Fifth Week of Advent is the Season of Anticipation!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Psalm 5.3

“In the morning, Lord, You will hear my voice; in the morning I will lay my requests before You and wait expectantly.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

As a mighty man of God we count on the faithfulness of God to be always present in and for our lives. God is our constant and we can mark our lives by the true point He provides for all His children. He is like the sun, the moon and the North Star which we can depend on and anticipate their arrival by day and by night. We mark our calendars by the sun and the moon and our journeys by the stars such as the North Star. We anticipate them believing they will never change knowing there will be a day when they may well change forever by the command of God Almighty.

Can God anticipate our presence in Him as well? The psalmist David prayed to God declaring that he would come before Him with prayer and praise. God could count on David’s faithfulness to lift up his petitions in prayer and song. Most of us are quite good about going to God with our laments and troubles. We certainly fill God’s ears with them and His heart is overwhelmed by our troubles. But, I think, God is also overwhelmed by the shortness of our anticipation for His response. Too often we call out like David saying “How long, o Lord.” Do we dare trust His “Just a minute, my son.”? As Mary and Joseph knew their extraordinary son would be destined for a prophetic greatness, they lived in anticipation as to how it would be revealed. They certainly believed God would be there for them. More importantly, however, was God’s anticipation of them being there for Him. He certainly had to believe in them to give them the awesome responsibility of raising His Son. He anticipated their needs and struggles. He knew their prayers and concerns before they even uttered them. But, how satisfying to know and to hear them as they promised and without urging reminders to do so.

As mighty men of God are we equally anticipating and anticated before the Lord? Can God count on our commitments to honor and serve Him with prayer and praise and song and service? Is God waiting in anticipation for us with surety and confidence? Will we do the same and wait in anticipation for Him?

Fifth Week of Advent is the Season of Anticipation!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Luke 2.19

“But Mary kept all the things that were said in her heart and considered them often.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Okay, I know Advent doesn’t traditionally extend beyond Christmas day and certainly not into additional weeks, but the fulfillment of the birth of Christ actually extended for two years until the arrival of the magi from beyond Israel. There was a season of anticipation in the days following the birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph from Nazareth. The census requirement led them to Bethlehem but duty led them to remain there for two years. They did not know there were magi coming ladened with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to be presented to Jesus whom they knew to be the fulfillment of ancient prophecies which they had studied. But, God knew and God remained in control of the situation. Joseph set up a carpentry business and they found a small house on the outskirts of town in which to live. It would be interesting to have heard the conversation upon which the decision to stay was based. There had to be some reason but it is left to mere conjecture. I can imagine that staying in Bethlehem was seen as an advantage considering everything that had happened as God had said. Now it was a time for reflection and waiting in anticipation for what God would reveal next. I believe this is why Mary pondered all the things that had been said by the shepherds along with the adoring words of those who gazed upon the infant Jesus. Mary was in anticipation for what was next. Jesus coming into the fullness of His own was an advent experience all of its own. What is next?

I can’t help but reflect upon the various predictions of the end of the world that have come and gone including the most recent Mayan “end of the world.” It leaves one to consider what is next and how will the next prediction or prophesy be accepted and discussed. Will people grow numb to such announcements and ignore them altogether? Will they be blind to the biblical prophecies that continue to reveal themselves in the history of humankind on a daily basis? Yes, we know there will be wars and rumors of wars and various disasters and natural phenomenon such as Pastor Hagee’s “four blood red moons” teaching. People will say it has happened before and nothing came of it so why now? But, isn’t that the point? Each time is a reminder of what the scripture teaches. Even Jesus declared that He did not know the hour or place but that it was indeed coming. That means we should all be living each day as if we are in anticipation of the fulfillment of Jesus being proclaimed the Lord of Lords, King of Kings and true Victor over the enemy of God and man- Satan. If the signs are in place then the days are upon us.

Mighty men of God, I ask you what are you waiting for? What is in your heart and mind as an anticipation of what God has in mind next for us and the world? Are you pondering the truth that now we have received the coming of the Christchild into the world over 2000 years ago we are living in the days of anticipation for His return? We are in those days where the Church, the body of Christ, is being strengthened and built up to the full measure and stature of Christ. It is in anticipation of its Head of the Holy earthly family of which we are a part to return and take His rightful place at the head of the banquet table, the throne of our hearts and reign triumphantly for all eternity. I, for one, cannot be merely like Mary and ponder these treasures in my heart. I must share them with you and invite the dialogue to be loud, strong and purposeful so that more of our brothers and sisters in faith now and yet to come will be ready when the day comes and the moment arrives.

