HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Matthew 1.1,2

“A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham who was the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Every mighty man has to be from somewhere. We all have a lineage that extends back to a single beginning. Along that line, sometimes including ourselves, there are good people and not so good people- sinners all, but our beginning can always be traced back to righteousness. We were conceived by God in righteousness for His holy purpose to be in relationship with Him forever and ever. There are twists and turns in the line through which we have passed in, through and beyond the shadows of death. There is a day in all of our histories where our heritage was changed forever and the right to choose our destiny included restoration with our Heavenly Father, the Lord God Almighty. We have this in common with Jesus whose lineage was created in the hope to prove He was the foretold descendant of David, the Messiah. Yet, it was not His lineage that made Him Messiah. It was that moment in time we all share in common when He was taken upon the cross, dropped into the world for our sins and was raised from the grave for our lives. While we all have a single beginning, it is our future residence that will make us different. In Christ we have the hope of our salvation which is to live with the Father forever. Without Christ, we have hope only for what the world can give us in its sinful state which is eternal dying without final death.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Ezekiel 31.10-11

“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because it towered on high, lifting its top above the thick foliage, and because it was proud of its height, I handed it over to the ruler of the nations for him to deal with according to its wickedness. I cast it aside.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

As Ezekiel spoke the Word of God to the Egyptian pharaoh with an image of the demise of Lebanon comparing it to a fallen cedar, he also speaks to anyone, including God’s mighty men about the consequence of false pride. There is a difference between pride and false pride. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christ followers in Corinth a warning of being puffed up with too much knowledge. The prided themselves to be a people of vast knowledge. It probably interpreted better as “those who seem to have an opinion on everything which they believe is the truth.” This would be the clue to understanding “false pride.” False pride takes ownership of knowledge and achievement as if it were a product of their own efforts. In the Church this would look like works righteousness. Christians are warned against works righteousness because salvation cannot be earned by any “work” save confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord and living in response to that confession with integrity. But, we can take pride in the work that we do to make the lives of others better. This would look like righteous works; those done as a response to the knowledge of grace and blessing in their lives because of Jesus Christ. Feeling good about what we do is not wrong until we claim it as a “me” only reality. But, when we give glory and honor to God for doing great works in and through us then the glad feeling of accomplishment is constructive and positive. Be warned about taking credit for yourself with your achievements. Any glory we may have comes from the bounty of God’s blessing. If we do not have that blessed life in us then we are as good as dead. We will become deadwood good only to be cast in the fire and consumed to ashes. How many civilizations, nations or governments have we seen who have sought to rule the world, even if it is only their own, who have survived? God’s mighty men would not want the same to be said for their own domain- their home and family. Remain humble. Keep your eye on the righteousness which is your blessing. Feel good about what you have done because God has favored you with the resources to accomplish good in the world for others.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Acts 8.4

“Those who had been scattered preached the Word wherever they went.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Jesus’ commissioning of all His disciples includes “going into all the world to make more disciples.” The unconsidered response to the persecution of Christ followers in Jerusalem was the spread of the Gospel throughout Israel, Judea and to the far reaches of the empire. One way or another, the call to fulfill Christ’ challenge and charge was going to happen. Beginning with the witness of Stephen which led to his death by stoning and the subsequent persecution of those who shared his faith, the book of the Acts of the Apostles describes this faith migration of itinerant preachers and missionaries of the gospel of Jesus Christ. First with Philip who literally preached to all points of the compass then to Peter and John on to Barnabbus and Paul who carried the message of repentance and God’s reign to head of the Roman Empire with the intent of reaching Spain and probably Great Britain, the Church was a mission with a cause on the move. It should inspire God’s mighty men to follow in their footsteps and preach the gospel wherever they find themselves. “Lost and Found” exists everywhere inside and outside the Church. Regardless of the time and the place the commission of Christ remains the same. It was just those faithful first generation disciples Jesus anointed for ministry. It was for all generations until His return and then only God knows where we shall be sent next. Until then, it behooves the mighty men of God to be the Church on the move preaching wherever you are sent, scattered and sentenced.

