HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Jude .8

“In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Oh, the power of a thought, especially those considered before falling asleep. These thoughts are caught in these REM stages of falling asleep and pass through portals into your deep sleep to become a part of dream management where the subconscious mind wants to make sense of deep thoughts. Remember the line from the storyline of “The Shadow”? What evil lurks in the mind of men…the shadow knows. I am not sure I would want the power of that discernment ability. Sometimes the dreams of my subconscious are disturbing as evil is wrestled with. Is it a prediction of what is yet to come? Am I being invited to challenge those thoughts when they become conscious realities? An even greater conviction if our last thoughts are not set on things which are above where the ways and means of God reign supreme. This is why the wise man declared “Resolve your anger before you rest. Do not carry it with you into the night.” Jude warned of those who want to enter the church, especially as teachers, who focus on things that are not of the body of Chirst. They contemplate and meditate on them in the dark hours and they become a part of their dreams. Dreams can be those goals and expectations established about what we want to see in the future. What do the mighty men of God dream about? Do they have the dreams of peace, harmony and fulfillment of the Spirit? Watch, mighty men of God, what you consider before you rest. Pray upon the things of God so that they enemy will not prey in the dark corners of your heart, mind and spirit.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Luke 5.4,10b

“When Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch’. [After too large a catch of fish which brought Peter to his knees] Jesus said to him, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.’”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

A curious turn of events. Peter and his partners- James and John, the sons of Zebedee, had been fishing all their lives. It was the family business which they shared with their fathers just as their fathers had done with their fathers and theirs fathers before them. It was what they were supposed to do in order to support their family and their community. They were not the only fishermen on the lake. We do not know if they were even one of the most successful or sought companies on the lake. But, on this particular day, they were the only fishermen Jesus had in His sights. He was on a recruiting trip seeking members for His family business.

Were these three men, Peter in particular, tired of fishing? Were they frustrated with the struggling economy and rising taxes? Was their a hungering in their heart, mind and soul which fishing couldn’t sate? What was it that Jesus knew about them that would draw them so quickly to follow Him in becoming “fishers of mighty men”? We may not be able to discover the answer to those questions except to say that Jesus knew these men were ready to be caught. Is there a method in Jesus’ proposal that we can utilize in our recruitment to the “Family” business?

3 of 3) He uses our humanity to minister to humans. Jesus will take care of our needs. If the Father will provide for the birds of the air, the lilies of the field and the fish of the sea then He would certainly provide for His children. The purpose of each man is not to provide for himself but for others- his family, his neighbors, his community, the stranger and even the enemy in hopes of transforming him into an ally instead of a foe. Peter soon found he was not “man” enough to handle the test which Jesus gave him. But, God never gives us more than we can handle. He didn’t mean for us to go it alone. He wants us to be a family, close-knit and committed. Peter had to call out for help. His strength alone could not meet the given unexpected expectation. He experienced humility but in the eyes of the Master and the crowd watching from the shore he would not experience failure. He strained against the nets just as he strained to remember all the words Jesus had spoken. Muscles bulged and sweat began to pour out profusely. He began to think he would sweat blood. His fingers ached and began to cramp. He looked through sweat-stained eyes at Jesus who sat calmly watching him. What did He see in Peter? Finally, James and John arrived with their boat and the burden was eased. The catch was overwhelming. Peter looked across to James and John and saw their faces filled with amazement as well. No one had seen anything like this…ever? The cheers and solicitations of the crowd swelled and moved across the calm waters so that it nearly caused the air to ripple around them. The waves of cheers only drew them closer. It was then that Peter’s real self was exposed. He had touched it before during his life but he had run from it. He never really had faced his fear. Was it a fear of success? Of notoriety? Of being expected to take over the family business whose needs had grown when he married? Was he just afraid of what might happen potentially? The fear of the unknown is strong. Confronting the unknown is overwhelming. For the first time in his life he could not run from that fear. He was a captive audience; as captured as the mess of fish emerging from their nets. There were enough fish to feed the whole town including those who had come just to see Jesus. They were hungry. But, just as Jesus was exposed his own hunger as more than the stomach, Peter knew these people were hungering and thirsting for far more than breakfast. They were hungering for life- life in the here and now and life in the hereafter whether they believed in it or not. They were hungering for God wherever He was and wherever they could find Him. Peter knew this now. It was his own hunger as well. He never would admit it himself but he knew it to be true. As the last fish was emptied from the unbroken nets (they passed the test) into the boat now so low in the water the fear of sinking was real, Peter caught the smile of Jesus in the corner of his eye. He wanted to avoid looking at Jesus for fear of what he would see or what He would say. But, it happened. Jesus smiled. It wasn’t the smile of “I told you so.” It was the smile of pride which a father gives a son when a task was finished that would make a father proud. It was that moment when Peter broke. All that he truly was erupted. Tired, aching, confused, amazed, overwhelmed, inundated with the unexpected moment which brought forward everything he ever did or thought about, Peter’s insides came out, “Go away from me, Lord! I am a sinful man!” Sinful men shouldn’t be successful (though he had known deceitful men who were successful in business at the expense of others). Sinful men should not be in the presence of Master (but it seemed to be this way with Jesus for some reason- He didn’t isolate himself from them). Sinful men should not be exposed unless they are to be convicted of a crime and then punished (and Jesus had the air of being one who could judge the hearts and minds of men). It was the moment Jesus knew would come. He knew how Peter could respond and needed Peter to know it as well. It would be the defining moment, one of several, in Peter’s walk with Jesus. But, it would be the same moment that would remind him he was meant for more than what he allowed himself to believe. He was not for himself. Peter was meant to lead others in their walk of faith. Why else would he respond with a spiritual confession? Jesus responded calmly, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will fish for men.” Jesus took Peter’s confession and turned it into his profession. Peter’s work now was doing the work of God.

