HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

1 Samuel 8.5

“They said to Samuel, ‘You are old and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.’”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

As leaders, God’s mighty men must be aware of the next generation of leaders they are impacting. They set the model and example of this profound leadership which is “a walk of faith as believers in Christ Jesus.” But, just because we set the example does not mean that everyone who could be influenced will be influenced. Samuel saw this with his own sons Joel and Abijah. With a little success and the burden of responsibility rising they accepted an easier way of leading which ended in failure. Sadly, the response of the people being led was equally misguided because they asked for a king to lead them just as kings did in other nations. Do we want a king like other nations or do we desire the King of Kings to lead us. God has set before each of us the mightiest example and role model for leadership of self, family, community and nation in His Son, Jesus. There is no other leader of success that we should seek out. Many have accepted the challenge and follow Him. We can learn much from them but they themselves would point to Jesus as the One who should be sought out. Do we seek earthly models or do we truly seek out Christ to lead, guide and direct our lives? No matter what, I pray we will never accept the axiom of “give us what everyone else has” unless what everyone else has is Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

2 John .8

“Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

How long would you work with only the promise of a pay check? Not only consider how long you would work but the quality of the work you would do? In a world that measures the completion of work by the amount of money to be spent and earned, faith becomes a scary variable. Of course, Jesus taught, and the Holy Spirit continues to teach, “seek first the Kingdom of God and all of your needs will be met.” He didn’t say “all your wants.” Even I have a list of wants, would likes, hope fors and if onlys but faith defines and divines the reality of God’s mighty men. We live in a world overwhelmed with confused values. God’s mighty men cannot fall into the same pattern as men of the world. We operate by faith knowing that our greatest reward and defining value is already ours. It cannot be taken away. It can only be surrendered. We do not see a world at total peace, with sickness and disease totally overcome, hunger a fading page in a history book or a global community bound only by love which has all things in common. We do not see it YET! But, that is what we are working for and toward as mighty men of God. Do not give up hope. That day is coming when all that has been promised you will be revealed and heaven and earth will revel in joy. Do not trade what you already have from God which comes in all our tomorrows for what you could get from the world that will last only until it is yesterday.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Psalm 24. 4,5

“He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God his Savior.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

On most police cars you will see the motto “To serve and protect.” If God had a car to drive around the kingdom of Heaven I could imagine that it might have a similar motto. How wonderful it would be if the result of both cars’ declaration were the same. The psalmist would understand why there is a difference. As for God, His word is true. His purpose is to provide and protect. His desire is to serve people for the greater good faithfully and faultlessly. God can do it because He has clean hands and a pure heart. He does surrender His being to idolatry nor swear to do something and then renege. But, the same cannot always be said for men of the earth. Personal agendas based on fear and failing, powered by emotion and passion for self and left bridled only by a loose hold on the reins turn an exclamation mark of emphasis and validity into a question mark of doubt and skepticism. Not all policemen are tainted any more than all lawyers and politicians (they receive the brunt of criticism, too) or other leaders and public servants (including clergy and educators.) But, the saying is a benchmark by which we all ought to consider when determining what we are going to do and why. Are we doing things in order to be true to God for the good of all people? Or are we hoping that God will forgive us while we continue to serve ourselves and think “so we go, so shall others”? God’s mighty men know the truth. God does forgive. He does know the intentions of our heart, mind and soul. But, His desire is that we live without the need for forgiveness because our default nature is no longer sinful but Christ who came into the world to serve and protect.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Nehemiah 3.22, 23a, 24a

