HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

1 Corinthians 6.19-20

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

There is a price to pay for our spiritual freedom. In order to be truly free, one must be associated with and united with his liberator. We cannot truly be free from our captor, Satan and sin, unless we are united with Christ in body, mind and spirit. Being “one with Christ” means being one in Christ. It does not mean we stand alongside Christ, though we are aligned with Him. It means that we are melded together as one- fused in body, mind and spirit. Just as Christ declared “the Kingdom of God is in the midst of you” he did not mean it as a geographical positioning but as a truth that the Kingdom of God dwelt inside of them. The ramifications of that should be perfectly clear to God’s mighty men. When we profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior confessing that we are sinners deserving of the penalty of sin which is death but recognizing that He has made the appropriate sacrificial offering on our behalf we become one person in Christ. Are we absorbed into the body of Christ and therefore live in Him? Is He integrated into our own body (heart, soul and mind) so that He occupies the same space with us? Paul declares our bodies are a temple in which the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, lives. As we go, so goes the Spirit of Christ with us. What we say to the world is our word as to what Christ would say. What we do in the world, in private and in public, is our witness as to what Christ would do. We know what He said and did in the world. We can read the gospels of Christ and the letters of the early church leaders and delineate who He was and now is in the world. Do our words and actions match up with His? Are we being true to the witness of Christ who Himself was, is and will always be “one with the Father”? Fortunately, forgiveness is one of the defining characteristics of Jesus Christ. We are not perfect as God’s mighty men but dwell in the midst of perfection, or more aptly defined, perfection dwells in the midst of us. Yet, mercy and grace are a part of God’s perfecting love. If it were not for that truth, we would be as good as dead. So, when we misrepresent the alliance we have in Christ, when we break the treaty of God’s love which was sealed in the blood of Christ, there is still forgiveness and restoration until the day of His full return to this world. On that day judgment will reign and justice will rule. We must prepare ourselves each day as if it were that day and live with integrity to show the world the truth about Christ. He is alive and well in us.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Galatians 1.11-12

“I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

The joy of praying over God’s word and inviting Him to lead you in studying His WORD is what He will reveal to you. It is amazing how God’s Word scribed thousands of years ago still has the power to impact lives daily as if it were being written just for you in the moment. God’s anticipation of our needs shows how much He loves us. He pays attention to the details of our lives even before we were aware of them. And once we are aware of them and think all is lost and there is no hope for wisdom and release there is His WORD speaking directly into our lives. It is a comfort to know that all the wisdom of man, great and small, cannot fill God’s thimble. His wisdom fills our cups to overflowing. Sometimes, as I wonder at creation, how could anyone think this was all just an accident? How does man think he can duplicate what God has done, is doing and will do in the future? There are too many connection points between prior knowledge and current circumstance. For example, in Psalm 107, David writes about the Lord calling the sea with a whisper and the waves lay flat. 2000 years later as the disciples are caught in open water, Jesus awakes to dispel their fear with a word to the wind and the wise- “Peace, be still.” It is good that we have God’s Word recorded for our study and reflection. As we learn from the past, we can anticipate the future and walk confidently through each day knowing God is not made up but is real for our benefit and well-being.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Acts 3.26

“When God raised up His servant, He sent Him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

When God raised Jesus from the grave to put an end to the curse of death it was so that He could come to each of us personally. As mighty men of God we serve in this world much like John the Baptist announcing “Repent for the Kingdom of God is near.” Indeed, the kingdom of God is as near as our own heart, mind and soul. The call to repentance was not invoked as a threat, though it can certainly be a wake-up call, but as a declaration of simply truth. I remember playing a search game where the only clues were “hot-warm-cold.” The closer we were to the object in mind the warmer we were. When we were right on target we were hot. When we are surrounded by the cold hard truth of sin which is death (though hell is not a frozen tundra experience) why wouldn’t we seek the warmth of the love of Almighty God who loved us so much in advance that He would send His own Son into the world not to condemn it in judgment but to reconcile it in love with mercy and grace? Don’t miss the benefits of life in the kingdom when the blessings are so near. Jesus is waiting at the door of our heart, mind and soul wanting to come in and take up residence there forever.

June 27, 2012

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Psalm 69.30-32

“I will praise God’s name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than the gift of an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs. The poor will see and be glad- you who seek God, may your hearts live!”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Was the psalmist a Texan? With all that talk about cattle I had to stop and wonder what was going on. It would seem, outside of Longhorn cattle, we might have a little more in common with our Jewish brothers than we think about. I thought about that when I heard it was snowing in Jerusalem. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen. Hey, I can say that about Texas, too. So, it should be no surprise that the psalmist call to praise God’s name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving, also a song, might fit right in with God’s mighty men elsewhere (and right here in Texas, too.) We are given to song. We sing in the shower. We sing while we mow. We sing while we drive. We can even sing at work and especially at worship- our spiritual work. Our song will lift the spirits of the poor whether it is a monetary, emotional or spiritual poverty. Our song will bolster other mighty men to continue the march of faith, hope and love. Our song will please God more than any gift, though He will not turn our gifts down, because it speaks from our heart, mind and spirit of a great love for God which man has. So, I encourage my fellow mighty men of God from Texas to Israel to all nations of the earth- sing to the Lord a new song, an old song, a favorite hymn and be pleasing to God and helpful to one another.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Job 14.16-17

