HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Genesis 22.2

“Then God said to Abraham, ‘Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.'”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Adults and children are alike in this regard- we all want to know “how much am I loved.” Love is such a powerful element and force in life. As Christ followers and mighty men of God we are aware of the covenant declaration in John 3.16, “For God so LOVED the world that He gave us His only begotten Son.” God gave us His Son which means that Jesus belongs to us as a love gift and offering so that we might have a personal and wonderful relationship with Him. But, God did more than that. God asked us to be like Abraham in our faith so that we might know of the fullest extent of His love for us. How? He challenged us to take this beloved Son of God who belongs to us as our own son to a mountain He describes for us as Calvary to sacrifice Him in declaration of our desire to remain in covenant relationship with Him. Remember, mighty men, the other half of John 3.16. It is not enough to know that God loves us enough to give us the very best. We must be absorbed into the fullness of the truth which says “We have been given this gift so that whosoever would believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life.” The promise, guarantee, God made with Abraham is that his descendents would be as numerous as the stars in the heavens and the grains of sand by the sea if Abraham would accept the gift of God’s presence, believe in it wholeheartedly and obey His Word when it was given. The guarantee of abundance and prosperity that rises up even to eternal life belonged to Abraham but he would not understand the fullness of it until he was required to act in obedience and experience the mercy and grace of God. The challenge has been no different for us and will be no different for anyone else. We all have been given this great gift called Jesus. But, will we truly believe in that gift and become one with that gift and then act in obedience so that we can receive the fullness of its guarantee?

I hope you are curious to learn more about this lesson of obedience. Join me tomorrow as we explore the guarantee of God for our lives.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Jeremiah 8.7

“Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, and the dove, the swift and the thrush observe the time of their migration. But My people [who are called by My Name] do not know the requirements of the Lord.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

“It’s as easy as falling off a log.” I do not know where the saying came from exactly but I assume it may have come from the logging industry before modern technology took over where men literally rolled the logs through the water by walking on them. It later turned into a sporting event where two men try to spin the log, one person making the other fall into the water. But, we all have tried to walk a log in the woods or a drain pipe or even a curb and found it isn’t as easy as we thought. It takes good balance to stay on top of it. We marvel at gymnasts on their balance beam and high wire artists in circuses. But, while it is easy our innate desire is to not fall off. We want to stay on top. We want to get from one end to the other. We want to succeed. Success is one of those inborn desires. But, there are those who will tell us we cannot be successful so why even try. They declare we will only hurt ourselves so stay firmly rooted on the ground. I believe they are merely covering up their own fears and we should take the opportunity to encourage them. But, what does that have to do with TODAY’S Word?

The Word of God exists in us already. From the moment we were conceived the Word of the Lord was born in us. It’s desire is to be nurtured and encouraged as we gain consciousness of the world around us and our place in it. This is the role of parents and significant spirit relatives, friends and guides. But, the Word is quickened when we are “born again” upon our confession of sin and profession that Jesus is the Christ the Son of the Living God and ultimately our Lord and Savior. That reality allows us to do what is natural to our created self- which is to bear witness to God’s presence, our place in it, our mission and purpose and our ability to do things which the world fears that we might accomplish to rise above the sinful world and celebrate the Kingdom of God around us. Following God’s law of love, spirit and truth ought to be as easy as falling off a log. Falling off a log is not a sign of failure. It is just a reality that is true. It is easy. But, walking the log which requires conscious effort and commitment can be easy as well. Whether we walk the log or fall off of it, we are still to be obedient to God’s perfect will for our lives. We cannot let anyone convince us otherwise because there is only defeat and deaf as its consequence. Some have given up on trying to live the life that is truly theirs in Christ. They may not know it and have taken the fallenness as a sign of defeat instead of a normal reality. We all have fallen short of the intended goal, yet God loves us anyway and desires to lift us up and set us on our feet again to journey in faith, hope and love. We should abide in His Word so much that it returns to be our “first nature” which interestingly enough people would label as “second nature.” The birds of the air do not know why they migrate but they do. They follow that internal message which is given to them for their survival and the provision. It works. It works for God’s mighty men as well. God’s Word is their internal and eternal message for their survival and provision. Ignoring it leads to devastating consequences. But, following it leads to abundant and eternal life.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