Fourth Week of Advent is the Season of Love!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Psalm 63.3

“Because Your love is better than life, my lips shall praise You. I will praise You as long as I live. In Your name I will lift up my hands.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

We can ask ourselves, and perhaps we already have, in times of great satisfaction, “Does it get any better than this?” God’s mighty men will respond “Yes, it does get better than this!” Can you imagine the very best times of your life and remember the people, places and things that were included and then confess if Heaven with God is better than this then I can’t wait. The truth is we are tasting the good life of Heaven when we share God’s love for one another with one another. How can we show God’s love?

1. We can start by getting our own lives aligned with God’s word and will through prayerful accountability and immersion into God’s truth.
2. We can prayerfully anticipate the opportunities to speak the truth in love to those who are in need- whether physical, mental, social, economic or spiritual.
3. We can demonstrate submission to God’s will by putting others before ourselves. Sometimes it may sound like making excuses for others misjudgments or mistakes but in actuality it is practicing empathic caring by finding reasons why they may have reacted in ways we did not anticipate or practice ourselves.
4. We can make the sacrifices from our own resources (which are unlimited) to those who have not yet grasped the key to their own kingdom wealth and prosperity.
5. We can give God praise in all things and proclaim His mercy on all people.

As we prepare to enter a new year, I urge God’s mighty men to continue to leave no soul unturned. Reach out with a love that is better than life itself and make the day of another brighter, healthier, more filled with hope, peace and joy.

Fourth Week of Advent is the Season of Love!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

1 Corinthians 14.1

“Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy..”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

So begins our understanding of the journey of the wise men of old and the mighty men of God since. It starts with the first true step in our spiritual pursuit of authentic living. That first step isn’t one we stumbled upon, rather it is one we set out upon in hope of making sense of all the words we have heard previously. There are many paths to follow in this world, options are not at a loss. However, if our priorities are not aligned with the foundation of love then our base camp is a nomadic tent and roving tabernacle. Ah, yes, we have some experience with nomads and tabernacles even in our own spiritual history as God gave the Law of the Covenant to Moses at Mt. Sinai. The people of Israel, they were not a nation yet but rather a herd of wandering sheep with Moses and then Joshua as their shepherds, were to carry the Covenant Law with them throughout their lives but especially on their journey to the promised land. Do you find it interesting that they carried the Covenant Law in a box only? They demonstrated their spiritual immaturity by keeping God in a box, as if they could. What they really did was keep their focus in a box and never saw outside the box. How appropriate that today we are challenged in various facets of our lives to “think outside the box.” Here it would mean that we let the Covenant Law live in our heart, mind and soul. As long as they believed that the Covenant Law was limited and fixed then it had little hold on them. Remember, only a few- the Levites, could carry the Law and even they could not touch it. So, did that distance relate to a distance the people had with God? Was it the means of their spiritual lives being stunted? It wasn’t so much that the Law was a detriment because it brought death but that its presence reminded them of their own death. The Law reminded them of their current place in life which was not in the Garden of Eden. Make no mistake, God did not intend for the Promised Land of Canaan to be an Eden replacement. But, because of God’s great love for the people of Israel, Canaan was a do-over filled with opportunity, prosperity and God’s abiding presence. God was with them. But, just as the Law was only “with” them are rarely “in” them, so was the presence of God only with them and rarely in them. Consequently, they still loved themselves more than each other, the stranger and even God. They replaced love, the true evidence of the covenant of faith, with fear. Small wonder why the angels of the Lord continued to encourage those to whom they appeared to “fear not.”

Today’s mighty men of God must not make the same mistake as their spiritual predecessors. Jesus is Emmanuel, “God with us,” but He is more than with us- He is ‘in’ us. He is in us because He is love, God’s love in the fullness of truth and grace. Therefore, we must seek love. Love must be our aim and our purpose. Love must be our meaning and intent. Love must be our reason and rationale. Love must be our essence and our reality. Love must be our power and our might. Love must be our dominion and authority. Love must be our effort and our result. Love must be our thought and our consequence. Love must be our determination and our inclination. Love must be our everything. Love not just be about it (geographically speaking). Love must be about us (our authentic identification.) It is our pursuit to be all about love and to seek the spiritual gifts which are used to demonstrate its presence in our lives. The spirit is not an external (as a camp fire around we which can warm ourselves) but an internal event (like a furnace that burns within to keep us fueled). But, as Paul writes to the mighty men of Corinth and Ephesus, we must be prophets- speakers of truth and speak that truth in love. We are not to be doomsayers and naysayers but God-sayers in our words and deeds. We are in the Promised Land of God already whether in America or in any other country. We are where God is leading us in order that we might be blessed to demonstrate the truth of which we speak- God is with us, in us and all around us because God is love.

