HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Job 9. 27-29

“If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will change my expression and smile,’ I still dread all my
sufferings, for I know You will not hold me innocent. Since I am already found guilty, why
should I struggle in vain?”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Have you heard of some people whose lives are just too good to be true? It seems as if they live a charmed life where nothing goes wrong and everything goes right. Others have looked to them as the model family set in green pastures by still waters apart from the influence of the enemy to dwell forever in peace. But, as someone once said, if it seems too good to be true it probably is. Satan had that viewpoint when it came to God’s mighty man, Job. His life was good. He was blessed with family and lands and property in abundance. He was blessed because he was faithful to God and therefore his outlook was faith-filled. His friends probably wondered day after day “How can anyone be that good?” Then that day came when Job’s world fell apart and his “friends” began to gloat that “it was too good to be true.” They never could identify what his sin was but there had to be something wrong in paradise for all the bad things that happened to Job.

It is easy for even God’s mighty men to fall into that trapped thinking. Of course, who among us is living that “charmed” life for we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s desire for our lives. Some of us may have great wealth like Job and some may be as poor as church mice. Some people who have voluminous possessions are not righteous and some who have none are very righteous. I used to have a concept problem with the story of Job just like the disciples had a problem with the teaching of Jesus as it related to the rich young ruler. It really wasn’t about possessions great or small or the number of sins one may or may not have. It is really about what we do with what we are given. For Job, in the midst of all his losses, he remained faithful. It did not mean he didn’t question himself or his circumstances, he did. But, he kept God on the throne of his life and submitted to the circumstances which came about because he lived in a sinful world. If there was something he did wrong for which he had no knowledge then his unfortunate loss could have been a consequence. If he was innocent of all wrong-doing, then who was he to question God’s decision. At no time did he blame anyone else for the condition of his life. In his sadness, sorrow, grief and despair, he cast all his hope on God.

What should God’s mighty men do in hard times? The same as they should in times of prosperity! In all things we should not lose our faith and trust in God. We cannot explain why everything happens. We may know of some consequences which are indeed of our own doing. In those instances we know what we are to do in seeking forgiveness and being forgiving. But, what happens when we think we are suffering an injustice that we are innocent? Job declared, “Since I am already found guilty [by the definition of his sad condition or that he is not God and therefore not perfect], why should I struggle in vain [to justify myself]?” What the rich young ruler could not do and thus it seemed impossible to the disciples for sinners to get into heaven if a rich man couldn’t, Job proved otherwise by doing what was right. He gave up his hold on all he had. He had no control over it anyway because it belonged to God in the first place. When he remained faithful even when times and friends pointed to adopting the role of being faithless as a better option, God blessed him again and restored him to his blessing. God’s mighty men can do the same because they have Jesus as their model. He gave up everything, even heaven, to be faithful to God for us. He makes it possible for those who are with sin but seek God’s favor in forgiveness and in being forgiving and thus give up their hold on sin to be set free from the devastating consequence of sin. They, like Job and most of all like Jesus, shall be faith-full because they choose to be faithful.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Titus 3. 9

“But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law,
because these are unprofitable and useless.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

What little I know about the stock market I learned from the Eddie Murphy movie “Trading Places.” Two rich men who ran a brokerage made a bet about their ability to ruin one man who was successful and to make another man successful who was ruined. They placed their entire fortune in the futures market effort that they also sought to control. The futures market is a speculative investment based mostly on what a product, especially agricultural, would do before the product, in that instance the orange crop, was harvested. It was highly speculative unless you had “inside” information. We know the history of those who base their future on insider trading. There tends to be little “future” in it, financially speaking.

Jesus asked “What does it profit a man if he gains the entire world but forfeits his soul?” All the wheeling and dealing and building up of relationships and reputations for the sake of promoting one’s self to make a little more money with the hope of buying a little more security in order to create a little more power to start the cycle all over again gets a person where? In the end, they will end up with less because they lost more. Jesus says, of course, that compromising one’s walk with God in order to promote one’s own world results in the loss of the world and God. What does that leave you with exactly? What then should God’s mighty men invest themselves into?