Where are you, mighty men of God? Are you still confessing your fear or professing your faith? Utilize these tools to bring God’s children in to the Kingdom.

Was their a hungering in their heart, mind and soul which fishing couldn’t sate? What was it that Jesus knew about them that would draw them so quickly to follow Him in becoming “fishers of mighty men”? We may not be able to discover the answer to those questions except to say that Jesus knew these men were ready to be caught. Is there a method in Jesus’ proposal that we can utilize in our recruitment to the “Family” business?

(continued from yesterday)

2 of 3) He addressed Peter’s current condition, the lack of successful fishing, to highlight a deeper hunger. What every man desires is to be successful in his life and know he is of value and worth. Peter and his partners had “worked hard” fishing all night with nothing to show for their efforts. All they could do was wash their nets. There was no need to mend the nets because they hadn’t borne the weight of a catch. They were ready but untested. The question would be if they could handle big success if they experienced it. Men are good at thinking they can do anything but are rarely tested for truth. Jesus gave to Peter that particular test at the end of His oration to the crowd. We do not know the message He shared with the people except it was about the coming Kingdom of God. But, the command to put out in deep water must have been an extension of it- a teachable moment. With skeptism but in obedience because it was Jesus, Peter put out his nets. He was alone with Jesus, except for his helpers. A one boat catch would be handled easily. Their expectation would not have been more than that especially after at least one night of empty nets hauled continually out of the water time and time again. But, Jesus was not about meeting people’s expectations. He was about getting people to explore their potentials and reach them. If you are going to fish, fish big, expect to meet the full potential of the net? Do you even know how much the net could hold? Do you know it any more than you know your own untested, or limited, potential? Peter had no idea until this particular and unexpected morning trip inside himself. Before the nets were fully lowered, they were filled to the breaking point. So successful was the catch that Peter had to call out to James and John to bring their boats to assist with his net. They filled both boats with one net. Imagine what it would be like if they had the nets from both boats. Am I ready for true success? With man it is impossible but with God all things are possible!

Where are you, mighty men of God? Are you still confessing your fear or professing your faith? Utilize these tools to bring God’s children in to the Kingdom.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

We may not be able to discover the answer to those questions except to say that Jesus knew these men were ready to be caught. Is there a method in Jesus’ proposal that we can utilize in our recruitment to the “Family” business?

