HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Leviticus 16. 10

“But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord to be used
for making atonement by sending it into the desert as a scapegoat.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

It is All-Hallows Eve and all through the land
There’s creeping and stirring on the strings of death’s harp by a ghostly hand.
The darkness is alive, the shadows they taunt, as stories fill our ears of eerie visitors and the
houses they haunt.
Strangely carved pumpkins are lit with care awaiting small goblins, princesses and
superheros to visit them there.
Offerings of candy and fruit and ghoulish gifts await behind closed doors for those who
dare approach as if they are walking on squeaking floors.
Boo! Gotcha! Trick or Treat, they reply as the hope of full bags to guard them against
the night is their hope and cry.

Is this what All-Hallows Eve was meant when it first was conceived?
To celebrate demons and goblins and life-stealers greed?
Do we remember the evil that lurks beyond the touch of the light?
Do we remember the purpose of All-Hallows night?
To drive away spirits whose intention is harm, to bring forth a light that will sound the alarm,
to cast away things that go bump in the night so that all that is righteous and holy and good
will have room in the light
Isn’t this real purpose of these strange celebrations that has swept through the land and all across
nations?

Keep your eye on the prize, the true prize that has been given from our Lord God who sent His
Son down from Heaven.
He came to this earth to free us from sin, the haunting of death in its spirit-sapping din.
He came to make it possible for sinners to be saints, to give hope to those who are drowning
in complaints.
So that any and all who will confess Him as Lord can rise up in victory by the power of
His Word,
“Where, o death, is thy victory; where is thy sting” the faithful and mighty men will triumphantly
sing.

So heed the teaching that sin is cast out.
Let the freed children of God jump up and shout.
May the new song of Heaven that came down to each one
Bring hope to the weary and peace through God’s Only Son.

ABIDING IN HIS PRESENCE THROUGH PRAYER:

We thank You, Father, that You have shown us the lack of power death and sin have over Your loved ones. We thank You, Father, for including us into the realm of saints. We shall walk through the valley of the shadow of death today because that is all death has to offer or threaten the saints. But, we will not dwell there nor shall we allow any to do so as well as far as it is possible for us to secure. We shall persevere the battle with hearts, minds and spirits that are pure. And in the morning when we rise up there shall be such a sound that will fill all earth
and heaven from sky to the ground. It shall bring joy to Your ears and hope to the world that
“Jesus is Lord and through no other shall eternal life be found.” AMEN.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Ezekiel 18. 31, 32

“Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O House of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

If we learn nothing else from this Word today it will be that awesome realization that we cannot live in this world upon our own merit and abilities and hope to enjoy the completion of the promise God has made with each of us. Even in the days of fantastic surgeries and heart transplants becoming more successful we have no hope of knowing freedom from sin and its awful consequences without the spiritual intervention of the Great Physician. I read recently of a young man who had received a lung transplant and died of lung cancer. It was not because he continued as a smoker but because the transplanted lung was that of a smoker. It was said that in that country it was not uncommon to use vital organs that may be flawed in some way as transplants for others who are trying to survive the effects of their own defective organs. But, even if a heart was unscarred and could function for years and years, it could not guarantee that the recipient’s life would then be changed spiritually. Although I have no doubt many have changed because of the gift, sacrifice and support. That is further proof that we cannot go it alone in this world.

The good news is that when we sinned, as we struggle in sin, God did not and has not given up on us. God does not wish anyone individual to die without His love, mercy and grace. God’s desire is for life, not death. I have no doubt that God would rejoice if the enemies of life would repent as well and live changed realities. It cannot happen, however, unless we are willing to repent and truly live. Turn around from the direction that leads to the eternal cemetery and follow the path of life that leads to the Kingdom of God. God calls each of His mighty men to turn away from sin and live the life of Christ. He is our new heart who has shown us how to love one another. He is our new spirit who teaches us how to use the keys to the kingdom put into our hands as Christ-followers. Without Christ in our lives there is no hope of truly enjoying this life (which isn’t always about us) or the promised life yet to come. This is our message which our lives should be telling the world. Mighty men do not let others go through life alone without a fellow believer and not without the greatest believer in man who is God revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