Well, Paul tells Titus that he should warn Christ-followers to bank on God instead of foolish arguments, dependencies built on trusting whose family had done what and come from where and whose lawyer was best in finding the loopholes. There was not futures trading in that market. It was neither bull nor bear; it was bust. Instead, their future was built on nothing less, which was certainly the more, that Jesus blood and righteousness. Sounds like an idea for a good hymn! Oh yeah, there already is one. Just like there is already one hope, one faith, one baptism, one Lord and Savior of all who put His life, “bet the farm,” on the line of Calvary because He trusted the creator of the harvest, God.

It is useless to trust anything less! It is God’s desire to make all His mighty men successful in the ventures of faith. He does not desire to ruin one man and save another. Through Christ Jesus He set in motion the desire to offer salvation to all men who will trade the world for the kingdom. Christ has shown us that our future lies not in lording it over the world but by becoming servants of the kingdom and doing good. (Titus 3.8)

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

1 Corinthians 2. 15-16

“The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s
judgment: ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?’ [Isaiah 40.13]
But we have the mind of Christ.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

God’s mighty men not only have “ears to hear and eyes to see” but they have the mind of Christ by which they can more easily discern what is and isn’t the will of God for their lives and through their lives in the service to others. Yes it is true that Jesus urged His disciples, and therefore all of God’s mighty men with the truth “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, therefore watch, guard yourselves, so that you will not fall into temptation.” (Mt 26). That seems to say to me that in our human form we still are imperfect beings. We are blessed with the mind of Christ and therefore can see the great mysteries of success which God has planned and purposed for those who know, love and serve Him. We receive that blessing when we enter into that right relationship with Him upon our profession of faith. That blessing urges us to express this new found understanding by being baptized, becoming a part of a worshipping fellowship that actively serves God’s people and lead them to do the same, and to walk more deeply into His Word so that we may know more about Him and thus ourselves. These expressions enable us to be more in the world and not of it just as Christ Himself was when He ministered throughout Israel two thousand years ago. He, too, had the mind of the Lord even though He took on the flesh of God’s creatures and was blessed with the opportunity to show us how to live as we were and are meant to live.

It isn’t easy. Neither is it impossible. Jesus taught at two different times of the possibility which exists because faith is embraced. In Matthew, as the disciples marveled as to how could anyone make it to heaven if a rich man who had everything going for him could not, Jesus said that with God all things are possible. It is obviously not up to any mere mortal to gain the heights of heaven! But, are God’s mighty men mere mortals? No, they are not because they are of Christ who perfectly balanced the reality of spirit and flesh in His life. God’s mighty men are blessed with the same opportunity not on their merit but upon God’s design and desire. In Mark, Jesus again affirmed that by “faith all things are possible.” Faith is a gift from God as well. When faith is exercised that which appears impossible to the ears and eyes of mere mortals becomes possible in the lives of those who choose to believe that Jesus is the Lord. Again, the truth is that only those who fall deeply into the mind of Christ and live outwardly the presence of Christ can see and hear the possibilities of God. Let me give you one more affirmation of this truth which comes from Peter’s profession of Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God at Caesarea Philippi. Jesus replied to his profession, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man [man’s thinking or teaching] but by my Father in heaven.” (Mt 16). Once more we can see that it is with the mind of Christ that we are able to discern the truth of God, the truth of God for our lives and the truth of God for the world.

Live with the mind of Christ. Seek to know it more deeply. There is more to come that will bring us the opportunity to know great joy, almost unspeakable joy. Be ready!

ABIDING IN HIS PRESENCE THROUGH PRAYER:

Father, for the truth that You have made known to us that these mighty men are no longer measured by the standards of the world and no longer confined by the limitations of sinful living we give thanks. We are thankful because that which seems impossible to us is possible to You and to those who live deeply and more faithfully in the mind of the Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord. Come, Lord Jesus, open our minds that we might see the wonders which You have made possible so that greater things than You did these shall be able to do in Your Name. AMEN.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Obadiah 15,16

“The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds
will return upon your own head. Just as you drank on my holy hill, so all the nations will drink
continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

This is actually a warning to those who refuse a warning and an affirmation to those who remain faithful in troubling times. It is a same word proclaimed to all ears but as is oft quoted, “Let those who have ears to hear hear.” Our question today is “What kind of ears do God’s mighty men have?”