John 10. 22-25

“Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. The Jews gathered around Him saying, How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus replied, I did tell you but you do not believe.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

What would did it take for you to believe that Jesus is the Christ? Look back in your faith walk and consider the steps, the people, the situations that surrounded you which led you to believe that Jesus is the Christ and to give your life to Him. Why is it important to do this? Because we cannot assume that everyone’s conversion to faith in Christ is the same. God’s mighty men must diversify their testimony as they minister to God’s people so that everyone can hear it in the place where they are. What will it take for them to believe? Will it be miracles? A failure or tragedy that is without resolution? Will it be a wise word and insightful teaching? With it just happen? Regardless of the how there must be a relationship established with the people for the testimony to settle in and be nurtured. If they do not recognize your voice and see your actions as being filled with integrity then it will be difficult for them to receive and believe. Jesus saw this in the Jews who surrounded Him in Solomon’s Colonnade. He said they would not believe anything He did because they were not His sheep. It did not mean He had rejected them but they had refused His leadership. They had some reason to not want to dare to believe. What a tragedy for them! It is a lesson to God’s mighty men to lay the foundation of faith, hope and love so that the gospel truth can be built up on it. That foundation is loving acts meeting the needs of the people where they are in life. In that regard, God’s mighty men become the miracle, the good news, the seed of truth because it is Christ in them working to bring the fullness of life to fruition. We cannot lose sight of this need and challenge as we go into the world today. Have we cultivated the environment to make it more receptive? There will be those who will always refuse to believe but it cannot be for a lack of effort on the part of God’s mighty men.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Matthew 16.15

“But what about you? Jesus asked. Who do you say that I am?.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

There are a lot of biblical teachers, preachers and writers in the world and throughout history. As the disciple John declared, “If everyone of them were written down there would not be a library large enough to hold them.” That would be an immense reality if John had known the current ability to store information on gig drives. But, the fact is that there are many words about the works of Christ because each of us has something to say about Jesus. He has walked with us and talked with us and called us His own. He was covered our lives, worked through out lives and called them out of captivity into freedom. He is not a mere figure of history but the initiator of history. He is making history in our lives in the present moment. He is speaking even now as you are reading and contemplating His Word for you today. Do you hear him? He is that still small voice whispering love and confidence, meaning and purpose into your ear and into your heart, mind and soul. He is that voice of protection when danger approaches unaware. He is that voice of reason when decision time arises. He is the voice of hope when doubt and despair desire to reign. He is the voice of peace when all around us is falling apart. He is the voice of truth when others stand against us due to our convictions. He is the voice of authority that quiets storms, smooth seas and clears the path before us. He is the provider of our needs as bread to eat, the cup to drink from, the shepherd leading to green pastures and still waters and a constant friend. Share today how Jesus has made a difference in your life. Give them the word that is given you today and listen as He speaks it to you even in that moment. He will give you the voice that is required and wisdom which will form the words that fit the situation. Answer the most important question of all which Jesus gave to Peter, “Who do you say that I am?”.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Ephesians 6.20

“I am an ambassador [of the mystery of the gospel] in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.”

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” – 1 Peter 2.9

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Some believe that the function of prison is to have a “captive” audience thus giving them the opportunity to change the course of their thinking, be reformed and restored to society as a productive member. This must certainly happen with the assistance of ministries who have the captive in mind as many find Jesus and give their lives to Him. Others believe it is the right place for them to spend out the earthly days with no consideration for reform only punishment. Paul’s ministry was often spent behind bars. He stood and preached a message of accountability for all types of leadership from the home to the temple to the seat of government. I am sure there was a hope that Paul would eventually change his mind about the course of his life and turn away from preaching the gospel. I have no doubt that many believed that he could do the least harm while in prison because he was a punishment on decent society so he deserved a life sentence. Yet, Paul took advantage of the opportunity to be in jail so that he, too, could preach to the captives on earth because His Lord and Savior preached to the captives in hell so they might be free to enjoy their life sentence with Jesus. But, as we know, prison is not always the best place to be in; rather, it is a place to be from. But, we see that bars could not hold him nor did it prevent him from declaring the mystery of the gospel though the temptation to do so at times may have been great. What was his decision?