2 Timothy 4. 1-2a

“In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view
of His appearing and His kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word…”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

How much do you talk about Jesus to others? Actions may speak louder than words but if the context of our actions is not known then the silent words remain silent on God and the focus on the ones doing the actions. As God’s mighty men we are called to preach Christ, crucified, dead, buried and resurrected; seated on the right hand of God full of glory, dominion and power; who lived in Heaven first, gave up His throne to dwell on earth as men with us, showing us the Way, the Truth and the Life and returned to Heaven by the grace of God whose love is fully available to each of us as it was, is and shall always be to His Son who is our Savior who has made us Sons of the Most High God through His sacrifice out of faith, hope and love.

Okay, that is a mouthful to say but it is what truly defines our actions as mighty men of God. It is out of our awareness of Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God, who has saved us from the consequence of our sins as we live confessing and professing lives for Him before all the world. It is our opportunity to share the Good News with others motivated by our thankfulness for God’s mercy and grace. We are obligated only out of our love for God through Jesus Christ. We do not preach the Word because we want to be saved or so that we will remained in a saved mode. We preach because we are saved and we want everyone to be saved with us. Our words do not save. Only “the Word” can save. That salvation is already available but not everyone knows it. They will know it when we tell them of Christ. They will know it more deeply when they see our words and works combine into a life that glorifies God and demonstrates the joy and purposefulness of living a life that is free from the domination of sin. But, until we lay claim in our speech and with the Word, our actions may look good but will not necessarily point out to others the Christ of God as John the Baptizer did at the Jordan while he was preaching “Repent, the kingdom of God is at hand.”

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Psalm 22. 26

“The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the Lord will praise Him- may your hearts live forever!”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Here is another thought on the question “Why should I go to Church?”

When Church is done for the glory of God more becomes right with the world than wrong. The psalmist understood this concept as he considered what God was going to do when He redeemed Israel from the consequences of sin they had wrought in the land, before the world and before God Himself. Psalm 22 is one of those prophetic words which was laying the foundation and groundwork for God’s greatest act of love since creation. The fulfillment of that act of love was then personalized for David as he wrote what is now Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd.” Doing Church right allows the focus to come off of human lives as the source of survival and fall onto God as the source of revival.

We are revived when we have enough to eat and no fear of ever going hungry again. Hungry people who eat in fear gorge themselves until they are sick. There may be mighty men who do not have this fearful hunger experience but who understand what it feels like to “plop, plop, fizz, fizz” at Thanksgiving and Christmas when the tables are full and stomachs are overfilled. For those who are stuck in survival mode there never seems to be enough food. The hungry learn to expect to eat less and less until starvation overcomes them. Yet, the Christ has fed the spiritually hungry people through the Church, the body of Christ, with an everlasting manna from heaven as much as He has provided living water that shall never cease flowing. That is why David could write Psalm 23 because he provided his flock the same guaranteed provision as God was providing him. We go to Church because we find our spiritual food there, yes, but also because there are people in all stages of life who are looking to be fed. There will be shepherds and sheep and God joined together when the glory of God is sought.

It is for that purpose, God’s mighty men also attend Church so that God can be praised with fullness. As lives are revived in the filling of spiritual stomachs (and literal ones as well), thanksgiving is a natural response. We move from survival to revival. Hope is built up fulfilled promises of daily sustenance. When we go to Church, when we “do” Church on a daily basis, then hope is kindled into an eternal flame that warms the hearts of all those who are seeking the Lord for more than just a daily handout. What “Church” will God’s mighty men do today?

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Mark 14. 21

“The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him. But woe to that man who betrays the
Son of Man. It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

The course of events for the Son of Man was scriptural and prophetic. Spoken hundreds of years before the events themselves the Word of God was going according to the plan of salvation of which God was the author. Jesus was the portrait of God’s love and mercy, sacrifice and greatest gift. He was obedient as God’s mightiest man to God’s mightiest call.