April 25, 2012

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

1 Chronicles 12.2

“They were armed with bows and were able to shoot arrows or sling stones right-handed or left-handed; they were from the tribe of Benjamin.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I have heard it said, “The only side we should be on is God’s side.” Isn’t it the truth? The world wants us to choose sides in order to keep people divided in this world. The reality is that outside of Jesus Christ, all men are divided (some less than others) in their loyalties and understandings. But, God is clear in His objective and purpose. His Word is succinct and unambiguous. If the mighty men of God can stay on God’s side in all things at all times then when the final division of sheep from the goats occurs they will be on the only side that matters. Until that time, God’s mighty men are to avoid judgmentalism, be even-handed and work to bring all people to a realization of their salvation in Jesus Christ. I like tHIS Word for today because it is a reminder to me, and hopefully to God’s mighty men, that we are to be equally adept for service using our right hand and left hand. Neither hand should be dominant lest we be ill-equipped to do God’s will. The enemy of life comes from all sides prowling on our strengths, in case we suffer from arrogance, and our weaknesses, in case we suffer from low self-esteem. Being balanced in our lives so that God is in all things and through all things works for God in us is a key and critical necessity for the mighty man. Don’t you remember the phrase of defeat which states, “The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing”? We must work to be equally able to serve God with our whole selves prepared for battle at every hand. Remember Jesus died on the cross with both hands nailed to the cross extending mercy and grace to all who would receive it.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Hebrews 13.1,2

“Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some people have entertained angels without knowing it.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Every little bit helps. What do we offer to others in their time of need? Even when we do not have “silver and gold,” (as Peter and John when they went to the temple to pray and met a lame man along the way) we do have the blessing of prayer and the presence of God. Are we disciplined enough in body, mind and spirit to be kind to strangers? All behavior is based on need and ours is not to judge but to serve. As God’s mighty men, we must practice the presence of God to family, friends and strangers as if they were our brothers. In fact, in Christ Jesus we are brothers. He gave Himself for our sake when we were just friends and strangers so that we could become brothers and thus inheritors of the blessing of Heaven. Of course, I cannot ignore the encouraging word “entertained angels without knowing.” It is not spoken as an enticement with benefits as if we are building up collateral in Heaven by doing good to angels. In reality, if we do not offer our blessings and resources to those in need then they can become as the manna from heaven which is here today and gone tomorrow. If we ask the Lord for our daily bread, it is the manna we ask for which sustains us in following God day after day. He provides what we need to serve the day with gladness. Keeping any for ourselves only creates spoilage and excess that goes to waste. Check out the clutter in your life and in your home (including storage sheds and garages). Are you living with excess possessions that could be used to help others? Do good and live for the day.

April 23, 2012

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Luke 17.22

“Jesus said, The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man but you will not see it.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I don’t know about you but I know I have longed to see Jesus’ face and imagine what it will be like to hear Him tell me He has forgiven me and always has loved me. I know there have been times when I am so tired and frustrated with life that I have contemplated the end of days. Yet, at the same time, I am very aware that while I have the confidence of seeing Jesus and hearing His voice say “grace,” I know that if it were not for Him I would be only one of those wailing in the days of His return. Many will see Jesus face to face and still refuse His grace. They will still doubt His love and refuse His mercy. They will choose rather to suffer in the days to come than to repent before the day of His coming. And while we will long to see one of those days when Jesus has returned and rules in peace for a thousand years, we must live and serve in this day with as much peace as we will allow the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us. We cannot horde peace. Rather, we must share it as we have it to share. We cannot ignore and put to the side the peace of God which is ours already because we are frustrated. These are the times when we must model the life of peace which is ours so that in the day of their trouble they will know that it is possible. When they ask, “Why are you at peace?” reply “Because God is peace in me.” Jesus still believes in His mighty men to continue to do His work until He returns to complete the job. Be at peace. Rejoice, give thanks and bear witness to the Lord of Lords and King of Kings and the Prince of Peace.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY (1000th post):

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Psalm 119.109,112

“Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget Your Law. My heart is set on keeping Your decrees to the very end.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

We each are far from perfect. Even though the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, has been poured out as the acceptable offering for our sins allowing us to lay claim to our place in Heaven with Him, we are not fallible. The blessing of freewill which God pronounced to our ancestors Adam and Eve leaves us susceptible to failure, sin and degradation. We do not always make the best decisions, sometimes succumbing to temptation even if only in our thoughts. Our hope is to be in control of our emotions, desires and intentions. Our hope can only be secured when we stay focused on the powerful presence of God in our world and especially in our lives. The psalmist, a mighty man of God himself, was painfully aware of his failings. He identified them as how he would take life into his own hands. Without God we are quite fallible. We may believe we have the strength, will and resources to succeed and survive on our own. However, such a decision would be true only for life in this world for as long as it lasts. Of course, we may pass on the opportunity to future generations but they will never be able to escape the bondage humans have in this world. Without God, we who came from dust shall return to the same. But, in Christ the mighty men of God have discovered there is more to life than just the flesh and blood of this world. Jesus was fully man and fully God. He was flesh and spirit. As He lived for God and surrendered His flesh and spirit to the will of God, He received the blessing of resurrection and the gates of the Kingdom open to Him. We, too, have that same hope in ourselves as we have confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God and profess Him as Lord and Savior of our lives. Though we may not always make the best decision our heart is set on keeping God’s decrees to the very end. Those decrees are to love God and neighbor with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Pursue the Perfect One. Follow in His steps. Seek to do His Will as He sought to do the Will of God. He, too, knew that without obedience to God He would not be able to fulfill the calling in His own life. He is the Mightiest Man of All but He believes that you, too, are a mighty man of God. Keep your heart on doing God’s will and the blessings secured for You by Christ shall be realized.

