HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Mark 9. 34
“But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.”
REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:
Did the disciples really think that Jesus was not aware of what they had been arguing about? Did they think that by keeping silent they could hide from him any conversation? What is it that we think we are keeping from Jesus? What do we think that Jesus doesn’t know about us as long as we don’t talk about it? Immediately after Jesus asked the disciples this question, He sat down (the position of a teacher) and confronted them with their own conversation. Too many people are afraid to believe in Jesus and God because they do not want to be held accountable for their actions and their thoughts. If there is no God then there is nothing to fear. But, if there is nothing to fear then why hide the truth from anyone? This is how sin corrupts the heart s and mind of God’s people. It makes the truth feel like a lie and something to be ashamed of. The truth is that God, and Jesus, know our thoughts and our actions. Nothing is hidden from them. Their hope is that we will not live as if we are hidden from them. One day we will face the truth about ourselves, even the ugly and unfortunate parts of our lives we would much rather forget. We would hope that God would forget, too. Forgive and forget- isn’t that what we say is the way we should live with ourselves and one another? The truth is that we do not forget very well no matter how much forgiveness there is. God knows. God remembers. But, He remembers more His desire to free us from the burden of hidden truths and the means taken to make it possible for us to no longer be afraid of telling God the truth so that our real forgiveness can be known to us and to God.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Isaiah 29.13
“The Lord says: These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips but their hearts are far from me.”
REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

As I power-walked the streets of San Francisco (I will feel this later), I was not surprised to see the variety of people already “in the world” at 6:00 in the morning. It is my normal habit to greet people with a “Good morning” and the typical Texan nod of the head or a two-finger wave or a “God bless” with a vibrant smile. I am used to getting at least a smile or a wave back. But, I suppose at 6:00 in the morning that isn’t going to happen and probably it is safer for people to not respond to strangers especially. But, as God led me to HIS Word for today, I am reminded that while we may put on the appearance of friendliness and godliness, it isn’t until our actions measure up to our appearance that there is a change in the hearts of men (and women.) I was praying that a homeless person might come up to me to ask for a handout. I didn’t carry money with me on the walk, just my hotel passkey, but I was ready with the treasure of Peter and John’s ready response when a lame man came there way as they went to the steps of the temple to gather with other Christians. “Silver and gold have I none,” Peter responsed, “but such as I have give I thee: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” I guess it might be a surprise to them and I would pray God’s mighty power of providence and provision on them. They might also be disappointed because all they got was prayer as it was not what they would expect. But, I would hope that taking the time to stop, listen and pray would make all the difference in the world for them. It didn’t happen today but there is always tomorrow as I tackle some different streets. How about the streets you will travel today, mighty men of God? What will you be doing and expecting to do?

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Luke 11.42

“Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Service in tithe only. Was that the mark of those mighty men of God called Pharisees? We read throughout the gospels of Jesus’ warnings and admonitions against the Pharisees. They were the self-appointed law-minders throughout the nation of Israel and wherever Jewish people had gathered to live outside of Israel. In some way they were the “covenant police” of the Law of Moses. As mighty men of God we can have a tendency to be so legally-minded spiritually that we are not graceful in our proclamation of the gospel. As I read and pray over this passage of scripture, and the entire dialogue Jesus had with the Pharisees, I am reminded that being graceful is measured by what we do for others and not by our fulfillment of obligations. The Pharisees were not perfect. I believe Jesus did not have a problem with that at all as he called them into true accountability. We all have sinned and fallen short in comparison to Christ but Christ was not into the comparison business. He was in the “love of God” business. The fact that the Pharisees tithed a tenth of their produce was not only legal but fruitful. However, they did not extend themselves far enough in the service of God’s people. If the Pharisees were to be anything, they should have been over-extenders of God’s mercy and justice. But, they tried to convince others that they should be measured by the Pharisees word more than the extension of God’s promise. These same Pharisees would have scoffed at Jesus when the rich young man heard “sell all you have and give it to the poor.” The Pharisees were good at managing the status quo of Israel in its day but they fell short of the status quo of the Kingdom which is forever. So, we must heed this warning as well being God’s mighty men. We cannot allow our service to God and God’s people to be a matter of tithe only. Our service is to be tithers, at least ten percent of our earnings should support the maintenance of the work of the Church in its administration and in its outreach. Our service is not to be tithers only. We must extend the love of God through mercy and justice. I think we understand mercy well enough but do we really practice justice? Do we see it legally as the Pharisees or do we see it spiritually as Jesus? For the moment, let the challenge exist that we should give of our tithes and offerings because it is right and good to do so and then do the work of mercy in hands-on ways for God’s people in need.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Colossians 2.9-10

