HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Luke 11.34

“Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body is full of light. When they are bad, your body is full of darkness.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I remember a story of three sons who were given a challenge to fill a room completely with an equal sum of money. The three sons headed to town to find the means to complete the challenge. One son heard the honking of geese. He left the road, went over the hill and found a large gaggle of geese. He made arrangements to purchase all the feathers and took them home. The others continued their walk when the second son heard the bleating of sheep. He left the road and went down a path leading to a shepherd with a large flock of sheep. He made arrangements for as much fluffy wool as he could purchase and took it home. The third son made it to town and searched everywhere for what would meet his father’s challenge. As he went in and out of shops he came across a mother who did not have enough money to feed her family, buy shoes for her children and milk for the baby. He was moved by her situation and made arrangements to cover the cost. When he delivered all the goods to her home he noticed it was already late in the day and soon it would be dark. He had only enough money to buy a couple of candles and a few matches to light them with to guide him on his way home. Meanwhile his father and older brothers were sitting at home in rooms not completely filled. As the hours passed, the father became concerned thinking that something bad had befallen his youngest son. Just when he decided he would need to go out and find his son, the younger son walked into the house and found his father and brothers weeping in a dark room. The moment he walked into the room the light from the candle filled the entire room. The father leapt for joy at the return of his son whom he feared was lost. His joy was doubled when he realized that the son had been able to do what others thought was impossible. Where his brothers had spent their money to provide for themselves, he had provided for others. The light of his service fulfilled his father’s challenge. Mighty men of God, do good for others and bring in the light of life to fill the world with goodness.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Proverbs 10. 16

“The wages of the righteous bring them life, but the income of the wicked brings them punishment.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

We are aware that the wages of sin is death. Those who commit themselves to the rule of sinful living are bound to be ruled by the product of sinful living. Sin is a consummation of life. Sin is not a giver of life. Sure, the enemy will make promises of reward to those who will follow him. He will work to convince you that your life is better for trusting him and forsaking God. It has been that way since the beginning (reference Adam and Eve for the point in case.) But, Jesus proved what the end of a life can be when He faced death on the cross. He died just as all have died. But, the promise of God was that we shall not die forever. He raised Jesus from the grave and restored to Him the keys of the kingdom. These keys are the wages of the righteous. They are the keys of faith, hope and love which are given to every believer. These wages have no tax taken from them. There is no retirement deduction for the future of the righteous has already been paid and full. The mighty man of God has already been retired from living in the world and is no longer bound to struggle daily to survive in it. The mighty man of God is living in his true retirement years by serving daily in the kingdom of God on earth as it will be in Heaven. Are we living as if we are Heaven found? That is right, I said “Kingdom found” not “Kingdom bound.” If we are living as if we have already found the Kingdom in our midst, just as Jesus promised, then our earnings from the Kingdom work are building up into abundance just as He promised. We have nothing to fear in this world because our living is not truly derived from the wages of “earthly labor.” It is true that our work looks strangely like the work of others who have not yet discovered their place in the Kingdom. But, it is how the work is done and for what purpose that begins to make the difference and pays dividends for the believer in God and follower of Christ. The mighty men of God make investments into life without asking for anything in return. For those acts of faith, hope and love, our boss, God Almighty, pays us well in an abundance that allows the giving for living to be generous. The same cannot be said for those who have made the decision to put the enemy at the helm of their lives. They are sailing into dark waters on the slave ship of Sin. They will work all the days of their lives and seem to fall deeper and deeper into the debt of sin whose wages are death, eternal death. The choice seems clear as to which boss is preferred. Find your kingdom job description and be bound to Jesus and free from sin.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Job 4.12

“A word was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper of it.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

It remains a common concern for those who seek God out believing and those who want God to seek them out so they can believe- “I want God to speak to me.” My first inclination in reflection on this admission “I can’t hear God speak” has been David’s experience of wisdom from God to “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46.10). I can think of so many scenarios in our lives where our busy-ness to resolve the issues of life which confront God’s people lead us to lose focus on where God is speaking to us. We may ask for signs and wonders but we continue to look at the signs of the world in such literal terms that we miss the signs of the kingdom in spiritual terms. But, I have spoken to this before and HIS Word for Today speaks at a different level of reality when it comes to “listening” to and for God. There is a reason to be still when God sometimes, or more often than not, speaks in a still, small voice. Jesus’ advice to His mighty men, the disciples, was to go into his prayer closet and pray. In the closet with the lights out and the door shut can create that sense of aloneness which stimulates the senses. Unable to see in the dark, with no use to move one’s hands because everything should be known as to what is in the closet, being surrounded by familiar smells which settles the sense of taste and smell gives way to the sense of hearing. All ears are on God who speaks into the depths of our heart, mind and soul. If God’s Word is so deep as if dwelling at the bottom of the well of everlasting truth and life then we must truly listen to hear it as it draws us in and as we draw it up.