April 21, 2012

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

1 Peter 3.13,14

“Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

It isn’t always easy doing what is right, especially when you are helping those whose perception of what is right has been skewed by those who promote evil. Whether it is in business or the church or in families or anywhere in the world, we don’t really want to hurt people by doing what is right. Yet, doing what is right sometimes creates the conflict of interest that brings a sense of harm or hurt to others and thus to yourself. But, can we ignore the signs of the times? Can we quietly and cautiously walk through life worrying about hurting the feelings of others and reducing ourselves into silent enablers hoping that one day “they” will see the truth? If we refrain from doing what is right or saying what is right in order to protect the feelings of others then we may have to admit that we have been delinquent in building up a strong relationship of being the right kind of people. Generally, few people will harm God’s mighty men for doing good. In fact, I have seen few who ever turned a good deed away especially if it provided some advantage or met some need. However, when doing the good deed turned into building up an expectation of change, then suddenly the life conversation can take a turn for the worse. Do not be afraid of planting seeds of goodness and kindness. It may not be your place to cultivate the seed into fruitbearing. But, enjoy the blessing which comes from doing good as it is never lost from the view of God. Remember, sometimes we do have to endure some pain and hardship in order to break down the barriers of evil which hold God’s people captive from the blessing. Jesus declared, “There is no greater love than this that a man be willing to lay down his life for another.”

April 20, 2012

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Acts 4.31

“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they all were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the Word of God boldly.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

It is still popular to declare “Rock the house” with hands raised up imitating the lifting of the roof. We think it is just a modern saying and action but it seems to have been borrowed from Christians worshipping in Jerusalem. The disciples had already experienced getting “fired up” for the gospel at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit rushed through the room where they were staying and empowered them with proclamations that all people could understand. Now, God was moving heaven and earth around the disciples as they prayed. Once again they were blessed with the ability to speak the Word of God boldly. While the early church sought to take over pagan practices and supplant them with Christian meanings in hopes to undo evil and promote good is the Church in danger of losing Christian practices by letting the world take over their practices and giving them secular meaning? I was amazed when I walked into Barnes and Noble to see shelves of “Bibles” at the front door. It was not a good amazement but one of shock and dismay as each “bible” was a cookbook. To find the Holy Bible one had to go into the store and search for it in a distant corner. Jesus send His mighty men into all the world to fill every corner with faith, hope and love; dominion, power and authority. He truly wanted the earth to move under their heart and for the Heavens to come down and for the House of the Living God wherever mighty men meet to be rocked. Jesus is the Rock and His Word rolls on forever.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leave no soul unturned in 2012!

Matthew 28.1

“After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalence and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Surprised by grace. Though they did not know it at first because they did not anticipate the immediate effect of the grace of God on Jesus, they certainly were surprised. Matthew’s remembrance of the resurrection maintained the authenticity of death’s grasp on human hearts and minds. Tombs are thought of as closed and final resting places. The Marys went to the tomb to look at it. When the stone was rolled in place 36 hours previous, they were there to see it happen. They were not finished grieving. The fullness of what happened had not sunk in. They were still wrestling with reality. They went to the tomb to ask that important question “Why?” But, before they could begin that process (I am sure they were talking about it all night) in earnest at the sight of the tomb their world was rocked quite literally. The stone was rolled away by an earthquake with the appearance of God’s angel, the guards were petrified with surprise and fear and the tomb was empty- open and empty. They even met Jesus on the way out of the garden on their way to obediently tell the disciples what they had seen.

When we come to see Jesus in our time of worship, praise and study with prayer what do we expect to see? Do we expect to see anything? Are the stones closing the vaults of good news still in place? Are we still seeking the life where death rules? Are we expecting to see Jesus? Mighty men of God, we should be living our lives in such a manner as others expect to see Jesus, too, and not another life still bound to the effect of death in this world. We are to be like the Marys and Jesus when it comes to tomb issues. We should be on the move ready to share the good news that Jesus was raised from the dead and lives!
