GOOD NEWS FOR GOD’S MEN

September 3, 2017

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

” If My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.!”  (2 Chronicles 7.14)

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

What is the name of the Lord?  Yes, we can create a list of many names beginning with YHWH, the “I AM,” which was revealed to Moses and through Moses to the people of Israel and to Egypt- the captive and the captors.  A part of that list would include those revealing the character and nature of God such as El Shaddai, God Almighty, and El Elyon, God Most High and Jehovah Jireh, Lord who provides.  We could also include positional descriptor names such as Immanuel, God who is with us, and consequential names such as Yeshua, God who saves.  It can be an extensive list or a short list, it matters not because just as the Good Shepherd knows each of us by name so He is known by us with a name.  And God who is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, has revealed Himself through Jesus as the Christ.  And at His name every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. (Philippians 2.10)

Are you seeing God’s revelation and promise in today’s Word- “If My people, who are called by My Name”?  It is not only the name which is given to us by a God who adopts us out of the dwelling place of sin and gives us His Name so that we might dwell with Him in His House.  It is also the person, My Name, the Holy Trinity which calls us to be His people.  God has shown us the who and the what of our existence as it was, as it is and as it will be.  How valuable is it for God’s people to understand the prophecy of 2 Chronicles which is revealed in the Gospels and is fulfilled in Revelation.  When God breathed life into us so that we are born into the world we are a people called into life by His Name- the power of creation.  But, because of Adam and Eve’s shortcoming we did not humble ourselves as a people and fell into the abode of sin.  When God breathed new life into us He made it possible for us to be reborn in spirit and in truth.  The consequences can still be the same as for Adam and Eve if we refuse to humble ourselves and thus remain in the abode of sin.  But for those who are called by His Name, who will humble themselves and repent, who will cry out in earnest and solemn prayer there is salvation, restoration, reconciliation and eternal life on earth as it will be and already is in heaven.

Mighty men of God, be called by His Name- Jahweh, God our Father; Yeshua, Christ- God of our salvation; and Holy Spirit.  Humble yourselves before all the world so that those in our world, our sphere of influence, can be saved and be called by His Name as well.

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

” As He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him.  And a great storm developed on the sea so that the waves began to swamp the boat. But He was asleep.  So they came and woke Him up saying, “Lord, save us! We are about to die!” But He said to them, “Why are you cowardly, you people of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was dead calm.  And the men were amazed and said, “What sort of person is this? Even the winds and the sea obey Him!”  (Matthew 8. 23-27)

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Mighty men, why should we be surprised what God can do?  Whether we are apprehensive, anxious, fearful or at peace it seems our minds have the most difficult time fathoming the measure of God’s power, mercy and grace.  As often as we may repeat the promise of John 3.16 “For God so loved the world that He gave to us His only begotten Son in order that eternal life might be realized by all those who would believe in Him.”  God “so” loved the world.  You know what “so” means in this context.  As children, we often responded to such questions as “how much do you love me” with stretched out arms and a strenuous “sooooooo much.”  Jesus loved us “so” much, even though we were not yet born, that He stretched out His arms on the cross and declared with His willing sacrifice “so much.”  What power of will and strength of faith it must have taken for God and Jesus to demonstrate such desire as to save each one of us from the legacy and finality of death without mercy and grace!  If God in Christ and through Christ can do such a thing then why do we wonder and marvel at what else they can do because of their faith, hope and love for us and in us and through us and our faith in them.  Remember, mighty men, it takes only the faith as small as a mustard seed on our part to affect the blessing of such mercy and grace into our lives.

Equally so, it only takes that same kind and level of faith to impact the world in which we live.  It should be no more surprising to us, mighty men, that this is the truth than for us to believe in the God who has saved us.  This is the God who created the universe, the world and the life upon this earth out of chaos and nothingness.  If He can order the chaos into the awesomeness we experience today then He can certainly continue to act for His glory and on our behalf for the sake of our life on earth and for eternal peace in Heaven yet to come.