Job declared that a word was secretly brought to him. I cannot help but think of the “telephone game.” Remember when you would whisper a phrase into the ear of the person next to you and it continued around the circle until it got back to you. The fun of the game was to see how the message had changed. Sometimes it changed naturally because of the distractions each person perceived, especially if everyone else was not quiet. Sometimes it changed unnaturally because someone decided to make “something out of nothing” leading to a perverse and falsely humorous message. But, the defeat of the enemy in this game was to be quiet, reduce distractions so that each person could hear what was being whispered. Of course, some people just can’t whisper. God not only can but does. He wants us to listen. He wants us to focus. He wants us to get the word He has for each of His mighty men to be straight from Him and not through a circle of people. It certainly may start that way but there will be a moment when it comes straight from God. Job considered that he caught a whisper of it. Try whispering your testimony sometime. Be persistent and you may find that someone is listening. The human ear loves to hear whispering because the mind believes it is missing out on something and is just insecure enough to believe the whispering is about him, or her. But, if the whispering is from a mighty man of God as it was from God for Job, then someone will catch of whisper of God’s truth and want to catch more.

In a world full of shouts, yells and high impact noises, it is a whisper of hope that breathes a breath of new life. Draw near to God and listen. He is speaking. He doesn’t have to yell at you for your soul to hear it. Its barriers are pierced by the succinct penetrating Word of God who loves you.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

John 18.38

“’What is truth?’ Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, ‘I find no basis for a charge against this man.’”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Truth is not subjective as Pilate led himself to believe. Jesus had already confronted Pilate, whose greatest perceived ally was politics, with his politicking with the Jews when He asked “Is that question your own or others?” There is only one truth and that is perfectly revealed in Jesus Christ who declared “I am the Way, the TRUTH and the Life.” In fact, Jesus was the embodiment of God’s ultimate revelation about Himself. That is why Jesus would teach His mighty men, the disciples, that “if you have seen Me, you have seen the Father for we are as One.” There can only be one truth. Of course, how the truth is adopted into one’s own heart and mind does place constraints on the truth. How the truth is applied can be equally parceled out so that it is not the full truth. But, there is only one truth and to deny it leads to serious consequences in one’s own life and in the life of the world. So when Jesus answered Pilate that He was indeed a King and that is why He came into the world, Pilate could only accept the truth as he knew it for himself- to be ambiguous and up for discussion. What one man thinks is truth is another man’s folly. Pilate’s answer showed his fear to admit the truth because it would have placed him and his position with Rome in jeopardy. You cannot have it both ways. You must choose one and leave behind the other. Pilate’s answer showed that he would not be able to accept Jesus as the Christ, his Christ and Lord. Pilate lived out his version of the truth and found no good end; ultimately he could not please anyone including himself. Jesus also lived out the truth and found God’s richest blessing pleasing God and bringing salvation to all those who would accept the truth and declare it fully as their own. If you were to face Pilate’s question today, mighty men of God, what would your answer be and how does your life reveal it before all the world.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Isaiah 40 6, 9b

“A voice says, ‘Cry out.’ And I said, ‘What shall I cry?’ The voice answered, ‘You who bring good tidings, lift up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, ‘Here is your God!’”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Current research says that a baby’s cry is the most ignore-resistant sound known to animals, including man. It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that the cry of an baby is usually a sign of distress and great need. Hunger. Fear. Aloneness. Loneliness (yes, they are different.) Pain. Each and more are reasons why we cry out. It is usual to imagine that a cry is a signal of distress. It is, by definition, a loud vocal sound meant to draw attention. As God speaks to Isaiah directions for his prophesying, a voice orders “cry out.” Isaiah has plenty of reasons to cry as he thinks upon the desperately lost situation of God’s people. Remember, he is a man of unclean lips among a people of unclean lips. I can certainly imagine that even that mighty man of God may have uttered a few color-filled phrases when he looked and listened to the sinful exploits of the nation of Israel. His honored friend, King Uzziah, had died. He went into the temple to make his petition to God. Doubtless he went crying and not as a stoic, passive observer. There he was met by God’s majesty and upon his confession had a burning coal to his lips by one of God’s angels. I would be crying before the coal was close enough actually touch me because its heat would precede the actual coal. Yet, there is no record of Isaiah crying in pain and anguish except for the people of Israel. Maybe his desire to answer God’s call, “Whom shall I send?” was in part due to the miraculous fact that his lips and face were not burned. Rather, his heart and spirit were set on fire for revival and renewal of the people of God. It was as if Isaiah and God were saying “Cry? I will give you something to cry about. I will give you something to say that will draw attention from all the corners of Judah, Israel and into all the world.”