He decided, with prayerful support from the body of Christ, to be that mighty man of God, a member of the royal priesthood of all believers and declare the acceptable day of the Lord whether a prisoner or free, Jew or Gentile (Roman). He was all these things and his experience could allow him to relate mightily to those who shared his fate. The law could not define him literally or spiritually because he had been set free to minister by the Supreme Judge (discern by the law of love) and High Priest of Heaven and Earth (the leader of worship in the house of the Lord whose tabernacle was the heavens and whose foundation was the solid rock of faith, hope and love.) He was glad to take on the assignment of being Christ’s ambassador to those who were imprisoned literally and spiritually. He spoke of Heaven’s intention to the people who desired and needed to hear it most. He spoke the truth in love because he loved the truth; the truth would set men free. Feeling the power of the prayers of believers, in word and in actual presence sometimes) he was equipped to accomplish the task given him by his Christ. He knew his future was secure and he lived according to that future which no man nor power nor principality could take from him. As mighty men of God and fellow members of the royal priesthood of all believers, the path is the same for us. Sin is the great jailer and Satan is the warden. But, he himself is a prisoner as well. He continues to seek the effect of his jailbreak but it will be short-lived as he will be surrounded by those who will believe in the Christ. Ultimately, he will show himself as unreformable and be cast back into the prison of the Lake of Fire, the unconsummable consuming from which no one will escape. Who will join him? I dare not consider the name or the number except as I know that we are to reach as many as possible and set them free from bondage to live together with Christ forever. Now is not the time to focus on hell, mighty men of God. Now is the time to preach the mystery of the gospel and the joy of Heaven, invoking the presence of God in worship and praise so that all shall know of His power and might and His desire for us to join Him in love forever.

August 26, 2012

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Ephesians 6.19

“Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.”

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” – 1 Peter 2.9

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Mighty men of God, members of the royal priesthood of all believers serving the High Priest of Heaven and Earth, Jesus the Christ, Son of the Living God and Lord and Savior of all who receive His Word and believe in it being obedient to it with faith, hope and love, you are not blessed by what you know alone but by what you do as well. As Paul described the new covenant priest and bound them to be a prayer team, he asked for their prayers as well. None of us are at the fulfillment of our realized identity in Christ. We are not fully in tune with His Spirit in our lives. We are seeking such perfection which is unattainable by our intentions and efforts alone. Without the host of others collaborating in prayer, praise and service we would be only shadows of our true effectiveness. We must pray for one another. We must bind ourselves in prayer to them as we pray for them. We must make our prayer commitment know as a reality of obedience and a conscious effort to demonstrate our oneness in the Body of Christ. In this way we must confess that as disciples, students of the gospel, our purpose as teachers, elders, is to continue to learn so that we might be equipped and lead others in their path of being equipped to more fully reveal the mystery of the gospel to the world. The gospel is no secret but it is a mystery that confounds the wise and surprises the humble. It succeeds against sin and those aligned with Satan’s false hope beyond their comprehension because the “darkness” shall never understand nor overcome the “light” of truth. But, it should not be a mystery forever to anyone. There are times when I think that the demons and devils at Satan’s command know far better the revealed mystery of Christ than most Christians. In the gospel the demons cry out to Jesus using his title. They fear His power over life and death knowing their existence on earth can cease in a moment of spoken utterance of revelation and command. But, the mighty men of God should not fear the truth because it brings life beyond the grasp of death. Confessing our sins and bringing ourselves into accountability frees us from the final shackle of sin’s death sentence. As we walk in the presence of God fully attired with the blessing of righteousness and clothed with divine purpose, we can stand before the Judge of All as did the woman caught in adultery who was equipped for new life because Jesus did not condemn the humble but exhorted the captive to have no fear nor shame. The command of Christ was “Go, and sin no more.” So should the words of our mouths, the mediations of our hearts and the works of our lives command the spirit in those we love and service to do- “Go, and sin no more.” And in our prayers for them and with them, we commune with God, breaking bread with them in scripture and song and fellowship that brings worship to its finest hour. Thanks be to God for His mercy, grace and justice. His is like no other we will ever know. We march as soldiers of faith and a priesthood of all believers into the world to defend the truth, save the lost, preserve the righteous and proclaim the acceptable Day of the Lord! Go and sin no more but clothe yourselves in the full armor of God with the prayers of faith, love and hope.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Ephesians 6.10, 18