“Surely then you will count my steps but not keep track of my sin. My offenses will be sealed up in a bag; you will cover over my sin.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

What Job longed for as he worked through the dark nights of his soul, we actually have. Even when he reconciled himself to the tragedies of life which took his family and possessions away and declared that nothing would separate him from believing in God, he still did not have what we have in Jesus Christ. His trust did not waver. His confidence remained secure. His eyes stayed focus on the God of his salvation. But, he did not have the promise of eternal and abundant life. But, he had hope. He would have believed that Jesus was the Christ and would have committed himself to walk in His way, truth and life.

What was his hope that we have for ourselves? He declares in HIS Word for today that his sins would no longer be held against him- grace. He knew God had His spiritual GPS on him and saw all that he did. His offenses were recorded in the Book of Life because his ancestors had eaten the fruit of the tree of good and evil. It is what opens our eyes to sins and trespasses of man and hides our eyes in shame when we look toward ourselves. But, the day of Jesus comes into our lives when all our sins are sealed up in a bag and thrown into the tomb to never be seen again- mercy. You get the picture, don’t you? Consider CSI where they track down a killer who has buried a body in a bag with lime to speed up the deterioration so that the smell would not be detected if the pursuit is delayed just long enough. It is then covered up never to be seen again.
Yes, when Jesus was laid in the tomb it was our sins that were there covered over with mercy and grace. What was found three days later? Nothing! The sins were gone and only the glory of God remained- Jesus the Christ. The tomb is for death and sin not life and righteousness. The tomb cannot contain what it is not meant to hold. It was not meant to hold Jesus the Christ and it is not meant to hold us. What goes to the grave was and is our sinful selves, our sinful history. What remains is our holy selves and holy future. Rejoice. Job receive more in this world when he confessed what was still in his future. Think about what God wants us to recognize is ours as we walk in our future!

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Luke 2.22-24

“When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took Jesus to Jerusalem to present to the Lord and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: ‘a pair of doves or two young pigeons.’”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I heard a very interesting word recently that was meant to remind us that Jesus who died on the cross was our sufficient offering for forgiveness and reconciliation. Every mighty man knows this. It is the further note that had eluded me in the past. The lamb, the traditional offering, determined the quality or measure of forgiveness. If he priest determined that the offering was without blemish it was accepted and the person offering it was restored to wholeness. (Of course, the rich could afford the perfect offering and never had to change their heart and mind of sinful ways but would be called “whole.”) Side note aside, we are redeemed by the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It is not our condition, financially or spiritually, that determines our forgiveness but that of the Lamb whose blood was slain. It would seem that we would take that redemption seriously, humbly and gladly even if we did not intend to do so from the first!

But, I want to go one step further as I reflect upon HIS Word for today. When Mary and Joseph came before the priest to consecrate Jesus in the Temple, they brought an offering of two doves or pigeons. They could not afford the perfect lamb. But, the offering of two doves is the required offering for restoration of the birth mother following her time of purification: one for the burnt offering and one for her sin offering. She was called clean not from her sin for she was without sin but from the fact she had given birth and shed blood. In other words, God had already declared her status as “whole.” The sacrifice was not really about the legal consecration of Jesus. So, was Jesus not consecrated? Was He not legitimate in the eyes of the law? Or was the sacrifice seen as “two for the price of one” and as His mother was so was He, too?

What does this mean? It means that we are consecrated to God without a sacrifice needed and thus blessed with favor and gladness. It means that we are reconciled to wholeness by the blood of the Lamb in whose name we stand before God humbly and gladly. It is a perfect picture that includes each one of God’s children so they may enjoy the favor of God forever.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Colossians 3.15

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

In order to have peace, one cannot be afraid. The concept of fear and being afraid is one that confuses God’s people. On the one hand we are told to fear God alone. On the other, we hear God’s angels declaring “Peace, do not be afraid.” We can declare that the command to “fear God” is one that directs God’s people to have respect and reverence for God and God’s power. He alone is the One who can kill the body and the soul. The enemy can only kill the body whether by sickness, disease or violence. If God has the ultimate power to destroy doesn’t He have the ultimate power to preserve? Has God put that power within our grasp by commanding us to be at peace? If we are at peace, then there is a level of trust which allows God to work His wonders in and through our lives. Does this mean we are instantly healed or made to abundantly prosper in this world? No, faith does not guarantee that these are our gifts in this world. Faith does proclaim that in Heaven when God’s will is perfectly manifested there will be no more tears, crying, sighing, sorrowing, dying, hungering, thirsting or any of the detriments to peaceful living that we see existing in the world today. It isn’t a matter of perspective. It is a promised spiritual reality. Therefore, as mighty men of God we must trust in God at all times, in all situations with all our strength of body, mind, spirit and soul. If we trust in God, sometimes we will really have to work at it, then we will be at peace with our circumstances because we know the end result is secured and cannot be taken away from us. If we are trusting and peaceful, then we are able to be thankful even when thanksgiving doesn’t make a lot of sense. Things don’t make sense because we are short-sighted and cannot see with our eyes the fullness of God’s plan. We must believe in what we do see- the Word of God. Its promises are being revealed daily and its prophecies, which are promises, too. Do not be afraid in this world. It won’t always be easy but it will not be impossible because God is with us in spirit and truth- confidence and peace.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Psalm 68.19,20