“In Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Imagine as a Christian that you are bursting at the seams because you are all you can be in Christ. Oozing with joy. Oozing with faith, hope and love. Bursting with fruit of the Spirit dangling from all your branches reaching out to the world. Glowing with the glory of God as a shining light set on a hill to be seen by your neighbors. You are so full in Christ that you cannot contain yourself. It isn’t about wanting to give your all for Jesus because you will have no choice. If you are truly full of Christ others will be gathering around you like bees to flowers gathering sweet nectar. But, even more, it is true for the Church as it is for each individual member of it. As the gathering of mighty men who are full in Christ grow in number so does the power of the Church begin to waft fragrant as an offering unto God. It is then imperative that we all Christ to fill us completely. We cannot hold back any part of our lives in reserve as if we fear that the truth of faith might one day prove wrong. Surrender yourselves to the desire of God in Christ which is for you. Be full. Be free. Be the mightiest men of God since Christ Himself walked the face of Palestine and up the road to Jerusalem to take on the cross of our salvation.

July 15, 2011

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leviticus 3.1

“If someone’s offering is a fellowship offering, and he offers an animal from the herd, whether male or female, it is to be an animal without defect.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

God’s mighty men are called to give of their best to the Master. Whatever we offer in the service of God in our tithes and offerings should represent our place before God as well as our gratitude for God. In the days before Jesus, tithes and offerings were given with the intention to honor God and to gain forgiveness for sins. They were meant to cover a multitude of sins. But in Jesus our multitude of sins have already been covered. So our offerings are thanksgiving contributions and witnesses of how God now sees us. Without worry about the burden of sin which was indicative of our former nature, we can give the best offering which can do the best work and provide the best for God’s people. God doesn’t need our money. God needs our money to go to work building up the body of Christ unto its fullest measure and the community of faith to its greatest productivity. If we give a debilitated and flawed offering then the work it will do will fall short of its intended purpose. If our purpose was to be limited in our effect for God that would be a sin. God gave us His best, Jesus Christ, so that we, as God’s mighty men, might be the best. Consider your offerings today and every day. Is it your best? Does it bear true witness to who you are in Christ? Does it reflect the measure of your faith?

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Matthew 17.27

“But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for My tax and yours.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Is anything impossible for Jesus? It was not unusual to find small objects in the mouths of what is now called “St. Peter’s fish,” a tilapia. They were known to pick up small pebbles in their mouths to build their nests in the shallows in early Spring. Stories have been told of finding bottle caps and coins in the mouths of these fish. It is extraordinary that Jesus would be able to direct that certain fish who had swallowed a loose coin to become hooked on Peter’s line. I suppose it was just as possible for Jesus to have pulled a coin from behind Peter’s ear. This was not magic, however, nor happenstance. This was a directed ministry of evangelism. Jesus did not wish to offend the temple tax collectors who were soliciting funds for the upkeep of the temple especially in preparation for Passover. But, their desire was to especially gather taxes from those who were outside Jerusalem as a reminder to those men twenty years of age and older that they were still part of the spiritual nation of Israel. Jesus empowers Peter, the original fisher of men, to make good the claim that Jesus paid His taxes. Jesus not only paid His obligation but Peter’s as well. Jesus also paid for us, too. His life, an atonement for our sin, relieved us of the burden of sin that taxed our lives and made us obligated to the laws of men which served more their livelihood and purpose than God’s (“the sons are exempt.”) But Jesus shows that not even He is exempt from the penalty of sin even though He was without sin. He is the Lord of the Sabbath, the Lord of the Temple, the Lord of Heaven and Earth. Yet, He makes it possible for us to fulfill our duties to men as well as to God so that our ministry is enabled to reach into all the world. Later, Jesus would teach “give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” As God’s mighty men, we are called to serve man and God. What we lack, He will provide so that we can complete our ministry, fulfill our calling, bring hope to others and glory to God.