Fourth Week of Advent is the Season of Love!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Luke 10.27,28

“The young lawyer said, ‘The Law says to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and your neighbor as yourself. But wanting to justify himself, he asked, ‘Who is my neighbor?'”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Did you get a gift from someone and feel guilty because you did not give them a gift? Did you tell anyone in your thank you for their gift “You shouldn’t have given me anything” bearing in mind you had not gifted them? Is the spirit of Christmas about the exchanging of gifts? If it was then we would be sadly at a loss for how to repay such an indescribable gift as the one we have received from God in Jesus Christ. God did not ask for us to feel like we shouldn’t have received the gift of Christ because we hadn’t given Him anything. In fact, according to the Word and the young lawyer, we had been giving back to God according to the law. We had been making sacrifices, tithes and offerings just as the law prescribed. But, all of these things failed to provision the salvation we desperately wanted. But, were they ever supposed to be payments for our salvation? Indeed not! Tithes and offerings were gifts of appreciation for being called into the presence of Almighty God. How grateful we ought to be for the joy of living with the knowledge that God is with us. The Old Testament call to sacrifice some animal as an expression of our knowledge that we are sinners seeking to stay in God’s presence by substitution offering was not purposeful for salvation. It failed because people had to continue to sacrifice animals because they failed to complete the heart of the law and stop sinning. What was the heart of that law? The young lawyer expressed it correctly when he repeated the Shema. He failed to understand it when he tried to justify his knowledge by limiting who he was supposed to love. His hope was that he had already accomplished the task just as the rich young ruler had done when he declared he had fulfilled all the laws Jesus said were necessary. But, in both instances there was something missing.

What was the missing element? Honest and fully committed charity to those who are in need. Here is where the world misses the point, I think, about “Santa Claus and Christmas.” The legend of Santa Claus arose around a young man from a family of great wealth. His parents died and he was raised by an uncle who was a bishop. He became a bishop as well and was known for sharing his wealth as secrets gifts to the poor and needy who could not provide for themselves any longer. He was not trying to love God back by showing favor to those in need. Instead, he was demonstrating the love of God for man by doing what he could to help others out of their unfortunate situations. He could not repay God for the gift of salvation- who could or can? But, he knew no one can purpose or earn that gift as well as it was a gift of mercy and grace from Almighty God. So, instead, it was with gifts of love that he expressed his thankfulness. It demonstrated pure love because it did not ask for anything in return for himself save the opportunity to bear witness to the God of his salvation. Perhaps they would be inspired to seek more and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Is this the reason we are gifting others at Christmas? Do we see Santa Claus as a disciple of Christ, a mighty man of God? When the commercial day of Christmas is over does the call to this kind of giving stop? Does the spiritual Christmas ever really end? As mighty men of God we cannot forget the poor and needy when we have been made rich and blessed. We have been blessed so that we can be a blessing to those who are in need, those who are struggling in life to know the truth about God and the fullness of His presence in their lives. We cannot dare to demonstrate the fullest extent of love because we know the truth of God’s love for us.

Fourth Week of Advent is the Season of Love!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

John 3.16

“For God so loved His world that He gifted us His only begotten Son so that whoever would believe in Him should not perish[in the Lake of Fire] but have everlasting life.'”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

The greatest truth, the greatest gift, the greatest reality for all humankind is captured in what William Barclay called “the gospel in miniature.” While many will declare that Jesus is the reason for the this season, I propose the we are he actual reason for this season. If it were not for us as the objects of God’s love and desire, then there would be no reason for us to have this season of peace, joy, hope and love. If God did not care about us, our daily lives and our future life, then He would not have humbled Himself before us in the form of a baby in Bethlehem would who be King of Kings, Lord of Lords and the Savior of the world. We might even give Satan a little credit for this season because he introduced us to sin and makes it possible for us to be exposed continually to its destructive presence. It was, and remains, his hope to undermine God’s existence by subverting the power of love for one another with the call to narcissism or apathy. If he had not invaded the Garden and infected our conscience with the lie against the truth of God’s love, then God would never had needed to send His Son into this world to die for our sins and to live for our fulfillment of hope, peace, joy and love. We would have already had it and enjoyed the presence of God in all His glory in the ever expanding Garden.