And what of response to the movement and work of God toward us.  If we believe that Jesus was indeed the Christ and is Christ for us today then why do we marvel or question what else can be done?  It is not enough, mighty men, to be satisfied with our salvation.  Our salvation means nothing if we are not putting such faith as it takes to believe in Jesus the Christ into action!  Yes, as the Apostle Paul declared, “faith without works is dead.”  He did not teach that we needed works to be saved.  Rather, that because we are made new and actually improved then we, being akin to Christ who is the head of the Body- the Church and each of us members of that same body can do great things.  Jesus promised this to His disciples as He bestowed the blessing of the Holy Spirit upon them.  As they went out to preach the gospel and performed miracles bearing the Spirit as a cloak it should be no less moving when that same Spirit then became a part of the fabric of their lives at Pentecost.  It was no longer upon them.  It dwelt in them and they became as one just as Jesus was one with the Spirit as the Christ.

What does this say?  I believe it behooves us to center our attention upon whom we have become- ones in Christ.  We ought not center our attention upon ourselves in isolation in the world.  We are not alone.  Christ has made it possible for us to dwell as Immanuel- God with us.  With the power of God in us, around us and working through us we, too, can do great things.  It should not cause us to wonder or dwell forever in marvel.  It is meant to become our default reality as mighty men of God.  Practice the peace.  Practice the power.  Put into action the faith that has been given us so that God can be known personally to all those who are in our spheres of influence.

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

ABIDING IN PRAYER:  Father, You have already poured out Your Spirit upon and into our lives.  We pause now in reflection to allow that Spirit to become as active in us  in the name of Jesus by whom we pray, live and worship here on earth as it is in Heaven as it was in Jesus who is our Christ. AMEN.

We may not be engulfed in the current voracious hurricane spreading carnage along the Texas coastline but we have all faced a storm in our lives that has threatened our existence physically, emotionally or spiritually.  If you are one of the lucky few who have never had such an experience, I pray you never do.  But, for the rest of us there is a story that can speak to a reminder of who we are to be in Christ.  The story of Jesus calming the storm and sea is well-known.  It isn’t the first nor the last storm the disciples will experience as followers of Christ.  On another such occasion we see Peter reaching out to Jesus with an impetuous request.  He asked to walk on water to be at Jesus side.  Things seemed to have gone pretty well until Peter took his eye off Jesus and took in the horrifying scene that surrounded him.  Just as quickly as he stepped from the boat onto the water so he began to disappear under the stormy waves.

What do these stories have in common?  Jesus, of course!  But, what else?  It is the call to have peace in our own lives as it was for the disciples.  When Jesus was awakened by the disciples it was from a peaceful sleep.  His confidence was in God; the same God who created the presence of storms on the face of the earth.  He knew it wasn’t His time to die so there was nothing to fear.  The disciples should have taken a hint from Jesus in His peaceful sleep.  Instead, they cried out in fear “Don’t you care?”  So, Jesus called out to the wind and the water and declared “Peace, be still.”  Without question the disciples were calmed as well.  He not only was Lord of nature but of life as well.

He is the Lord of life still.  He is in the midst of our storms resting peacefully.  He desires for us to be at peace as well.  He doesn’t desire our death.  He died for our lives, too.  He speaks the word of God over our lives so that we can rest peacefully in the midst of the storm and live confidently when all else seems to be falling down around.  If we are at peace ourselves, a peace founded in Christ alone, then we will be peacemakers as well.  Our peace-filled presence when all else seems to be breaking loose in someone’s life can give them the faith and hope grounding that strengthens, encourages and settles their troubled waters.

Mighty men, live a shalom life- one that is peace-filled in our coming and our going and in the times when we need to rest, too.

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.'”  (Philippians 1. 21)

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

I was brought back around to this passage of God’s Word from a different angle.  In truth, I was surprised as this scripture spoke in my head.  I am not sure why I should be surprised.  God knew it was needed for today’s conversation after worship.  He knew I needed to be prepared for it so that a further connection could be made.  Indeed, God is fully aware of what we need.  He doesn’t respond to our need reactively.  He responds proactively.  We are the ones who spend more time reacting to the events we experience in the world.  As mighty men of God we need to spend more time preparing ourselves and to be prepared by God through His Holy Spirit given to us.  This is what helps to identify us as God’s mighty men.  Instead of living in the past or living in spite of our past, we should spend each day with the eye to “our” future.  Remember that while God calls us as individuals, He sees us as a body of believers empowered by faith and motivated by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

So, let me take this moment to share that “wow, that is what it means, too?” experience I had today.  During the lesson today the Holy Spirit prompted me to think upon Jesus’ teaching to the disciples in the upper room before His arrest, conviction and crucifixion.  In that teaching, Jesus declared His oneness with God and man.  He spoke boldly that He and the Father were one just as He and the disciples were one.  The logical and spiritual extension of this declaration is that we and the Father are one.  We do not stand alone before God.  Christ stands with us and so, too, does our band of brothers.  It doesn’t mean that we become invisible to God in light of the many.  It does mean that we each are accountable before God for our part serving as a member of the Body of Christ.