“The repairs next to him were made by the priests from the surrounding region. Beyond them, next to them, next to him.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Reading the third chapter of Nehemiah sounds like an Energizer Bunny commercial because it goes on and on. Its continuing manner does not speak of redundancy but of fluidity. As Nehemiah led in the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem after the return of the exiled the plan of success was revealed. It would take a team to complete the effort. No one man, no one type of man, no one profession of man, nor no one association of men was going to accomplish the task with efficiency and expediency. As each one took on the part of the wall opposite or near his home or business or special interest the hope of Jerusalem grew. Of course, it would not be possible without the blessing of God which empowered each to do their share with the available resource provided. But, the building block of truth existed in the power of the team to make good on the claim to rebuild the city wall and restore the Holy City for the glory of God. It became a rallying point and stood as a mighty witness to the rest of the world- friend and foe alike. There are many lessons to be learned from the story of how Nehemiah led the people in the rebuilding effort but I would suggest one application of today’s observation. How is the wall of our house? What is its condition? Whether it is the house of clay, your body, which is to be a temple of the Holy Spirit or the domicile in which you live or the building in which you work or the place where you worship, examine the condition of the walls and begin to effect the repairs. But, do not try to accomplish the task on your own. It takes a team to make the effort efficient and expedient. There is no time to wait in building up the walls of your house. Each person must be assigned their part or it exists in weakness. It cannot be accomplished just by the man of the house who serves as prophet, priest and king of his home. It must be shared as a common goal. Could it include your neighbors? Your colleagues? Your extended spiritual family? Who is it that is a part of your team? Who is set as its guard while the building is ongoing? Is it not God Himself who is your foreguard and your rearguard? Is it not God Himself who has established the ring of heavenly hosts around you to consume the enemy in the time of need? And so it goes- on and on and on for ever and ever until we dwell together in the house of God not fashioned by human hands eternal in the heavens.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Galatians 5.14,15

“The entire law is summed up in a single command: Love your neighbor as yourself. If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

What is the purpose of seeking to convert your neighbor? Is it so they can be like you or so you can put on an appearance of being greater than they? Is it to win them into a Christian fellowship or to highlight their sinfulness. Since we all have sinned then we all stand in the same place on Judgment Day. There is none greater than Christ on that day except for God whom He loves. So we, too, ought to love one another as we love God. How shall we then win our neighbor to faith in Christ? It shall come by first establishing that God-love relationship with them. It is to share from what you have to meet the needs they have. How can you know those needs unless you first get to know them? Do you know your neighbor? Who is your neighbor? What needs do they have? Are you offering only tokens of concern or are they witnesses of an abiding care for their welfare in this world as in the next? Instead, we may focus more on the misdeed of our neighbor which leads them to respond in like kind. How much better is it that we love our neighbor and in the maintenance of that relationship lead them to Christ. Will not then have gained a brother and opened the door to being loved even more? Therefore, mighty men, I urge us all to love one another, forbear our shortcomings with prayer and friendship, and bring praise to our God for ever and ever.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Micah 4:5

“All the nations may walk in the name of their gods, we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

What others do is a concern to us as mighty men of God. We must remain aware of their thoughts and actions so that we will be prepared in the time of need to respond appropriately. But, if their choice is to live life according to the way and wiles of lesser gods that is their business. It will not deter us from our business which is to serve the Lord our God with faithfulness and fortitude. We will continue to reach out to all peoples who are in need. We will do so in the name of the Lord so they will know of our intention and our identity. Our purpose is to proclaim the glory of the Lord and His desire for all people to know Him as their Heavenly Father. Their choices will not deter nor impede our choice to serve God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Deuteronomy 18. 22

“If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Mighty men of God, speak with the confidence of the gospel. You do not need to contrive a message in order to appeal to the people so they will listen to you. Instead, plant the seed of the gospel and allow its truth to grow inside the people. They will come to see the truth for themselves and decide to believe and obey or doubt and suffer. It is not your responsibility to make the decision for them. Decide for yourselves how you shall live according to the truth which is alive in you. Deciding for someone else only gives them the wrong idea about what is being said. Appeal to their heart with the yearning of your own heart. Is the yearning of your heart for God, to do His Will and share the blessings which He has given you so that your days may be full and your hope complete? If it is then others will see that and believe in the truth of the words you speak. If not, then you will stand in judgment yourself in their eyes in this world and in God’s eyes in the Kingdom yet to be fully revealed. So, instead of telling people what might be the negative consequences of their actions or inactions, let them know what you will do because you are motivated by God’s love for you and them. You cannot control the actions of others for long, but you can master your own with the grace of God. So, proclaim the truth of God that you know can happen- love mercy, do justice and walk humbly before the Lord your God.