But, the past is the past! What is done is done. Gloriously this season represents the victory which has been shared with all of God’s children through Jesus Christ the Lord. Satan is defeated. His lie is undone. God’s truth is revealed in all its fullness as boundless love. God has given us the greatest gift we could ever receive or share- Jesus! Without Him there is no hope of a blessed future, peace on earth, fulfilling joy and irrepressable love. Without Him there is no forgiveness of sin sufficient to merit residence in the Kingdom of God on earth or in Heaven. Without Him there is no grace or mercy to make a difference in our daily lives so that we can press forward successfully, regardless of perfect intentions.

Share the great gift measured in miniature words as Santa’s miniature reindeer to be carried around the world and shared authentically to all God’s children who are in need. We, as mighty men of God, already have received the bounty of this gift in its everlasting truth. But, this truth in love is not known perfectly if it is not shared with those who continue to dwell in darkness who need to see the great light of God’s perfect gift of love. Let your love be real today as you give without measure- Jesus Christ was born, died and was resurrected so that we might have life and have it more abundantly.

Merry Christmas, mighty men of God, to you and all your families.

Fourth Week of Advent is the Season of Love!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Genesis 20.13

“And when God had me (Abraham) wander from my father’s household, I said to her (Sarah), ‘This is how you can show your love to me: everywhere we go, say of me, He is my brother.'”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

The first mention of the word ‘love’ in the Bible is a conditional use of the term between husband and wife. Abraham feared for his own life and that of his family so he put his wife’s virtue into jeopardy by passing her off as his sister in hopes of gaining favor with foreign kings. In essence, Abraham was prostituting his wife (common vernacular would be pimping.) Even though we know that God created the world out of His desire to express His nature of love, love was not mentioned. Have you ever thought about how little love is mentioned when the presence of sin is so great? Isn’t it because sin is the absence of true love, God’s love, and the presence of self-love, the denial of the rights and priveleges of others. In other words, sin sees only the benefit others play in meeting your own needs and not how you can meet theirs.

How wonderful that in this season of love, we see how much God truly loves His creation and the creatures who bear His image. The good news of great joy is the God is with us, He who would surrender His own beloved Son so that we might have life and have it abundantly, Emmanuel be His name, loves us. He does not put our lives in jeopardy when He calls us brother and asks us to call Him brother. He sees us as equals in God’s eyes, though He remains the apple of His Father’s eye. We are His family and He will not surrender one of us in order to placate the enemy. In fact, He would rather die than to see one of us fall into the hands of the enemy of our heart, mind, soul and spirit. God’s mighty men know that is what happened. He died the human death of sinful shame bearing all of our sins, so that the clutches of Satan could not close around us. We slip through his grasp because we are anointed by the blood of the lamb.

As gift givers this holy-day season we ought to share the anointing of God’s love on all of those whom we love and adore. We should not lead them into compromising situations where Satan is strong and temptation is overwhelming. Instead, we should reflect the last use of the word ‘love’ found in Revelation 12.11 where it declares “They overcame the accuser by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.” Mighty men of God do not shrink from death, the fear of dying, but commit themselves to the act of true love which is being willing to lay down one’s own life for the sake of another. In the day’s of Abraham, God preserved Sarah from having her love relationship with Abraham violated because of Abraham’s fear and conditional love. God preserves us as well by protecting us with His Son, Jesus our Christ, because He loves us so much He cannot imagine there to be another way to live.

Fourth Week of Advent is the Season of Love!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

1 Corinthians 13.13

“And now these three [gifts] remain: faith, hope and love with love being the greatest of these.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Paul taught the mighty men in Corinth that if they did not have true love in the hearts, minds, spirit, works and worship then there was nothing they could do to truly improve the condition of man and honor
God. They could mimic tongues, feign healings, proclaim future knowledge, give generously and philanthropically but if they did not have love as the filter through which they understood the need of the people, the desire of God and the purpose of their lives then they were only short-term goal-minded and self-serving. Self-love is a sin. God-love is a blessing and the fullest measure of living life. For Paul faith, hope and love were the quintessential gifts beyond which there is nothing. If there is nothing beyond them then they are of God. These are God’s greatest gifts to all of creation as they speak of His character, nature and purpose. Without faith, hope and love there is nothing because there is no God. Imagine confronting atheists and agnostics with this truth for they have faith in only what they can see and control. That is why they dare not believe in God’s existence or in the specificity of only one God.