Mighty men, if we live apart from Christ then we are sure to experience the everlasting death.  Even though Christ died for all our sins so that we may experience eternal life as a promised reality, it still depends on each person to accept that truth, that gift and that opportunity to share love with both the gift and the truth.  Jesus did that expressly in His ministry which lead up to and through His arrest, conviction and crucifixion.  Think about it.  We are called to be one in the Body of Christ with Christ as our head.  The Christ is Messiah.  The Church is the messianic expression of the Kingdom of God on earth.  When we become a part of the Church, the body of Christ, we are participating in the messianic community.  Step away from that picture for a moment and see a different facet of what Paul declared as Jesus had lived out.

John reminds us of Jesus’ words “I did not come into the world to condemn the world but that through me all the world can be saved.”  We also know that Jesus did not invite the disciples and followers to become one in the body of Jesus.  That would be an impossibility (as perhaps Nicodemus was to learn about being reborn.)  We are not born into the old body.  We are in a new body.  It is not the body of Jesus but rather the body of Christ.  So, then Jesus was the body of God (fully man and fully God) with God as His head.  He could be Messiah in no other way.  He could do it because He had no sin.  He was, in a manner of speaking, the epitome of the Temple.  Those who worshipped God served the Temple and the God who was the head of it.  But, Jewish followers had a difficult time keeping this concept a reality.  Why?  Because they were sinners fallen short of the glory of God.  The temple was not supposed to be reflection of God but a projection.  They failed miserably as do we if we do not have Jesus as the Christ.

It was there that the Spirit brought to mind Paul’s admonition to the mighty men of Philippi “To live is Christ and to die is gain.”  We may not be able to choose the way in which we will die.  However, we can certainly choose the way in which we will live.  Choosing to live in Christ transforms death from a loss to a gain, a liability to an asset, from a defeat to a win.  How would we characterize our lives so far?  Do we measure by what we haven’t done or by what we have done.  Do we dwell on what could have been or what has been and is yet to be?  Do we define ourselves by the standards of the world corrupted by sin or by the kingdom empowered by righteousness?

Mighty men, let us keep our perspective on Jesus (the man of God) Christ (the righteousness of God).  It is as a man born in the world that we exist but not as man alone.  It is as one in Christ born into the Kingdom of God that we exist.  The two are as one because that is the resurrected reality for all believers.  And, I suppose now with a smile, that it is not just the “two are one” but “three in one”- the trinity of a mighty man in the world just as Christ is “three in one: Father, Son and Holy Spirit”- the Holy Trinity.

* Let’s review the story of our lives and strengthen it with the witness of our faith in Christ and God’s love for us through Christ.

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.'”  (Philippians 1. 21)

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

I remember a camp experience where we created a story, every camp should have one, that you could tell around a campfire that we give everyone the willies.  It worked, too.  But the circumstances used to create the story were so real that we had to untell it.  The story spread like wildfire across the camp from Friday night to Saturday morning.  Even the parents and sponsors coming to pick up their kids were drawn into it.  Some were not amused.  But in our closing circle I used the whole event as a teaching tool.  I posed a question to everyone- “What if the gospel could spread as quickly as the spooky store created on the night before?”

Let’s be honest with ourselves.  How many times have we told a family story or a scary story or just made up a story at the spur of the moment?  Now how many times have we told the gospel story?  Do the numbers compare?  What about the impact?  Which was greater?  As Paul wrote to the mighty men of Philippi he declared to live is Christ and to die is gain.  What do we gain from the stories we told?  Paul said to die was to gain- gain eternal life and the privilege of hearing God declare “Well done my faithful son and devoted servant.”  In truth that is what Paul meant by living is Christ.  Living is being the faithful son and devoted servant because that is who Jesus was on earth and the call He issues to all of us who are walking with Him by faith.

