HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Psalm 19. 32

“It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I had this vision of the futility of sin which showed Satan each day writing down our sins in the book of life so proud of his accomplishment of testing men and finding them failing. He spent his energies looking for the negative and rejoiced in bringing them to light. Each evening after he went to rest on earth, Jesus would come and tirelessly erase them all so that we each had a clean slate to begin the day new. One day Satan showed up and found each page printed with “Paid in Full.” Beside each name was this printed promise. Try as he might, Satan could not erase the mark nor could he write over it. He tried to tear out the pages but found them bound by the strands of love which could not be broken. As the end of day neared he saw Jesus the Christ approaching. His anger caused him to shake and turn beet red. He said, “Why have you done this?” Jesus replied, “Because I am the only One who decides who gets into Heaven and who does not. If they refuse the gift I am offering them they will be yours on the Day of Judgment.” Frustrated, Satan returned to earth and started a new campaign which differed from the first. His first campaign was to get man to live in sin and fall short of the glory of God. That campaign was defeated by the blood of the Lamb who was slain for our sins. His second campaign was to convince God’s children that the promise of God in Jesus Christ was a lie: He did not live among you; He did not die on the cross for you; He was not raised from the dead by God’s love to live with Him forever.

Mighty men of God, it is God alone through Christ who makes our way to Heaven possible. He knows of our sins and failures. He knows our struggles and trials. He has also made it possible for us to have forgiveness by mercy and renewed opportunities to live faithfully by grace. We cannot live as if the promissory note of Christ is a lie! Our debts have been “paid in full.” Neither can we allow Satan to communicate that the gospel is a lie so that others will believe there is no hope for them in this world or for the next. Our responsibility and opportunity is to be armed with His strength of faith, hope and love to fight the good fight declaring His Word is true, righteous and faithful. It isn’t just for some. He makes the way perfect for all.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Hebrews 12.3

“Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow
weary and lose heart.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

It would be disastrous for one to lose heart especially with the understanding of the heart as the seat of reason, will and spirituality. This great symbol of who a mighty man of God is critical to the ways and means of discipleship and ministry. From the utterance of Jesus on the night of His betrayal saying “Not My will but Thine be done” to His “You have heard it said, but I say unto you” teachings in the Sermon on the Mount there is a tremendous revealing of the condition of Jesus’ heart for God and for God’s people. Even on the cross, the greatest expression of His spirituality, He did not lose heart crying out “Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing.” Of course they knew what they were doing in the physical realm- they were putting an end to a life which they perceived was a threat to their own future as subjects of Rome. That leadership of Israel had lost their heart for God in a compromise to physically exist until old age in a state of “even if” instead of keeping their heart by not compromising their spiritual existence in the Age of the Kingdom which would know no end. Jesus, however, would show His desire to not compromise His heart for God and God’s people even if it meant death on a cross. He bore the accusations, trials and tribulation of “sinful men” of God because it was His purpose to live out the life He had been teaching others to live. Death was not a mean end to life but it was an end to the means, the determination, to live fully for God. Jesus was not heartless nor was He cowardly. He was both heartful and mindful of the means and the ends of life. He did not possess the prophetic “heart of stone” which had to be removed and replaced with a heart of flesh, renewed in its spirit to be with God. The piercing of His left side as He hung from the cross showed that He had a real heart of flesh and blood. He was not made of stone or wood or some obscure material with which an idol could be fashioned. He was a real man of God whose heart was strong to the end because His spirit was true. Only when He surrendered His Spirit into the hands of God did He become weak enough to die. That surrender did not show cowardice nor fear but courage and faithfulness.

I think about the Wizard of Oz character, the Cowardly Lion, who though he was the “King of the Forest” did not believe He had the courage in himself. For his own self image he remained afraid but when Dorothy, who loved him and respected him, was threatened, his true nature and character was revealed. He had not lost his heart. Rather, he had not yet found it in its entirety. For his acts of bravery in defending Dorothy and defeating the Wicked Witch he received a “badge of courage” to symbolize his true nature and identity. We all need something to believe in. God’s mighty men need to take heart and believe in themselves. They need to take hold of their spirit and believe in God. Jesus bore the marks of the cross which revealed His willingness to obey and trust God with His whole heart. God’s mighty men bear the sign of the cross to remind them they have nothing to fear in times of trouble, accusation, trial or tribulation. They are not alone nor can they be defeated. Stay strong, mighty men of God and take heart for yours is the cause of Christ and the will of God.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Isaiah 46.10a

“Be still and know that I am God.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