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” – 1 Peter 2.9

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Congratulations, mighty men of God, you are members of the royal priesthood of all believers. You have been called into service by the High Priest of Heaven and Earth who surrendered His earthly body as an atonement for your sinfully weak attempts at living life without God and without an eternal purpose. But, because of His mighty love for You, He bore the cross on Calvary so that the purpose for which you were born might be accomplished, God’s will be done, His people protected and fitted for service and His Name be glorified and magnified with a mighty force.

Congratulations, mighty men of God, for you have been given the insight to your true nature and calling, your destination is secured upon your service not by works but in your obedience to respond to the grace of our Lord who by His Holy Spirit works in you, through you and with you to call all men unto Himself and restore the full measure and stature of the Body of Christ whose head is Jesus! He has clothed you for your service as we have seen both inwardly and outwardly. You are equipped as no other fighting force on earth because your enemy and spiritual combatants are no ordinary enemies of earth as they dwell among powers and principalities of the air and below the earth and in realms unseen by human eyes. You must carefully discern your actions keeping them in accord with the wisdom and truth borne by the Holy Spirit in you. Speak with the Spirit at all times and seek the Spirit without fail. You are the leaders of worship and praise and service. You are the watchman of your family, your neighborhood, your community- the whole people of God. You are not one but One in Him. You truly are a spiritual army of One as the royal priesthood of all believers.

Therefore, I urge you to commit yourself to the teaching of His Word for today being mighty watchmen. Be strong in the Lord for the enemy is no easy foe. He has powers of doubt and deceit to throw against you. You will feel weak when you see with only your eyes and think only with your mind. Put on the mind of Christ and desire the greater gifts of faith, hope and love. These are the elements of your mighty power against which the gates of Hell cannot prevail. Sound forth the call to righteousness and the alerts of being on guard for where the enemy seeks to come in. He will not enter by the gates but by the cracks and fissures in our lives and in our spiritual armor. Maintain yourselves, therefore, in constant prayer of all kinds for all situations and needs. Prayerfully anoint one another so that your protection remains secure and your focus stays strong. Remember, we are more than conquerors. We are victors in Christ. We are a righteous people whose fate is as secure as our future. We die in Christ to live in Christ. We die to sin so that sin be dead to us. We serve as He served us with the willingness to not only invoke the presence of God and to mete out His blessing but to lay down our lives for another if need be in obedience to His Word which is life for us in His Holy Name! Amen.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Ephesians 6.17b

“Take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” – 1 Peter 2.9

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

God spoke to me as word of reminder that I was not finished with the explanation of the “sword” His mighty men were to be equipped with that is His Word (isn’t there a sword in Hisword?). His referred me back to Deuteronomy 11.18, “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.” Perhaps you were still struggling with a priest being “armed” with a sword or sharp two-edged dagger and wondering if they were hiding it in the folds of the robes. But, in fact, it was in plain view as symbols tied on to the hands and their foreheads. Remember, the priest headgear bore a placard made of gold on which was inscribed “The Holiness of God.” In some traditions, a small box in which the inscribed word was carried was worn on the forehead bound by a band of fine cloth. These were outward signs of the inward reality- the truth of God lies at the heart of God’s mighty men. The heart, being seat of spirituality and reason of every man, carries the Word of God which man puts in place by continued study, prayer and contemplation. When Jesus stands at the door of our hearts, we open them to the renewal of our heart, mind and soul. The Logos, the Word of God- Jesus Christ, comes in and takes His seat in the seat of our lives. Revelation bears the description of the returning Messiah with a double-edged sword coming from His mouth like a tongue. How the tongue with confirm or deny our outward realities with the words which are on the tip of it. With one slip of the tongue we can surely cut someone down as much as one word of praise can save them.