Is our life “story” convincing and convicting to eternal life?  Or is it just a scary story meant to only bring chills up and down the spine?  Our lives and our life story are meant to mean something that inspires others to change the way they live and for whom they live.  And the foundation of that story is the gospel shared with us by someone else who truly believed it.  They believed it so much that it became their story, too.

* Let’s review the story of our lives and strengthen it with the witness of our faith in Christ and God’s love for us through Christ.

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

Matthew 20.18-19

“Jesus said, ‘We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the Law.  They will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified.  On the third day He will be raised to life.'”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

What is it that you believe about Jesus as the Christ?  Do you believe that He was born of a virgin conceived by God through the Holy Spirit?  Do you believe that performed many signs and wonders following His rebuke of Satan’s temptation in the wilderness as He transitioned from baptism into ministry?  Do you believe He healed the sick, reconciled the forsaken and cast out demons as well as bestowing the Holy Spirit upon His disciples to do the same?  Do you believe that He raised the dead and comforted those who mourned the dead with a life-giving faith in His Heavenly Father?  Do you believe He was condemned, crucified and on the third day was raised from death and the grave by the same life-giving faith in His Heavenly Father?  Do you believe that all those who declare their allegiance and affinity for Jesus as the Christ are saved from sin’s penalty of eternal death and granted the blessing of eternal life revealed in part in this world and in full in the Kingdom yet to come?  In the days of Jesus’ life on earth a little over two thousand years ago there were many who did not believe?  Some were doubters.  Some were “I can’t believe it’s truers.” Some were influential religious and political leaders.  Some just didn’t know what to believe.  Have we found ourselves in any of those shoes?  And what strikes me, mighty men, is that God did not need our belief in the Truth to perform the miracle of salvation.  He needed Jesus to believe it and He did and God responded accordingly.

Striking, isn’t it, that the life and death and resurrection of Jesus was prophetically uttered hundreds of years before His birth in Bethlehem.  Yet, those who should have known, understood and believed in these prophecies didn’t.  When Jesus took the disciples to the mountains above Caesarea Philippi and asked them there “Who do people and who do you say that I am?” some doubted, some didn’t know what to say, some were afraid and one was willing to declare the Truth.  Upon that confession and profession of faith Jesus declared “Upon that I can build My Church.”  Imagine a similar scene that could have happened in that Upper Room in Jerusalem in the house of a friend where the disciples gathered with Jesus for the Passover meal.  Jesus had already declared several times the truth of this time in history in which they were involved pointing to His death and resurrection.  Their observations hadn’t changed much in those intervening years between that mountaintop discussion in Caesarea Philippi and the rooftop celebration on the night Jesus was betrayed leading to His conviction, crucifixion and ultimate resurrection.  Imagine Jesus uttering words similar to this as He felt the thoughts of doubt and wonder from the disciples in His own mind, heart and spirit “They may not believe these things will happen to the Savior of Israel or that the Messiah of God will do all these things; you may not believe them as well in spite of all you have seen and heard.”  Then He pauses quietly before continuing “But God does!”

Does that truth not strike you in the heart, mind and spirit with powerful conviction and inviting confession?  It does me!  It doesn’t matter what I may believe if God didn’t believe it first.  The God who loves us so much that He gave His only begotten Son to us so that when we do believe the truth and receive it for ourselves we will, not can but will, be saved.  God believed in Jesus as the Christ.  God believes in us, too.  He has known us before we were conceived.  He prepared us for life in this world before we received it.  He has blessed us with the opportunity to glorify His Name and presence before we perceived it.  If God can and does, then what are we waiting for?  He has already shown Himself and proved Himself to us and the entire world.  It would seem that if we are living in the glory years of the light of that revelation we should truly be alive in faith, hope and love.  What do you believe, mighty men?  Do you believe in God?  in Jesus Christ? in Yourself?  Trust in the Lord your God and lean not upon your own understanding.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”