1 of 3) He used Peter’s livelihood as a platform for His teaching. Sitting in Peter’s boat put out a little from the shore to avoid the push of the crowds, Jesus worked on His own net while Peter could not work on his. Instead of working, Peter was a captive audience not only to the Word of God being taught but to the response of the gathered crowd. He saw them face to face as Jesus spoke. He watched their eyes, the nodding of their heads, their aside comments to a neighbor or friend or even a stranger. He saw the numbers continue to swell as the word spread about this new teacher who spoke of the Kingdom of God, healed a man in the synagogue and others including Peter’s mother-in-law. Success breeds success and the interest in success. He had never seen anything like this before in His life. What kind of questions must have filled his own mind as he searched his heart like so many of those he now watched must have been doing. What doors were being opened to his heart, mind and soul? Did the thought cross his mind about what people thought of him as he sat in the boat with his helpers and this Jesus? Do they think that I am with Him, that I am His disciple? He interests me but that is all. Yes, He healed my mother-in-law but does that mean I am obligated? I don’t owe Jesus anything but my respect. Yet, there is something about this whole experience that I have never known in my life before. Definitely I sense something that fishing never could do. Is there more to my life than the family business? It is all I know how to do. It is what I do best. It is what is expected of me. So many questions but only one answer. Jesus is that answer!

Where are you, mighty men of God? Are you still confessing your fear or professing your faith? Utilize these tools to bring God’s children in to the Kingdom.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Joshua 7.3-4

“When they [the spies] returned to Joshua, they said ‘Not all the army will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary the whole army, for only a few people live there.’ So about three thousand went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai with thirty-six killed.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

How could this happen? In a day when men can create and resource such lavish plans for success, failure remains a possibility. In fact, this failure happened because one man decided to decide for himself what he would do and ignore the command of the Lord which was to the contrary. Because of his lack of faithfulness, thirty-six men were killed and the attacking force of three thousand were beaten severely but just a small number who opposed them. We can complain that it is not fair to punish the whole for the actions of a few but is this what really happened? No, Achan was punished by stoning and then consumed with all his belongings by fire. But, the consequences of his actions did impact the greater whole. As mighty men of God, we experience failure and loss. We may not even know the measure of the consequences of our actions of faithlessness. We must not confuse the two: punishment and consequences. Punishment is judgment with a life and death determination. Consequences are the events which follow the enaction of a decision. There can be positive and negative consequences. Remaining faithful to the commands of God can only result in blessings even if their outcome does not appear so in the short-term. But, the loss of blessings and even punishment can only result in destruction and death even if the outcome does not seem so in the short-term. Yes, good things can happen to bad people and bad things to good. But, in the end, the best things happen to God’s people and the worst to those who sought only their own welfare and ignored the call of God in their lives.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

1 Samuel 14.52

“All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

It is difficult to keep track of the bitter wars with the enemy that are going on in today’s world. Just as Saul found himself as King of Israel fighting on all sides against his enemies, the people of God are the same. Who will fight for them if not the Church. The Church is the mighty and brave men of God. It is an army of truth and compassion moving throughout the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, to dispel of the darkness of doubt, fear and hatred. But, the Church must continue to recruit mighty and brave men of God. Why should the world be allowed to usurp the gifts, talents and abilities which God has bestowed upon His children and use it for its own purpose which is to defeat God. Bear witness to the awesome power of God to heal and to save so that the world will know its true Lord and Master. When you see a mighty and brave man who is doing good work share the gospel of truth and the prayer of faith to win them into eternal life; recruit them for the sake of the Kingdom on earth. God is not looking for just a few good men. God is looking for all good men (and women) to join the cause of eternal life in the Kingdom of Light, Truth, Peace and Prosperity. It behooves the Church to make disciples in all nations and of all nations. Live and serve so that not one of them is lost. Many shall be lost. Many shall refuse the gospel and the life to which it bears witness. But, they shall not be lost because of the lack of effort to preach Christ, Christ alone, Christ risen.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Ephesians 3.8-9

“Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Who among the mighty men of God are of the most of these? As sinners, although redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, we are numbered among the least of these. What a joy to know that nothing will stop God from affirming us as His children and made worthy to carry the blessing of the gospel to those who remain outside of the revelation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This gospel was not given to us for our salvation but for our service. The gospel does not save us. It is the living relationship with our Lord and Savior who offered His life as an atonement for our sins that brought us into salvation. It was by faith that we are able to lay claim to the spiritual riches which are now ours as joint heirs in the Kingdom of God. We are like the prodigal son who take the riches given to us and use them for our purpose. We may even waste them and fall prey to the enemy in depraved lifestyles. But, unlike the prodigal son, we have a Father who sought us out and got into our world so that we might be found, recovered and restored to a place of peace and prosperity. That action of God is now the same for the mighty men of God. They are to seek out their lost brothers in the world by being in their world, though not of it, and bring them home to celebrate at the banquet table of God set with a feast fit for a king and for the prince of the King of Kings. This truth is no longer hidden by those who sought to deprive us of its blessing. Sin was only a cover that is now removed so that our eyes may see and believe. Sin was a cacophony of disruptive doubts that is now silenced so that our ears can hear and rejoice. Though we may have been one of those lost but now found, we are worthy of His favor and made capable of completing His Will designed for each one of us. Rejoice and be glad for this is your destiny and your day which the Lord has made.