As God’s mighty men, we have reasons to cry in distress. The world we live in is a beautiful world that has become sinfully stained and polluted with corruption. Yet, in all that darkness which persists to the joy of the enemy there is a light which the darkness cannot consume nor contain. God’s mighty men are to cry out a signal of warning against the approach of the enemy whose burning coals of hate will scar the flesh, mind, heart and spirit of man. They are to cry out a signal of awareness that there is one who can and will aid them in their cause for peace and restoration from the damage already done by the works and wiles of the enemy. They are to cry out a signal of joy for the victory already won in Jesus Christ, the victories won daily by faith in Jesus Christ and the victory yet to be one by God’s Holy One united with His people in a final overthrow and defeat of the enemy so that his touch or threat of touch cannot hurt God’s people any longer. Now that is good news. So, mighty men of God, do not ask any longer what you are to cry about. God has given you the answer, “Here is your God!”

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Ezekiel 31.18

“Which of the trees of Eden can be compared with you in splendor and majesty? Yet you, too, will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth below; you will lie among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword. This is Pharoah and all his hordes, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

No one is exempt for the power, majesty, might and justice of God. There are no exemptions from His presence in this world or the next. We all must, and will, face the moment of decision before God. Fortunately, for God’s mighty men, there is one who will be their advocate and give His voice for theirs. They must, and will, answer for themselves with a declaration of mercy and honest profession of unworthiness. Even the greatest of earth must recognize their situation of peril because we all have sinned and fallen short of the glorious expectation of God. God’s mighty men are like the many trees of Eden. Each was created for a wondrous purpose and placed in the Garden to bring goodness to the lives of humanity. Yet, even the most majestic of trees, to which shall we compare ourselves today, is subject to the fall for none shall live forever save by the grace of God. In our greatness we must find humility. In our ability we must find the opportunity to serve. In our might we must recognize our weakness. In our hope we must find Christ who alone is the Way, the Truth, the Life and the Light of all men. Let our decision today be for the pursuit of greatness for God’s sake and none other but Him.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Job 1.22

“In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Do you know what I think is the most popular game played today in the world? An athletic sport like soccer, baseball or basketball? A board game like checkers, Monopoly or Candyland? A card game like blackjack, Texas hold’em or gin rummy? None of those games are currently my suggestion for the answer to the question. I believe the most popular game played in the world is the one people play on others called “You are to blame.” Yes, I am talking about the Blame Game. The pointing of fingers at everyone else, including God, and especially the Devil declaring they are the reason why our lives are miserable. Interesting that it remains popular today for the person blaming others for the wrongs in life to immediately take credit for the good things that happen to them. Those who play the blame game have little intention of implementing the changes in their own lives to overcome the tragedies and obstacles which confront them. The Blame Game is a dangerous one because it means that the blamer is not taking any responsibility for their lives and it denigrates the lives of others. Most of all it removes the hope of God from the opportunity to be known in their lives. If anyone had a right to participate in the Blame Game it would have been Job who lost virtually everything because he was one of God’s mighty men. Remember, I said almost everything. Most importantly he kept his faith in God. He did not blame God who is the author of the goodness and greatness in life. Nor did he blame Satan who is the author of lies and deceptions. He didn’t blame himself either. Instead of the Blame Game, Job chose the Claim Game. He claimed God as supreme and loving and faithful. He endured the hardships and sought the truth and face of God. He overcame the challenge and found the manifold blessing. Now that is a game that should be popular everywhere- Give God the Glory!

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Matthew 6.12

“Forgive us our debts as we have forgiven others the debts owed to us.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I certainly hope we hear the qualifier in this plea and prayer for forgiveness which Jesus taught His disciples. Forgive us as we forgive others. Later Jesus would share the illustration of this point when He spoke of a man with a great debt that he could not repay. Yet, the man to whom he was indebted forgave him everything. However, in turn the man who was himself owed a sum of money demanded that debt be paid and since it could not the man should be thrown into debtor’s prison. When the man who forgave the debt heard about what happened, he called the first man in and sentenced him accordingly. Consider the ramifications of choosing not to be forgiving whether it is debts, trespasses or more poignantly- sins. Imagine the burden some of God’s people must feel because they are being forgiven in the measure they forgive others. An inability to forgive others maintains the burden of the debt we owe. How can God’s mighty men declare the freedom from sin and the liberty received in the Spirit when they hold in account the future welfare of others? As Jesus taught His mighty men to pray about forgiveness, He put forth the appropriate priority of thinking about forgiveness. Before we can receive forgiveness we must be forgiving.