But, God’s mighty men know there is but one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Imagine the trinity with triune giftings. When one is faith, the other is hope and the other is love. Embrace this vision of Father love, Son love, Spirit love; Father faith, Son faith, Spirit faith; and Father hope, Son hope, Spirit Hope. These are the quintessential gifts of God and fully represent the nature, character and purpose of our relationship with the Holy Trinity. As Paul described the gifts in numerous letters to the mighty men in the churces of Europe, Asia Minor and the Middle East he knew their day would come to an end because when Christ returned the Church would then have reached the full measure and stature of the body of Christ with Christ as its head. But, when the purpose of those gifts and therefore those gifts had passed away, the triumphant gifts of faith, hope and love would forever remain because they are the foundation- the heighth, width, depth and breadth of God’s reality. They are the measure of God’s kingdom fulfilled.

As we have absorbed the Advent gifts of hope, peace, joy and now love let us remember to define them by the purest expressions found in what Paul knew was the baseline understanding of God- faith, hope and love with the greatest of the supernal and eternal gifts being love, God’s love. Let us keep one another’s consciousness held in accountability by proclaiming God’s ultimate reality- LOVE.

Third Week of Advent is the Season of Joy!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Isaiah 44.23

“Sing for joy, O Heavens, for the Lord has done this; shout aloud, O earth beneath. Burst into song, you mountains, you forests and all your trees, for the Lord has redeemed Jacob, He displays His glory in Israel.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I love it when God’s men come together for worship. The resonance of their voices from bass to second tenor is an awesome sound that absolutely thrills the soul. It inspires us to sing even more and move beyond unison into full harmony. Do we really think the music of heaven is in unison and that we all sound alike? No, God created us in diversity and our songs are different one from another because we come from different directions in life to get to God! But, there is only one refrain and we all agree on this- Jesus Christ is Lord! When all the songs are sung as our joy makes glorious melody they will come together in this one truth, one hope, one faith and one birth! That one birth is what we celebrate during this holy-day season. If it were not for His birth into this world there would be no second birth only eternal death. All our efforts for salvation before this time fell short of the glory of God. Isn’t our purpose on earth to give glory to God? Aren’t we supposed to bring glory to God? Isn’t He the joy of our salvation- the meaning and purpose of redeeming us from our sins and the clutches of the enemy who uses death as a means of turning men against each other and away from God? But, God has overcome death in love. It brings Him great joy to see the enemy stymied again and again as the dead come to life. And in the heart of darkness, we celebrate that there is life in the midst of death. Our songs of joy for our salvation has come to original Israel and New Israel breaks the darkness like the sun rising up on the horizon signalling a new day. Our new day has dawned. It is not far off. It is now and new day after day and our Lord has done this for us. Sing to the Lord, mighty men. Sing of your joy. Sing for joy. Sing joyfully “The Lord has come!”

Third Week of Advent is the Season of Joy!

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

3 John .4

“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Let’s be honest with ourselves as mighty men of God. If we could give our children (and extend it through all the generations of grandchildren and to all those we would treat as our children) anything this Christmas it would be the greatest opportunity to know Jesus Christ more than ever as their Savior and their friend. Don’t we want the lives of our children to be better than our own? Don’t we want them to prosper more greatly than we? Don’t we want them to experience the joy of the Lord more abundantly that we do? Jesus taught that good fathers do not give stones to their children and call it bread or give them a serpent and call it a fish. Instead, good fathers give their children good gifts. Is there any better gift that we could give than a closer walk with Jesus? Consider, therefore, how can you make that happen this year? Will it be through the giving of worldly gifts as tokens of love that are here today and gone tomorrow? Will it be with gifts of money without the thought of tithing and providing for the poor? Will it be in lavish overeating and partying while others are hungering and thirsting? Will it be in caroling in front of broad expanses of Christmas lights while many dwell in darkness and the shadows of death? I am challenged by this word as well and fear the call of worldliness remains stronger at Christmas than the reality of righteousness. What if Jesus were to come this December 25th? How much joy would there be around the world?