John 14.15-17a

“If you love Me, keep My commandments and I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever- the Spirit of Truth.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

We have heard that if God is for us then who can stand against us. We know that we have our enemies and naysayers who want to impede our progress. But, while they can take a stand against us, they cannot remain standing. Their position is a tenuous one when we stand alongside our God. If we are with Him then we can become a formidable team. Why? Because we stand with the Holy Trinity- the Three in One. Yes, Jesus taught that if we follow His commands (not the 10 Commandments), He will give us another advocate. Too often preachers leave out the “other” part. It is important to know that we have several advocates on our side when we align ourselves with God: Jesus, His commandments to love one another as we are loved by God, His angels and importantly His Holy Spirit- the Spirit of Truth. Most of our adversaries will combat us with words of disillusionment and disparagement- they will only have partial truths and mostly lies. As any student knows, if a statement is partially false it is totally false. That is why we are fortunate and blessed to have the Spirit of Truth on our side who exposes and espouses the truth of who we are in Jesus Christ. Mighty men are never alone. They are part of a mighty team as they continue to love Jesus and follow His commands.

Psalm 5.12

“For surely, O Lord, You bless the righteous; You surround them with Your favor as a shield.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Oh the blessings of God’s favor to have it as a shield of protection around us. Today’s world, no less than in the world of King David, sin was on the prowl and destroying persons, families and communities. We need all the help we can get from the enemy. Even the righteous were afflicted by the wiles of the devil who sought to attack God’s people from every corner of life. The call to righteousness, obedience to the Word and Call of God, highlighted the very fact that God is with us. Where God is there is protection of body, mind and spirit. But, as mighty men of God know, one must practice the presence of God to avail themselves of it. So is righteousness a practice of faith and faithfulness. We cannot merely say “I am covered by the blood of Jesus” and then walk into the world and act as if sin is okay. Yes, we must deal faithfully with our relationship to God to avail ourselves of His protection and favor. That means we must continually walk in worship of God- praising Him for His blessing, seeking His forgiveness for when we fall short and bearing witness to the vital presence of God through Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit so that others may rejoice themselves in knowing Jesus as Lord. Do you need protection? If so, seek to live as righteous men and women, children of God, and live.

Philippians 1.3

“I thank my God every time I remember you.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Don’t you think you can make a difference in the lives of others by adopting this spiritual philosophy presented by the Apostle Paul to the mighty men in Philippi? There is little doubt in my mind that giving thanks to God for each person we think about would create an aura of blessing for them. Even in our own minds, the transformation would be significant as we disciplined our thoughts to be filled with thanksgiving. Sure, it is easy to do so when it is a person we admire, love, respect and care for. Giving thanks in those situations is an essential no-brainer. But, think of the added benefit of giving thanks to God for them. It lifts them up to an even higher level of esteem and blessing in our eyes and in our spirit. As we look upon them in our mind’s eye with favor we turn our thoughts into prayers of intercession which the Spirit of God can share. It would become an unspoken but immutable blessing. What a joy!

But, the same would be true for those we remember with thoughts of question, doubt, skepticism, derision and loathe, even pity. Our thoughts upon them are equally prayers and how we must guard those thoughts so they do not turn into judgments and condemnations. There is another spirit at work in the world that feeds off of our negativity. It must be starved to death and oblivion with an absence of thoughts of ill-will. It cannot consume good thoughts; especially thoughts and prayers of thanksgiving. They are filled with the light of mercy and grace which is an anathema to evil and the Devil. The spirit of evil and harm dwells only in the darkness and flees from the light. Thoughts of thanksgiving, remembrances and prayers of peace for those who would be “our” enemy can feed their hungry souls and drive harm from them. Our prayers can become a hedge of protection for them, a safe haven for the Spirit of God to be able to work in them so they may know of God’s great love. Thinking of them with thanksgiving to God declares there is a purpose for them in our lives. Each mighty man of God already has a purpose in theirs. Celebrating that purpose fuels the fire of renewal and redemption. How powerful is it that we can lift their spirits and esteem by simple thoughts and remembrances of thanksgiving?