When confronted with a challenge great or small our first inclination is to jump into the fray and just handle it. All too often we speak too quickly, act too abruptly and end up creating more challenges for which we become directly responsible. As God’s mighty men our first inclination and resulting decision is to stop, pray and then live out the prayer believing that God is indeed God. How many of us are still wondering when God will answer our prayers? Did we drop our concern off in the outbox and hurry down the hall of life to keep on working? Did we believe that God was truly going to love us enough to accept the passing thought and ignore the concern? If we believe in God enough then we must trust God enough to speak back to us. God’s mighty men must come “face to face” with God. All eyes must be on Him. Where our focus goes so goes our attention. Isn’t it interesting that if our eyes are full forward so are our nose, our ears, our mouth and our heart? That means all of our senses are oriented toward God. God, having our full attention, and man, being capable of receiving His message via any of these senses, can then more clearly communicate. We may have become so focused on doing our job that we moved beyond our “hearing” distance as God was speaking wisdom and promise to us. We moved forward without instruction. We marched without direction. We acted without knowledge. We thought without wisdom. We believed without allowing God to be God. All I can say is “Oops, wrong.” But, all is not lost. God’s mighty men must come to a halt when they have a concern worthy enough of God’s attention that we would consider it prayer-worthy. If it is then as you pray, stop. When you stop, listen. When you hear “Thy will be done,” believe and know that God is God. He loves you enough to meet the concern but He does not want to do so without you going with Him. Be still and know that He is God.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

1 Thessalonians 5.25-27

“Brothers, pray for us. Greet one another with a holy kiss. I charge you before the Lord to
have this letter read to all the brothers.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

God’s mighty men, following the teaching from HIS Word for today, are encouraged to make three practices a part of their life routine: pray, show spiritual connection and share together in the Word.

First, pray for those who have brought the Word of God to their attention and hold them in accountability to living in the Word. We must be grateful to those who found it so important to share the Word that they committed their lives to doing so. This does not mean they had to be pastors or evangelists but that they were Christ-followers to pastured and evangelized.

Second, greet one another with a holy kiss. Akin to the kiss on both cheeks we often see in France, at least on television, and throughout the Middle East, although I am not sure how friendly many are today due to the current state of unrest, the Christ-followers should show a level of community that expresses agape love as a greeting and celebration. The “holy” kiss was not meant to be misinterpreted as having any erotic connotation. Instead, it was a means of bearing witness to one another and to onlookers that these Christ-followers were joined together in the family of God as brothers of the Christ. They shared a kingdom connection not of this world.

Last, but not least, they were to share the Word of God they had received with one another. It was the purpose of the community of faith to edify the entire body. Sharing the revelation of God’s desire which had come to them was meant for the whole body. Just like the many gifts of the Spirit, God provides so that we might be better able to serve one another.

As God’s mighty men put these practices into action the world will definitely know there is something different about life which the world cannot comprehend. It will be that Jesus Christ is Lord of all and those who believe in Him are glad to show it, share it and live by it.

February 23, 2011

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Acts 4. 31

“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled
with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Jesus taught that where two or three were gathered in His Name His presence would be with them. The number was significant because it meant the meeting was considered a true witness. Team work even in doing God’s will is important. Jesus sent His disciples out to preach in teams of two. They did not have all the special knowledge and biblical training as rabbis to complete their work. They did, however, have the presence of Jesus with them under the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Their job was to promote peace, heal the sick and declare the day of the Lord in making the path straight for Jesus who was coming after them to do great things. In their report after the mission great things were already being done. Anticipation was high for what was to follow. So it was when Peter and John had been released from prison. Those who gathered to remember them in intercessory prayer rejoiced together at the witness which these two were able to offer. Their release was a great thing. But, a greater thing happened as they rejoiced in prayer and gave a witness of thanksgiving to God. The place where they were meeting began to shake as the Holy Spirit was released and the word of God was boldly declared.
Can I have a witness? God’s mighty men are the precursors of something greater happening because they continue to join together to do His will and give thanks in prayer for what was done and for what is about to be done. Expect a greater thing. Even Jesus told His disciples that they would do greater things than He did. It did not mean He had exhausted His “great thing” inventory. It did mean that there was much more yet to come. It has been said that there is no “I” in team as a reminder that we must not remain solo in our lives of faith, hope and love. I say there is an “I AM” in team when it gathers together in the name of Jesus. If you believe that give thanks to God for what is yet to come whenever the team gets it together.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

1 Chronicles 11.10

“These were the chiefs of David’s mighty men- they, together with all Israel, gave his
kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the Lord had promised.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Just as David had his mighty men upon whom he could trust to fulfill the work of the Lord which was given to them, so God has His mighty men. He trust them to fulfill the work of the Lord which is given to them demonstrated by His mightiest Man, His own son Jesus the Christ. He was fully man and fully God. He was, is and will always be One of a kind. But, as Christ-followers, God’s mighty men are of His kind called Christians, “ones of Christ.” They are given to be leaders and builders of a mighty community of faith so that the Lordship of Jesus Christ will extend over the whole earth. It is not as if His Kingship does not already cover the earth, it most certainly does as He died for the sins of all recognized by those who would believe in Him. But, it is the benefits, the fruits of His reign that must be delivered throughout the world so others can know of His infinite mercy and grace and be covered with His banner of love. God has made the promise of eternal life and a dwelling place with Him on earth as it is in Heaven. In that place there will be a prosperity of peace that the world can never give regardless of its efforts to do so. These mighty men do not need to create this kingdom as it already exists. They do, however, need to lay claim to its presence in their midst and live as rightful citizens of it. The key is working together with the whole of the new Israel which is the body of Christ, His Church. God’s mighty men need to be known as collaborators; collaborators of faith, hope and love.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Proverbs 20.12