HIS WORD for TODAY

1 Samuel 16.7b

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at.  People look at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Have we, as mighty men, had our vision checked?  I do not mean our physical eyesight, though that may not be a bad reminder for some.  Rather, I am being challenged to have our spiritual vision checked.  I know there have been times in my life, and probably in yours, where I just couldn’t see where God was working in my life.  I just couldn’t see any hope.  I just couldn’t see any reason.  I just couldn’t see any value.  I just couldn’t see beyond myself.  When I find myself at those times in my life, I know I need to get my vision checked- my spiritual vision.  Do I allow myself to see things as God sees them?  He certainly has a clear vision of the big picture.  It was for the big picture that He sent His Son into the world.  That big picture was for our salvation.  Only through faith that Jesus is the Christ can we be saved.  And if that is already done then we have been allowed to see the big picture, too.  But, God not only sees the big picture, he sees the detail of the picture, too.  I think in my “visionless” or “sightless’ moments it is because I have focused on the details (which is me) and not only the big picture.  And if I see the big picture of God’s love for me and for us, then the details of my life look a bit different.

We cannot focus on the outward appearance as the sole determiner of worth and value.  As God spoke to Samuel, He was reminding him of the “soul” determiner as the parameter of worth and value.  If we value our souls as much as God does then we will be able to embrace our worth to Him and to our place in His big picture.  Think of it as a puzzle.  A puzzle is not one solitary piece but a myriad of pieces that will interlock to reveal a bigger picture.  Take one piece out and the picture loses some of its clarity.  The same be said for us.  If we forget one piece of our lives, let’s say God for example, then how can we see our full value and worth?  And if God is infused into the many aspects of our lives such as family, friends, work, worship for example, then those parts of our lives lose focus as well.  It begins at the very heart of the matter.  Is God in our heart?  Can God see Himself in us just as we are supposed to see ourselves in Him?  How can we do this?  I believe we can do this by keeping Jesus at the center of our lives.  He told His disciples that “just as the Father and I are one, so too, are you and I one.”

Mighty men, we are called to live so that God can be seen in us and through us.  Just as Jesus is the light of the world so are we to be lighthouses, spiritual lighthouses, wherever we are.  And if the light of Life shines in us and through us, then others vision of faith and hope will become clearer.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

1 John 1.7

“But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Just as God is love so God, too, is in the light. Not only is God in the light and He is the light and the light is in Him. So, John makes his declaration to the fellowship of believers that they must also endeavor to be and remain in the light. Why? Because it is the light of God which radiates healing to our body, mind and spirit. Yes, by the grace of God which raised Jesus from the dead and covers us with righteousness we are radiated to be purified of the disease which sin infects our lives. That disease manifests itself in discord, destruction, demonization and demoralization. Ultimately, it manifests itself in death- the death that separates us totally from the saving grace of God.

As mighty men of God, we would want the light of God which is experienced best by being in right relationship with Jesus as our Christ. If we are in the light of God’s mercy and grace then we become vehicles of healing as well reaching out to touch the world around us. How can we know the light is in us? I believe it comes when the Word of God is known by us in a recognized revelation. By recognized revelation I mean when we actually find the truth of the Word coming alive- our mind receives clarity, our body receives power, our heart receives depth and our spirit receives a greater nearness to God. The more we are in the light the more the light is in us and the more we are like Jesus. Isn’t that what we desire, mighty men of God? Don’t we really want to be like Jesus? He is life perfected having been delivered from the sins of all the world through God’s grace and love. We are being perfected as well as the light of God shines around us, in us and through us. The first step in that journey is the sacrificial offering Jesus made on the cross for us. Accepting His sacrifice for us proves God is waiting on no one to pursue Him. He is pursuing us.

So then, mighty men, we are to pursue others who are family, friends, even our antagonists with the light of God’s love as we have been pursued. That is the second step in our journey. With two steps we are engaged in the walk of faith. Let’s walk together and let the light of God so shine in the world.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

Colossians 2. 9-12

“For in Christ all the fullness of God lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. In Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through your faith in the working of God who raised Him from the dead!”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