But, there was always hope for the people of God who made their promises to God and then fell away. The promise of ultimate judgment and destruction, the loss of life and property and a place in the kingdom of God on earth was severe but mediated by the ultimate grace and forgiveness of God. That grace was most poignantly established in Jesus Christ. Yet, there will come a day when the consequences of our actions will no longer be avoided. While we as God’s mighty men and beneficiaries of His mercy and grace plea and abide by those gifts for ourselves and for others, we also know that a day is coming when there will be a separation of good and evil forever. Jesus declared that reality when He gathered with His disciples in the Upper Room and knew that Judas would betray Him. It was not recorded in the Word prophetically until this moment. Jesus had become a dividing line between the old and the new. He was the standard by which all men would be considered.

For God’s mighty men the question becomes “Will you portray Him or betray Him?”

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

John 1.1,2

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was
with God in the beginning.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

The Word of God exists in a spoken, written, inspired and incarnate form. As Christ, this Word of God is the substance of faith and the sustenance of hope and love. We, as God’s mighty men and as Christ followers abide by the Will of this Word which is to love one another as God has loved us. His Word declares this as our greatest commandment to obey, our greatest act to offer others and our greatest witness which we are to proclaim. Love is the reason for our existence from the beginning to the end. As the writer of the Gospel of John begins to unveil this Word to his congregation he establishes that the Word was more than a text on a page or a message passed on from generation to generation orally. The Word was, is and will always be a living entity existing in the midst of the people of faith. As it was in the beginning, it is our hope it shall remain throughout eternity and the witness of the resurrection proclaims the validity of the hope. We have such hope because God loves us individually in a mighty way. He has singled each one of us out to receive the full benefit and effect of His love made known through Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ of God, the Messiah of Israel old and new. Because we have received that love in faith and shared it to the best of our ability (which hopefully improves day by day) with others whom we love equally and individually then we, too, continue the witness of God’s Word, God’s Love and God’s promise that “the one who believes that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God and accepts Him as personal Lord and Savior” shall live.

In times when death seems just a breath away in our relationships, our finances, our work and in our lives, it is good to know that life is in each breath we take as we are inspired by the Holy Spirit of God to become a part of that life-living and life-giving existence in the flesh as in Jesus and in the Spirit as one restored to being a son or daughter of the Most High God as in Christ. We, as God’s mighty men, give thanks to a living God who is a God of the living who has overcome death with love which was, is and always shall be the will of God for us.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Isaiah 8. 3-4

“Then I went to the prophetess [Isaiah’s wife] and she conceived and gave birth to a son. And
the Lord said to me, ‘Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz [“quick to plunder, swift to spoil”].
Before the boy knows how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the
plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

(Part 2: Thankfulness)

How long does it take for God to answer your prayers or fulfill His prophetic word? We all would hope that answered prayers would come in the moment and most prophetic words would be delayed [only because they seem to contain some element of destruction which is not always true.] But, experience informs us that many of our answered prayers seemed delayed and that we are always living in the midst of prophetic fulfillment as we observe the signs of the times. In both seasons of prayer and prophecy, God’s mighty men must be patient and thankful.

Without thankfulness for what God is doing or has not done yet but will do it would be easy to take our eyes off the prize. What is the real prize of a spiritual life? There are benefits such as the presence of the Holy Spirit to guide, comfort, instruct, empower and re-teach us in the ways of Christ throughout our daily walk of faith. We should never overlook the benefit of eternal life with God whose kingdom is in the midst of those who celebrate His Word with worship, praise and service. Even in the world today, Jesus has taught that the Kingdom of God is in our midst. Paul’s look into love declares that we see in part today but the day is coming when we shall see it completed and full. Such declarations are affirmations of the seasons of prayer and prophecy which move according to the perfect will and timing of God. I believe that points to the greatest benefit of eternal life which is “God is with us!” When Jesus was born one of the names given to Him was Immanuel meaning “God with us.” God is with us. He knows us inwardly better than anyone. He knows the choices we can make and do make even before we make them and is providing opportunities for us to learn from them and grow deeper as Christ followers. He knows the formula for eternal life is love, trust and obedience. Most of all “God with us” means that God is here in our time, in our place and on our side. As it is written, “If God is with us then who can truly be against us?”