“Ears that hear and eyes that see- the Lord has made them both.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

The faithful are urged to have ears that hear and eyes that see. It is not merely a call to have regular hearing and vision checks although that is a good thing to do regardless. God’s mighty men are called to make sure they have their spiritual eyes and ears checked and maintained. The wisdom and purpose of God is not hidden as many might think and as the enemy often accuses. God delights in His children discovering the way, the truth and the life of righteousness. He has given them a book of knowledge, a lab book if you may, which describes the process of maturation which His children have undergone throughout the ages. Those with spiritual eyes and ears are able to read the book, search deep into its message, pursue its challenges to know and do more and then find for themselves the joy of fulfillment in God’s purpose. He has created the senses for that purpose and through it His children learn more about themselves and their God. God wants to be found, known and invited into the lives of His people. He does not want mindless, wandering sheep but mindful, purposeful shepherds who raise future generations of God-fearers and Christ-followers. Be glad that God has fearfully and wonderfully made you and put your faculties to good use in seeing Him, hearing Him and serving Him.

February 20, 2011

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Matthew 7. 21

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but only the
one who does the will of my Father who is in Heaven.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

What have you done for Him lately? This is not to say there is anything wrong with preaching the Word, teaching the Word, singing the Word, writing the Word but until God’s mighty men are also doing the Word and being the Word it could be asked of any of them “What have you ‘done’ for Him lately?” Toward the end of Matthew’s gospel of Jesus’ ministry (the end of what is identified as Chapter 25), there is a teaching about rendering aid and assistance to the ‘least of the brethren’ being akin to doing the same for Jesus. Jesus identified Himself with all people regardless of the socio-economic status but especially with the poor and the outcast because they had the fewest resources available to them in the world. Of course, God has always had a heart for the “underdog,” the least of these. Israel itself was seen as one of the lowly nations, or at least in its self-perception. Yet, the world around it feared the God of that nation even if they did not fear the people of that nation. When a person, community, nation or even world seeks to become greater than God there will be a calamity the like of which has never been seen. When the people of God are one in heart, mind, soul and spirit, then the fear of the Lord is their protection and provision. God’s mighty men, then, are those and known as those who are doing God’s will and showing its activity of grace when all else seems to have failed.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Matthew 7.3

“Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in
your own eye?”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Since Jesus was a carpenter’s son, I love this translation of “why try to remove a speck of sawdust from your neighbor’s eye with a plank in your own.” Reminds me of a man who went to the doctor complaining of eye trouble every morning. After quizzing the man and his wake-up routine, the doctor suggested the man might take the spoon out of the cup of coffee before drinking it. It is always advisable to take a hard look at ourselves before making a snap judgment on others.

February 15, 2011

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Ezekiel 18.1

“The word of the Lord came to me; ‘What do you people mean by quoting this proverb
about the land of Israel which says the fathers eat sour graps and the children’s teeth are
set on edge?’”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

The taunt of Israel’s enemies was to enable the belief that the current generation of God’s people could not escape the journey begun by their parents and their parents before them as far back as they could remember. It had been a teaching of warning to a first generation to be aware of their own actions as they would create consequences on future generations. Perhaps the design was to persuade that first generation to walk in paths of righteousness of His name’s sake so that the past would be forgotten and the future pursued passionately. But, the life of the world is filled with opportunities to see mistakes as inescapable and solutions as beyond our grasp. How many times have we heard, or perhaps said ourselves, words that reflect on the influence of a past relative on a current generation that focused on the wrong done and now repeated? Such words heap burdens on the present generation and binds them to failure or at least the impossibility of success. Yes, many of us have been treated unfairly or inappropriately by the generations which have preceded us. We can excuse our behaviors as being the products of our “social environment.” But, God brought this saying to mind to break the bondage and set the prisoner free from the past. Just because it happened to us does not mean that we are forever doomed to unrighteousness! God declared that “this” would no longer be said among you because He was creating a new first generation. In Christ Jesus, we each have the opportunity to be a part of the new first generation. Think of the benefit of being one of the first born in God. As the first, the first born is the one who inherits the father’s provision for the future and not the burden of his past. In Egypt during the days of Israel’s liberation under the leadership of Moses, the first born were slain because of the iniquity of the royal father of Egypt, Pharaoh. But, those who were the first born of God’s people were saved by the blood of the lamb. So, are we saved by the blood of the lamb, released from the burden of the curse to start the journey again toward the future. In Christ we can blaze the path of righteousness for the generations to follow us so they can know what it means to be a part of the “new first generation environment.”