Do they possess ears that are filled with stubbornness? If so, then they are not God’s mighty men. The strength of God’s mighty men comes from God alone who makes the land and its people holy. It is not by their possessions nor by their knowledge that they have become mighty in a weary land. It is by their humility and submission to the call of God to be citizens of the messianic kingdom and to walk as grateful children and glad servants of the King of Kings that makes them mighty.

Do they possess ears that are filled with the spirit of God? If so, then they are God’s mighty men. They will refuse to boast over the enemy but pray that their ears of stubbornness be emptied and their hearts become full with the wisdom of God. Their stubbornness has been encouraged by the emptiness of their hearts. The world that fails to see God has filled their ears with false wisdom and hollow hopes. But, the voice of God’s mighty men rejoice only in God. They seek to fill His ears with adoration and praise. They promise to walk in the way, the truth and the life of the Messiah so that others might become joint heirs in the kingdom that knows no end.

But, stubborn ears will not hear these words. Their eyes are blinded to the truth. Just as God alone can make the land and its people who seek to honor Him holy so also must it be for those whose eyes and ears cannot perceive the presence of God in their midst. It will take the faithful obedience of God’s mighty men to be a witness even when they are in exile, strangers in a strange land. It will take their prayers for the enemy and a willingness to serve as they are called to create the culture and climate of change. As they honor God by humbling themselves they are giving a chance for the power of God’s Holy Spirit to move the lost from death to life.

Willing ears hear and take heart in the promise of God. The exile is not forever. Those who continue to dwell in darkness have seen a great light, their vision is being restored and their home is being renewed. Hear, O Israel, old and new, the kingdom is the Lord’s.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Psalm 99. 8-9

“O Lord our God, You answered them [all]; You were to Israel a forgiving God, though You
punished their misdeeds. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His holy mountain, for the
Lord our God is holy.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Love means having to do things that are right even though it disrupts your desire to be merciful and compassionate to those you love. Some people call this “tough love.” I think the psalmist David would have called it “agape” except he didn’t speak Greek. There are times when the most merciful and compassionate act one can render is the exacting of punishment for a misdeed. I think this means even the allowing of certain consequences to happen though it is against our nature to see others in pain. Of course, I am not speaking of intentionally setting out to hurt someone else by creating a consequence with the desire to teach a lesson. Just as there is a law of physics which says “for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction.” there should be a similar law of spiritual physics written that would describe the pushing away from God which results in a false sense of security. Equally, a pressing into God brings about a covering of grace that just gets all over the person who trusts God that much to become totally immersed in faith, hope and love. Regardless, the science is always of God who is the author and creator of reality no matter how we allow it to be shaped.

I heard recently one explanation for why things happen. It all happens with the intention of God to be known as God. Good things happen to bad people so that good people might step in and teach them the mercy and blessing of God. Good things happen to good people, too, for the same reason. It really isn’t about a works righteousness attitude. It is more about remembering God’s desire to bless those who will bless Him before and after the fact. Consequently, bad things happen to good people not so misguided individuals can step in and deride a faith in God but as a reminder that we are sinners, albeit forgiven, living in a world that is terminally ill due to the seemingly irrepressible presence of sin. There is nothing a good person can do in those situations but to remember God is still on His throne willing to save us and that we are to abide in Him always regardless of the situation. But, do not forget that bad things happen to bad people, too. It really isn’t about a punishment. God is not punitive but just. The rain that falls on the just and the unjust can be a bearer of prosperity or a devastating flood that changes the courses of life. Bad people are not exempt from bad consequences any more than they are exempt from grace. Things happen because we are alive in a living world with a living God whose desire is that His children live forever. He hopes they will choose to live with Him forever in Heaven and the world becomes the testing ground of faith in which we show our desire to match God’s desire.

Life happens and it is up to God’s mighty men to teach others why life happens and what can happen when God’s life becomes our life. It isn’t without a price. It isn’t without a hurt. It isn’t without hope. Have faith. Love life. Live with a happening God.