July 13, 2011

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Psalm 90.1

“Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Can we truly consider ourselves homeless when our dwelling place is with God. The shame that there are so many who do not have shelter for protection from the elements. The shame that there are so many who live in houses but are not at home. No matter where we find ourselves we must be at home in our hearts, mind and spirit with God. He is the head of our house and household. He provides our daily bread and meets our urgent needs. When He is at home there is nothing to fear and all relationships blend into acts of worship. Yet, as God’s mighty men, we are challenged to open the eyes of the despairing and repairing to see how they can come home to God through the word and deed of Jesus Christ. God’s mighty men must be building strong foundations of faith, hope and love around the cornerstone of Jesus Christ. They must be building up the body of Christ, the temple of the Almighty, on each foundation so that the people of God do have a physical house to make a home. They must mentor others so they will be able to establish their home as the dwelling place where God rules and reigns. Come on, mighty men of God, let’s turn these homes into communities of faith, hope and love all around the world.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Jeremiah 4.12

“[God says]My people are fools; they do not know Me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they known not how to do good.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I am glad to say that God’s mighty men are leading the way to change. While it is still true there are people, cities and nations who are acting as senseless children without understanding doing more harm than good, the Church is a blooming witness of faith, hope and love bringing the colors of the kingdom to bear upon a gloomy landscape. Wisdom is gathering her children from the four corners of the world and in the meeting tremendous worship is being lifted up. Out of that meeting life changing service is being directed. Out of the fellowship, sin is being brought to light so that it may wither and die as the weed it is while the trees of life are taking deep root and preparing to produce a harvest of spiritual fruit to provide for those hungering and thirsting for righteousness.

Thanks to the mighty men of God, the world is a far better place for so many people than they could imagine. Is it perfect? By no means. Is it improved? It is improving because the hands of God, His mighty men, are at work spreading the gospel in word and deed. Keep up the good work and keep God proud.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

James 1. 5

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

One of the last things any of us want to hear are words declaring our lack of wisdom and knowledge when we ask a question. Of course the answer to a question or a resolution to a problem may seem obvious to them but their perspective is not the same as ours. It isn’t easy to just volunteer “I don’t know” because of the way some people respond. Instead of compassion and a willingness to teach and instruct they turn to demeaning language and behaviors as if that will provide the inspiration that sparks awareness and “aha” moments. How wonderful it is to know that God doesn’t respond with “okay, dummy” whenever we go to Him in prayer seeking wisdom, knowledge and encouragement. Whenever a request was made of Jesus for healing and understanding, he took time out and ministered directly to the request. Generally, Jesus affirmed the person simply by saying “Your faith has made you well.” Believing that Jesus was the great teacher who had the means to an end, the answer to a question and the hope to calm all fears was enough to invoke the blessing. Those who act in faith are already showing themselves to be wise. Wisdom then is more than a blessing. It is a blessing maker. Asking Jesus with confidence, trusting His compassionate reply, is the key which can unlock the doors of opportunities so that blessings flow like a mountain stream of living waters. So, while you may have knowledge, mighty men, seek wisdom from God as to how best put the knowledge to good use. Asking for help from God doesn’t make you weak; it strengthens you to be His faithful witness in all situations.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Psalm 120.7

“I am a man of peace; but when I speak of peace, they are for war.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Was the psalmist a man in the wrong place at the wrong time? It is a terrible feeling to believe that any one of your choices for life was just wrong enough to put you into a compromised situation. It is easy to ask “Why am I here? What did I do wrong?” These are those times when being afraid of introspection that would highlight your wrong you cry out in an un-Joblike manner “What did I do to deserve this, God?” The psalmist was enlightened even when he was in the wrong part of the world. It demonstrates that God makes Himself visible in all places and in all times. The psalmist was blest with the vision of God’s Word allowing him to embrace the ways of peace. In the midst of people who saw their only recourse as fighting against the world and those who see themselves as enemies, the psalmist rued his place alongside them. Being with negative people can become a tiring experience leading to a despairing life. It is in times like those that the mighty man of God must keep his focus on the kingdom while watching the world. His hope is in the Lord.

The truth may be that the psalmist was actually the right man in the right place at the right time. He could have been the voice of reason that provided the needed balance to stay the desire of others to go to war. Without his voice to counter their dissension they may have acted on their thoughts and desires and ended up in worse condition than the one they found themselves in. It is important for the mighty men of God to maintain the voice of God. They must speak with wisdom even if it is not the popular opinion. Receiving the strengthening of God as He speaks through the Holy Spirit, the mighty men of God will be the air of buoyancy in sinking world. They must not despair of their situation but take heart that God has not turned a deaf ear to them. He has not forsaken them. In the midst of your desperate situation, hold fast to peace and give thanks to God who is your strength and hope.

ABIDING IN HIS PRESENCE THROUGH PRAYER:

Father, we know that You are aware of the many desperate situations in which many of Your mighty men find themselves in. Yet, they will accept each of these situations as opportunities to break bread and speak truth. Bless them with courage and insight and fortitude so that Your Word can be heard, received and prosper. AMEN.