1) We must forgive ourselves. If we hold our sins against us, then how can we open wide our arms to embrace the forgiveness God desires to bestow on us?
2) We must forgive others. If we spend so much time thinking about what others have done to us that we cannot see how we have most likely responded in a negative manner, then how can we consider positively what God desires to do for us? The burden of blame and shame is overwhelming. Heighten it with self-pity and God’s love is degraded.
3) We must seek God’s forgiveness honestly. If we do not realize that once and for all that we cannot truly be a forgiving person without the presence and power of God’s faith, hope and love then the cycle of forgiveness will operate as if it is broken. All it takes is a simple request and a simple trust. Doing so will lead one day to an understanding that our forgiveness started when Jesus declared on the cross, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” But, when we known then the full force of His forgiveness will cleanse away the stain of sin and release us from its penalty of death.
4) The measure we give is the measure we get!

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Joshua 20.2

“Establish cities of refuge so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Doesn’t apply to you? Sometimes we forget how harsh our words of “just kidding” and “constructive criticism” wreak havoc in the lives of others. Equally powerful and destructive are the words of omission where someone needed care, encouragement and support but a deaf ear, blind eye and a cold shoulder was turned. We cannot forget the rich young ruler who received the key to the kingdom from the Master but put it down and walked away because it cost too much. How much is a life worth? God’s mighty men know the answer to that question. A life is worth a life and the value of that life is Jesus Christ. He is preparing a place for all those who have sinned against man and God and killed their hopes for eternal life. Oh, don’t participate in the lie of Satan begat in the Garden when he told Eve, and a listening Adam, “Surely God will not let you die.” He just had to point out the kill switch. It was as simple as that. There it is, push the button and see nothing will happen. In the literal sense they did not die; at least not on that day. But, they died spiritually in shame and guilt. They hid themselves from God as if His eye could not penetrate the darkness that covered them and the nakedness which exposed them. God had created a place of eternal peace, love and joy. It was theirs for the taking. Instead, they chose Tree #1 and found the “zonk.” Did not die? Sin ruled. Rebellion spread. Murder ensued and cover-ups prevailed. Times have not changed. But, Jesus is preparing a place for all those who will admit to their sin, confess their weakness and need for God to save them. Intentionally or unintentionally each person who has sinned has killed someone even if it is only themselves. But, we have the opportunity to pick up the key to the kingdom and follow Him. We can find that the key opens the door to our mansion made in heaven by the Master Carpenter’s hand just for us. God has made the promise and the provision. Jesus sealed the deal.

ABIDING IN HIS PRESENCE THROUGH PRAYER:

Father, we would be lost without You today. We could live a short life on earth and die eternally in Heaven except You love us. You do not will the death of anyone but grieve over those who do. Thank You for opening the door of eternity to us and invite us to come and stay with You. Accept our words of confession and profession and empower them to become keys to unlock the hearts and mind of others so they can come along for the joy ride of their life, too, in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Romans 14.1

“Accept one whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

There are a lot of conversations in the world today on controversial issues. Some people are just controversial and adversarial because they can. To enter into the argument doesn’t actually resolve the controversy. It doesn’t mean there is no solution to the issue but arguments are usually heavy with emotion and lacking in wisdom. We may take issue with peoples’ choices because they do not agree with ours. We may stand on wise ground or on emotional ground. It means that we must be very careful to know why we believe what we believe and what the purpose of it is. Remember, the purpose of God’s mighty men is to bear witness to the resurrected Lord so that others may come to Him as their Savior. How foolish it is to try to introduce someone who doesn’t know Jesus with arguments of discipleship. Discipleship comes after the relationship is established. We, too often, jump right into the “thou shalls” and “thou shalt nots” without establishing the groundwork and framework of faith, hope and love. I believe that once someone has that working and walking relationship with Jesus Christ they begin to discover the differences between the right and wrong choices in life. It is then that we may be able to assist with how to maintain the difference as a disciple of Christ and a follower of Jesus. So, our first need as a mighty man of God is to accept without judgment. The only discernment needed is to find out if they believe in Christ or not and if they have accepted Him as their personal Lord and Savior. At that point we can walk with them through the garden of life sharing the blessings that exist for our goodness, our healing and our prosperity. But, if we establish our relationship with judgment then we may miss the roses and the berries because of the thorns.