So, as you can see, we are already equipped with a dagger of words. The question comes before every mighty man of God- which voice will be heard? Will it be the word of God which dwells in your heart so deeply that it is the default of every thought and action? Or will it be the sinful implement of destruction that cuts deeply to the soul as Satan desires? If we have wounded, pray for forgiveness and for the healing and saving grace of God to become mightily present.

It was during the Last Supper, near the end of their time in the Upper Room, that Jesus urged His mighty men to equip themselves with a sword (Luke 22.36). Interestingly enough two of the disciples already had swords with them. During the arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane one of those disciples used his sword to cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest. Jesus miraculously healed the servant and restored his ear. Not only did the disciples have two swords but they were not afraid to use them, or afraid enough to use them. However, it did not compare to what the chief priests, elders and officers of the temple guard brought with them. Jesus confronted them with His word saying they had come with swords and clubs as if they were pursuing a dangerous rebellion. But, there were enough evidence with two swords to say “Jesus was a dangerous man.”

Would a priest carry a sword? It is not a part of the description of appropriate attire and accessories found in scripture. We recognize the need for a sword for a soldier. Many of our modern soldiers carry such a sword with them today. It is not a long sword as displayed by Marines in their marching routines or the Middle Age soldiers. Instead it was more of a dagger, a short sword, that could be easily wielded in close combat. It would not have been heavy and unwieldly making the bearer more vulnerable to defeat. It would have been handy, sharp and effective. But, while Jesus urged His disciples to purchase a sword it was for a time, a dangerous time, and served as part of the witness of events leading to His death on the cross, Paul really is speaking of the royal priesthood of all believers arming themselves with a much different sword. He spoke of the Word of God.

The mighty men of God are to be equipped in their battle against sin and its master, Satan, with the Word of God as Jesus was when He faced temptation in the wilderness three times. The Word of God is like that small sword- it is handy, sharp and to the point and effective. Being ill-equipped in this battle will lead to serious consequences which no one would truly want to face. Many enter the battle of temptation without the Word of God and only by the grace of God would they survive. Know the Bible. Let the Word of God enter into your mind, heart and spirit with continued reading, reflection and study. Use it daily and avail yourselves of its truth in continued practice. Wield it with faith, hope and love and, as Jesus said to His disciples when they displayed their swords, “It is enough.”

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Ephesians 6.17a

“In addition to all this put on the helmet of salvation.”

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” – 1 Peter 2.9

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

God’s mighty men cannot afford to lose their heads! It is the assumed fate of the Apostle Paul at the hands of the Romans during his imprisonment in Rome. It was the fate of John the Baptist who stood for God’s perfect way of life against the authority of the day who violated it in every way. But, while they lost their literal head, the figurative head was always with them. As Paul describes the body of Christ, he is clear on this point- Jesus Christ is the head of the Body. He is our salvation! When we put on our right thinking informed by the His good news teaching, God’s mighty men will make the right decision at all times. It is when we forget the mind of Christ that we wander far from the path of righteousness. Paul declares in his letter to the Corinthians “We have the mind of Christ.” This means we know His purpose and plan. It is revealed to us because we are His friends and not merely servants. No soldier would go into battle without his helmet, especially today, because of its great protective properties but also because of its technological abilities, too. With his helmet in place, he is protected and equipped. God’s mighty men, as members of the royal priesthood of all believers, must be similarly protected and equipped.
Even the garb of the high priests of Israel were adorned with their spiritual helmet. It was made of fine linen to remind them of their humility and the call to purity in thought and action. It bore an insignia of gold on which was etched “Holiness unto Yahweh.” This will be a far cry from the mark of the beast which will be etched onto the “helmet” of Christ-denying men and women that proclaims a “holiness” unto Satan. We are the righteousness of God and thus bear His mark. Our “helmet” is a sign of God’s glory, purity and priority of thought and action. How much greater is this when we recognize that we are putting on the head, the mind, of the Savior of our lives who protects us from doubt and equips us with power and clarity of heart, mind and soul by His Holy Spirit.