September 23, 2011

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Mark 1.15

“The time has come, Jesus said. The Kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the Good News.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Believe the Good News, mighty men of God. The Kingdom of God is near! As the Kingdom of God draws nearer so, too, does the end of the rule and reign of sin draw near. It will only be eliminated after the 1000 year reign of Christ. Sin’s time has come and is going. Give thanks to God for making that happen. It hasn’t happened yet however. But, when Christ came into the world the Kingdom of God came on earth in such a mighty way that the demons and evil spirits trembled in fear. Some were bold enough to speak out to challenge Jesus but they soon begged for mercy and were banished from the earthly realm. If you are witness to their vile presence in life today recognize they are in their death throes. They know there is no chance of victory. They hope you do not know that truth as well. As long as you believe in their power and authority their demise is put off a little longer, the end of their terror is postponed. But, you can silence them with the authority and power of Christ who has given it to you when you repent and believe the Good News. When the proclamation of “the Kingdom of God is near” is given it does not necessarily mean the end of the world is near. It could come at any time, even our Lord does not know the hour nor the day. But, Jesus does know that the Kingdom of God is more and more revealed each time His mighty men share the truth of the love of God, His healing forgiveness and the wealth of faith and works which give hope and peace to a world struggling to make sense of its existence. Jesus was not speaking solely about a specific time when He declared the Kingdom of God is near. He was speaking of a condition. His proclamation was a declaration of truth “The Kingdom of God is here now and more available to you than ever before.” That is exactly what the doctor ordered and the enemy hates. Come on, mighty men of God, let the Kingdom of God be nearer than it has ever been before! Say it, do it and be it!

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

2 Corinthians 4.7

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Channel surfing provides an interesting snapshot of human life. I came across a show that focused a pawn shop in Las Vegas. One item brought in to be sold was a 1921 vintage of Dom Perignon champagne. Initially there was tremendous excitement because the label on the bottle and its condition said “valuable and possibly priceless.” However, under closer inspection, the bottle of champagne had been rendered valueless except as a conversation piece because it had been handled improperly in the wrong temperature and in the wrong position. Our lives as mighty men of God can be assessed in the same way. What had been placed in us from before our birth was the spirit of the living God. It was actually the seeds of the fruit of the spirit. If properly cultivated and nurtured that fruit would be known as “new wine” of the Spirit of Christ. There is nothing in this world that can produce such a taste for life that is eternal and abundant. There are imitations but in the end, they cannot match the vintage of the Kingdom of Heaven. But, even if we are those bottles of “new wine” from our inception, if we do not maintain that fruit of the Spirit appropriately it will become bitter and foul. We must maintain the correct temperature of our heart, soul and mind toward God and man. We cannot be cold-hearted nor inflamed with passion. We must keep ourselves just right. Equally important is the proper position. For a bottle of Dom Perignon that position is vertical so that during the fermentation process still ongoing in the bottle nothing is lost. As God’s mighty men we ought to remember to be prostrate before God in prayer and service. It will allow the spiritual fermentation of the fruit in us from God to mature into something that does not only appear to be priceless but is priceless and ready to reveal the full body of God when it is time to serve and not be served.

September 21, 2011

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Acts 22.28

“Then the commander said, ‘I had to pay a big price for my citizenship.’ Paul replied, ‘I was born a citizen.’”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

As truth is told, the Apostle Paul, God’s mighty man in the early Church, was a citizen of three kingdoms. To his benefit, he used the fact he was born to Jewish and Roman parents as an opportunity to share the gospel on a far greater stage. While his hope was to reach out to Spain and Britain, he at least made it to Rome with the opportunity to address Caesar himself. He would not have been able to do this if he was not a Roman citizen and continued to make his rightful legal appeal whenever he was tried in a Roman court for his activities. When in Rome do as Romans do. He preached the gospel which was offensive to some of the Jewish population in most any town he visited. But, they had little legal recourse on their own. Their charges ended up before Roman authorities. Paul pushed the right buttons to get the job done. But, in his dialogue with a certain Roman centurion who had charge of his imprisonment in the region of Asia, he made the assertion that he was born a citizen of Rome. He did not have to pay a price for that right and privilege, unlike the commander of the guard. But, every mighty man of God can see the opportunity provided to speak of that third citizenship which came from being born into the spiritual kingdom of God. Jesus Christ paid the price for our citizenship. Regardless of what the world may say about us as believers in Christ and His followers, the ultimate judgment over us is God Himself through the glory of His Son and our Savior, Jesus the Christ. What good news this is to all the disenfranchised people of this world. In Christ, they can become heirs to an era of prosperity and peace unknown in the conjuring of this world. They have a privilege of knowledge of the fellowship of the Most High God who welcomes them into the Kingdom through faith, hope and love. We are all then, as mighty men of God, citizens of that same Kingdom and empowered to defend the wealth of that realm and share it with all those in need of belonging to something that is eternal and good.