Change each one of these in love so that You can happen to others through them by their faith, their hope and their love for You and Your people in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

SPECIAL NOTE:

I celebrate two years of providing this ministry of empowerment for the encouraging, mentoring and coaching of God’s mighty men in their desire to serve the Living God with each day of their lives. It is a challenge, discipline and privilege to be of service to Him and to those whom He has given these words.

I believe that God is now asking me to move to a different level of ministry beyond the daily study, writing, praying and celebrating service which I have been commanded to share two years ago. I have been blessed with opportunities to speak to these needs and share God’s truths with mighty men and women as our paths have intersected. It is my understanding that a teaching and preaching ministry is about to be restored. There is a season now presented to all of God’s mighty men to stand up and speak out for the building up of the Body of Christ. Adversity is not a sign of defeat but a challenge for victory. The Word must be in obedience to the Great Commission which is given to all of God’s mighty men.

I do know the next venue which will be opened to me and to others who share this same calling. I ask for your prayers of support and guidance as well as the invitation of opportunity to share this Good News for God’s Men. The enemy wishes to silence the invitation and thus mute the call. It is not a call of perfection but a call to seeking perfection which is ours only through Christ our Lord and Savior. If this prayer-male and blogsite has been of service to you, I would appreciate hearing from you. As I launch a ministry called E=MC2 (should be squared) I look forward to sharing it with you and through you as Christ so directs. If you are wondering what this ministry means, it is simply “Encouragement equals mentoring and coaching with Christ” because He increases our lives exponentially in meaning, purpose and vision.

May God be with you in your part of this ministry to God’s mighty men as they are and as they will be in preparation for the restoration of family, country and hope through faith and love.

Thank you, sincerely, Chuck

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

2 John .7

“Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out
into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

God’s mighty men do not misrepresent the truth in their witness. They are not only able to affirm Jesus’ confession which John wrote in his gospel account declaring “I am the way, the truth and the life and no one can come to the Father save by me” but they affirm that the Christ of God was indeed Jesus of Nazareth. We may think that there is some kind of mute point in this profession of faith but this simple reality is a lynchpin to the true nature of every true believer. God’s mighty men are mighty because they serve an empathetic Savior. The Christ of God does not merely have compassionate thoughts about the human condition over which a cover of sympathetic love is cast. No, indeed, the Christ of God is able to identify in a very personal and real way with the struggles of those He continues to call to be His own. This could only be done by one who has lived in our shoes and walked in our way. He has felt the deep burdens and intense struggles of our day to day existence. He felt in His own life the challenge of the world
pressing in against Him, pulling on every emotion, dragging His thoughts to the recesses of fear and smothering Him with frailty. Even more so, this Christ of God bled! He sweated blood in His empathetic desire to set His brothers and sisters free from the burdens of sin which this world so readily seeks to clothe them in so their true nature is hide from themselves and others. He poured out blood as a consequence of His silent confession that in the flesh of Jesus He was the Messiah which the law and the prophets had foretold. He allowed His blood to be shed on the cross of Calvary so that every last vestige of human strength would be used up in order that His obedient Spirit-self could no longer be held in place but would rise up to glorify His Father in Heaven. This was no ethereal image of God or man which the world experienced for thirty-three years. This was flesh and blood spiritual reality as true then as it is in each of God’s mighty men today! Our salvation can only be true when we recognize the true life which has been given us by the Christ of God, Jesus of Nazareth, who gave His life to us. What hope would we have otherwise? Believing in the authentic Jesus Christ empowers the authentic mighty man of God who follows Him because they share the same life, the same hope, the same baptism, the same spirit and the same God. Do not settle for less than the best! We do not receive what was left over and left behind because there was no body and nobody in the tomb on the day of resurrection to receive. It was and will be as He said for each one who chooses to believe that the same will be true for them on the day of resurrection. Preach the Word. Practice the Presence. Praise the Lord.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Isaiah 59. 1-2

“Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear. But your
iniquities have separated you from Your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that
He will not hear.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

We had taken a group of our high school youth group on a canoe trip in eastern Oklahoma. It was a beautiful day. There had been a release of water from upriver so the levels were ideal for
a lazy trip. That was true until we came to a severe bend in the river. The water moved faster at that point than at others and it seemed to move back upstream a little. Most of our group made it without a problem but there had to be one that didn’t. None of us by ourselves would be able to reach them. They were trapped against some of the driftwood from a previous flood stage. It was decided that we would form a human chain and let ourselves float from upriver across to them. We let the water work with us. We were successful. We even came up with an extra canoe that had been lost from a previous trip in the same spot.