As mighty men of God we are in Christ and living to be as one with Christ. What a blessing it is to know the greatest impact of God’s desire to be reconciled with us through the giving of His only begotten Son to the world. In the end- WE WIN because GOD will not lose the battle of love for His people. Yes, there will be those who surrender the fight of faith and clothe themselves with the darkness of the enemy. Isn’t it interesting to recognize the transition of the Enemy of God, Satan, from an angel of light, beauty and joy to the chief of fallen angels whose appearance to man is a facade of light, beauty and joy hiding the truth of their nature- darkness, ugliness and sorrow. Yes, the vices of this world are the tools of the enemy cloaked in “bling and false promises” luring the weary in their own despair. Misery loves company is the reality of living in the Hell of the Enemy. Even the faithful experience “misery loves company” but with the promise of God’s love through Jesus Christ the company of the faith-filled believers will empower and enable the downtrodden to see the light of day which is in Christ alone. What a strength of character this is for the mighty men of God. As we take on the leadership of raising the generations that follow we need to know we will never be alone. God Himself is always with us. It is His promise to us that will never be broken. As we have been raised from the penalty of death which is the result of unforgiven sin so are we raised to an eternal and abundant life. We must live life in this world with this reality wrapped around our heart, mind and spirit. It is a heaven-woven robe of righteousness. It is clasped by the Holy Spirit and anointed by the grace of God. It is the undergarment of the full armor of God. We are given every opportunity to be successful in this world as we will be in the next. Let us take every opportunity to exercise our call to be leaders in the world- at home and abroad.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”

PRAYER CONCERNS: (Needs of God’s mighty men that will be answered out of faith, hope and love)

* For those leading God’s people in worship this weekend

* For Louisville, Kentuckiana, Goodwill, NECC and the people of Nepal
* For the needs of my family near and far and our friends healing, reconciliation and wisdom- especially for Tom Jensen; for needs of my family; wisdom to know the truth and relate it adequately; for guidance in a difficult financial situation

Let us be the BEST we have ever been as 2017 mighty men!

HIS WORD for TODAY

John 17. 20-23

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in US so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. I have given them the glory that You gave Me, that they may be one as WE are one— I in them and You in Me—so that they may be brought to complete unity!”

REFLECTIONS ON HIS WORD:

Happy Father’s Day!.

As mighty men of God, mighty people of God to be truthful, our true and most important identity ought to be oneness with God. It is difficult for most people to embrace a oneness with God for a number of reasons such as authority-figure, judge, law giver, etc. However, Jesus brings to our minds and lives the true means of being one with God. He does it by living out the father-son relationship. Many preachers talk about the difference between religion and relation; even I have done so. I do not believe we can have one without the other. But, we must keep in mind the proper priority of the two. In order to embrace a vital oneness with God, to worship Him in truth and in spirit, we must have a authentic relationship with God as our Heavenly Father. This is what Jesus did. It is what He lived for and died for. He was the incarnation of authentic relationship with God. He was the Son of God in Heaven and on earth. He did not dwell on being prince or king though He knew He was the King of Kings. He did not dwell on the Law and being a law-giver except to remind everyone that the greatest commandment was to love God and then to love one another. His obedience was not a demand but a command. It was a command of worth and will. The value of life has a good worth and is led by good will. And in His prayer to God, His Father, for the disciples was laden with the relationship hope that would be one of the foundation stones aligned with the Cornerstone of the Church and the religion is promoted. A religion of good worth, good will and right relationship.

And what can that mean for the mighty men of God? Is it not that as Christ has brought us into right relationship with God through the sacrifice, willing sacrifice, of His own life so that we can be known as sons of God, too, so must we then do the same for our “disciples.” And who are those disciples if not our family and friends? Establishing and building relationships that image the immutable God-Son on earth as it is Heaven is our great commission. Promoting unity of faith, hope and love, most of all love, is the boots on the ground tactic of defeating the enemy and making allies. Being a father to a son of ours, and daughter, is keeping alive the gospel of Jesus Christ who showed us how the love of the Father becomes a love for all those who are willing to become a part of the family of that Father. He is not distant. He is not aloof. He is not absent. He is not haughty. He is not rude. He is not self-serving. He is not impatient. He is not the enemy. Instead, He is with us. He is united with us in Spirit and in truth. He is an ever present help. He is humble. He is courteous and kind. He is all about serving the needs of others. He is our Father, Friend and Ally.

Sounds like some big shoes to fill and big steps to follow. But, in love Jesus will help us grow into them and learn to walk with them in bringing all the world into the right relationship of God and man. I like to think that each Father’s Day is a gift to dads that is a challenge to do better because we are better for God, for ourselves, for our spouses and children and for our friends and those who will become our friends.

“Let us be the best we have ever been as 2017 mighty men.”
