how to live clearly enough. That life is bound by a virtuous life which is empowered by love. The overriding reality of that love is the forgiveness you give to others as God has given forgiveness to you. How do we do that? Yes, in love. But, how do we give forgiveness to others as God gave it to us? Do I need to die on a cross as Jesus did? No, but you need to take up your cross and follow the path of forgiveness giving which Jesus followed Himself. He forgave us wholly, completely, without question and condition asking only that we go and sin no more, trust in Him in all things and follow Him. Now, I pray you here the full circle of this argument. Our forgiveness cannot be a partial forgiveness because that would be conditional love and that is not of God. If we forgive we must forgive. If we condemn then we will be condemned. It seems we have only one choice as mighty men of God- to forgive all others without question, wholly and completely and then walk with them in the paths of righteousness for the sake of God’s name. That is the way of love by which we have been loved.

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Colossians 3.5,12

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed- all of which amount to idolatry. [Instead] Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

How our lives are supposed to be different when we make that decision to be God’s mighty men. But, as God’s mighty men we must recognize that we still have a brokenness and weakness which is overcome only by our place in the midst of God’s righteousness. We cannot avoid the sin nor its consequences on our own. For this reason Paul urges the mighty men of Colossae to “put to death” the earthly nature that is nothing more than seeking to make of the children of God idols who are meant to serve our needs and to be at our command. This death does not mean to literally start killing things that are a temptation to us nor to engage in self-mutilation. Instead, it means to put them all on to Jesus in our confession of sinfulness and profession of our desire to be free from them. It is knowing that Jesus accepts them and takes them to the cross and there they die. We cannot take them to the cross ourselves. If we die for our sins then our death will not pass through the valley of the shadow of death but will remain forever lost. But, Jesus can and did take them to the cross for us. He bore the weight of them Himself and when He died on the cross so did they. Imagine that- sin only has the power we give to it today. That is why the Enemy wants us to fall prey to the lie that sin can control us. No, we control ourselves by being aligned with Christ. We allow ourselves to be victims, victimizers or victors! Instead of seeing others as slaves to us, God’s mighty men must become servants of all. See the difference in the two natures? Earthly desires of the flesh lead to idolatry which is an abomination to God. But, spiritual desires lead to fulfillment in service which is a glory to God.

Love one another deeply from the heart of Jesus in 2013!

Colossians 3.1-2

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

One of the dangers of biblical studies and the resulting interpretations is adding meaning to God’s word where it was not intended. It is easy to take poetic license at times in order to create a fresh focus. As long as there is integrity to the intended meaning and purpose of the Word, the creative development of a new lens to see that Word isn’t really a bad thing. I say this now because I know there are times when the Spirit puts an image in my own mind to help me understand what He is trying to show me. Today, is one of those days as I read the Word “you have been raised with Christ.” I certainly understand the purpose of the word ‘raised’ to draw our attention to the power and consequence of resurrection. Our old lives have been muted before God with their sins which would have resulted in an eternal death if it were not for faith and grace which are now abundantly ours in Christ Jesus. Our hopes, our understanding, our purpose, our very lives have been recreated and raised up from the clutches of death, sin and Satan and thus set free to become more and more of what God intended for us since before we were born. We all have a purpose and a place in His kingdom making His will known in our unique and powerful way to others who fall within our sphere of influence. We have been given dominion, power and authority to proclaim the gospel of Light and Life which is the Truth of Jesus Christ. It also means that we have been given the God-driven responsibility to confront sin, in love- sometimes tough love, and refuse the lie of demons and the enemy which is meant to enslave the hearts, mind and spirit of God’s people until they surrender their spirit to Satan and eternal darkness. When God raised Jesus from the grave, He raised us from our grave as well. When Jesus, as Peter wrote, ascended it also meant He first descended into the place of death-in-waiting final judgment and preached to the captives there setting them free with the everlasting hope of God’s covenant promise to make them fruitful descendants of Abraham and joint heirs of the Kingdom with all the generations who were to follow Christ. Nothing could hold back God from His intention to love His children into life, authentic life. And in gratitude for us being raised with Christ into the fullness of the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in Heaven, we should then focus on the things of God. As Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, “Seek first the kingdom of God and all else will be provided to you.” I believe all the mighty men of God past, present and future will be able to declare a loud and rousing “AMEN!”

But, honestly, when I read HIS WORD for today, my mental picture was of those who were raised with Christ meaning “reared.” We are products of our “raising,” how we were taught since we were children by the significant adults in our lives. I am speaking to those who were raised in Christian homes by Christian parents, no matter how perfect or imperfect, who had the privileged opportunity to hear the gospel of Christ. We have heard it. We may not have understood it. We may have witnessed the incongruity of life lived by those who said “Lord, Lord” but acted as if they were far off from the truth. We may have witnessed the life of the saints who knew nothing else but the pursuit of righteousness in their lives and the desire to share it with others. We may have struggled with the hypocrisy of dual-mindedness because we were not yet mature enough to live in the world and not of the world- knowing about God but not knowing God. But, once given witness to the Jesus Christ, we must come to that point in life where the truth of God’s mercy and grace, love and forgiveness, meaning and purpose, must become the first and only focus of our lives. We have been witnesses to the truth and to the struggle to live truthfully. It is our time to recognize the need for the body of Christ to reach that next level of maturity because a new generation must be raised up. It is not an “age” generation as the world understands, but a spiritual “reborn” generation as God delights in seeing come into being. Those who are new in Christ where faith has been awakened in them. They will have heard about Jesus and experienced the initial joy of their salvation but they do not yet have the depth of soil in which the full fruit of their life can take root, grow and be plentiful watered by the rivers of life and nurtured by the very hand of God. That is our duty and opportunity as mighty men of God. We have been “raised” and “reared” with Christ regardless of what age it happened. We are all children of the Mighty God but not to be left as children. We are to mature into the mighty men of God which He intended for us to be blessed with the opportunity to be spiritual mentors and fathers to His children on earth. Therefore, we should not have any time given to the “pursuits of earthly living which is of the flesh” but devoted solely to the “pursuits of the spirit which is the essence of authentic living.”

Thank you, God, for letting me see Your Word afresh today!