I can’t help but think about this story when I read of the prophet’s declaration of God’s ability to save. Because of a poor and inexperienced decision three people were in a precarious position. We could not reach them easily. The current of the water over the rocks and the driftwood made it difficult to hear their concerns or they our advice. Fortunately, the arm of the Lord was not too short to save. In this case it was a linking of arms together that reached out as a team to “save” them. Their lives would not have been lost but there was a chance for injury. In many ways that seems to be the appearance of sin in our lives. We do not see a loss of life but we do recognize the injury. The loss of life, spiritually and physically, is real, however, when sin abounds. If not for the care and concern of others how many more might be lost?

It takes a team, the body of Christ, to effect the recovery effort which Christ has given to us as our mission and purpose. Linked together in faith, hope and love, God’s mighty men are able to reach out to the hands of others trapped against the driftwood of previous disasters. They are able to ride the tide of rising waters to draw them back to safe harbor. On their own the lost have put themselves in jeopardy. They can become so frustrated and frightened by the current situation that they lose sight of the One who comes to them on the water to bring them to safety.
It is up to God’s mighty men to be as the hands and presence of God and reach into the waters of life and connect the lost with the saved.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Revelation 22. 21

“The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

How many movies have you watched where the thought of a sequel seemed to be in the offing?
You noticed there were storylines left incomplete. You had questions that were never answered for characters that were not fully developed. It could be that the editor did a poor job of putting all the shoots together leaving enough out in order to produce a certain length film. We all have learned to develop a fairly critical, if not skeptical, eye when it comes to movies.

What of the end of the greatest anthology ever written- the Holy Bible. In the end we know who wins. Good triumphs over evil. The righteous are vindicated and justified. Those who are wearing the parenthetical black hats do not ride off into the sunset but instead swim off into a sulphur lake. The theme of prophecy is to announce the end and the course of events leading to the end as a type of foreshadowing. Even Jesus comforted His disciples by saying to them, “I am telling you these things now so that when they come to pass you will recognize them.” But, the end of the Book of Revelation is an invitation of promise. In the midst of tough times, even more difficult than the ones many are facing today, there is still an invitation and promise given to the world. Invite the Lord Jesus Christ into your lives and into your world and grace will be yours forever and ever.

God’s mighty men must learn to have a critical, discerning, eye but not one of skepticism. They are to be equipped with eyes trained in confidence. We have been glimpses of eternity in our daily walk with God. We know that God will never fail us. We know that God will provision us for our daily work. We know that God has established a covenant of confidence with us that strengthens and encourages us in good times and times of great challenge. We know in part what God’s grace means and one day we will know it fully and completely. We anticipate the sequel to this life of righteousness and know it will be a production of glory and praise. How does the story end? In fact, it doesn’t end and neither does the promise and invitation of grace which He has extended to us through Jesus our Lord!

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Ezekiel 45. 1

“When you allot the land as an inheritance, you are to present to the Lord a portion of the land
as a sacred district.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

Vatican City sits in the heart of Rome in the midst of Italy as a virtual nation all to itself. It is a sacred district set aside for the specific function of housing the “heart” of the Roman Catholic religion. As the pulse of Vatican City goes so should the heart of the Catholic Church go. In theory that sounds like a good plan but even the best laid plans of popes and kings are soon put asunder. Still, it is based on the concept which God proposes to Ezekiel in the building of the new temple in New Jerusalem. It is a challenge to each Christ-follower and God-honorer to put into practice a similar principle: make a special place for God in the “building” of your life.

Beyond the recognition of the human body as an earthen vessel in which the presence of God lives there is a call to establish a place of residence for God in our lives. It has a specific function that far surpasses warehousing the Spirit of God. It is the place of spiritual labor to minister to God as well as administrate the resources of God. It should represent the “heart” of who we are as mighty men of God. Taking the pulse of this “place” in our lives should be a good indicator on how the rest of our lives are going. Where is this sacred district in our lives?
Is it just our heart? Or is it our mind? Is it an end table or lampstand? Or is it a room? Is it in our home? Or is it in our workplace? Is it an attitude or philosophy? Or is it a practice and discipline? Does it have known limits? Or is it known only to you?