“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

We are familiar with a particular insurance commercial promise, “You’re in good hands with Allstate.” Some would debate the veracity of that statement and prefer other insurance companies. While we certainly should be aware of our earthly insurance needs for house and transportation and how it is good to have medical insurance as well as a nest egg for retirement are we as focused on our spiritual insurance plan? God’s mighty men must first place themselves in the hands of God and make sure they are aware of the premium which was paid in advance for their spiritual welfare. There are no dotted lines to sign on and no Flo to entertain us with in commercial presentations when it comes to our policy for eternal life. Yet, without that policy in effect no insurance in the world would be able to protect our lives, relieve our burdens or help us escape from death. Some humorously call it “fire insurance” because we have already gone through the flood stage of salvation. We reenact it when we are baptized and upon the cleansing remembrance of water we are born into the world of fire being steeled against the attack of the enemy to seduce us into weak denials for the need of God. How good it is to know that God bears our burdens. We may experience trouble in our daily lives but without the mercy and grace of God, could it be worse? I have to consider that if God is bearing our burdens daily, those things which would keep us from pursuing the future, then what we know as a bad day or a troubling moment is not a burden. Rather, it is an opportunity to know that God is sharing the heaviest part of our daily load. We are not free from trials and tribulations because we are citizens of a sin-filled world. (Is the world really sinful? Did it rebuke God and reject His wonder? No, only people can do that and ravage it with their own sinfulness.) But, we are not prisoners of this world either. (The world cannot hold us captive. Only people can hold people, and animals, captive for their own selfish gain.) Instead, we are citizens of the Kingdom of God and children of the Most High God whose own Son is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. That actually makes us princes (mighty men) and princesses (mighty women.) If this sounds like good news and a good word, then you are right. It is and worthy of bringing praise from our hearts, mind and spirit to our lips so that God’s saving grace can be proclaimed throughout the earth and into all the world When it comes to God we are in great hands!

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

1 John 2.24,25

“See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. This is what He promised us- even eternal life.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

In the beginning, there was God and stuff. Interesting how human beings have such a great desire to focus on the stuff. We keep stuff around us. Look in your closet, your clothes drawers, your cabinets, your garage, your glove box, your storage spaces, even your purses and billfolds and you will find evidence of stuff. Is there evidence of God? Can you turn your stuff which is the evidence of living in and of the world into the stuff that makes God’s will true in the life of someone who has no evidence? Mighty men of God as so blessed. God gives them the stuff that is necessary to survive each day. He doesn’t give us more stuff than we need- good or bad. The Bible calls it “daily bread.” The wilderness Hebrews called it “manna.” They were told to gather only enough for their family for a day. No one took less and if you took more it would become wormfood. This was the case except on Friday morning which was the morning before the Sabbath which began on Friday night. On that morning you were to gather enough for two days. God provided enough for the work of Friday and Sabbath rest. Imagine, Saturday was a gift of rest, peace and family time without distraction. That is the way it was meant to be from the beginning. God has a plan which put into effect in our lives still leads to righteousness, to oneness with God and Son and Holy Spirit and even eternal life. All God asks of us is to keep what we have heard from the beginning. There is God and God’s stuff- not human clutter in thinking, actions and accumulations. Do we have room for God’s stuff in our lives? As mighty men of God there should only be room for God’s stuff in our lives. If there was then we would have no need for Spring cleaning because there would be a daily cleansing of mercy and grace and a weekly cleansing of time and reflection on the Sabbath. It has to start somewhere- it might as well start at the beginning.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Isaiah 51.1

“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord; Look to the Rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

We are attracted to the beauty and shimmer of fine cut jewels. Our eyes are drawn to them with rich admiration. But, we are observing the finished product and not the original stone. Only the hands of a crafted jeweler do we see the beauty within. Michaelangelo was once asked how he was able to create such beautiful statues. He replied “I see the figure inside the rock and release it.” As God’s mighty men we are raw stones in the hands of a master craftsman. He sees the beauty within and releases it. We are to reflect the craftsmanship and the fire of reflecting the glory of God through our lives. We are not perfect because we have been born into this world. Even the finest cut jewel will have some flaw in it; some more obvious than others. But, because of the grace of God we have had our value restored in spite of those flaws. It is what we do with them for the glory of God and the welfare of humanity that makes the difference. Isaiah called the mighty men of God into accountability reminding them that they were formed from the source- the Rock of their salvation in the quarry of God’s mercy and grace. So, were we formed at the command of God. Let your lives reflect the glory of God and remember where you have come from and out of.