Well, we actually know the answer to that question. Jesus warned His mighty men that aligning themselves with Him will not always be seen as an asset in the eyes of those who are against God, godliness and God-fearers. He instructed them that they would face doubts, questions and persecutions because of Him and their commitment to follow Him. Peter and Thomas had already declared “Then let us die with Him” on the march to Jerusalem. But, in the face of trial and tribulation their words became less confident. Sin has that strange effect on people. Sin creates an unnatural separation between God and His chosen. That separation is evident in that lack of thankfulness which sprouts up like weeds following a fertile rain. We can see the green and from a distance mistake it for grass. Upon further inspection we can see the weeds growing up in the midst of the grass (or biblically speaking, the tares among the wheat.) Weeds are like the doubts, fears and tribulations that spring up in our lives. They can create distance between man and God so that the prayer yet to be answered seems so far away and the judgment which has been prophesied seems so very close. This is what the enemy desires for God’s chosen to experience so that they might become ill-at-ease with God’s plan and call to faithfulness and begin to act for themselves to become selfish in their pursuit to have fulfilled wishes and less prudent when it comes to avoiding judgment. Thankfulness in seasons of prayer and prophecy is a declaration of peace which comes in knowing that God is giving exactly what is needed, when it is needed and how. It may be in the moment or down the road but the anticipation bound with faith, hope and love bears witness to the simplest reality of life-giving that commits to and declares boldly “God is with us.”

the beloved disciple” as a means to question the integrity of His Word for Today [ I will
declare here that another way to look upon the “beloved disciple” is that it leaves a place for
each of us so that we can find ourselves in His ministry, in the Upper Room, in the courtroom,
at the Crucifixion, in the Empty Tomb, in the Upper Room again, at the seaside and engaged
in ministry to widows and orphans of a literal and spiritual designation. Thus declares the
Lord our God!]

How long does it take for God to answer your prayers or fulfill His prophetic word? We all would hope that answered prayers would come in the moment and most prophetic words would be delayed [only because they seem to contain some element of destruction which is not always true.] But, experience informs us that many of our answered prayers seemed delayed and that we are always living in the midst of prophetic fulfillment as we observe the signs of the times. In both seasons of prayer and prophecy, God’s mighty men must be patient and thankful.

Without patience the answer to our prayers might be missed as we look for “our” answer instead of God’s or we lose focus on the goal and become easily distracted into forgetfulness. I am reminded of the words between Jesus and Peter following His resurrection appearance at the lakeside. Peter asked about the future of the “beloved disciple.” It would appear Peter begged the question because Jesus had given Peter a difficult teaching about his own future as he lived into old age. At the end of the teaching, Jesus declared to Peter, “Follow me!” It didn’t matter what the “beloved disciple” had for his future as it concerned Peter but what Peter’s understanding of his own life would be. As the first century came to a close, the early church struggled with the application of what they assumed was Jesus’ teaching concerning the “beloved disciple.” Their hope in times of trouble which they were facing was that Jesus was going to return before the last disciple, the beloved John, had passed away. They were looking for vindication, salvation from hard times, or justification of their faith by the sign of Jesus’ return. However, they missed the point which was Jesus’ call to ministry and service was the true answer to their prayer of “how shall I live and how shall I die.” What Jesus said to Peter was “If I want him to remain alive until I return what does that have to do with you. Follow me.” It certainly didn’t mean John would live till Jesus came in the apocalypse but it could have. What difference does that make to God’s mighty men who are called to live in faithfulness, giving of their best to the Master and being obedient to His word and commission? We can pray for God’s will to be done. We can present our petitions for how we would like for things to happen and when. In the end it is God’s agenda: time, manner, place and purpose.