Of course, I can only answer these questions for myself. But, I challenge God’s mighty men to consider where they have created sanctuary for God in their lives. It is a significant place which was described to Ezekiel. Its physical dimensions were nearly seven miles by six miles. The Holy Sanctuary was certainly not that big so it meant that there was far more happening there than is conventional wisdom. As God’s mighty men, leaders of God’s people in all walks of life, we are assisting in establishing the territory of the inheritance of a promised land. That promised land is the presence of God. It is established by Christ as the kingdom of God in our midst where eternal and abundant life is already at work. It is established as the kingdom of God beyond the expanses of the world as we know it into the heavenly realm where it has been at work for an eternity. In a simple understanding and comparison we can say “as Jerusalem was to be for Israel so the Church should be for the world.” If we establish a portion of our inheritance as Christ followers in all our places of influence, then we would find a significant presence of sacred districts across the face of the earth inhabited by many who are coming to know their service to God.

But, we will not limit our declarations of holy ground to those places. We give space to You in our workplace, in our transportation, in our recreation, and in our community. Pour out Your anointing on these places as well so they may become established as spaces of faith, hope and love in the name of Jesus our Lord. AMEN.

HIS WORD FOR TODAY:

Luke 11.2

“This, then, is how you should pray: [Abba], Father, hallowed by Your name, Your kingdom
come.”

REFLECTING IN HIS WORD:

I have heard God called many things. I have heard God’s name used in many ways. I never cease to be amazed about the lack of understanding, and in some cases the lack of respect, people have about the word “God” as if it wasn’t even a name. Each of us have a name. It is packed with meaning and power that is personalized to our life experience and the experiences others have of us. Many of us share a similar name with others in any number of derivations of spellings and languages. Yet, no two names are alike because the people the name is connected with are dissimilar. So, I wonder why so many people believe they can reduce God to just one thing and neuter the meaning and power of His name. It is a commandment, after all, that we should not do so. It says, “Don’t use my name lightly.”

While many nicknames are given with loaded meanings that are not always positive, the fact remains that nicknames and monikers are far more powerful than our given names. Perhaps they should be chosen and assigned more compassionately, with fonder affection and less sarcasm. But, regardless, there is power in a name. As mighty men of God, we are called by one name and it is the name of the One who calls us by name. He is the Great Shepherd and those who are the sheep and co-shepherds of His pastures not only know His Name but they know His voice as well. It is imprinted in our spiritual consciousness as sure as a baby duck knows its mother in a flock of others.

If our prayers were quacks for attention or for help it really is a calling out to be recognized by the one who is most familiar to us. I don’t know if ducks have names (I am fairly confident that is a human trait that is shared only in animation) but there is something in the sound they make that identifies who they are and who they are looking for. It could be that God’s mighty men share a similar trait that makes the sound of their voice as informative. I tend to think the information is only about content and not really directive unless we put a name to it. The more personal and pointed the name, the more the message is effectively transmitted. It is great that Jesus knew this about us when He taught His disciples to pray effectively. Luke shares with us the simplest of all prayer lessons in the reading today. It is the lesson of personalization. It isn’t about bringing God down to our level but getting God’s attention to our level of need. We do not want an impersonal answer. If we did we can Google it. What we want is an answer from a God we know who knows us as well. Such level of knowledge and spiritual intimacy is communicated by the name we use when we pray. Jesus declared, “Pray this way when you pray.” I really believe He meant, “When you pray, pray just like me!”

How did Jesus effectively pray? He prayed directly to God, His Father. He did not call Him by His Name, YHWH. He honored the practice of keeping that Name in its rightful place. It was formal, a name above all names, a name that was so holy many believed it should not be used lightly as in regard to the commandment. So, Jesus did the next best thing. Jesus called on God with the name best suited to describe their relationship, Abba (Mr. Young says “Papa.”) Mighty men of God can be powerful prayers when they get up close and personal with God and God’s people. There is nothing false nor dishonoring when they do. In fact, it glorifies God mightily.