Imagine how Isaiah must have felt when he heard God’s prophetic word delivered to him concerning the overthrow of Damascus and Samaria and the assumed liberation of Israel. He may have thought, “Wow, get a scroll, write a name observed by two witnesses and presto- instant answer!” Now, I do not think that is what he thought but imagine then if he did what he must have thought after his wife gave birth to their son and God said “Now give him the name I told you about at least nine months ago.” Had Isaiah forgotten all about it? Was he so consumed with the daily reports from Damascus and Samaria and any word of their demise that he had slipped into slumber about what God had spoken? Was God going to speak now of this judgment on Damascus and Samaria and the finding for Israel? Did he celebrate this long awaited response to the prophetic word? But, God’s answer wasn’t quite complete even at this point because Isaiah would now have to wait until his son would utter “My father” or “My mother” to see the word of God fulfilled. How long, O Lord? Today? Tomorrow? Nine months from now? Twelve? Six months after that? Nine? How long, o Lord, the mighty man of God may ask.

And what will God’s answer be? “If I say now or then what does that matter to you? I say to you now, ‘Follow me.’” And what will the answer of God’s mighty man be? Will it be “Yes, Lord, now and all the rest is in Your hands?” It should be. It better be.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

2 John vs. 1

“The elder to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth- and not I only but also
all who know the truth.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

We are loved not only by God through Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit, but we are loved by those who know the truth. As the Presbyter John writes to the Christ-followers under his shepherding care as pastor and elder, he reminds them they are the bride-elect and body of Christ. It is possible that John was writing to a certain lady in the congregation who provided leadership for the local church. As many Christ-followers met in various homes and there were many women who were called to build up the body of Christ especially as the Church neared the end of the first century, it would not have been unusual. More than likely, however, John was speaking to the Church, the body of believers called together in worship, praise and service under the name of Christ. Christ is the head of the body; that is the leader of the Church, the family, the community of Christ-followers. Those who aligned themselves were likened to the eschatological bride of Christ as Israel was looked upon in prophetic teachings as being the bride of God. She then is the chosen lady and those who are a part of that family of faith are her children conceived in love by the Holy Spirit who continues to reveal the truth of God through Jesus Christ.

As God’s mighty men, we must be mindful then of the paradigm which God has established for us to continue to build up the body and to bear a strong witness before the world about family relationships. Paul spoke of it when he wrote about submission between husbands and wives, parents and children. When men care for their family they are providing nurture for the bride of Christ and the children of faith who belong to that relationship. I do not think we should lose sight of that fact and how many times have we done so. Yet, a part of love is forgiveness and the privilege of being born again into the opportunity to “do it right.” So, in our relationships as families we bear witness to the Church (believers) and to the World (believers-in-waiting) of what God’s expectation should be. Likewise, the Church bears witness to mighty men (believers) and to the World (believers-in-training) to set the example as well. We are mutually accountable to “all those who know the truth” and not just one chosen body of believers but to all Christ-followers everywhere.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

John 11. 3

“So the sisters sent word to Jesus, ‘Lord, the one you love is sick.’”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Some truths we just know in our hearts because the Word of God has spoken from Heaven to earth and it dwells there. Mary and Martha knew the basis of these truths and called upon it for the sake of their brother Lazarus. The basis of all of God’s truths revealed in scripture, in proclamation and in Jesus Christ as well as those who are Christ followers is “love.” Jesus taught that loving all things as we love God fulfills the desire and hope which God has for each of us. Love is the most powerful force in all the world. Mary and Martha knew this and appealed to Christ’s love for Lazarus as the motivation for his healing.

As God’s mighty men, we know that God loves us through Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ loves us as God loves us. His will being that of the Father’s is shared with all of God’s children. Mary and Martha were the intercessors for Lazarus’ healing just as each of God’s mighty men are intercessors for the work of God’s love in others. We must make our appeal to Christ motivated by love, obedient in hope and active with faith. For whom shall you send for Christ to come because He loves them and they have need of Him?
